Super dope trick at around 11 minutes i was kinda already doing that myself but just to hear it from you makes me glad. That change in dynamic subtle and unconsciously heard/felt/noticed. Love it
Yes love this plugin. I have the UAD version. I like how you utilized going from low vocal waveform with 2.1 and when the vocals get louder the way it smacks it down evenly but really smooth. There is always something to learn about compressors when to use certain settings and not suck the life out of a vocal performance. Thank you. Really cool.
i watched this vid again and was convinced to pick it up on thier black friday sale. it makes a huge difference which i find really translates in the mix. i was using the cla 76 but when i switched over to this comp on some mixes i was working on it immediately made a huge different in the clarity of the vocals. definitely a great tool to have and use
I agree the plugin is good I have the hardware too. But I switched the stock tubes with telefunken and rca it’s amazing and better in my opinion more top end and more warm.
I found the V1 was smoother than the V2 (used it for compressing real strings), then i bought the Tubesessor and realized that they don't even remotely compare. The compression, to be fair is very similar, but when you start to push the gain, very different things happen. So much faster dialling things in with the real thing as well. But a stereo pair... $$$$ or 4-6...$$$$$
Great stuff. This is really the modern professional sound tool of these days, that noone told me of before. And the changing attack and release times trick is also great. This will improve my mixing for sure. Thank you so much, David!
used to work in a studio in montreal with CL-1b and my nickname for it was “the pillow”. its much softer than LA3a which i used for rock vocals. cl1b is great on DI bass too. that big peak around 11:00 i would have automated pre compression not to hit so hard. i like to push into compression with a fader instead of using insert
Automation is cool but with vocals it's VERY tricky if you do it pre compression. You change the performance a lot, also one of the reasons of using compression is the overcompression, that's exactly why - many times - we pick one instead of the other (see 2A). Reducing it just as dynamic control is about 50% of why we compress
I also noticed that l1 limiter in your chain before the cl1b made me wonder why im assuming was to help control that over dynamic vocal especially for genre. But idk if im right cuz i feel like you can use serial compression instead hmmm
You can't swap a limiter with a compressor. They're not the same, they don't do the same things. I use a limiter before a coompressor like the 1B, or 2A so a soft, slow-ish compressor to avoid a few tall peaks to trigger it too much because it if does you either have to lower the threshold too much or, those peaks will sound chocked. You could automate the threshold but I use hardware 99% of the times of vocals and you can't do that with analog, hence the limiter. Limiter limit peaks, compression changes the envelope. Different things, different functions. I have many videos on this.
Another video banger! After all these years making music I'm finally getting a better grasp about the mastering process. Just compression alone is crazy. So interesting how you can use compression (with different settings) depending of sections and dynamics of the track. Also how using automation will complement the amount of compression you need to use. 🔥🔥🔥
Been trying to talk myself out of buying more plugins but the cl1mb has been nagging at me. You sold me! I'll make sure I use your link so you get a cut. Thank you! Would love to hear your thoughts on their mik-e comp as my ik distressor (comprexxor) I like but not love and I feel like the soft tube version might be the one as I love getting some more bite on vocals. Hope you're doing well!
I own the hardware and the plug-in is so good at getting the feel of the hardware that I’ve considered selling the hardware multiple times . If it wasn’t for the fact that the hardware is getting harder and harder to get a hold of, I might have done it . I also love turning knobs . But honestly I use the hardware for just tracking now and the plug-in I’m the mix rather than using it as an insert usually
I agree it is very good. But I almost like the British Class A compressor (Neve 2254/R Diode-bridge) for vocals (and bass) more. What do you think? Shoot out 😎?
David, you really are coercing me into the tools to becoming a Spotify celeb one day; you really are creating a monster via all these tutorials regular vid and RUclips shorts. Nice. I have the hardware and the MK1. The hardware is irreplaceable, love it. But the MK1 is what drove me to get the hardware because I wasn’t too thrill with it. It was OK but I felt it could use a redo. Looks like I will be upgrading it.
Is the point to compress before audio printing or does the signal have to specifically be compressed before entering the preamp? I am using cubase 11 which allows an input bus to which bridges the gap between my preamp and the first audio track. Can I put a compressor there and get close to the same effect or is this a pointless and a waste of cpu? I had just came to this Video from your video of recording with compression. Thank you for all of the information. I have aquired a wealth of knowledge from your vids. Hats off to you
I'm very confused.. You can't put anything before the preamp. The signal path is mic, preamp, anything else. And it cannot be changed as the mic NEEDS a preamp to bring the mic level signal to line level signal which is what EVERY piece of gear require to work. So, you cannot put a mic level signal into a compressor on an eq or anything else.
