Interesting approach. I use Davinci Resolve to do all of my editing/colour correction of my clips and then feed the completed video through Virb to overlay the gauges. IMO, the Virb gauges look a little more polished.
Quick question, I literally cannot seem to add the green screen, I've made the gauge and every time I try to add it nothing happens, any ideas? Otherwise I guess I could just export a long green video and use that as my background footage instead, yeah just thought of that, itll probably work just the same
The Garmin Virb Ultra 30 Action Cam automatically syncs everything and to this day has better and motion metrics than most action camera released today. Its a shame they haven't made a new one, it was ahead of its time.
Jeff, I know alot of your recent videos have the distance to finish...I can't for the life of me figure out how to create such a gauge. The only thing I could think of is to setup a gauge that is distance in meters (it counts up) and then in final edit, reverse the clip...but some extra work. Can you share how you get the countdown in meters?
The camera has built-in stabilization. If I want to add more I use the warp stabilizer in premiere pro, but the in-camera is usually fine. Every time you add electronic stabilization, it crops part of your video.
If you have a GoPro Hero 5 or later you can use Reelsteady which stabilizes based on gyro data from the recording. It will cost $99 for the software but the results appear quite good.
Thanks for this. If you made a video that was just the chroma key green colour, like 30 minutes or something, would that save a bit of effort? You could just add more than one if your data was longer? I'm wondering how I could streamline the process. I've found this software to be quite bug-riddled :D However, making my own custom gauges has been so much fun. Virb Edit is way more advanced and offers a lot more opportunity for customisation, but the gauge editor duplicated about 10 gauges in addition to the one I asked it to, so I think I'll just stick to Dashware for now. I hope they continue working on it, though.
Nice video.. I was not aware of Dashware.. I'll give it a try. Virb Edit does not seem to import mov files which is the format my camera outputs. Its a pain that I have to convert them but unless you know otherwise I'll have to continue doing that. Can you also say if you can add a map that shows your position on the dashboard? Thanks
are you still using these cameras? The quality on your videos are top notch could be now summer the lighting is even better, been looking to get something for my charity grand fondos the only problem it's 180 miles and will need to select what points to record.
Nice Video. If you are doing front and back camera, do you first put them together or first ad tha data overlay to the front video and add the rear cam afterwards?
Thanks so much for all your videos and this tutorial Jeff. In the Virb software, I am receiving a "Script error" message when I get to the G-Metrix part of my process. I can add the video, add the gauges, but when I try to add my G-Metrix file, it never loads the map and is blank remains blank on the right hand part of the screen. Any thoughts or have you experienced this? Thanks.
Hi, I think not using the waterproof boxes is awesome- vid quality is much better and sound is better, BUT I assume that means you can't use these in rain storms or wet weather, right? What do you do if you show up for a race and it starts raining? thx
Thanks for an excellent video! But good as you are, it is still too fast for this 80 yo to comprehend? I am a recumbent trike rider from Australia and would love to add Speed/Grade overlays to my GoPro 4 silver videos. I have downloaded Garmin Virb Edit software-or should I try Dashware first? I would love to get one on one tuition for Video Editing as it seems to be more for young people to comprehend. What can you recommend to get a better grip on Vid Editing? Is there any step by step tuition vids available? Or people who can offer a phone consult service or even email service I could subscribe to? Cheers!
I can't find that barfly mount anywhere. The mounts on there website don't look aluminum at all anymore and they don't say if they are as far as I've searched. Also I have a Felt too!!
Hi, what kind of front mount do you use ? I have an original front mount Garmin for my Edge 820 but I' m not sure what kind of support to use for a GoPro 8. Thanks for your help.
Whenever I add the green screen gauge to a video on Dashware it says the gauge is at some crazy coordinates (-320, -800) and I'm unable to select it and drag it back into the field of view. Any tips for this?
Is there a way to get the layer out of VIRB, like you did with Dashware? It feels like it would be nice to have the full primary angle video with telemetry as a base file, then add edits and second or third angles later in Premiere or Final Cut. Anyone know how to do this? I am on a MacBook and don't feel like buying yet another Windows license to run Parallels or something.
What skeleton housing and lens protector did you get for your Hero3? I still can't get rid of the rattle sound from my Hero4. I used Dashware years ago until they discontinued it. Looks like GoPro bought them and they started up again? Maybe I'll go back to it as I think sync'ing data was easier than with Virb Edit. Your green screen technique is pretty out of the box thinking. I never would have thought of something like that.
Brian - here's the lens protector and frame I got for the hero 3 www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0723CKJV3/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I realize that it contradicts my advice in the video, so if you're worried about the frame mount cracking, go for an aluminum one or the official gopro one. I wouldn't mind my hero3 falling, it's the excuse i need to upgrade. That lens protector slides over and is really snug though. Seems to do a good job and I can't tell any difference in image quality.
@Seppe Tank just an expression, like if it breaks i can justify buying a new one. I didn't actually want it to break. I traded it in by the way, and got $100 off the gopro hero7
Nice, thank you very much! I have one question though. For the voice-over narration do you record the audio while playing the final cut video preview? Or what tips would you give for that process?
As long as the preview doesn't freeze, your voiceover should be in sync. If your project file is too computationally intensive, for instance you've applied a warp stabilizer to shaky footage, the preview might freeze. In which case, you might need to export the file, and then do the voiceover on the exported file, combine, and export again.
