- We won't be trailering our new boat more than 4-5 times over the lifetime of us owning her but the trailer still desperately needed some repair to make its maiden voyage. Total cost for all new parts for the trailer came in just under $2,000.
Next episode we'll go in-depth on the costs of our new English girl and we will also do a tour of her. We'll eventually be sharing the history of her build as we tracked down the original builder and found out some pretty incredible details on our new home. Stoked to share more with you all!

A lot of people have commented on our most recent episode noticing how mad some people are in the comments about our decision to downsize. Here's how we feel about it :)

Abandon Comfort just do what makes you happy.
getting there. doing it.
Abandon Comfort Your Dad is a stud.
I am only mad because you did not tie a head rope off to either of your ladders risking a trip to the hospital. From a professional ladder climber
Just saw the last 3 videos. Stumbled upon them by accident. Awesome, I'll probably never get to go to sea again but you bring back a flood of all the memories. You did right, she is beautiful and if you take care of her she'll take care of you. I had no idea you were in the Coast Guard. I got out in 1971. My first duty after boot camp was the USCGC Cahoone, one of the last "buck and a quarters", built in the 1930s to chase rum runners. Sleek and very fast, still had her original teak decks, engine room telegraph and 120 mm deck gun. I was one of the cooks and she still had her oil burner cook stove that looked like a wood stove and would, if the vent funnel went wrong, fill the mess lounge with smoke. Have great fun and a great life. God bless those that go down to the sea in ships and do business on the great waters.
People into true blue water boats know what an exceptional find this capable boat is. Truly a go-anywhere boat which is more than capable for circumnavigation. So excited for you guys!
Just don't expect to bring much food and water with you...
I wound never ever think of looking at a 22 footer until i saw this WOW the most beautiful boat I've ever seen
And like the color of your yacht above the water line, I'm green, green with envy. That is one very pretty yacht you've found, I'm so happy for you and happy you've decided to share the experience with others here on RUclips.
All the best Pete.
You’ve Guys found a little gem! Fair winds and enjoy!!!
I love the old world charm of this boat. I don't see it as a live aboard being so small. Not for me to say though. Happy trails.
Such a lovely boat, please keep it as original as possible!
Just binge watched all your episodes after stumbling across #42 in 24 hrs. This might be worse than waiting for GoT. More please. Thanks.
Keyport is just down the highway from my Mom's house. Congrats on the new home and thanks for making me homesick for NJ.
Reminded me of moving my Catalina 25 with a full keel from Kansas to Kentucky. Had to get new axles, brakes and tires before I could bring it back. Bit of job. It was a crazy trailer, heck of a drive cross country, what memories. Backed it into my driveway and started a new journey that I could little imagine I would ever be on. That was July 06, I spent the next year taking care of my wife of 17 years as she struggle with cancer, She fought everyday to live, fighting a loosing battle. When I couldn't take any more I would go outside and and work on lil "Surprise" as she would later be known, to recharge and clear my head, (always had the intercom with me) then back inside to take care of her. She passed away on 25 July 07, some of her last words to me were to buy the boat I wanted, "do it you'll be happy"... I sold lil Surprise and on 17 November that year I put my Catalina 42 Mk II in the water named her Surprise as well... So one day when I cant sail anymore I hope to sell her to a couple like you two that have a heart and respect for a boat. So dear ole Surprise can continue her journey of creating happy memories.
I moved slowly from a Spindrift 22 to Lil Surprise then to Big Surprise, and while I really enjoy sailing Surprise off Shore (keep her on the Gulf Coast now) I will never forget the pure joy feel of sailing my smaller boats defiantly a lot to be said for going small living off the grid living simple. Its easy, pure simple way of life using little giving back more.
So, keep on living "YOUR" dream enjoying the moments you have together making memories that you two will have forever and never forget. Its awesome that you allow us into a part of your world and share with us and try to inspire us to live life to the fullest and forget, even if for a moment, all the pressures of modern life. I love the excitement you have. Keep moving forward boldly.
