The box cutter bit made my toes curl.JEeeeeezzzzzzzz!!
Cutting towards yourself is totally acceptable as long as you understand and prep a stop method.
I am fascinated! Watch alle your Videos in one Go ... you live my Dream. Coming from a Country with no access to Oceans, it seems surreal to dream about a Life you do, but ...
Thank you very much for this Reminder, that woke up a long buried Wish and Dream. Best of Luck to you!
she did a good job on the whole deck and the whole cockpit!!! nice job Kelsey
Sooo awesome. Another big thanks for sharing that with us. Can't wait for the next episode!
Awesome you are heading to Cuba. You have a great boat for it. 'Teak' looks amazing.
The constant [edited] optimism is refreshing. You two compliment each other well, I'm rather jealous. After so many weeks of work it's going to be nice to see you two working together to achieve new goals like Cuba and beyond. Deck/boat looks great, confidence/you two look great, time to manipulate those winds and feed us some more videos.
Kelsey!! Never cut toward your hand like that! One slip and you'll have a severe cut with that razor knife! Cut away from you or too the side pulling the knife. If it slips it will miss you or your hand. Be safe :) Can't wait to see Cuba!!!
You have the cutest dog ever! Such personality! :)
THE DECK IS DONE!!!!!! I'm drinking a beer with ya!!! That is so awesome, great job.
Just found your channel this past weekend and have powered through all your episodes. Boats looking great! I’m excited for you guys in your adventures ahead. Thank you guys for sharing your story with the world. I hope to be following your footsteps in a few years. As it’s also my dream to be doing what your currently living. Your videos have been an inspiration to me as I find myself in an almost identical spot to you guys when you first started this. Best of luck, and I look forward to watching more.
Deck Looks Awesome Kels! I am excited for you guys! I've gotta find a deck hand like that!
I'd be curious to see what your $1200/3 month provision list looked like.
And a heads-up about Cuba and InReach: Satellite phones are apparently contraband, unless you get a permit before you enter Cuba, from their Ministry of Informatics and Communications. Be careful about getting express permission for anything that can 'transmit' in any way, many countries restrict radios way more seriously than the US does. (In China, bringing in a transmitter without permission can be charged as espionage. Ouch.)
You will like Cuba it's an amazing place.
..... Great job on the decking Kelsey .... the great thing is that every time you step on deck you can have the satisfaction that you did the decking, and a mighty fine job too .... laughing ... can you imagine not every spare moment having the thought that the deck needs completing ..... was there a fist pump or two on completion ..... have fun be safe .....
You guys are becoming serious experts on artificial teak application. That cockpit looks fabulous. That's the best place to finish, the area that you'll see the most and where you are the top of your game.
bahahaha NO an expert would NEVER CUT TOWARDS THEMSELVES. that is the most basic of shit to know. rookies at best.
Safety nazis abound. I've seen craftsmen from all over the world use knives in ways that would make those who were trained in basic boyscout safety cringe. Rules of thumb are for beginners. Experts know when they can break the rules.
That's all you've got? Insults?
What a sad little youtuber troll...
ok nancy boy, take away the insults and i still asked a question, does she strike you as being the kind of "expert" you were talking about? idiot
I'll see you out there captain...
john fare you guys thinking about putting up netting to help keep Roo from going overboard?
NEVER EVER cut towards yourself! OMG! PLEASE NEVER do that!
Do you understand that in the web between your thumb and forefinger is an artery? I about jumped out of my chair when I saw you shoving that utility knife towards the web of your thumb and finger. Not to mention all the very complex tendons and ligaments that are about your hand. Knock off that kind of crap, you get out to sea and cut yourself badly it won't end well. You have done a great job on the teak work. I am very glad you still have all the parts and pieces of your hands intact.
Just catching up! I know things are different now, but that is super nice job on the teak!!
Cutting towards your finger... I also like to live dangerously.
If you cut towards yourself the nastiest of trolls will come out and try to bite you on RUclips.
