    Binge watched the entire series to date.
    Landlocked and didn’t want to leave the mountains... well ever.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY Miss kelsey !! I'm really enjoying your vids guys and your content is spot on even if its a bit short. I know your on the national park adventure but we still need our AC fix. Great anchor choices i have the same set up except the swivel they are worth every dollar. So glad to see the AC crowd growing so fast and the support it brings.
    " Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do".-Pele. And that is you two . p.s. I cant wait to see the new addition to the AC family in the upcoming vids. be safe guys.

    Just for extra safety I would add extra wooden bar just to make sure that in case you're boat will ever get knocked down that huge anchor will not injure one of you. You guys are awesome. !!!

    Thanking Uma for their well detailed ground tackle and hurricane video was neat and humble from you guys, keep sharing the knowledge, a lot of people is being encouraged from people like you, taking the fear away with optimism and positive attitude from those who get overwhelmed by the amount of books and contradictory or simply the sheer variety of old/new information. I have also chosen an oversized 2 piece anchor for my boat, keep up the good work, is great to see sailing channels growing !!! good luck and see you around the Pacific is you ever head west !

    Good video. Great choice for an anchoring "suite" together with the addition of the new chain. The weakest link in the system is that stainless swivel. It will break. First. Never used one in the 25K nm we sailed. Never missed it.
    Always used a snubber. 20 feet of 5/8 NYLON 3 strand. splice an eye on each end and one in the middle. Attach a galvanized chain hook to the middle. Make sure it is sized to your 5/16 chain and buy several because you cannot get them outside the US or Canada. Harbour Freight. Do not get the ones with a "keeper" just the plain hook with a shackle. They make great gifts for other cruilsers. Keep up the great work. Love your boat.

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks for the insights, Dick. We've heard that the swivel is the weakest link numerous times but really don't see it as any better/worse than a regular shackle. But we are still learning so let us know if we're missing something. As for the snubber - you read our minds! Appreciate your support as always :)

      @acmeopinionfactory8018 7 лет назад

      Dick Dueck A chain hook WILL pop off in heavy swell, better to learn to tie a rolling hitch.
      Would never trust a Harbor Freight chain hook with my home or my life.
      If you do use a swivel, best to use, again, a drop forged, galvanized eye to eye swivel from a rigging manufacturer, not one of those stainless units that can capsize and kink. Stainless is not as strong as high strength carbon steel.
      If you insist on a swivel, to keep it from failing as easily, attach a shackle to the shank eye, then a length of chain, then the swivel then a shackle, then the rest of the chain. Most patent swivels will not allow this, thus my recommendation to use the common eye to eye swivel.
      No kinks, no lateral force on the swivel, as happens when tide or wind acts on the boat to pull the anchor sideways.

    • @acmeopinionfactory8018
      @acmeopinionfactory8018 7 лет назад +1

      Abandon Comfort If the swivel cannot lay 180° away from your bow, that is to say, alongside the shank of your anchor, pointing towards the crown, it will fail.
      The lateral forces on the swivel presented by a well buried anchor when the boat changes direction are enormous.

    • @lazydays7470
      @lazydays7470 7 лет назад

      Totally agree with the advice about Harbor Freight Fool - nice stuff if you want to mount it on the wall as an exhibit, otherwise expect failure. A chain hook from Har. Frt would probably be cast and even if it was drop forged, who knows what kind of junk is in the alloy they used. Drop forged causes the atoms/molecules to align in the same direction which makes a much stronger piece. Even so all metal as it ages will crystalize over a long period causing it to become brittle and break more easily under load so don't buy used old material that will be put into a situation that your life depends on. As was said above, go to a professional rigging shop and get the good stuff.

      The simple solution to the problem of stainless steel not being as strong as galvanized is to de-rate the part and use one that is rated at much more than the breaking strength of the galvanized parts it is used with, then it no longer is the weakest link.
      This is what Mantus does with their stainless swivels. They are rated much stronger than the chain that is sized to connect to them. Simple engineering solution. They also are designed to swivel and turn at the anchor connection so they can't bind and bend when the anchor is pulled from the side.
      Of course the shank of the anchor itself can always bend somewhere along its length if the force is great enough and the anchor is set very hard, but this can happen to any anchor in certain situations so hopefully the anchor shank was engineered with enough strength to combat this. The nice thing about the Mantus is that the shank is replaceable if it does get really mangled in such an unlikely turn of events. Steel has a pretty high yield strength and is still pretty strong even after it has been bent. But if it has been bent so badly that the anchor doesn't want to set correctly it'll either need to be bent back (further weakened) or replaced. This is one disadvantage to the welded-on shank of the Rocna. If it does get bent bad enough the entire anchor needs to be replaced.

