    The drain under the water line could cause a venturi effect. This means when water passes by the opening as you sail it causes a suction which will drain your deck faster. I'm a firefighter and we use it to spray foam this is just a hunch.

    • @maxiemassengale5853
      @maxiemassengale5853 7 лет назад +42

      I actually know very little about marine things but I am studying everything so my wife and I can liveaboard someday. I'm learning a lot from these guys as well. We all have different life experiences that teach us different things.

      Maxie Massengale great answer I was going to say the same thing they are going to wish it was below waterline if they take a large wave over the stern you need to get the water out quickly

    • @jcampbell3624
      @jcampbell3624 7 лет назад +23

      Just so you know its not actually the venturi effect. It does create a low pressure spot from the water passing by the opening though and will suck out the water. Put a straw in a cup of water and blow across the top, if you blow hard enough water will come out. Same principle. The venturi effect is when there is a constriction in diameter of a pipe or tube, and that's what creates the low pressure, and speeds up the flow velocity through the constriction.

    • @bensteel3944
      @bensteel3944 7 лет назад +7

      The same effect is used in sailing dingy drains to drain water from the boat. The faster you go the more water drains. You just have to make sure to close the drain when the boat slows or stops. The passing of water under the boat causes a vacuum and draws the water out.

    • @MauserM03Blog
      @MauserM03Blog 7 лет назад +10

      Maxie Massengale . The deck drain hose has a through-hull under the waterline to avoid unsightly stains on the hull. :-)

  • @jimmygrant3212
    @jimmygrant3212 6 лет назад +61

    Don't move a thru hull fitting if it doesn't leak. Don't fix it if it ain't broke.

      Jimmy Grant unless it's on a steel boat then remove it and weld it, oh after you take the boat out of water 😀😀 believe me I seen people remove the nut and hammer it out and sink, this is not a joke...

    • @airwolf61970
      @airwolf61970 6 лет назад +1

      I would advise them to pay special attention to all thru hull fittings.
      Especially the ones below waterline.

    • @SIC-SEMPER-TYRANNIS
      @SIC-SEMPER-TYRANNIS 5 лет назад +1

      I put them thru all the time. I'll drill a hole right in the bottom of the boat, and myself or my helper will go under and pop the fitting thru, to be tightened from either side. We coat each with 5200 marine adhesive sealant. Works like a charm every time for live well feed lines, and heat exchanger tubes.

    A trick with stuck filters, double up a piece of course (like 120 grit) sandpaper and wrap it around the filter under the wrench. Usually does wonders.

    Another good way to get a filter off is to get a good heavy duty screw driver and a hammer. You drive the screwdriver through the filter with the hammer. Then turn the filter with the screwdriver, and often that will do the trick when wrenches just cant get a grip!

    • @billflying2977
      @billflying2977 7 лет назад +5

      But DO NOT drive a screw driver thru the FUEL Filter!!!!!!! Boom with a spark!

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  7 лет назад +5

      Oh we tried this! Didn't want to bore you all with us using the hammer to pierce the filter. Surprisingly the only thing that moved it at all was heating it up. Had to be put in the vice!

    • @allynonderdonk7577
      @allynonderdonk7577 7 лет назад +17

      Diesel fuel doesn't do that generally...gasoline does. Diesel fuel takes quite a lot to light. That is why gasoline driven Sherman tanks would just blow up all the time versus the German diesel driven tanks during WWII. It takes a lot of heat to light diesel fuel. Then generally it just burns, no explosion. That is why boats have diesel heaters.

    Leave the cockpit drains where Hallberg-Rassy put them...they know what they're doing at that particular yacht building company. Pretty good engineers with significant experience.

    • @Coyotehello
      @Coyotehello 7 лет назад +38

      Bruce is correct. If you are thinking of changing/renovating/adding or removing anything you need to, at the very least, read the American Boat and Yacht Counsel Standards. Doing anything else can void your insurance, be denied a claim, endangered the boat or your life.
      If you do have an accident or have a claim the insurance company will send a guy like me to confirm the vessel was meeting the standards that is ABYC and USCG/CCG regulations etc.
      ABYC.org
      As for the heater, well it might seems curious but in the tropic especially during storms you use the heater to dry the humidity off the boat, unless you have an air conditioning 'reverse air' that does both cold and hot but they are expensive and fragile. what is that a Wallace, they are very nice quality units.

    Great video guys ;-) Personally I like having the scuppers exit along the boot stripe or just above. Still looks good and eliminates a hole below the waterline (I'd still have a shutoff valve though)..

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  7 лет назад +3

      Thanks for the insights, Andy!! We like the look of having the scuppers exit along the boot stripe - hides the holes a little more. We'll do more research and sometime in the next few months we'll probably move forward with moving some of the thru hulls up. Cheers!

    tip to remove stuck oil filters, large screwdriver and a hammer, punch the screwdriver through the filter and turn. This also helps to drain all the oil out of the old filter.