I had a 34” for years but this 22’ is a small battle ship , fix it up real good and enjoy it !
WOW guys! This is awesome! I was smiling the whole time watching. So happy for you both getting this thing. I cannot wait to see the refit. I just hate that it might run into the winter months, hope not, but I guess that depends on how much work she needs.
So stoked to see how you guys make her your own. Killer find.
Beautiful boat for two beautiful people.
GOD BLESS YOU and your days to come.
I’m stunned you did this, completely off the rails with opening up a can of worms. Attempting this requires a large pocket book and tons of time. Hope you enjoy it, but I can’t help but think this is a cop-out to real sailing. Best wishes.
They have no jobs and a Patreon account, both bases covered.
Just another emo couple out for some patreon money. Like "salt and tar" probably not open to advice from people who actually know what they're doing. They've got it figured out.
I've watched your entire series over the past couple of weeks, love your attitudes, and you don't have to justify any decision to anyone but yourselves. If going small footprint and eco-friendly is your goal, then more power to you both. I'm on a completely different wavelength (looking at the Beneteau 473 for US West Coast sailing and perhaps someday over to Hawaii and beyond) but appreciate your steadfast vision for living the life you want to live.
All the best guys, she's a beauty. May she give you many hours of happy sailing!
This is gold.
The excitement in both of your voices is palpable. I haven't been following closely but was around for the search of the first boat and then took some time off. I'm just now joining you guys again on your journey. I'm excited for you both and your plans that you've laid out. Huzzah!!
She is lovely guys!
Okay... I am in love with this boat! What an awesome find!
Yup, hauling your boat to your backyard so that you can work on it rent and hassle free is something that is envious. She is a beauty!
This quote crossed my path today and I thought of you guys.
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Mark Hazelden that’s a great quote!!
Nice boat, and I'm happy for you both. But I can't help but point out the irony. You downsized partly to eliminate the diesel, and go electric. But the very first thing you have to do is hook up to a 1 tonne that has a diesel that dwarfs the one in your old boat. And you will have to every time you want to trailer the boat to a new location.
I'm not wanting to squash your dream, just want you to be real with the actualities of it.
Fair winds and following seas
@Nonya Bizness Exactly, in crazy liberal virtual signaling fashion it is not about solving the pollution problem. Its about looky looky were better than you.
Congrats on your new amphibious tiny house! The new axles look awesome. Nice job getting the trailer roadworthy again. Definitely keep those supports for the tarps that covered the boat. My trailer sailor didn't come with those, so I had to make a set. I call it the sun-shade and I put it up whenever I am going to be anchored somewhere for a while or when the boat is going to be on the trailer for a while. I put a tarp over it and the frame keeps the tarp a few feet off the deck. Its high enough so I can crawl around on deck when I need to go forward for any reason. There is a tarp that goes over the deck forward of the mast and another that drapes over the boom and shades the back part of the cabin and cockpit. It keeps the deck in the shade in summer which is when I use the boat most. Without the sunshade it gets terribly hot inside the cabin. With the sunshade on and hatches open the cabin stays a lot cooler. I keep the bow and stern ends open so the breeze blows through under the tarp. I also cut some plywood to fit over the open deck hatches and modified table top fans to fit in a hole cut in the plywood hatch cover. With the deck in the shade and fans blowing fresh air through the cabin, the interior stays comfortably cool even when anchored in the Florida summer sun. It would be impossible to stay inside the cabin for any length of time without the sunshade and fan. Its also really nice when it rains because I can sit in the cockpit and look around without being directly in the rain.
What a great episode!
That's a pretty boat
Lovely boat, but way too small for two people and a dog. Very little deck and cabin space. The cabin is claustrophobic.
Hey AC-Just caught up to your adventure. Whew! You two are doing an amazing job on detailing your trip through the sailing and adventuring life. The decisions you are making are well thought out and well made. In the end the only people you need to justify anything to are yourselves. I don't know if you have read any of the Pardeys' books about their sailing life, but they spent a great deal of time on a 24' Bristol channel cutter design (about 11 years cruising around the world if I remember correctly). They are a great resource of practical information on small boat cruising as well as a great read. Wish you the best and am looking forward to seeing more of your continuing adventure. Bless you both.
