Dr. Axe is spot on when he talks about taking certain supplements on a short term basis only, such as Melatonin and Valerian Root. I nearly died of liver failure in 2005 when I took a combination of Valerian Root, Melatonin, GABA, Hops, Passionflower, and 5HTP over a 9 day period. At first, I took the recommended dosage, but that didn't work, so I increased the dosage to two or three times the recommended dosage. My skin, nails, and eyes turned yellow and it felt like I had a horrible case of the flu. I became so weak and felt like I was dying, because I was dying. I drove myself to the E.R. and could barely walk into the E.R. As soon as the E.R. nurse saw me, she called a "STAT", and within five minutes I was placed on a gurney and hooked up to IV fluids. I spent nine miserable days in the hospital and a local clergy was called in to talk to me in case I didn't make it through. I had Heparin injections in my belly every day, my urine was dark amber, and I was as weak as a newborn kitten. After I was released from the hospital, it took me well over a year to recover.
I've suffered insomnia for decades now and found out the hard way that OTC 'natural' sleep remedies can be just as dangerous as pharmaceuticals when you overdose on them. It's not something to mess with. I will try Dr. Axe's recommendations for insomnia. It's time for me to try something different to conquer this lifelong battle.

So did you cure your insomnia??!!!!????

    • @kaybrown5637
      @kaybrown5637 Год назад +1

@X X No. There's no cure. I was put on 25 MG Seroquel to take 2 hours before bedtime. That worked a few weeks, then I had to take 50 MG nightly. After a few weeks, that didn't work, so I tried 75 MG nightly and that caused chest pain and high blood pressure, so I went back down to 50 MG and began taking cannabis edibles with the 50 MG Seroquel. The cannabis edibles helps me sleep better, but used to make me anxious for about an hour or so. But taken with Seroquel, it helps decrease the cannabis anxiety and helps me sleep. I tapered the Seroquel down to 25 MG last night, and still did the edible, and it seems to lessen the 'hangover' the next day.

***** about 2 weeks ago i had my gallbladder removed. after the first few days after surgery, i felt pretty good, not much stress or anxiety, and i could sleep pretty good. then suddenly one day, for no apparent reason at all, i started feeling a TON of anxiety and stress and im also experiencing a lot of insomnia with it. i have no idea why im feeling these things, im not dwelling on anything, my life is pretty good. but bascially, constantly during the day, i feel stressed out, and its like i have permanent butterflies in my stomach. some times during the day, ill start to feel really good again and normal, and then all of a sudden that stress and anxiety creeps back up again full blast. i went back to my doctor for my follow up on my surgery, i told him about the stress and anxiety and insomnia ive been having. they did some blood work and showed that my white blood cell count was around 14,000, higher than normal. the doctor put me on the antibiotic ciprofloxacin because he believes i might have a small infection in my body somewhere, leading to my high white blood cell count. for the anxiety and insomnia he put me on hydroxyzine 25mg, which seems to be hardly working at all. its been 5 days now since being on the prescription, and im still having the same problems. there seems to be no improvment. what's strange is that even though im hardly getting any sleep, i dont feel tired or sleepy during the days. i feel wired almost, but i have no apparent reason to be wired. i get somewhat sleepy before bed, but even then its like im wide awake and alert. is it possible the drugs arent helping or making it worse? i dont know what else to do, ive treid almost every trick and technique i can think of, including yours. i just want to be able to sleep again... i cant see how people can go years like this. ive had it only for about a week and i feel like im about to go crazy. i just dont know what else to do...

I had severe insomnia for half a decade now. Here are some tips that helped me:
    1) The first thing that helped me was Magnesium Chelate (Nature's Way brand)
    2) Eliminated dairy and butter from diet completely (helped a lot)
    3) Stopped consuming all the processed foods and drinking soda
    4) I try not to eat anything after 6:00pm in order to go to bad at midnight
    5) I go to bed at the same time every night
    6) I spend more time outside in the sun
    7) I eat more fruits and vegetables
    8) I quit smoking
    9) I removed amalgam fillings from my teeth
    10) I exercise whenever i can
...and i still have the fuc@#$% insomnia.
It definitely got better but it's not the deep restful sleep. Now i don't have problems falling asleep but i wake up 20 minutes later for no reason. In the morning i wake up all tired and broken like the mattress slept on me, not the other way around. Major difference now is when i wake up in the middle of night (which is about 50 times) i can usually go back to sleep where as before that was impossible - i'd pretty much have to get up.
What do you think of 5-HTP supplement? Has anyone tried it?
    Thanks!

    • @mpgamer55
      @mpgamer55 9 лет назад +22

+Mickey Bauer Going to bed at midnight may be your problem. Circadian rhythms dictate that we go to bed between 9 and 11pm. If you wait much longer after 11 then your body assumes you need to stay up and gives you a second wind keeping you awake.

Mickey Bauer Are you sure you don't suffer from sleep apnea? You may need to go in for a sleep study and have them observe you and test for that. You may wake up that many times because your breathing is irregular (usually you don't know you have sleep apnea but think you suffer from insomnia) if that's the case they'll give you a cpap machine.