You can also get scars, which you can talk about for the rest of your life, or even lose bits of yourself which you can also talk about for the rest of your life.
Hahaha
Remember getting scolded by my dad as a teenager when cutting cheese a the breakfast table.
“Don’t cut away from yourself, if the knife slips you’ll cut my throat!”
Typical rebellious teenager answers;
“Yeah, right! If the knife slips cutting towards myself, I’ll cut my own throat!”
Had to duck fast to avoid getting slapped!
Yeah, that one gave me the chills :-)
Great vids can’t wait for more!
The deck work looks great.. You guys have worked hard on it..
Great work on the deck you must be excited to have it all done !!
very impressed with the teak deck upgrade!
Watching you cut towards your finger, on your arm and almost into your thumb made me cringe!!! Oh my gosh be careful, you don't want to rely on some of the tropical doctors to reattach a digit!
Yeah, saw that too. As Heather says below, cut away from yourself!
I was thinking the same thing.. And i'm one who has done that MANY times, and the last time i did it, i received 22 stitches in three of my fingers, all three fingers was cut clean to the bone, I could see the bones.. And I will never do that ever again.. lol..
Yeah, that was a cringe moment - glad she's done with that!
Yep same reason I came to leave a comment. Works well this way up to the moment the knive might slip out and then you have a big problem. Always make sure that in case of a slip out of the material the knive can't hit you. Would be a pitty to see you getting hurt. For the rest a well done job. looks great and without the work you would have on real teak.
Nah, I can understand why she cut that way, more control, the decking is like rubber and needs steady pressure, it was fine, Kelsey is the queen of decking.
This is the reality show as far as I can see, love the hard work, dogs not impressed 😊 however keep on sailing guys , god Bless and I hope all your wishes come true.
Never cut towards yourself with a knife I'm like wowwww but your A OK👌🏻
Stay safe..
Saw that knife wow really y dangerous,
Had to watch you using the craft knife with my eyes closed Kelsey, no fear !!!!!
The main character of these videos is....................................... Roo!!! That little guy makes the show!!!
Teak looks amazing! If you need spending money, you can always take jobs installing it for others! LOL! One question, I see lots of people showing provisioning but they do not tell us how they do it. Do you have a pre-set menu? Do you just purchase the things you normally have on hand week in and week out? Do you work of off a spread sheet? How do you budget your food allowance and your food itself? Please let us in on your secrets. Thanks and again teak looks great! You must be really proud of the job you've done!
Good question! Honestly, we just bought 4-5x what we usually buy from Costco as we typically eat the same meals anyhow. No spreadsheets or anything :) We save the spreadsheets for our refit costs & expenses!
Gotcha Ya! Seems like you guys eat a pretty healthy lifestyle, lots of beans and lugunes. Wish you would publish a cookbook because for us un-imaginitive types I never know what to make. You menus seem like they are all pretty much made from dried stores and supplemented with some fresh veggies or in this case some nice fresh spices. Of all the chores involved in boating, cooking is the worst one in my opinion....LOL! Please help us single sailors out and give us a new recipe at the end of each video that way I can copy it and start developing some meals plans for my boat. Thanks and as always great video!!!
Kelsey's cookbook is on the list :)
Great job Kelsey. Your a lucky man Ryan!
Obligatory You're*
Thx for correcting me. I hope you feel better now?
I do thx.
L33tSpeed - obligatory (comma) thanks.
Nice job Kelsey! 4:09 Careful with the knife, always cut away from body parts or you’ll end with nasty wound.
Great work Kelsey!
A tip for your documents, have laminated copies of the registration/title and your passports. Sometimes inspectors and immigration officers will try to take your originals and make you pay cash under the table to get them back, if so tell them they can see the originals if you go to an actual immigration office and usually they'll drop it and just check your laminated copies.
A keeper for sure! Looks great!
Hahahahaha!!! I was thinking the same thing watching Kelsey trimming those pieces;-D The deck looks phenomenal, but phew that was a lot of work. I'm not sure the first place I would go would be a communist country, but different strokes right? Have a great trip! Can't wait for next Thursday!