Thanks, Matt! Self-sufficient sailor & omick.net changed everything for us. Excited to share more with you!
Love your excitement for this new chapter! I’ve definitely developed bit of a bigger is better mentality but props to you for doing your thing. She’s a classic passage maker and looks awesome.
What a cool nite tonight. ABANDON COMFORT episode. RAN SAILING episode. SAILING FAMILY episode
Wish I had a beer and fish and chips. Best wishes on your boat! Ahhhh I can’t wait till Sunday then a SAIL LIFE episodes . Gonna dream great tonight with all this footage . Soon soon my boat on the water.
Blows my mind how many people just don't get it. It is not your dream it is not your adventure. You either support and enjoy or shut up and move on. What I don't understand is that sailors live a life of constant change, every day sometimes every hour means change....Yet people who subscribe complain about change. Boggles my mind??!!
My wife and I talked about purchasing a sail boat 20 years ago. Life kinda got in the way or should I say two kids. The adventure changed from sailing to Parenthood. Life's little blessings. After binge watching your adventure we have decided to save up and plan our next adventure. It seems our dream never died it just took a nap. You have awakened the dream for us and we plan on making it one to remember. Thanks for your videos.
So awesome to hear! Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if we can help in any way with making the dream a reality. Stoked for you guys!
Don't give up the dream! We have 3 kids and after dreaming of sailing with them we finally bought a small boat (28ft) and we've been cruising the Baltic Sea for 5 weeks now. Another month to go till school calls.
You can do it! Don't give up on the dream!
Kevin W Just don't buy a boat anchor like this. If you want to trailer consider a Merit 25 or McGregor 26S. Two extremes of the same concept. About $6K boats with trailors. If you plan to moor, ~30' is where things start getting interesting. I have spent a lot of time on 36' with up to 7 people. It could provision 10 days for 2 people.
Edit: If you have a big budget, look at Seaward 26RK, that's what these 2 should have done if they want the most complete boat on a trailor. I have no experience with them.
You might want a tabernacle for the mast if you plan on sailing up rivers and canals.
By the way new boat looks amazing!
I have solved the riddle about which many have pondered. Ryan, I can completely understand why you wanted to downsize from 35 feet to 22 feet. With the utmost respect, I would not want to get farther than 22 feet away from Kelsey either.
haha nice one!
Hahahaha
Good luck guys with the new boat. I'm already in love with "Jaqueline" and I'm going to accompany them here from Brazil. If you ever visit my country, please let us know. Let's prepare a Brazilian party.
"Bons Ventos amigos"
I am on my 3rd Jeep, mostly had old MGs Before...
Love mt TJs but started with a 1994 YJ, then a 2006 ( last year of the). TJ
And Now have a 1997 (first year of the) TJ, all have had the 4.0 straight six.
Love ❤️ your Sea going Log Cabin...!! “Beautiful”. 😱 Lazerth.. I Like it 😎✅
i remember Kelsey from Jr and high school ( Good times !!!! )
That boat is beautiful for it's age and for sitting for so long with no love.
It's a beautiful boat, something about the 18 to 24 foot trailerable sailboats that are blue water capable are very appealing , when we had are Dana 24 in the water at Key West City Marina, we had more people stop by and compliment the boat and several people wanted to purchase her no matter what the price was, she is back on the trailer and in central Florida until after hurricane season.
I don't get all the fuss folks are making over this. The FC 22 is a beautiful pocket cruiser. It can do bluewater but it'll be challenging. I was sad to see the Hallberg Rassy go, she would have been my choice but this isn't my life. As I'm sitting on my couch these two are out making their dreams a reality.
Be safe and enjoy your new adventure.
Thank you for your awareness and understanding.
Congrats! We'll be watching the refit! Love the 'Resizing' idea!
