Man, this was such a good tutorial. It held up over time as I am still using this tutorial in 2021 with gopro9. Ty!
Hey buddy what about multiple clips from the same ride? You can sync them to?
@@ReadytoDIRT If you are still wondering about syncing clips, I just did my first video/data sync using VIRB, syncing the ride data to multiple clips linked together. Got it to work quite well after fudging about with geo-syncing each clip. After clicking geo-sync, I adjusted the slider bar on the right to match the elapsed time on that video clip. Here is how it went: each clip was 8:52 in length, but my gopro turned on 11 seconds AFTER I started my head unit. That meant to sync accurately, I needed to add 11 seconds each time I synced the data to each clip. Example. Clip #2 started at 8:52, so I adjusted the data slider bar to 9:03. Worked pretty spot on.
Few seconds into the video and I already got what I needed. Quick check how others do this doesn't hurt either. Perfect, thanks!
are there any android app for mobile devices?
nice video 🔥🔥🔥
Wow. Thanks Shane for demystifying this whole process. I'm jazzed to get a GoPro and give it a go.
Thank you Shane for this video and all you do to support the cycling/Zwift/Garmin world. You are my go to for this kind of detailed information. Keep up the good work and I love your stuff.
Thanks for sharing. used this nearly four years after it was posted... helped me get started...
tons of time spent on gauges, but beginning was straight to the point. good video! seems easy enough to use. everything working currently
great work, thanks. When the winter is over I will make some movies from my bicycle trips. Have fun wiht you bike!
never gets old tutorial.. great work. thanks mate>>
Still a great video, I decided to start recording my weekend rides with a GoPro9 I got for my Bday and this video is exactly what I needed to get started! Thanks Shane🙂 (Also ordered the Bryton Gardia based on your review a few days ago) Love your channel!!!!!!
Thanks Shane, since I asked you about this program I've slowly been building up using the GoPro and edge 520 for flying videos out of Ballarat. What you showed today confirmed I am doing it right. Not just great for cycling but for other activities as well. Keep up the great work and catch ya on the road 👍
Thanks for this video, great tutorial. This still works great on Windows 11 in 2023. Had to edit the registry to get the map sync working, but apart from that all fine.
Thanks. I'm thinking of getting a camera. That Garmin software is great!
Simply, quick, and clear. Thank you for the amazing video!
Perfect tutorial! I’ve been looking for this forever! Thanks :)
From a graphic designers perspective I’d recommend giving each UI element some space to the borders to breath :)
Thanks for this shane, I only just spotted it, but its an amazing resource, you are an amazing resource.....
Awesome! I'm wanting to add data to my videos now and this was such a good tutorial! thanks, dude! 😁👊
Thank you! This is very useful. I carry my GoPro to ride electric skateboards. And I want to show the GPS datas, speed, height, range, route everything with overlay. Great. Right the tutorial I need. Trying.
This is exactly what I'm searching for! Awesome tutorial, thanks!
Thanks, that info will be very handy for a project I'm looking at doing. I think it will also change the way a lot will view the "mud maps" we use now.
Just found this and got super excited to try it out. Matching up the video and map gets really difficult once the video is in multiple clips. Gonna have to try it out on my next video and work through it a bit more.
This issue kills Virb - no clue why there isn't an option to merge clips so that you only have to sync once.
Great timing on this video! I just picked up a Hero6. Gonna try it out on Saturday!! Thanks!
Cool video, great insight into your workflow. Your 'ride along' videos always looked cool with that overlay. It's a bit of work to make it happen with all of that data overlay, but well worth it.
Awesome. Great to know how to do this. I thought I was going to be stuck with just Cycliq Fly 12 metrics lol. Now I have something to do after rides.
Excellent tutorial video!! I just picked up a GoPro and wanted to sync my data. Very clear and concise video. Great job!
The maps don't work anymore. Apparently something to do with Garmin letting their API lapse. Very frustrating as I did a few videos previously using data and people liked them
Nice virus lol
Incredibly easy to follow and learn. Thank you!