Wow, 5 years? So lucky. Mine was more than 20. Now it happens in short periods when something of particular stress is occurring. But I get more sleep & better sleep overall. I illuminated many stressful issues, people, situations that were constants in my life.
Also, the magnesium advice is very beneficial & lots of physical activity (especially outdoors when possible), something as simple as walking.

He's sooooo right! To anyone struggling with sleep, I had bad insomina for 4 months. I was eating waaaaay too many carbs and my blood sugar was super high.
I went keto and stopped eating processed carbs and only ate very, very small amounts of fruit each day (a few strawberries in a smoothie maybe).
After a couple of weeks of dropping processed carbs, my sleep slowly began to return. My body was stressed from consuming too much processed carbs and even too much fruit can do damage.
I also loaded up on leafy greens, potassium (from wheatgrass juice) and tons of nutrients.

Dr. Axe, I had a panic/anxiety attack about 4 months ago and ever since I haven't felt the same. I began to experience insomnia. Last week I began taking Magnesium Citrate and I've felt a big difference in my body. I also watched how to over come anxiety with breathing and such and I've felt pretty good. My question is, what else should I try to be able to beat this insomnia. I go to bed and just can't fall asleep. I toss and turn even being so tired. My doctor tested me on so many things but all have come back "normal". I feel all she wants to do is prescribe meds all the time. She put me on Zoloft 50mg when I clearly told her I didn't feel depressed. I was crying on one of my appointments and she came to that conclusion. I haven't been taking them since she brought the dose up because I am not depressed. She also prescribed sleep meds which I stopped taking them about 2 days ago to see if I could sleep but couldn't fall asleep. As soon as I felt relaxed I would feel startled. I toss and turn. ugh.. could I have high cortisol levels at night time that keep me from relaxing and going to sleep? what can I do about it? I've changed my diet even more now. I'm eating more greens and seeds and fish in hopes of giving my body more nutrients. I've searched and searched and know meds aren't going to help me but change in diet and taking the right vitamins and supplements will. What advice can you give me? I'm planning to change doctors but I know I'll get another one that will only prescribe me more meds and I want to do this more natural. Any information would be greatly appreciated. :-)

I'm already taking magnesium (nature's calm) which helps on days my stress is low. On higher stress days It's hard for me to stay asleep even after journaling, tapping/meditating and cutting off electronics an hour before bed. I stick to protein and fat sources before bed as well. I usually dream every night but I wake up very groggy. I was thinking of adding in 5 htp or gaba but don't want to become dependent. Any recommendations?

i have suffer from insomnia for 9 years since i was 14 till now 23
of course because of my thoughts its like crazy when im trying to sleep but i think the main reason why i cant sleep at night.. is because i have Obsessive-compulsive disorder, i have these 2 fit behaviour which is nail biting and hair pulling (trichotillomania:since i was 11)
hair pulling isnt a joke..its embrassing. last time i tried meditate.. its work!!! i can fall asleep less than 5 minutes..but sadly that was the first and last time it happen..maybe im not concentrate enough or maybe my obsessive compulsive disorder over taking me

Please help those of us with sleep maintenance insomnia. It seems to be from cortisol rising too early. No worrying, no mental racing or worry, just simply wake up as of it's time to wake but 2 or 3 hours too soon. Getting to sleep beforehand is as easy as it always was. Getting back to sleep is usually impossible, even with taking supplements after waking or doing relaxation or any other techniques.

I find that having my tv turned on helps me fall asleep. I usually put on one of the nature channels and end up falling asleep, not because I find nature boring but perhaps because it relaxes me :) I find it extremely hard to fall asleep without the tv turned on and my mind chatter will literally keep me awake till morning if I do not distract it. To much on my mind I guess.

It is widely believed that insomnia and other sleep issues could be related to us staring at screens while in bed. The idea is that these screens emit large amounts of blue light, which fools our brains into thinking it’s day time, and hence, not time for sleeping. There’s way too many factors that affect sleeping. To have a good night sleep is turning down the brightness on all our screens and get anti-bluelight screen filter like ocushield as it will help protect our eyes from the harmful bluelight.

here's my story. i stayed up all the time during the weekends ( im talking 3 and 4 am) and when it came down to school nights, i was terrified of not being able to fall asleep. i would force myself to sleep, but it didn't work, and i'd just cry. crying everyday, turned around and made me depressed. i would just eat, and play on my computer ALL day. and going to sleep, having panic attacks, i don't like. i stopped my body from doing all these things. i wouldn't stay up past 11 and i'd wake up at 6:50 everyday. and surprisingly, it worked. today marks a month since i first experienced my "insomnia attack" and i feel amazing.

Just wear a pair of orange or red colored glasses (prescription or plain glasses) for two or three hours before bedtime.Experiment for one month. Sleep will improve dramatically. There are numerous websites detailing how this types of glasses can block blue lights from entering into your eyes and increase the melatolin supply into the brain really significantly. For me at least the improvements are simply unprecedented.Light is a very overlooked criterion ever to be discussed by anybody, even medics, when they discuss insomnia.

After years of insomnia, I have my diet and exercise under control. Quieting my mind happens when I hold my breath. I hold it until I feel like I'll pass out, then catch my breath and do it again. Forcing the CO2 into my blood is a sedative. Oxygen is a stimulant. I swear by it. My mind calms down, and I fall asleep. It usually only takes five deep holds