Ya got that right just live life to the fullest take the jumps and don’t believe everything ya see on tv 📺
You 2
Beautiful boat!!!
Gotta feel good to get that teak done! Looks great guys
What if any are the restriction to Cuba for your dog? How about from Cuba back to US? I would be nervous about that
Awesome job guys. Thank you for sharing. What was the cost for the sqf ? And if you can tell me from where did you guys purchases the teak.? I have in plan to do the same job on the boat. Thank you and have foot of water under your keel.
You'll have to hire someone help for Kelsey if you want to build that cabin...
Cuba is a good choice. Lots of good cruising. Check out Sailing Trio's channel. They've recently spent some time cruising southern Cuba
Would you mind writing an article on how to legally sail to Cuba please?
The deck looks amazing. You two did a great job on it. How many times can you sand it, if you ever have to (stain or gouge)?
A desk job Ryan or looking at Kelsey's legs I'd say great choice my man !!!
Kelsey if I had a boat I'd want someone like you to sail with me. Nice job on the top deck and good work below the water line too. You are one hard worker.
Smooth sailing
Can you explain your teak process and sources?
Good knife work Kelsey and a very nice job you've done as well. I've watched several boat repair videos of owners replacing their wood decks with that new product but none of them mention what kind of lifespan is expected from them ... any info on that ?
Thanks and continued good luck ;)
great job with the deck you have become quite a master of it, just one thing Kelsey I just wish u would cut away from yourself.
Was that a Reckmann furl I saw? Don't you dare sell that boat!! And to echo earlier comments, I offer a long standing boatyard motto- Always cut towards a friend. Nice work on the deck guys, you made a lot of money on that project.
Kelsey is always working harder than Ryan.
Robert Peterman yes, it's getting harder and harder to watch her do all of the work..
Yeah, Ryan probably spends more time getting his hair right than he does working on the boat.
C'mon Ryan, prove us wrong.
@@armick57 dont forget that editing videos, a huge income for them, is alot of work too. its far more entertaining and watchable watching kelsey do boat work than it is watching ryan edit videos. i think this is something people often forget.
Yes, I also noticed THAT......!!!
Shouldn’t have to keep pumping, once you created the vacuum and the oil flows, just stand back. Must have been an air leak.
Kong Toy!
I could not figure out what changed either. I would like hear all about the check in and out process in Cuda as I will be there this Nov or Dec.
I am particularly interested in what the US government would attempt to accuse of if you have your passport stamped in Cuba.
HI can you show us step by step how you made the "teak deck"?
Miss your videos. I’m betting you’re missing old Luci
Great Video! I've always wanted to see Marco Island but I was usually always in a time crunch between Bradenton and Miami. Do me a favor when you're in Cuba: Have a Cuban Sandwich and tell us how it is! :D
Saw on the Cruisers net you are selling your boat and have already bought another one - what did you get? Really wanted to go smaller?
A question just entered my head while watching this EP. How do you keep clothes clean?
AmanOU2be - perhaps they only wear them while shooting video for public consumption?
@@NorbCat
1) Wash it in saltwater in order to get salt crystals out of the clothing.
2) Wash it with fresh wather in order to get the salt part of salt water out of the clothing
3) Wash it with fresh water and *biodegradeable* soap.
4) Rinse the clothing in fresh water
All the used(=gray) water is thrown overboard when it had been used. Biodegradable soap in the sea/icean isn't a problem, becasue it's destroyed by bacteria/plants.
However, one is only allowed to dump black (and gray) water when one is 3 nautical miles off US coast line.
Great job on the video and cockpit! We loved Cuba and are sure you will too! 🌬⛵️🇨🇺🐾
Maybe one day you will have a chance to cruise Alaska. It's an incredible region to cruise. We have been cruising from the Seattle to Alaska over the last 25 years. It can be big city busy, or very remote. Last summer we spent cruising Haida Gwaii, a group of 150 islands, covering 4,000 square miles, 70 miles off the northern British Columbia coast. In 7 weeks we saw 4 other cruising boats.