Love this Shane! I used to have a Tom Tom Bandit that had this sort of functionality built in. Recently updated to a Go Pro 8 and disappointed to see that not only is the Go Pro Quik software no longer supported as a desktop app, but the gauge overlay functionality is fairly limited. So pleased that I can use this to grab data from my Fenix 6 to overlay video from the GoPro.
Inner nerd is doing back flips right now!
Thank you so much Shane! Always wondered how I could do this and now I'm able to do it myself. Keep up the good work!
Hey Shane - for Gmetrix sync can switch the map to Satellite view to help picking out the road furniture
Thank you! Very good video. I was struggling to find a way to add my gopro gps data and match it up with my garmin 530. This is perfect!!!
Excellent tutorial - thanks for sharing!
Thanks. This inspired me to order a Garmin VIRB to mount on my handlebar!
Great video mate! Really clear and good vibe! Appreciate the effort here! Liked and subscribed!
Thanks Shane, always admired your overlays but never knew they were free to make. Not sure I want to put my power data on RUclips though. Personal use only :-)
Hi Shane, fantastic info, really enjoyed this tutorial, thanks for sharing it. Love your videos... take care :)
Cheers Dave. Always good to know the work put into these is worth while.
Tremendous Shane, I gave it a quick go using some footage from my commute yesterday
Thanks, Shane! Great video.
I’ve had a few issues with this when I started using virb a while ago when editing the video. Haven’t used it a lot but think it works better if you do the data overlay before you edit video or else you have to do the above work for each clip and I usually try to trim sections out of videos . That is swear jar material!!
Super informative and to the point - thanks mate!
Brilliant for Garmin to give this free. Now to whip out my GoPro for my next ride.
thank you so much for this video .. youve done pod casts with floris havnt youn? took me a long tine to figure out how to get the geometrics. got it now !! 😊 on my videoes got it finally thank you a million times 🤜🤛
Thanks a lot. a very good video. all I want to know about the overlays are all answered in this one video. thanks.
Hello there from other side of the world, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Well I have GoPro Hero 7 Black and it makes beautiful photos and videos with great stabilisation, but their software is a crap.
It's like it's made for 4-5 years old kids to play with.
I am using Filmora PC software for video editing and for my needs it's great and simple.
But still for a while I wanted to put speedometer on my videos and I wasn't able to do so.
Now I know how to do it, and thank you for that.
Dobar si burazeru
Nice explanation! Exactly what I need!!
Great video thanks. Going to try it with my wahoo bolt and Osmo action camera
Did it work with your wahoo?
Given the short battery life of GoPro (and the need to avoid long videos and big files) I don't record the entire ride, just sections. I then use the lap function on the Elemnt Bolt at the same time I start and stop each recording to make G-metrix syncing easier.
I've always wondered how the cycling videos with the embedded data are made and now I know. Great explanation and terrific video. Thanks. I'm curious, do you have a video where you discuss where on your bike (or person) it is best to mount the camera? If not, can I suggest this for a future video?
Thanks David. As for mounting, under the handlebars is best (under the GPS) I find. I have experimented with a chest mount but that is awkward to wear and angle right.
Thanks for the advice!
Nice! Thanks for posting this.
awesome Shane been waiting for this.
Brilliant video as usual!
Been looking for this exact solution for my flying vids. I can’t believe that GoPro force people to use their mobile app and have stopped developing Quick Desktop…thanks again.
Great Video. I only just discovered that this was a thing on someone else's video so googled it then searched RUclips and struck it lucky finding your video first so thanks a lot. Crystal clear. Just one question, would this work with video taken from an Android phone? Thanks again.
It'll work with almost any video source. It may need to be converted into MP4 or something VirbEDIT knows about if it's in an unknown format though.
Thanks for the reply. Can't wait to try this out 😊@@gplama
Thanks, that was a great help, and worked exactly as you said. Cheers Mate
Sweet this answers my question! I was concerned they had an update and removed.
