Thanks Tristan. Your Dad has just been waiting for this. I have learned such a lot about using my iPhone camera in this vlog. It is just so informative not only for action photos but general use if the iPhone camera and settings. An excellent vlog Thanks. 🎉🎉
Thank you Tristan, you have this rare talent to present the content in a clear and interesting way. My experiences from taking photos on the bike: a) I'm always very afraid of the phone falling off from my hand (and most likely it wouldn't survive) b) because I keep the phone in my back pocket, which typically is a sweaty place, the lens is blurry and needs wiping out to remove the sweat c) so I ended up shooting photos using my old action cam (a cheap gopro-like). I keep it in the pocket in a small, un-zipped protective case. Anyway, I really like this iPhone how-to. If not on the bike, it is very useful for everyday use. Cheers!
I saw one of your videoes yesterday when you were biking with another content creator and loved what you were producing. So today I found this vid and I’m learning so much! Never knew I could lock the focus and exposure. How did I not know. Ok onto the rest of the video.
Fantastic! I have 12 pro and never really messed with camera settings. Excited to start using what I just learned! I've seen where lots of pros like yourself are ditching lugging massive cameras around on their bike and are just using Iphones...
0.5x FTW .. pretty pumped on this series and for someone with a background in photography I appreciate the insight your putting out, phone photo skills is definitely a different technique cant wait to see the other videos, cheers
0.5x FTW😂. I have a very basic question. How do you keep from dropping your camera and how do you keep from killing yourself while you are photographing while riding. The obvious answer is “practice” but I am looking for other tips. I have the large form factor iPhone 12 and I find it difficult to hold so that I am not nervous that I will drop it.
Awesome video. This will take my bicycle photography to the next level. I've almost crashed trying to get exciting photos in the midst of action. I finished Race Across America in 2021 and Race Across the West in 2022 and had great opportunities for photos during the races. Some of the items you discussed would have made my photo activities a lot easier. Can't wait for your next videos as I've got great plans for 2023.
Just the video I was looking for - Thanks Tristan! I was looking for the other videos of the series and couldn't find them - will you do more of those? Would be much appreciated.
Thank you 🙏🏼 Yeah the next one is coming, I’ve just been a bit flat out with work and travel this year it’s been hard to get it done. But I promise it’s in the works!
I'd definitely be curious to know how you manage to grab your phone on the fly - mine is typically a mess of sweat mid-ride in my jersey pocket and grabbing it with gloves in chilly conditions presents its own challenges too.
Thanx for this series 🙏🏻 As an amateur photographer I tried bringing my own but found out did not use it on the ride. iPhone is indeed the camera I always have on me
As a resource tool this vlog is fantastic. This is the third time I have watched it and it’s still an excellent refresher guide and what I need to look out for and avoid, Bring on Pt2 + 3
Thanks mate. Apologies for the massive delay for parts 2 and 3..honestly just been a bit overwhelmed with trying to curate what I want to say for part 2. I feel like I’ve got so much information in my brain and lack the skill to get it out properly. I’ll get onto it soon though, I promise. Glad you’ve enjoyed part one so much. 🙏🏼
Hey Bruce, these are the aspect ratios for the cropping of your photo. 4:3 is 4 parts wide to 3 parts high (a slightly rectangular photo), square is square, and 16:9 is a long rectangular frame. I use 4:3 for everything and then crop the image square if I need it in that format.
Hey mate, I don’t use a screen protector but I do use a case generally. I put the phone in my cargo bibs pocket as it’s easiest to access from there. I’ll speak about this more in the coming videos.
0.5x WTF! Great video. I've been increasingly relying on my phone and leaving my mirroless at home recently so this is perfect ttiming...Eagerly awaiting Part 2 😃
Really helpful and good run-through on all the bits I had ignored on my iPhone. The only questions now are how do I corner one handed, or ride no-handed to take a photo? :)
F***ing amazing! Thanks for sharing. I love photography, but don't know much about. Never took time to learn, and with this video (and probably the next 2), at least I can have some more nice pictures with my phone. Many thanks mate!
0.5x FTW thanks Tristan. so interesting. I never knew what all those icons were.I have a Samsung android phone. I'll have to play around with it now. xx
Ah haha. No, no gimbal or anything. Sometimes I carry my camera on a gorilla pod so it’s more comfortable to hold and film myself, but not for on the bike.
Thanks for the great tips Tristan... I just discovered your content and immediately subscribed!! I have an iphone 11 pro max and have it with me on every ride. I wanted to ask two questions. What size iphone do you find works best for cycling... the pro or the pro max? I like the max's bigger screen and size; however, I find that handling it one handed while riding can become cumbersome. Second, what case do you ride with and do you use any sort of pop socket on the back to help with the one handed photo/video'ing. Your advise is always appreciated!
0.5x FTW - i've always found that the 1x lens 26mm too wide for taking shots at my bike. the distortion is visible even at a reasonable distance (3/4 of the frame with the bike), namely the triangle seems slightly larger compared to wheels etc proportionally, compared to how they are seen to naked eyes. Personally i'm a 50mm guy, so i generally always step back and use zoom lens (75mm ish on the iphone?) to take shots of my bike..happy to sacrifice some pixels for that. Keep up the good vids bud! FYI - would you mind sharing your height and bike size/stem length? i see you have a low saddle/bar drop while having a relatively long reach. looks great, aero and aggressive, strong core!
0.5x FTW. Loved this one. Started following you for your pics… stayed for your ‘tube. Seamlessly blended together. At last I can take shite pictures and not blame the settings, just the user. 😂
Love this, especially the Chase Jarvis quote. I always remind myself of that quote when I just get that spark of inspiration. Man!!! Lots of years of pro experience in 15'. Best tutorial ever! Can't wait to go out tomorrow on my bike to take some photos..MOLTES GRAÇIES!!!
I saw one of your videoes yesterday when you were biking with another content creator and loved what you were producing. So today I found this vid and I’m learning so much! Never knew I could lock the focus and exposure. How did I not know. Ok onto the rest of the video.
Thanks mate. Hope you're still keen for part 2 - it's just gone live.
Your instagram stories are out of this world!! I look forward to watching this because I love cycling & photography
Thank you! 🙏🏼
The only thing better than the great phone and photography tips in this video, is your willingness to share them. TY
4:14 Fourth way to access your camera while riding: voice activation! Really enjoyed the video Tristan - thanks for sharing! And 0.5x FTW!
Thanks man, great suggestion. I didn’t actually know this one so that’s epic!
Fantastic! I have 12 pro and never really messed with camera settings. Excited to start using what I just learned! I've seen where lots of pros like yourself are ditching lugging massive cameras around on their bike and are just using Iphones...
0.5x FTW OMG Tristan this is really great. I never even knew half these setting existed. Can't wait for the next two episodes.
Thanks mate! Part 2 is now available, part 3 is coming soon
0.5x FTW .. pretty pumped on this series and for someone with a background in photography I appreciate the insight your putting out, phone photo skills is definitely a different technique cant wait to see the other videos, cheers
brilliant. the iphone is such a powerful creator that we can use to capture our ride. great tips!!
So excited for this series!
Fantastic vid, Tristan! I learned a million things! Several times said to my dog, what?! and omg I didn’t know that! Thank you!