Great job on the teak decks. We are glad to see you turn the corner and leave the yard on head off over the horizon.
Jim and Rosy
M/V Sea Venture
Another great episode! Things I love about you guys:
1) very little if any alcohol
2) honesty
3) everything else!
I love that you guys are following your dreams and experiencing life to its fullest. Very few people can say that they have done that! Keep moving forward.
Looking good, guys. Hey, can you tell us something about the charge controller or monitor that you showed at 10:40?
Well done on your new teak decking! Wow what a project That was! Your attention to detail has really paid off because it looks so good. You kids are still in your twenties? Good God you've accomplished so much for your age and you've got your whole life ahead of you now to go have fun!!!!! Thanks for sharing your journey with us.
Please , always point the blade away from your body. One slip of that box cutter and there would be no Cuba ,no dry Tortugas ,only a trip to the emergency room. Good luck
I would like to hear more about what the process was to get ready to go to Cuba?
Eggs and Chicken with honey
Ryan and Kelsey, you guys are an inspiration. I really appreciate the fact you aren't afraid to share your journey of discovery with us as you figure out what it takes to sail full time. I smile at the comments made by some of the others on here who criticize the way or order you do things. Everyone has their own way of learning/doing and I feel like you guys are doing just fine. You'll get it all figured out in time and I'll be happy to follow right along with you. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to seeing the trip to Cuba (also on our radar screen some day).
Hey Mike, really appreciate the kind words and support. We smile at a lot of the comments too :) Do you guys currently own a boat or is Cuba a top destination once you get on the water? Cheers and thanks for joining the crew. Means more than I can tell you to the both of us!
I just purchased a re-manufactured 1987 Rhodes 22. Will be taking delivery in a couple weeks. The goal is to learn on it, sailing local lakes then some multi-week trips on her to Cuba and possibly the Bahamas. We'll spend a few years learning the lines (yup, follow them too), then onto something truly blue water worthy for our own adventure around the world. If you're interested I'll send a photo of the Emma B when I get her. Exciting times! Fair winds my friends.
Please do! And hell yea - love the plan. I commend you for planning to take her to Cuba. A lot of people would say she isn't capable of it but in reality, most boats are capable its the owners who lack the fortitude. Wouldn't go any further than Bahamas or Cuba with a displacement of 2000lbs though, as you know :)
Just little advice if permitted. Try and keep cardboard as little as possible on the boat. Cockroach is a pest on a boat. We try to buy plastics , which have another problem.
12:40, what do those people do and how can i do it?
Dry Tortuga is awesome you will love it. It is really neat because you are totally cut off of communications. Time to relax and enjoy the beautiful water.

2 words---Captain Ron
Do you have a Oil Pre-Lube system on your engine?
We read in class that nearly 90% of engine wear takes place during dry start-ups.
A prelube system runs around $600 Dollars US....
being at slip and at anchor is not the why you buy a sail boat....unless you dock her in a lake. but your the captain my man.
Thank you so much for your financial transparency. It has been a huge help to me. The decision is made, we are going for it but now I can sleep at night knowing what its costing to do it. Thank you so much. Wicked Salty showed me I want to do it, Sailing Uma showed me I could do it, and you guys showed me I can afford it. Now all i need is some branding. You guys rock, my son and I will be watching...
Uma showed us we could do it as well :) Happy to hear the $'s help!! Our #1 piece of advice is the same for everyone looking to pursue any great adventure. Keep dreaming big, go as small as humanly possible and start actively pursuing the dream now. Cheers Creighton! Keep us posted on how its moving along :)
I have some land in Montana, but you can't have it until you finish your cruising videos! I kinda have the same dreams as you two, but did it in reverse order. I got the land first, built a "shack", then bought a sailboat. Wife loves the land, dislikes the boat, so......... I wish you two the best. Keep vlogging!!!!
now how many man hours into deck?