Thanks David i always think i hate thid comp. I own it for like the last 3 years and the only time i use was when i bought it. I always feel its too slow for direct vocals recording. But it sounds great gotta try it now
Hey Dave, you really haven't used the CL1-B mk2 ? it's been released from a long while... welcome to the party 🥳 i have a 1991 CL-1B and the mkII plugin definitely has that vibe and behavior nailed. Talking about the whole sound the real tube (please don't use cheap valves!) depth and richness still aren't mastered into this or any other pugin... but you surely know that, the blackbox you have into your rack it's the living proof 😋🙌
Very interesting. I love your content and usually agree with you on most things but the cl1b plug-in to me is the worst. It sounds nothing like the hardware and always has a weird pumping sound. I own 2 cl1bs and have had one of them for about 13 years so I’m very familiar with the sound. I could never get the plug-in to sound right. I’ve used both native versions and the UAD version as well. Thanks for all your videos and keep up the good work.
@@mixbustv hey! Thanks , yeah I know that. I’ve used and actually own both native versions as well as the UAD one. The MKII still sounds… pinched I think is the word I’m looking for. It loses size where as the hardware doesn’t do that even at 10db of reduction. Most of the time on lead vocals I’ve just been running clients sessions through the hardware cl1b into my pultec eqp1a. Before I do more work to them in the box. Thanks for the response of course all this is just my opinion and experience!
@@mixbustv hmmm? You can track with the cl1b plugin with uad console software... but i think its a better option, to use it latter as a plugin in the mixing Prozess ^^ by the way, you can upload your files to a service like access analog, to "track" or better print you vocals with a hardware cl1b for a affordable price 😅 sounds like the plugin, but a little bit more detail in the higher mids 😅
GOOD VIDEO DAVID!!!! THIS WILL HELP TONS, APPRECIATE IT! OH IF YOU GET TIME TO ANSWER IM LOOKING AT THE KALI LP6 FOR MY 1ST MONITORS, IS THAT SAFE OR YOU RECCOMEND ANYTHING ELSE?
ya'll are unreal identifying a difference in the vocals. i have a pretty decent and dynamic pair of cans (Focal Elex) and for the life of me I can't hear one iota of difference.
You can't track with plugins. This is very different than a 2A, no one is better than the other but the 1B is definitely more modern, versatile and found in modern music
@@mixbustv Oh okay, is it worse to track with plugins? l have a fairly cheap mic and interface. It’s decent (AKGP120, SSL2 interface) so l thought tracking with plugins(Neve emulation , light plug-in compressor) will make my raw recordings better, would you not recommend to do that?
Thanks David for the Video - I can only agree that a CL1B is for many genres the top pick in case of vocals - plugin sounds „ok“ but the hardware makes a much bigger difference- warmer - more musical overtone’s but the plugin is good as well if u don’t have the chance to use the hardware ;) One question- what u think about the API 2500+ and for which genre and which tracks u would reco him ? Tja is and all the best to you and Bella - as always :)
Thank you from the both of us! I had the 2500 for years, eventually sold it because while I love the tone box, I always ended up preferring something else for either 2bus or drums (the main application you will find this compressor used for). It's a great comp, I just have so many that it didn't get much use.
Why do I found that sometimes mic like SM7B works best on some vocal? The artist recorded a demo vocal with that mic at home, and I brought her to recording studio recorded with u87 and M149. With so many recording takes, I still found that SM7B sounds the best. Is it possible? Or my ear has some problem.......
It is very possible. The SM7 has been a standard studio mic for decades. Why? Because price only matters to some extent, especially with something like vocals. The SM7 is very forgiving on dynamics, it has the best tejection of all mics on the market (useful if one records in a bad room) it handles SPL like a mf and it takes eq very well
@@mixbustv It makes a lot of sense. I guess I may be misleaded by some people. I know people like to emphasize 'the better microphone, the better circuitry in it' Like I was confused." How a 5500 dollar M184 loses to a SM7B' It must be my problem etc... Your professional opinion definitely gives me lots of confidence on the selections. This is also a major problem for beginner audio engineer. Since they know they are not experienced enough yet, they can't grow tastes with their own decision making. They always are lack of confidence on the conditions I just mentioned( cheap vs expensive) The word' if it sounds good, it is good' is never easy to implement.
