    • 14] We Got Stuck at a ...
    After hearing horror stories for the duration of our stay on the hard about exiting this canal system in the late winter/spring with a deep draft, we were undoubtedly relieved once the hook was set and we were outside the canal system for good. From our anchorage in Charlotte Harbor, we are awaiting our weather window to head 'south'. No concrete plans, just destinations. And we'll be finishing up projects all along the way. Oh, the joys of boat ownership :)

    More piloting tips: You can set your mast, bow, stern or several point/s of your boat up on any land or sky POV from a star to a point of land or cloud (keep in mind that clouds move). Always check your compass heading at least every 15 minutes and adjust as necessary. ALSO use the sun, shadows (if a shadow moves you are off course), wind on your face and waves (motion and sound/s of your boat etc). When tuned into your boat at sea you will even wake up out of a deep sleep if/when anything changes (the sound of waves hitting the boat to a change in direction etc... ALWAYS be looking around 360. That is your real job when on duty, not reading a book or burried in electronics. Scan your electronics and set all alarms properly. There ya go o----)
    PS: Trust your boat yard workers. They know where to place the straps etc because they do it all day every day so don't worry, they have you covered 99.9999% of the time (accidents do happen but not often at any pro yard).

    The good news - Happy to see you back in the water ! The bad news - That single battery switch will cause you some day to not have enough battery power to start your engine. Accidentally leaving that switch on ALL, your house power draw will pull from ALL your batteries ! That single battery switch probably doesn't have a Alternator Field disconnect incorporated in it. That momentary switching from 1 or 2 to all or switching from any position to another position while the engine is running and while the alternator is charging might never bite you but it has happened. It will eventually degrade and/or ruin the voltage regulator in the Alternator. It usually blows out the diodes, they can't handle the voltage and amps coming in to them from the wrong direction because as your switching, the alternator output has no where to go and it overloads the voltage regulator.. The switching and the voltage/amp draw from the starter also disrupts your electronics and could damage them. One way to solve this is with three (3) simple on-off switches and a BATTERY COMBINER RELAY, this relay is the key. 1) switch - Engine 2) switch - House 3) switch - parallel (combine) both battery banks in an emergency. The battery combiner relay will handle the charging duties and read when a bank is charged and disconnect it to charge the other bank and the charging device will reduce its charge to that bank as it becomes fully charged. When no charging is present it disconnects both banks from each other. Your solar charger is connected to your house bank I assume (there's that word) and as your house bank is charging once it reaches a fully charged voltage the battery combiner relay will combine both banks to be charged. As you start using power for the house the house batteries will start to drop voltage and the relay will disconnect the engine battery. The Blue Seas brand has awesome combiner relays, they also sell a combo package that is a relay and a single switch that duplicates the three separate switches, just turn it to on and your done. I like the three separate switches manly so, if I'm not running the engine there is not reason to have power going to it. Watch Sailing Britican's latest video when they have a worn hose getting the starter and the starter relays wet and the engine is starting itself. The relay also has a terminal to connect to an indicator light to let you know when batteries are combined, Whoa....that's a mouthful. And yes, I drained both banks ONCE, just a click from the starter, got a jump start and motorsailed back in, Fun Day on Lake Erie ! Fair Winds

    Advice from old sailor: don't downsize without spending a couple of days and nights on the size boat your looking to downsize to. Your on a thirty five, which is really about the smallest boat you can be comfortable living on, especially bunk size for two people. A smaller boat will add stress to your relationship.

      I was going to post how "go small go now" is better. However, I agree with you 100 %! Cruising on my 28 foot sailboat with my girlfriend does get stressful. I Think a 35 foot boat may be to much boat to start out with but I don't know. I also think that one you OWN a boat, thinking about buying other boats is like a married man or women looking at other people. Be happy with and love the boat you have!!

    What an awesome day... finally back in the water. Just an FYI, mosquito nets work best if you put them over a hat with even a small brim all around to keep it off your face. When the net is against your skin those little buggers aren't stopped at all. But... Oh Happy Day.

    Don't forget to polish your fuel before heading offshore. Sitting in the tank for months it will grow microbes and gunk in the bottom which won't get in your fuel line until you stir it up, as in a seaway. We learned that lesson the hard way.

      +David Wade My favorite bug net is a really inexpensive one my wife got that is supposed to go over a large beach umbrella. It has a ring of plastic around the base that you are supposed to fill with water for weight, but just the empty plastic ring is plenty of weight. The breeze goes right through it, so it wont likely blow away.

Personally I would stick with it for a while and see how it goes, it will always have a market if you decide to sell but boats like yours with owners like Jim don't come along that often and it feels like so much part of your story and meant to be. (Back-up navigation) and so much more..Ryan is right (5 hrs ago) I love my simple Garmin csx . Hardwired just inside the companionway (so its velcro attached to a mount out at the wheel). Never needs batteries. bought the patch cord. My routes with the waypoints are entered into the csx and it talks to my autopilot. So it takes leeway into consideration, I'm always on my Rumline. Within 200 feet of next waypoint it rings. I push a button twice and it switches course to new waypoint. Never hand steer or watch course. Drink coffee on fordeck ( singlehanded) and watch for uncharted logs (PACIFIC NORTHWEST). Anchor drag alarm ..Extremely strong reception. Color daylight readable screen. Charts for anywhere can be popped in. MJ sailing has a cat rather than a dog, my mistake. Wonderful cat . G.T. S/V Silver Fantasy

  • @CheersWarren
    @CheersWarren 6 лет назад

    Hi good old salt wisdom, if you don't mind me adding a small addition to the advise, if you are coastal cruising in an area across a current and trying to steer a compass course by ' only' steering towards a fixed point on the land the current will make your course actually curve and you won't stay on the same compass heading. So periodically you will have to pick a new shore point if you want to stay on the same compass course.
    Now we have GPS/chartplotters etc this is less likely to happen but if you are going 'no power' old school you could get caught out especially if it's a narrow channel.
    Looks like you are having a blast , cheers Warren Ps you probably know all this.....