That is a sweet boat Im hooked 🚣⚓
good looking ship
It will be great to learn about this boat, the adventure begins, again. Enjoy your channel.
The bottom paint arrow is a forward marker for a travel lift sling. Look where it lines up with the leading edge of the keel.
floathi I could see this. Seems quite permanent though when a sling marker works just as well. And the previous owner used to launch her straight of the trailer. Sling marker, bad paint job - who knows!
Yeah that's clearly a beer marker. Before you start sanding to repaint you strategically place an ice cold beer on deck just above that mark to remind you when you hit it to stop and drink before both you and the beer get too hot to function properly.
Luuuv those teak decks baby! Get Some!
brimstone33 😆
It launches from a trailer!
That was my thought, it's either center of gravity, mass, pivot point of keel or sling mark. Hard to believe just a mistake. Was it not on both sides.?
Slow, small, won't sail upwind, won't back up straight, but my god, I love that design! Reminds me of Slocum. I always lusted for a boat that "salty".
Hope you got the rudder too.
Looks great, Ive owned and sailed on several yachts, from 50' to 23' most of them were keel boats that stay in the water but the most favorite was a 23' trailer-able yacht that I kept in the back yard. No mooring or slipping fees , easy access to my workshop and when sailing I could pull up onto a beach or anchor in shallow water, no stress. It sailed almost as fast as larger boats but was a breeze to handle. On one occasion sailing down the east coast of Australia a series of severe storms blocked my passage so I simply retreated into the nearest port, caught a train to my car and trailer and within a day was heading down the Highway with boat in tow at 60mph. Everyone else was holed up for the next few weeks. I 'll be interested to see how you guys go.
Rod Hinds but I would be scared to death to circumnavigate and get caught in a storm with 30' waves. I have moved up to a 40' and still want more room for food, supplies, tools and extra backup parts. I would go crazy spending months in a boat that small with 2 people and a dog? I am not putting down anyone but it blows my mind to want to navigate an ocean crossing on a 22' boat.
I was giving some thought to your downsized boat- First of all, if there is such a thing as boat jewels, you have found one. True works of art. As far as your decisions about what size of boat to cross oceans in, it makes me wonder what open water experience you have had so that you can tune your judgement accordingly. Good thing is that you are all young enough that it is just part of the road traveled. It reminds me a bit of choosing what sidearm to carry in Alaska brown bear country. I had all kinds of opinions- my own and others. However, non of that was nearly as instructive as one particular bear encounter. I ended up with a 454 Casull. At any rate, love your boat, just could never fit all my sailor stuff in one like that.
i have a 22ft falmouth oyster dredger that i have sailed across the atlantic 4 times from england superb sea boats.
What a pretty sea boat, lots of love and craftmanship went into that boat, what a find. Well done, your did you homework well. Can't wait to see her in action. Congratulations!
Relax people. We just got back from sailing 10 days in the Pacific with my family of SIX on a 26 footer. They can do whatever they want to do.
Great video it fantastic that your dad is helping you
Welcome to the small boat club you guys!!!
Loved this! We're having the same troubles with our Flicka's trailer. Learning as we go as well! Man, watching your boat pull out on the highway made our hearts skip a beat. We're sooo not there yet with our trailer.
We should totally chat about your refit! We're in the middle of ours as well and would love to know what you guys are working on. Our Flicka hasn't been in the water in over 20 years. Cheers to small boat sailing in these classic beauties.
congrats! God bless you. what a way to start the day with a AC vid!
ghostman76015 thanks for following along!!
Nice day sailer!
A little tip if you're going to pull anything on a trailer. Check the height before you leave. 13'6" is the max. You shouldn't feel relief when it fits through the toll both.
Best of luck from a retired Coastie who sails an Alberg 30 (for the last 27 years). Have met the Pardeys several times. You should read all their books; they are the Lyle Hess experts. And Don Casey's Allied Seawind was a small 30 footer (like mine, it is only a bit longer on the waterline than your boat. The Casey's spent six months afloat, six ashore. The Pardey's wintered ashore when they had the 24' Seraffyn. The reality is that a lot of cruisers in big boats spend time ashore, too, if they have the money (and the home base).Enjoy!
