5 SEWING PROJECTS THAT *SCARE ME*

  • Let’s talk sewing anxiety and my personal sewing fears.
In today’s video I talk about 5 sewing projects that I want to tackle but scare me so much. Is this what every sewist is like? Or is it just me?
I think it’s important to be honest with ourselves about our fears around sewing and also try really hard not let the fear of sewing and trying something new in our craft paralyse us.
I am going to try and tackle each sewing project that I mention in this video by taking my time and taking it step by step. I reckon I would be so happy if I just got on with it.
I would love to gain new sewing skills by doing things I have never sewn before.
I think that’s the beauty in learning and growing. At first you’re scared of something but once you face that fear and move past it the world becomes a place of opportunity.
Do share in the comments what are some sewing projects that intimidate you I would love for us to chat.
If you like this video check out my other sewing videos and do consider subscribing to this channel.
I make sewing/ fashion videos every week, I topically post about patterns, sewing projects, sewing chats, fashion and lifestyle.
I am on Instagram as well.

I taught sewing for many years. All beginners have these fears. Making mistakes is part of the journey. Make more mistakes. You can always do it over. Make samples, mock ups, a muslin before cutting into your good fabric. Buy the pillow insert. Then make the cover. Have fun. Your seam ripper is your best friend. Baste things together first. Have fun.

Part of the beauty in sewing is diving into projects that seem impossible at first, sometimes wanting to pull your hair out and questioning your sanity💁🏻‍♀️😆. One of my best friends approached me earlier this summer to help make a memory bear out of her late father’s shirt as a wedding gift for her little sister. I’d never never sewn a teddy bear, but off to RUclips I went to study tutorials until I found one that worked and wasn’t too complex. I thrifted a corduroy mens shirt to muslin the bear pattern. This was also my first time sewing w corduroy fabric. Next up, cutting my friend’s dad’s shirt, which was color blocked btw so envision working w 4 different colored fabrics and only having one shot to cut and ensure your pattern pieces coincides w the color block. That made me sweat, not gonna lie! But let me tell you, when I completed that beautiful bear and sent a pic to my gf-so much joy and happy tears! I got another sewing rush, urge to do more for my gf so using some of the scraps left, I made her a baby bear as a surprise gift, When I handed her the main bear for her sister’s wedding gift the next day, she hugged it so tight w tears in her eyes. After we both settled down from crying, I handed her a gift bag w the baby bear wrapped inside-she thought it was another handmade gift like a headband etc, and when she pulled out the baby bear, the tears continued . I can’t even begin to describe how this filled my heart. I’m so humbled my dear friend entrusted me w this special gift for her baby sister and so grateful I learned to sew in quarantine because sharing this hobby I love w those I love-so priceless!❤️I love your videos because you always keep it real! Not all projects end in success, but again, that’s part of the beauty in 🧵 🪡❤️. Can’t wait to see what you make next!

Upholstery is a different kind of skill but in the end it’s all just fabric. Do some research, run up a test sample and if it works just take a deep breath and cut! It’s just fabric!🤓 The only time I mess with soft goods is when the design in my head is too weird to buy. Consider your sewing machine power as well. Have passed on a few projects because I thought it’d be too much stress on my darling Bernina. Another great video!

You talk to yourself the same way I do!!! 🎉 ❤🎉 Cutting is my biggest fear when it comes to sewing. I bought myself some fabric to make my own ie romaneasca, but I am scared to death to cut into the fabric. So, guess what I did!? I went to the thrift store and bought a bunch of men’s dress shirts, cut them into rectangles that correspond to the parts of a traditional Romanian shirt with “altita”, and now I am sewing them together by hand to create the shirt. The process would be faster if I used a sewing machine, but why go the easy way, right? Anyways, I totally relate to the fear you’re describing, but as you say it is a learning process and we all need to punch that fear out of our lives and just do it!

    • @AlexandraBurnett

@@AlexandraBurnett hand sewing?!?! OMG I have spent hours and hours a day hand sewing. So much so that my right shoulder hurts and my right hand gets cramped, yet I cannot tell you how magical and satisfying it is to pierce the fabric with my needle and pull the thread through creating stitches that make up a garment. Although I can stitch with invisible stitches I choose not to simply because I believe that if you’re going to make something by hand it should be obvious it was done by hand especially in this fast track world of “instant” we live in. I am truly blessed to have the privilege of doing things I enjoy and this includes my art, my crocheting, and my teaching. Although I wish I didn’t need to beat the traffic to make it to work every day, or deal with the bureaucracy of education, I choose to immerse myself in beauty as much as humanly possible. “Do what you love and you won’t work a day in your life”, they say, but I would like to add that when you do something you truly love hard work is welcomed and cherished. All good things come with a lot of hard work and passion.

As per usual loved this video. First of all the bits that made me laugh... Because I'm basic 😂 (by the way you are anything but). The bit where you said you didn't need need it but you needed it (we all get that feeling) and when you said I'm putting Chanel on me 😂 Hipster white girl style is a vibe in my opinion.
I hard relate to so much of what you said. I also want to make an advent calendar! One of my besties works at Maker and Son who make those cloud like sofas. So beautiful but so spenny. I believe in you that you could make ALL of these things. The headboard would look incredible. The lampshade, if you haven't seen I think Rosary Apparel on here has a tutorial for a pleated lampshade although I know sometimes it's not the tutorial that's the problem it's just the fear. You can do it 💪🏼 The ruffle cushion is so cute and you've made me want one haha.
I am exactly the same. I think about starting a project and then I think... Where are you going to get the fabric from? Where will you get the filling/ batting etc from? How much is that all going to cost? Is it going to take me the next 5 years to finish it??? Will I EVER finish it?!
You're so right. Better to do something than nothing but it's hard sometimes isn't it. Thank you for filming this. Hope you enjoyed your date day with your husband. You looked gorgeous as always!

I am scared to sew any kind of apparel. It’s not the cutting fabric part, or the sewing part. It’s that I straight up just don’t know what fitting adjustments I need to make for them to fit me. I don’t know which of my measurements to use, and which to adjust for. It bothers me so much, because I have a ton of beautiful fabrics and a ton of beautiful patterns to sew up. But I also have a dress I just can’t make fit me, and a pair of trousers that are simultaneously too big and too small. So I’m not making anything at all.

I totally identify with the done deal in my head! Sometimes I think I'll be wearing things I've finally made when they're decades out of date like the lady I remember from my childhood who was dressed in the style of the 1910s (it was the 60s). That said she was stylish and I've never forgotten her! I resolve those hurdles (sometimes-invisible zips eek!) by having a sewalong with my best buddy (I should point out she's in Yorkshire, I'm in Italy). Try an upholstery class in Oxford (or the surrounding countryside?) and go for it?! There are some great adult education classes out there and they're very affordable!

I would say sewing an upholstery are two totally different things with some crossovers. Do you really want to do those upholstery projects you should go take an upholstery class.

Yes, I guess they are two different things! I didn’t think about it that way! Thank you for opening my eyes!
Maybe this is what I need from someone for Christmas! I am putting it on my list. I am going to ask for some sort of course because I think I have big visions for my sewing but my skills limit me!!
