    Be careful on that duplicated snare track processing/EQ. Changing the adjustment frequency/ies and/or levels can also induce phase shift. Great video.

    Honestly, I can't say the snare has ever been tricky unless the snare is junk. You make good videos nonetheless; funny and informative.

  • @MahmoudNader

    To me , the most important thing for snares is clipping .. if the snare isn't clipped then it will drive the mastering limiter to react strongly towards it which leads to a weak snare in the final product ..
    Thanks for the informative video btw

    • @davidbadstubner4582
      @davidbadstubner4582 Год назад

      What? Why would you clip your snare to avoid it driving the “mastering limiter” into distortion?
      You could just mix the snare appropriately... so it doesn’t react poorly with the rest of your mix, using your faders...
      Or not. 🤷‍♂️

    • @MahmoudNader
      @MahmoudNader Год назад +2

      @@davidbadstubner4582 Well you will always gonna have to use Clipping / Saturation on snare in order to achieve that .. plus it sounds good most of the times

    • @davidbadstubner4582
      @davidbadstubner4582 Год назад +2

      @@MahmoudNader my good friend there is never “always”. Everything is “always” interdependent. I think it’s a fad to base mix decisions upon the snare. It is a very important rhythmic component. But it is not the thing that most consumers of music are listening for.
      Invest energy into the vocal or lead melody instrument. And then take time to address the snare.
      If you feel like you have to push the snare into “clipping” to avoid overs on your 2bus then I might say you’re focusing on the wrong elements.
      I also may be wrong. So there’s that.
      But keep on keeping on. Figure out what works for you. Just don’t forget... no one but audio engineers even cares about what is happening with the snare. And most of the time they don’t even care.
      Best

    Phase isn’t a rabbit hole. It’s the basis of audio.
    It’s a problem I see often with mixing (and that I had to).
    When starting out alone, we focus too much on tips and tricks from RUclips and neglect the basics.
    Polarity coherency, phase alignment and phase shifts are the 101 basics of any audio manipulation. Understanding seems annoying but it actually makes you a better engineer with very minimum effort. And for free, instead of buying courses, plugins and such.
    Because all these « pro » engineers. They know the basics. And not understanding the basics is almost not being able to read between the lines when they share a mixing move.
    There is nothing sneaky and mind blowing about this, it’s all extremely basic (and so very powerful) knowledge.

      Well said. The only thing that bugged me about this presentation was not drawing a distinction between the terms "phase" vs "polarity". One doesn't "flip the phase". We flip the "polarity". Phase and polarity are two different things, and the two terms are not interchangeable.

      @Curt Taipale one thing I've learned over years of mixing is that there are people that are very concerned that you know the difference between phase and polarity and there are people who can mix well and the Venn diagram between those 2 types of people does not intersect much.

    I’m also, inarguably, in the kick/bass drum camp. So anything I’m saying should be taken with that into account.
    I very much agree in the filter camp. I don’t use filters unless absolutely necessary.

    Parallel processing helps a ton. Using it effectively will avoid all of this run around. Of course recording the snare properly in the first place is key, but if that’s not ideal then you can augment or sample replace on a case by case basis. It’s silly to make this seem harder than it actually is.

    I guess maybe because I'm a Hiphop guy & I grew up studying Dr.Dre?
    Kicks give me problems, hihats give me problems, bass gives me problems, but the snare? not my trusty snare, NEVER!

      Why fuss over something that almost no one cares about? I mean I’ve spent hours in production land obsessing over snare, but no listener is ever thinking about that element: unless the mix is unfocused. And then they may be drawn to that element wholly because the mix is not focused upon the main elements. I don’t think snare is a main element. It’s definitely a big player, but you can get away with a sub par snare if the vocals and bass are on point.

    Would it be better to use shelving on instruments as well? And high pass only when you must?

    • @PluginAlley
      @PluginAlley  Год назад +1

      it's worth experimenting with, using a shelf instead of a filter on the low end with the instrument can really help keep the energy while getting it out of the way of the other instruments, a fun way to hear the difference on this is to get a nice synth pad and with one eq instance use shelving eqs on the top and low end to get a tighter sound, duplicate the track and then clear out the eq and then use hpf and lpf at around 18/24db cuts and then compare one to the other. This is also a rabbit hole because some shelves and filters will sound more or less musical but it's totally worth it in the long run. McDSP has a set of plugins called filterbank that is pretty dorky and fun, and pro-q3 also allows for some narly shapes.

    I just can’t...
    Phase is a fundamental aspect of all audio. It’s not a rabbit hole, it’s the crux of what we do.
    Snare samples: fine. All the tricks you need to get good snare sound? Fine.
    It’s not a mystical unicorn though. And snares should (arguably) not be the center focal point of the mix.
    Getting shit to work right takes time and knowledge and experimentation.
