  • Sometimes you're not where you want to be in your creative adventure. And when you realise that, you feel like giving up. But what if you embrace the wait? What if you focus on what's in front of you and you make it about having a creative adventure rather than getting to a destination?

In this sewing vlog I am sewing the Protea Trousers by Paradise Patterns and I am talking to you about WHAT TO do when you’re not where you thought you’d be by now in your skills, in your craft, or just in your life.
The Protea Trousers were at the top of my sewing list for my spring wardrobe.
I was very intimidated by trousers, mainly because I haven’t sewn trousers in two years and also, because, let’s face it, trousers aren’t the easiest things to sew.
Sadly, these trousers confronted me with the reality, that I am not where I thought I was as a sewist.
I made a lot of mistakes and very often I felt like giving up.
But I am glad I didn’t give up on this pair of trousers. They taught me so much, and even though they took a lot longer than I thought they would, I have now done it. I have reached the goal, and I can enjoy them.
I sewed the pattern in size 4, and the fabric is linen from Merchant and Mills.
For this project I used a sewing machine, scissors, rotary cutter, cutting matt, clipping shears, seam ripper, iron, pins and interfacing.
Everything is filmed and edited by myself.
Hope you enjoy this Sewing Vlog❣️

There is a saying, "It's going to take as long as it takes. Just keep showing up!" Well done. One of the things that is most gratifying about sewing is that it teaches you a lot about yourself. Keep inspiring Alexandra. ❤ (I am 70 and I think I have learned this throughout the years. 🙂)

Keep going and don't give up! I have been sewing for a third of my life and still have days where projects don't turn out the way I thought/want. Yes and even using the seam ripper multiple times in a row for the same seam. You are not alone!
The more you sew the faster and better your skills will get. It used to take me a whole day (or more) to sew in a jacket zipper. Now it's only a few minutes. Even if you aren't fast right now, or don't sew in the zipper correct, or your stitching is uneven, it's ok. You learned something new that will help you for your next sewing project and help you get better as a sewist. keep up the amazing work! You got this!!!

I sew my first pair of pants few weeks ago. It was not for me, but for my partner for event we were going to on Saturday evening. I cut the pattern on Wednesday, cut the fabric on Thursday and started sewing on Friday 5pm. The pressure and work flow made it so that I finished sewing when i was told its too late at 3,55 am Saturday morning and my partner wanted to go sleep 😆 I finished them fully during afternoon. Lets spread it out next time little bit 😁 I also did not know for most of the sewing if it will fit, but they do and perfectly and my partner loves them. Now I need such pretty pants as you have for myself. Thank you for beautiful video 😍

Absolutely loved this video. You know I love all your videos. What I loved about this was the honesty, the rawness and the humour. Saying the fabric moved around when cutting and you sewed the wrong bits together. Sewing is amazing but often also frustrating! I love that you show that. When you cried 💔 I so felt for you. That feeling when you realise its not right and you're like NOOOOOO. I made the paradise pattern sommar camisole this week and at one point my machine did something crazy and i hadn't used a jeseey fabric before and it took me ages ans then didn't fit me 💔 the bra is way too small for the girls 😂 so now i have to unpick and go again but I just wanted to wear my new top! And it might sound weird but I could hear your voice saying... Sewing is a journey, you still learnt new things today ❤️
So thank you for being my internal sewing voice 😂
The trousers turned out beautifully 😍😍😍

Love, loved this video somehow you always make difficult topics beautiful by your words and I admire and appreciate that. Honestly I love how these pants came out and so glad to see your finished product despite how long it took, it didn't matter it was worth it (not just saying that because you were frustrated with them) they are stylish. I'm happy to hear a topic like I'm frustrated about not reaching a goal being discussed a lot of RUclipsrs make content on pretending there's a perfect world or on clickbaity fake entitled drama and it isn't for me. This sort of down to earth , real life content is what I needed this morning in the rainy Caribbean where I live. Life can be hard anywhere and in a 3rd world country even more so, it's made it hard for a lot of us to handle the disappointment of not being where we want to be. For me it's professional life difficulties at the moment and honestly this encourages me to keep trying. The world isn't all perfect we all have difficulties no one knows but we all are blessed in special ways too and this helped me to appreciate this. I really appreciate the lesson of changing the mindset instead of persevering or quitting and giving ourselves space to be human instead of thinking we should be productive robots because in that space is where we learn. Lately I've been thinking to myself how long will a project take you and then how long will you use it if it even takes 2 weeks but you'll use it for 2 years I think the 2 weeks well worth it. Thank you for this video

Yayyyyy gurl you did it Ms Alexandra!!!!!!. Im here in the PNW of America going thru the same exact thing sticking with it and finishing, that is the name of the game. Way to hang in there until the very end. So easy to give up when the going gets tough every step you take but slowing down and taking a break is a good start. Regrouping and planning new ways of attack is always helpful. Reference books are extremely helpful. In the west we are all going to have to learn to sew ALL of our own clothes just like our grandparents. In making our own clothes it causes us to appreciate the process and not take for granted the work and skill that goes into making a well fitted garment tailor made for you by you. Good job, now for a Sunday walk in your new pants.

Hi! I so love your channel!!! You are so encouraging and I just love your content! Did you make the dress that you are wearing? It’s so beautiful! Is there a pattern for it? Watching from the USA. ❤️

Thank you so much for such kind words! I didn't make the dress, but The New Craft House (a fabric shop in London) have a dress pattern that's similar, so check it out! X Thank you for watching and being here! X

Loved this!! Did you end up doing a toil or did you feel confident with the sizing? Trousers scare me 😂

Hi Tessa, no sadly I didn't! What I did was measure a pair of trousers I love at the waist and the length. So I took notice of the waist measurements of the waist and the length and found the size that matched the closest on the pattern. Hope this helps. Yes, it's very daunting when you know you're about to put a lot of work in, it better work haha! X

I've been struggling with my own pair of trousers for 3 years. Will this be the motivation I need to complete them?

When using a rotary cutter my fabric won’t stay in place. I use electric scissors and have no problem.