There’s a gadget for climbers called reeloq that prevents your phone from falling, but never tried that while biking…
Tristan you are a good teacher. You explain things so oldies like me understand. Thank you. Looking forward to next camera lesson. xx
Amazing Tristan! Already buzzing for Part 2!
Part 2 and 3 available already ? great serie ! Thank you man !
Thanks man. Quite late to this, but part 2 is now live!
Thanks for the tutorial! Where can I watch part 2 and 3?

Great video Tristan. Explained the workflow and the rationale behind your decisions brilliantly. Nice one!

Great tips mate. Didn't realise I could keep the filter on when I open the camera all the time. Cheers Matt
What a fantastic video, learned loads, thanks Tristian👏
I'd definitely be curious to know how you manage to grab your phone on the fly - mine is typically a mess of sweat mid-ride in my jersey pocket and grabbing it with gloves in chilly conditions presents its own challenges too.
Fabulous stuff, Tristan. Totally frustrated with my Garmin Pro, so this will help. Can't wait to see the next segments.
Thanks! Very informative, youve got a new subscriber here!! Looking forward to the next part
0.5x FTW Hey Tristan! Thanks for the great pro tips, this is exactly what I needed and looking forward for part 2

iPhone is indeed the camera I always have on me
For me, gold. I had my phone open while I was watching and learning all kinds of new things. 🥳

Thanks mate. Part 2 is now live. Better late than never, right?
This is epic man, thank you. Looking forward to the next few videos.
Any reason why you prefer the 30 FPS over 60 FPS for videos @ 4K?
.5xFTW! Thank you so much! I learned so much from this one little video.
Tristan my iPhone just has 4:3, square or 16:9 frame size. Can you explain what they are and which be best for cycling images on the go. Thanks

Thanks Declan. Part 2 is now live!
Thanks Tristan. Do you use case or screen protector? What pocket you put the phone in? This details will be very helpful.
Hey mate, I don’t use a screen protector but I do use a case generally. I put the phone in my cargo bibs pocket as it’s easiest to access from there. I’ll speak about this more in the coming videos.

0.5xFTW! Good Watch. Waiting for pt 2
Thanks mate. Part 2 is now live if you'd like to have a watch.
0.5 FTW. Keep up the great work Tristan. CO78
Also the zoom lens is the best for taking pictures of your bike against a wall or something. Nice and flat
Agreed. Zoom lens helps keeping verticals vertical, that’s for sure.
Amazing video, looking forward for rest of the series
0.5x FTW thanks for a great video Tristan👍I’ve learned so much from this. Much more useful than watching endless gear reviews!
Thanks Graham..really glad to hear that mate! 🙌🏼🙏🏼

Thank you for these great and simple but certainly effective tips. What many people also forget is to clean the lens before taking a photo ;-)
Thanks mate. Yeah that’s tip #1 for video 3! An absolute must-do.
"0.5xFTW" - I cannot seem to find a dramatic filter on my phone (Samsung) got any tips for the next best option?
0.5 FTW, class video as always!
Thanks mate!
Please do part 2+3 I just got an iPhone. Also for the selfie shots on the bike do you flip the phone around to use the better wide angle lens
Yeah, for selfies I use the wide angle lens rather than the typical selfie lens.
@@tristantakevideo thanks for reply! love the videos
Part 2 is now live if you're keen to check it out! Little late but hopefully you get something out of it.
bloody hell mate ive been waiting a year!!@@tristantakevideo

Ets un grande Tristan!! Bon video!
Makes sense. Thx for the tutorial.
Amazing tips, thanks Tristan. Just wondering do you use your iPhone for your on bike videography as well?
Thanks man. Yep! iPhone for pretty much 95% of what I film, other than the parts where I’m sitting at the dining table talking directly to the camera.
Love this, especially the Chase Jarvis quote. I always remind myself of that quote when I just get that spark of inspiration.