Through the EZ pass lane today and across the Pacific tomorrow!
Learning the Lines haha definitely not tomorrow but hopefully someday!
Dad is so dad-looking & acting-- someone from central casting if I didn't know better.
That boatyard may have been intended as her last stop but the previous owner did right by her when he put her up. A custom fitted canvas cover And a heavy tarp over all. He must have hoped someone would take her out someday. The condition she's in is seriously impressive. Once you refit and upgrade she could take you anywhere in the world. What a find.
Patraic yea the previous owner did a great job of keeping her out of the elements. Despite the fact that it was in an abandoned boat yard, she’s been kept well. We’re excited to get her back on the water!
Any other interesting boats in that Yard?
LOVE LOVE LOVE this boat! Looks like the perfect craft for you. Congrats! (And Semper Paratus)
NOOOO!!!!! Why?? I was looking forward to following your adventures and so jealous. I am a firm believer in allowing everyone in the world to make their own decisions, so I truly wish you the best in your adventures and doing what makes you guys happy. Your decision is yours alone and we all couldn't possibly begin to understand why you did what you did. But unfortunately from the channel side, I subscribed to see your adventures, and how she sails in different weather and sea conditions, not another refit of another boat. I am a Yacht Captain and basically just maintain shit all day long. I was super excited about your adventures as my Wife and I are buying a boat like Lucy in July 2020 to move onto like you did. This felt like the end of the last episode of Game Of Thrones, and now I have to wait years to see more :( All the best with the new project!
I can see a few people are 'disappointed' with your choice to take on an old boat. That said, it is your lives, your choices, and your challenge.
She is an absolutely stunningly beautiful boat. Get her fixed up, sail her where ever your fancy takes you and enjoy yourselves......
Of course, if you decide she is not for you then feel free to sail her to Plymouth, England and I will happily swap her for my little Foxcub 18.......
Your new boat is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Such a classic design and look. I am so excited for you kids and this new adventure. Watching the refit will be a fun experience for all of us armchair sailors. What is your time line on this anyway?
Nice motorsailboat. Hi from Norway.
So, You gonna tow the new boat with your Prius?
They stopped at the drugstore and got extra batteries as well
Those electric motors are torque monsters.
Betcha the Prius can get it going. Stopping it, on the otherhand...
That's a beautiful boat
Family is the best! Good call on R&R the axles.
Welcome to a lifetime of sanding, epoxying and varnishing those topsides! Looks pretty, though.
What else does someone have to do when living on a tiny sailboat? They won't be jogging laps around the decks.
Was looking forward to sailing content. Waited while you overhauled a nice boat, lots of hard work and was ready to set sail with ya. But this makes no sense!! Think this channel needs to be a boat refitting channel. Looks like the truck is bigger than the boat. You could have just put a sail on a canoe and put an enclosure on it.
Pretty exciting, looking forward to the refit.
That is an odd looking boat, but I’m sure I’ll grow to love her as you do. Looking forward to the journey. Cheers!
Wow it's a beautiful boat, best of luck with it and I'm looking forward to future episodes with it 😃👍
Wow that's fabulous. Don't forget to hose the running gear on the trailer with fresh water thoroughly . But I know you knew that LOL Cheers !
Hey Ryan, I can't tell you how lucky you are to have such a great father. Enjoy him while you can. I never had that kind of relationship with my dad unfortunately. Amazingly you have the very boat that I would love to own! You are absolutely right, "A diamond in the rough" but she doesn't look all that rough! What a great boat! I am so jealous of the two of you. I can't wait till you guys start the re-fit videos this is gonna be awsome! Maybe you should think about two videos a week! (please please please!) You guys are one lucky couple! Good Luck!