Exactly what I’m looking for. Thanks for the right on post.
A couple of years ago something changed in the Virb software causing runtime errors when you tried to sync the gpx file. Someone made a work around which worked great till a week ago virb started having runtime errors again. Now I can't find the old work around. Might not work anymore anyway. This was great for adding the data overlay. Any new work arounds you know of?
I haven't tried this for a while now. It has been on life support for a while now.
So what are the cool kids using now to overlay data onto gopro videos? It seems as though Virb is a dead piece of software.
@@evasivefox7287 Found a legit download for Dashware and it's not as slick as Virb but it works pretty well.
Thanks for this! - Fingers crossed this still works in 2022 when my GoPro10 arrives. :-) Looks like the Virb Edit software hasn't been updated since 2018, I'm wondering if this is still the best option?
As you shown, you have to select a template before you can add Indvidual gauges. Then delete any unwanted gauges.
This is perfect; exactly what I needed thanks so much! Question: If I’m using an Apple Watch what’s the best app to use so I can import the software data for the overlay? Would like a more clear step with that part if at all possible?
Have a look at the HealthFitApp. It should export your workouts from the Apple Watch into a format that VirbEDIT can use.
@@gplama Awesome, fingers crossed I can figure it all out! Thanks so much!
Amazing!!! Thanks For help
Used gopro hero 5 black integrated metrics today but speed which i checked wasn't accurate at all! This might be an alternative, will give it a go thanks!
Hi Shane!
Awesome tutorial! Thank you very much! I've done a video following your tutorial. Not only have you taught us how to use overlays, but also made us (me at least) understand that the whole FIT or GPX file is basically the same timeline as the video timeline, that just needs to be synced to one another. Very helpful!
I am struggling now to import the power data out of Stryd Power Meter. It is present in the FIT file, it is visible in Garmin Connect, but it is missing in the Virb Edit. What am I doing wrong?
I haven't attempted to import Stryd power. That'd be an interesting video.
@@gplama yeah, I saw what DC Rainmaker did and wanted to put some effort into it to make a more expanded review in Russian language. But the thing is that he uses garmin virb ultra 30 camera and apparently there is no problem with power data import
Awesome introduction to using Garmin Virb software with my GoPro 7 Silver for outlays on my cycling video. I recorded one of my summer rides for indoor cycling during local Michigan winters. I use the MapMyRun Android app to record a .TCX file. The .TCX file is not compatible with Garmin Virb, so I found an app (TXC Converter) to convert this to a .GPX file. I rendered my Garmin Virb video for a 1.2 hour ride to a high qualify 4K video. I do have 2 questions. Garmin Virb estimated the output video file would be 24 GB, turned out to be 70.7 GB.
Question #1:
For a 1.2 hour ride is a 70.7 GB file normal?
Question #2:
One of my Virb gauges was Incline. In part of my video I am going up hill on a street with lots of trees, the incline number jumps around from +10 to -5 to +6 within seconds. When I look at the GPX file the altitude amounts do randomly jump up and down. Is this normal? Is there a software to smooth out this type of jumping GPS data?
AWESOME!!! I've been hunting for over a year on how to do this with the gear I already own. Thanks!! Now how do I save my appearance as a template, so I don't have do this for every video?
You can save your templates. Just be aware this software is now ageing quickly and might not work as expected.
@@gplama Got it, I see it!!! Oh noooo, just when I discover it..☹. Is there a replacement you recommend? THANKS!!!!!!!
Shane, I appreciate you making this video. I had requested it a few months back. When I export the video at the 2.7K definition, it takes forever (over 2 hrs.) to complete the process. I'm using a 2016 MacBook Air so I'm not sure if it's just me?
Without looking at the specs, I'd take a guess the Air is not the best equipped for video compression processing.
Mark it's not just you, I've got an old laptop (6 years+ insert laughter here) and it takes about 3hrs to export about 12min footage. It's likely the computing power available but that taps out my knowledge on computers, just wanted to say you're not alone on the matter.
