I use Waves Max bass for thin vocals, you can adjust the way you thicken the vocal tone exactly, but will try to add bit of Devilloc next time 🙂 Nice tips, btw.!
I’m an amateur but I’ve used devil loc on vocals ever since I got Soundtoys. Right at about the settings you talk about too, it’s a great darkening/thickening distortion on any source but way too aggressive for most things. Vocals and drums are obviously ones that enjoy a good squash and it has almost a tape-like, bit-crushing quality to it. It’s what a Rat distortion pedal is for guitar, but for drums (mainly cymbals and snare) and vocals
Nice tips! One thing I'm not so sure about is aiming for specific amounts of gain (input / output) with compressors, saturators and such, because this depends on the track's loudness. I think it would be better to talk about gain reduction instead, and even then it's good to keep in mind that different performances have different dynamics, so the target amount of GR should be taken as a grain of salt.
Yo, gain staging, recording properly, parallel processing, and automation are the “game changers”. Wait... those are techniques we should be using and taking advantage of all of the time? And they’ve been around for years?! Mind blown.
I love this video - of course?? Great vocals always sound even and balanced - so, level up before going to compression = a nice characterful compression sound -- control at stage one.👍🏽
Great Tips! Generally I would use a quality preamp and a touch of Distressor on the way in, during the recording session.(Or Slate emulations stuff). Before the bounce, vocal rider by Waves could also be useful sometimes. Then the CLA limiter trick with its chain of EQ, compression etc, job done! Cheers!
This is the kind of channel for people who don't read books and who have an attention span so low they need words like PRO, GAMECHANGER, ENDLESS, etc. Christ. The ONE THING you need!!! Just do this trick without knowing what the hell is going on. They're all good tips, but this style is like a snake oil salesman.
Sounds like a good info, but this ADHD/minimum attention span-style editing on the video makes it feel like a scrambled egg instead of solid information presentation. I feel like I need to drink 5 energy shots to be able to extract practical information. I guess it’s aimed at kids who need that kind of bombardment with interruptive unrelated puns etc. More about entertainment rather than sharing knowledge in my opinion. I think Dan Worrall’s videos are good references in that regard. It’s like what Ian Kirkpatrick calls “the rate of information” - too much bells and whistles detract from the main point. Anyways, thank you for sharing this stuff! Looks like you invested good amount of time in this research. Will have to rewatch your vids at slower speed and with a notepad😅 Or maybe you have it posted as text somewhere? That’d be super dope if you do😃
@@PluginAlley I think the pacing is perfect as is. When the video is set to 0.75 "stoner" speed, it's slow enough to easily follow if you need more time to process the audio.
@@Dave-Rough-Diamond-Dunn Some may NOT have english as their first language, and have problem with the pace... Way to "energic". He is just supposed to bring om information, not bring up your heart rate ;-)
@@thesoundresidence Yes, but if you can't keep up, what's stopping you from hitting pause now and then, or playing it at a slower speed? 🤔 I appreciate that he doesn't waste my time and data dragging it out.
Question? Why is there an apparent undertone in this video that automation is a bad thing? It’s arguably the best tool any mixer has to enhance emotional impact. Am I reading into it too much or are people really out there trying not to automate? If the latter is the case don’t let them know... keep smashing your stuff and don’t automate anything...

Interesting -- I love Devil Loc on the drum bus. I will try in on vocals.
it..crushes...pun intended haha, just its pretty sick on vocals!

Dent2 and Phil's cascade are nice on vocals
Do a video just on the CLA tips from this video.
hmm maybe down the line i could do this, i could do an entire series of videos breaking down so many of his tricks!

thanks for giving the video a spin! Working on pacing still.