So eager to see how she looks inside? What are the refit plans? Good luck on your new adventure! Keen on seeing what you guys do with her! 😄
I like how you two live in freedom and make choises, unexpected to some, following your dreams. That's what makes you interesting and distinguish yourself from yet another Sailing Channel. You are you! With a dog.
You are different, that is what spices! There is to strong an urge in people to be all the same these days. It scares me. I call out for everybody to speak up for them selves and listen to each other in stead of judging each other. Go live to their own likings in freedom and respect the environment.
That boat, in my opinion looks great with a wooden mast. Please don't put on aluminum.. ;,) It is a classical boat. Wouldn't be aluminum heavier than wood? How much led is in there? Are you going to put batteries beneath the diesel engine or is it all going to be electric? Excited to see where this goes. Uma is electric, you in touch with them?
Btw that triangle marking on the hull, isn't that where the crane should lift the boat. E.g. strongest point/balanced points of the boat?!
Goodluck and enjoy live in freedom!
Ps I forgot, i once mentioned how lucky you were in buying that HR back then for that much... Retrospective, it did cost a lot of time and money. Personally I would feel more satisfied putting that much of resources in a (more)classical boat than in a HR I imagine. Thumbs up!
WOW!!!! ....you two are awesome.....with love from texas....
That is a really nice custom trailer. With those new sweet axles you have something there. Might need a little descaling and paint, but the worst of the work has been done it seems. Should be up to crossing continents without a sweat. Now you need to get yourselves an old classic diesel truck or maybe a 3/4-ton panel van for a hauler and land-home ;)
Looks to me that the triangle of bottom paint is about where the stand falls on the trailer. I'd at least put a sticker or new topside paint there to help with recovery when hauling out.
Does the boat have a windvane self-steering system? Hard to tell with the mast, rudder, and sprit off of the boat. She looks even more tiny and compact without all that rigged.
You rescued this boat just in time. Looks like she is not far gone at all yet. Solid boat, should not be too much to bring it back into Bristol shape, plus all the modern safety gear fitted. The hull looks very nice snd shiny.
Bravo Zulu on a treasure hunt well done.
I'm just finding it difficult to understand why you would go to a boat half the size of your other one.
Because they think they know better with all their vast experience.
You can use it as a tiny house as you travel the country by road! :)
Pretty awesome! This gal will be spending most of her time with us on the water though :) We'll be doing meet-ups on our way back south so Patrons will be able to come see her before she hits the water again!
Awesome! You definitely have to stop in MD!
free stay 10 min outside DC if you dont mind sharing a house with my wife and baby for a few nights, we do have a big extra bedroom with its own bathroom, cheers
Great job guys , diy savings on that one
very kool boat, I'm so excited for you guys and look forward to following your journey
Yes. As we can see, people will roll the trailer into the sea and then not wash off the salt water with fresh.
Very cool boat.
I'm starting from the beginning. I know nothing about boats except we had a pontoon boat when I was a kid..lol!
Your first boat was nice but this one is really beautiful but does seem pretty small. Good luck tho!
TBH It's an ideal beginner size and that hull will forgive many mistakes. An accidental gybe on a 40 footer would give you a lot more to think about.
That triangle of paint likely marks a bulkhead for stands or trailering pads or it may mark where lift straps need to be placed if hauled out away from home port.
2k isn't too bad for the trailer repairs. I think i'm about 10-11k in to my trailer. I really don't want to add it all up since I'm pretty sure it is going to hurt my feelings
Motarded421 haha at least you have the awareness as to why you don’t add it all up 😆 we’re lucky we have Ryan’s brother who will do a lot of the welding for structural reinforcement for us.
I agree they got off easy on the trailer repairs. 2 heavy duty axles with brakes and 4 trailer tires/rims is a pretty minor repair in the overall scheme of things. A custom frame fitted to purpose is the most difficult, time-consuming, detail-specific and expensive part of sailboat trailer building from scratch.
With helpful family having knowledge of trailers, towing, and welding the job wasn't nearly as difficult as it might have been.