Ben Clark it usually takes me 3 hrs. for an hour long video on the MacBook Air.
I use a MacBook Pro 2017 to export at 720p 30fps and it crashes out at 17% every time, the video length is 50 minutes but it should still work...
Try a 2008 Macbook pro - it brings it to it's knees.
Nice. I got to try it out. Thanks for this!
Thank you. Very comprehensive and easy to follow. I do have an issue I
hope you can help with. When I create a title there is a rectangular
box around the title. This rectangular box does not fade in or out with
the title. It's just always there. Do you know of a setting that I
need to do to get rid if this rectangular box?
thanks Shane, still relevant today - got an issue with power not appearing when i import from garmin connect to Virb though... any ideas?
Very neat. Thank you!
Great video! Do I need to have GPS turned on on my GoPro for synchronisation?
You don't need to, but it helps.
@@gplama thank you
thanks. you saved my time
Can you import 2 gmatrix files? I want to show me vs someone else on a Strava segment. To show if I am ahead or behind. Thanks for the great video.
Not possible. Maybe you could match up the video with the first data file then use that as the source as a second import/overlay.
Thanks for easy explanation. Now as I have Garmin 735XT, GoPro 5 black and this know-how, I'm ready to play with it :)
Just one question I have. Is the manual synchronization of the video and the map required in case that GoPro 5 and the Garmin 735XT contain GPS information? Thanks!
Thank you for the tutorial!
I would give two thumbs up if possible!!
Although, think about 2020 version
thanks for the info because gopro quick is not working these days
Great video. I have a 🙋♂️ I have a insta360 r, and for some reason I can’t import my stabilized video, but the unstableized version I can.
Do you have any tips for file format import and specs, res and frame rate? Also is there a manual for VIRB? Can’t seem to find it online. Thx so much
Best jump onto the Garmin support forum for VIRB edit. Ant support for non Virb footage is a bonus.
Hi Shane, I was undecided about which action cam to choose. I thought that the only action cam that allowed to enter the speed, cadence, gradient, watt data, coming from the bike sensors was the Virb. From your video I understand that it can also be done with the gopro + the virb app. At this point I ask you better the Virb 30 or the gopro 8? Consider that I would like to overlay the data of the sensors in my videos. Thanks
I’ve never used any of the Virb cameras. I’d take a guess the GoPro range are a lot better given their popularity.
@@gplama Thanks Shane for your answer. My idea was to orient myself towards gopro 8 since there is the possibility of using the data coming from the sensors.
Great tutorial. I cant seem to get my video to sync with the data collected from my Garmin GPX file. I filmed using a Ghost X camera and made 4-5 clips of short video and joined them together. Is the problem because there are chopped up video files and not just one long uniteruppted video? I just assumed the Virb program would be able to sort through the Garmin data and sync to the movie clips? Any advice? Thanks.
Use another program to join the videos into one single video file before importing into VIRB Edit.
@@gplama Shane, I did that, using PowerDirector, reducing video length from 1.5 hrs. to 3 minutes. My Garmin was set to "Smart" data recording. Maybe use "every second" recording?
@@ncwild Hmm.. that might help. VIRB Edit is no longer updated/supported so it'll be a case of playing around with options/settings and hoping it'll work. :)
A great and informative help for lay-people such as myself. Cheers mate!
Also , can I import Gopro video straight into Virb editor without altering/re-naming the file type?
PPS, I have a gopro 7 with built in gps telemetry ,would Virb edit recognise this ? Thanks again for your time and effort in uploading this.
If the file format is supported by Virb Edit, then yep.
Thanks a good helpful video for a newbie
One question, I have my Edge 1030 plus set to auto pause when I stop. Am I correct that this will cause the Garmin data and the Gopro video to get out of sync? If yes this any other option other than stopping auto pause?
I don't think auto-pause causes any issues as VirbEdit will take into account actual time of day, not activity time.