A lot of us are excited for your next adventure and we know you are as well!
The deck looks awesome! Well done!
Keep it a secret that you REALLY know how to lay a synthetic teak deck...........that isn't the reason you want the phone to ring!
That's the truth. Seriously, no one can pay us enough to do it again!
PS - The folks from Alaska are living my dream too! Although I gota figure out a boat down south and a raw milk permaculture farm in Vermont!!
Dude, you're graying exponentially.
VERY IMPRESSED with what you've done with the deck and cockpit. WOW! I don't know that I could have done any better! BTW...Kelsey...PLEEEEASE find another way to cut that decking rather than holding it with a your hand 4:06 and cutting it toward yourself. Think about the worse thing that could happen! OUCH! DRIP..>DRIP..>DRIP!!! PEACE OUT! Ü
Where did you get the synthetic teak? Do you have a link?
P.s. i really like what you guys are doing.
Stick with it. You are about to be living rather than working.
She can be on my boat crew that woman is awesome:) 41454 that is:) I might use old school gray and nonskid finish with anchor or such
Deck, Deck and more decking... great job! Now go buy that SAFETY NET for Roo! As I said before, watch Follow the Boat which has a 'Salty' sure-footed Cat and what happened? Turned away their attention and "CAT OVERBOARD"! (Dogs, which I love sometimes more than humans are NOT as Sure-footed as cats, Be warned!)
OH, and one more notice... DOG OVERBOARD just happened the other day with SHAGGY SEAS ........DOG OVERBOARD!!!! Get my drift!! ruclips.net/video/sKNpK-rYBRE/видео.html
As always, great video! Good save on the "Beats a deskjob, depending on your view"! Lol
Just wanted to nail a FIRST! down... now to the video.
Edit: now that I've watched the video, the decking looks fantastic. The cutting with the razor blade was a bit dicey looking, but all's well that ends well. Can't wait to see y'all cruising.
How many spare water pump impellers and gasket do you have ? I would also carry a spare engine coolant pump and gaskets. You should have a couple of spare pump belts. 5'-10' of various size/styles of hose and clamps. You also need a couple of rolls of self-amalgamating tape, silicon dielectric grease, gaskets/diaphragm for your outboard carburetor and fuel pump, spray carburetor cleaner and a other spray lubricants (silicon spray and Fluid Film).
Great job on the deck Kelsey, you persevered and it looks fab. Happy days now you are afloat and safe passage onwards. Andy UK SY Corrival Rival 32
Lovely boat you have there :) Thanks for the support!
Amazing job on the deck work. What's more amazing is how you didn't cut an artery or amputate a finger the way you wield that knife 4:03 - 4:11. In the words of Mad Eye Moody, "Constant Vigilance," for your safety. I don't mean to lecture but you are on a boat at anchor near a marina, add another 20 minutes to your trip too the hospital, assuming the dinghy is in the water. Now let's talk about offshore...
The deck job looks really labor intensive but what is the life expectancy of real wood vs synthetic? When would you realistically expect to have to do the deck again on Lucidity? Really enjoying the videos and can't wait to get caught up in real time. Greetings from Eagle River, AK!
I HATE synthetic teak solely from watching you go through this painfully tedious process. Kelsey is doing a FANTASTIC job! I bet it's not as easy as you make it look to have such a beautiful end product.
If you ever really have 30 feet of scope you can expect to drag in a Blow..
You guys be careful in Cuba.
... cuba cool, premier scuba diving thankfully the water are in great condition
Jardines de la Reina ... is a must
best of all .... no walmart, kfc, pizza hut, burger king etc.
As a 56 year old woodworker please please please listen to the other comments about razer or knife blade, please I'm someone who has cut himself and learned those lessons hard. razor blade Cuts don't clot well. Stitches are expensive and painful please. If we didn't care we wouldn't be making such a stink. Please take our comments from a place of caring and love and not being haters.
The bigger Ryan's hair gets the better the channel gets!
I kid, I kid... love the channel! Safe travels!