Damn, loved this many many years ago when I demoed it but it was too expensive for me at the time. Figured I’d get it when the price went down but never did because I got many other options in the mean time. And now you’re telling me it is STILL the best vocal compressor plugin? Damn 😉.
@@mixbustv when i used it in auto mode it didn't but in manual it always pumped, i first tough it was a bug but i think it's like that on purpose, but a ratio of 2 did pump less than 4 which was unbearable for me and a ratio of 2 could work on certain material.
Hey David, very helpful and informative video as always! I wanted to ask, what do you think of the TLA-100A from Softube? (As it's an opto compressor too)
I tried these two in depth and ended up not using it this much. I find the TLA100A emulation much better than the CL1B emulation. The TLA is a sort of "back opto" where a LA2A is a "front opto" : one puts the vocal in your face, the other one more in the back, colors are not so different. However, I find getting much different results when using tube emulation compressors and my choices are now : LA2A emulation (AO or IK), or Arturia's tube STA, or DDMF's MDE. CL1B and TLA100A are not really used anymore and I kinda regret to have bought them.. Just my 2 cents, but it's not this different from good LA2A you can find for free (AO in mind). Choosing a vocal compressor is choosing a colour, a flavor, and these have to be unique imo
I think this plugin chokes the vocals more than any other compressor plugin I have. It's just my opinion. I think Softube did an awful job with this plugin. Nothing like the hardware. It's way too grabby too and pumping that should not be there. I really love the Mike E though.
@@mixbustv thanks for the reply! Love your videos! I had the mk11 but sold it. I think it dulls every vocal I put it on. The mojo and the crispyness of the hw is completely lost in the plugin. Again, this is just my opinion. I prefer other plugins for the cl1b vibe. And you are right! There is no pumping in this video
@@mixbustv I'm not saying he's right, but didn't you just tell someone else you'll only review a plugin (The God Particle) if they get in contact with you? That sure makes it seem like you're in it to make deals. Maybe you want them to get in touch with you for other reasons. I don't have all the info. Just an observation.
Needed this, just got a vocal off fiver and it's so dynamic I think the mic must of been on a yoyo

They always are lack of confidence on the conditions I just mentioned( cheap vs expensive) The word' if it sounds good, it is good' is never easy to implement.
Can you do a review on The God Particle plug-in ?
If the company gets in touch with me sure
Retro 176 is going to be thr next big thing with vocals
It's a mu, it's great, but very peculiar, definitely not a go to or as versatile as CL1B or a 76
@@mixbustv CL1B to transparent no color at all
How does it compare to LA2A soundwise?
Cleaner, a lot more versatile. It's one of the tracking standards for modern vocals
Softube: zero disappointment
I want these multitracks soooo bad :(
Damn, loved this many many years ago when I demoed it but it was too expensive for me at the time. Figured I’d get it when the price went down but never did because I got many other options in the mean time. And now you’re telling me it is STILL the best vocal compressor plugin? Damn 😉.
MKII is very different from MKI
@@mixbustv ah yes, it is an updated version of course.
plugin wise the plugin pumps, don't know if they fixed it with a new update.
That's what I wanted to say, I felt it was pumping as hell while demoing, I hear the pumping on these Dave's examples as well...
MKI used to, MKII is very different. But it's also settings. CL1B is very grabby for being an opto and low ratio is the key
Did you notice excessive pumping on all types of material?
@@kelainefes yeah it doesn't matter the material it pumped also on bass it messed it up.
@@mixbustv when i used it in auto mode it didn't but in manual it always pumped, i first tough it was a bug but i think it's like that on purpose, but a ratio of 2 did pump less than 4 which was unbearable for me and a ratio of 2 could work on certain material.
Wow
Distressor for me
I like that one aswell. Any tips on how u like to use it for your vocals?
Hey David, very helpful and informative video as always! I wanted to ask, what do you think of the TLA-100A from Softube? (As it's an opto compressor too)
ruclips.net/video/Vjmevw9S0Qo/видео.html
Try MKII, you don't hear pumping in this video..
@@gdansk12349 what vocal compressor plug-in you recommend or like to use?
«This video was sponsored by Softube»
Only not, lol you people are funny you NEVER get it right 😂
@@mixbustv I'm not saying he's right, but didn't you just tell someone else you'll only review a plugin (The God Particle) if they get in contact with you? That sure makes it seem like you're in it to make deals. Maybe you want them to get in touch with you for other reasons. I don't have all the info. Just an observation.