@@gplama thank you
Have you tried uploading the video to Tacx, Rouvy, etc to ride on your smart trainer? Thanks.
Thanks 😊 Shane!
Is it possible to show the map view of the entire route and not just the section that you ride in the video? I only have bits of the ride recorded on video, but when you work on small bits, the map that you place in VIRB onto your clip is only as long as the distance you rode in that small video.
Brilliant thanks. Did you try overlaying on a green screen in the virb edit and then merging in imovie/prem pro etc
Hello, thankyou for a awesome video!! What file format do you export the garmin file in for this app?
FIT format
Hi Shane, thanks for the video. Is there a way to change speedo from miles to kilometres on mac?
Virb Edit -> Preferences -> Units
Shane Miller - GPLama thanks Shane but i seem to not have this option in my Mac 🖥
Hi Shane, what do you do with multiple video files? Do you have to sync the G-metrix for each videofile. You know one ride (1h) can be 3 videofiles ( GoPro).
I join them in Final Cut Pro. Virb Edit doesn't play well with me when I've tried to use multiple videos in the timeline within the program with overlays. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
Ok Thanks! I thought so. Thanks for the quick answer. !!
Abel Tyberghein I have the same problem. When I put the multiple video files of the same ride together the G-metrix don’t add up and at the end it shows only the distance of the last clip. The funny part is that the charts do add up.
Have you figured out how to fix this?
Can I use my Iphone to shoot the video file or it really only has to be shot on the action cameras listed for this to work?
Shane will this work with insta 360? Hope youll a vid soon.
I loved making exactly one video with this software. I then ran into a scripting error that prevents me from syncing the fit data. Does anyone know of any alternatives to this software that are good?
Thanks... It's helpful for us..
Great video Shawn, thank you again! Could you please probably make video what to buy to make nice videos from rides/races when you are low on budget? Something like 300-400 USD and then be able to post to YT videos from races/TT/etc. in good quality?
Amazing video. Thanks for the demo. One question: do you think the G-metrix would automatically align with multiple footage taken across the path? I was thinking perhaps it can use the time stamp from the Camera and the Garmin device to do that.
It'll align with GPS timestamps I believe.
@@gplama Thanks. I'll give it a go and let you know how it turns out
GREAT VIDEO!!!! I am trying to match Strava flybys with go pro for mountain biking so that you can see the actual trail relative to where it is on the map. Any advice?
Ok you lost me at 2:54, what's a fit file and how do you find that on your device?
It's the GPS and sensor data file. /Garmin/Activities
@@gplama Where would you find that in a gopro or Samasung phone video, which works by the way in this software?
Best jump into the Virb Edit support forums over on the Garmin website.
thanks for your video, just i have question when i import video and data from my computer to VIRB Edit . there is message was shown ( there was an error in the video...) then i couldn’t complete the editing, do you have any solution for that
How does it measure your speed? does this come through the watch or camera speed? it's fascinating.
GPS data from the imported FIT activity file.
Great video! Can you also add the coordinates from your GPS data (Garmin) onto the screen?
The plot/course is there. As for showing the exact coordinates in number/degees I'm not sure.
@@gplama I did notice at the 6:07 time under the Data Type it has coordinates, have you tried that? Thanks
@@2badger2 I haven't tried. The download is free so give it a whirl if you have a chance.
Nice vid, How do you mosaic a video
Hello sir. I have a Hero 6 and a Garmin Vivo Sport fitness tracker watch with GPS. Is there a way to get the info from the watch.. mainly the heart rate.. onto the GoPro file or do I need one of these “head units” ?
I’m not familiar with the Vivo Sport. If it generates a FIT file then maybe. Check Garmin Connect, load an activity, see if you can ‘Export Original’ and go from there.
Shane Miller - GPLama thank you for the quick reply. I’ve only ever used Garmin Connect on iOS I will have to download to Mac and see if there is a file. I found this info after finding your video and commenting.