      Never pierce the oil filter.....you lose all the integrity it has and it just tears to metal shreds. Try to get the filter wrench next to the base before you start to turn, if it slips add a strip of rubber band or sandpaper for better grip. ALWAYS lube new gasket with NEW oil before installing.

      this won't help get your filter off until next time. don't tighten it with the filter wrench. only needs to be turned about 3/4 turn after gasket touches. should usually be able to get it off by hand the next time.

    Really enjoying your videos, you guys are definitely closing in on being the best sailing vlog. In fact, you may be there already. We have been on board full time for 8 years and it has always seemed to us that hardly anyone doing a vlog even comes close to showing the reality of how much work (and frequently cash) it takes to make it work. Please, please stay true to what you have produced so far. One question...can you name the marina where you are staying? We are considering spending the winter at a marina on the west side of Florida this year for something different and we would love to have a good option to consider. Thanks.

    Nice Torqueedo :)
    But..... The Cockpit Drains MUST end under the waterline. Otherwise you will got a serious problem while heeling. Than the Cockpit will NOT drain.

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  7 лет назад +5

      Thanks :) We wish we could have all of our engines be electric on board but our Yanmar is virtually brand new so it'd be dumb for us to replace it. So the drains are deck drains (scuppers) not cockpit drains. Cockpit drains will stay below the waterline. My question would be if this still matters? I'm thinking it wouldn't be a big issue but I really don't know too much about this. Let me know what you guys think. - Ryan

    • @sailnice
      @sailnice 7 лет назад +4

      Due to the outlets below the waterline you have a selfsucction effect. The water will drain much more faster than grativity only.
      The 352 is a great boat. I own a HR 45.

    • @espenbjerke1905

      Thinking you might get water coming from the sea through the hose up on deck while healing ,best to have it under waterline.

    • @elang3366
      @elang3366 7 лет назад +3

      I thought deck drains always took the shortest path over the side usually above the water line, cockpit drains usually go to the other side of the boat...port side cockpit drains to stbd side and will be above the water line when vessel is heeling to port and vice versa.

    As you work through the refit, are you concerned about resale value? Just thought about that when you yanked the heater off. I think I'd have kept it on. It may also come in handy if you venture further north some day.

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  7 лет назад +4

      The heater was from the 80s and the previous owner had it half disassembled so it wasn't useable anymore. If it was we'd definitely keep it - we have plans to go to the Baltic....eventually :)

    So if you guys are vegans, why do you have fishing stuff? Not a judgement but wondering if you are not eating fish and stuff while sailing what your plans are for food options. My wife and I live a veganish/plant based lifestyle but eat fish, I guess more pescatarian and are hoping to one day do this same thing. We lived in the Melbourne FL area and are planning on going back soon to hopefully find a boat of our own. Really enjoying seeing more of the processes that you have gone through to get where you are.

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  6 лет назад

      Hey sorry for the super delayed response but we just saw this. Kelsey is Pescatarian but just says shes vegetarian because most people don't know what a pescatarian is. I (Ryan) do eat some meat (grass-fed, organic) now. Probably once or twice a week I'll have some as I noticed after 2 years of being vegetarian it wasn't for me. Seems a pescatarian diet really works best with the cruising lifestyle.

    • @iangarforth
      @iangarforth 6 лет назад +2

      Yeah, was going to ask myself. You said you were both vegans in the answer to a comment in a previous video, but couldn't work out why you were killing wasps and had fishing stuff. Plant based diets def work well with the cruising lifestyle, but the main thing is that everyone draws their own lines and work out what works for them. Anyway, great videos - keep up the great work!

They seem to be planning to leave the dock soon. Wouldn't life be a bit better if we celebrated people who are chasing their dreams and are trying to make some money to fund it along the way? • @andrewparry1474
      @andrewparry1474 5 лет назад +1

      You do not need to be rich to live on a boat. It is actually relatively cheap. Actually, I'd say that the more people spend on a boat, the more problems they're buying, and the less fun they'll have (opinion...not to be confused with fact).
      Of course, you're welcome to drown in your "pms" (poor me syndrome) - I'm disappointed to notice there's a bit of that around here (Sigh). But that gets boring pretty quickly, and it's kinda cringe-worthy.
      There's some amazing stories out there...people who have done things that you can't even imagine for ridiculously small amounts of money. Learn to sincerely wish the "rich" well and channel your pms energy into expanding your mind and you'll sail as far as your heart takes you - yes, it all comes back to the self!

    The vid had potential with the repairing stuff but then totally went down with the woman explaining how a shower looks like and that they have a washing machine and dryer and a pool. Then it jumped shark when you started to explain what a sponsorship is, who the heck doesnt know that? And it started to be really annoying when you kept repeating what you get for free to explain to us what these things are (advertisement). I don't need that and I dont want to see it.

    in my opinion ur "optimizing" is ridiculous you got ripped off on that boat for 30k are you insane, boat prices must be more costly closer to the carribean, i just bought a catalina 22 1988 perfect with double parts of everything for $600.00 usd

      A Hallberg Rassy 352 would go for closer to twice that price in Europe..I would like to know where you get your specifics from. Hallberg Rassy is a top tier brand and their second hand prices are usually significantly higher than another 35ft. Im saying this from a genuine position. Point me towards the realm where a Hallberg Rassy 30 is a rip off for 30k USD :D