The trailer isssues, as easily fixed by Ryan's family, did probably help contribute in a small way to this boat being "available" in the first place. Had it been functional and safe to use this deal might not have happened the way it did. Te boat might have been moved long ago to a better location, or even sold to someone else had it been easy.
I finally got my boat moved the 300 miles to my house. Entire rig weighed in over 30k lbs
That paint triangle may be the Boat CG if there is one on the other side
Lk M sz
Very pretty boat!
Too few and far between in episodes once I caught up but content great and characters sympathetic. Well done guys and good luck with the beautiful olde gal.
This boat is way too big for you. After you get finished fixing it up, you need to sell it at a loss and buy a 12’ open boat.
To be completely honest, I cannot begin to understand the move to downsize from a Hallberg Rassy 35-2 to the FC-22 for cruising.
Issues plague the decision like the tiny LWL leading to slow hull speed and massive wetted area making it hard to reach hull speed. That boat needs so much SA/D (sail area) to push the bathtub hull in light air, it''ll easily easily be overpowered in 15 knts. How's the reefing set up? If you scrap the diesel for electric, where are you going to put the batteries and the solar panels? I'm searching for analogies that fit your decision... Try this: After an extended restoration of their perfect cruising boat, the young couple become disillusioned the the perfection of their boat and sell it. This is analogous to: Ryan and Kelsey hand-build an amazing carbon fiber road bike and enter the Tour De France. After the first leg, they become disillusioned with the carbon footprint of their new carbon bike, they trade it for a beautiful 1952 Raleigh touring bike because their keen on the way the fog light graces the granny bars and the way the fenders wrap the 36 mm tires. Should be a great Tour guys. Maybe when you all get tired of zero head room, zero elbow room, zero bedroom, and all the hobby-horsing with the 21 LWL hull, not to mention the overall inability to turn any speed, you can upgrade to a Hallberg Rassy in the mid 30 foot range. I hear they're excellent cruising boats.
They are young and afraid by the sea. They will learn that with a too small boat you have to abandon comfort, speed and safety. I would prefer to face 30 or 40 knots of wind with an hallberg rassy 352 than a FC-22 ! They never sailed more than 15 knots of wind.
penflo penflo - I struggle with the rationale of how they wrote off the HR before giving it a real chance. Your explanation makes sense.
They face the sea and it's challenges whereas you rely on a boat for protection. But have you tried man handling the HBR sail in 40knts I know when the SHTF I would choose the FC.
I was in 30knts the weekend before last on my 35 foot sloop. Bigger boats just mean bigger winches with more leverage and safety features like jiffy reefing lead aft to the cockpit making it so you need to man-handle a boat. You just need reef early and often. I've been in a storm with 75 knts of wind and you're correct sir, I'm 100% comfortable with relying on my boat for protection. I'm not afraid of it, I enjoy a storm from time to time.
Exactly more money, more problems, and if there is a failure it's unmanageable.
Sure in light winds or going windward your faster but as you stated, reefing early and often when conditions change it seems the heavy displacement straight tracking FC-22 will start to find its legs sail past to safety.
My camper van can travel by land and sea! Sure you need a ferry, but that is about the equivalent as a trailer, right? ;)
MikeHeu touché 🙃
Kodak moment if you ever take your trailer with the boat on a Ferry.
That axle though! I'm guessing the weld let some water in while it was sitting waiting for the tide to rise and never drained?
please no more mournful, self important, snowflake music....
I’m sorry guys. To me this ends your cruising realistically. Not saying she isn’t beautiful but regardless it’s just not practical but that’s just my opinion. You spent a lot of time and energy on a boat, and barely sailed it. No room for storage, solar, etc, etc, etc. I see this asa disaster for the channel.
T.J. Mills i predict quaint road trips to lakes they read about on Google with morning walks to the coffee house. I wonder if two people can step that mast?
So is Sailing more about repairs than actually sailing? I'm starting to understand! New channel name: Abandon Refits ;)
Abandon Patrons
No, actually "abandon sailing".

Glad it did, beautiful boat, nice story. New Sub, looking forward to following your adventure. 👍👍