    I would get a couple of spare fortress anchors. You will want to anchor bahamian style when you get down to the islands. The fortress anchors are nice because they come apart for storage and have a soft storage case. You can get much bigger anchors since they store so compactly and are perfect for the muddy bottoms in the Caribbean.

    I have a self righting Rockna spade anchor for a 38' 30,000lb boat. I think it's about 40-50lbs. It is an amazingly effective anchor. A 100lb anchor would probably be more suited for a boat of 80' at 100,000lbs. Your oversized stainless is way more than you'll ever need, even in a storm.

    Hey, forgot to mention if you have a good cordless 1/2" drill that you plan to keep on board, consider getting a winchbit for your winches. It comes in handy if you have pulled a muscle or tendon or pinched a nerve...gives you time to heal a few days before having to crank winches while the mate is sleeping or cooking. It won't work on your brand of anchor windlass due to no rotary input but will make all of your winches electric for about $50.

    I would consider adding a small piece of chain, say 10 links, between the anchor and the swivel. In case the wind changes after the anchor is set, the chain bridges the side loads, not the swivel, till the anchor is reset in the new direction. For more info google anchor swivel and side loads, and I guess you would find more.

    Manual windlass' are a great workout for about one season, then you will hate it. If you drop 40 meters of chain, then decided you don't like the holding you are getting, cranking up all that chain by hand sucks. You will end up staying in a margin anchorage because you are too exhausted to crank it up and move to a better spot. This will be especially true in an unfamiliar harbor, after a long passage, in the dark and while it is raining. On a brighter note, love watching what you are doing to get ready to get out there. Cheers!

      Abandon Comfort It's not so much about your strength, but about the TIME you have to crank up 200' of chain nine inches per throw in a raging storm when you're dragging sideways into boats or onto a lee shore.
      An electric windlass will bring it up in under sixty seconds while you power towards it and are ready to re-set it instantly.
      Several times if necessary, without panic, stress, or injury.
      Think about it.
      Please.

    Sure it would be a workout to haul in all the anchor chain, but I would motor up to the anchor then the hardest bit is the vertical haul the anchor off the seabed. Make sure that the spare old anchor is really secure inside your boat. Like wooden clamps. You don't want that thing moving at all (not ever) in a sea way.Great videos.

    • @AbandonComfort

      That was my concern as well. 100 lbs of dense metal flying around the cabin in a knockover is going to really hurt somebody. The mount needs to be strong enough to hold it firm through 360 degrees of motion. Love your channel BTW!

    Great video! Just a note, Please! add a shackle between the swivel and the anchor shank! This is an all too common mistake made because the swivel is not meant to take horizontal bending loads. Boats sail back and forth at anchor, but usually the anchor does not move, just the chain. In your current setup, this would cause a bending load on the swivel since the chain would meet the swivel at an angle. Put a few chain links or another shackle, between the swivel and the chain to solve this. In squally conditions, the boat can violently shear back and forth and can break the swivel in this manner. I think this is partially why swivels have such bad reputations: they are often used incorrectly. Best Regards, Conor

    I must say I have never been sailing although I do live in Florida right off the coast. I found myself watching all your videos [[ just planned on watching one ]]. The reason? You guys [hate using slang] but you two 'keep it real'. I love that you show " Hey it's work, it's hot as hell and today we had to ...etc ' Other videos by other people kinda 'hollywood' it if that makes sense. You show it's a passion//enjoying whilst showing 'hey there is things that are crappy at times". So with that being said loved watching two people being humble, showing work, and showing success. So from Tampa, FL just wanted to say cheers. P.S I've never went fishing in the ocean so if you ever go out once to do it, I'd live to go....just once.....I prefer land. Good job you two and I look forward to more. =)

    If you get 250 foot of chain I would consider storing half of it over the keel to keep the boat in balance that's unless you are going to put out 250 foot every time you anchor. Do some speed tests with the chain in the bow locker & then over the keel, Keep a log of how many feet of chain you put out over a season then you will get the picture. Happy sailing.

  • @garyt2005

    Amazing, I'm at 4:10 min. mark and can't wait to comment. I'm ground tackle crazy.(I anchored out in 50 feet for 6 years) And those two spade are the best going. So your ultra is your working anchor. I feel its good (depending on the bottom) to 60 or more knots of wind. In a sandy bottom condition, after a big blow, dive on it and see if its disappearing ; going deep. The shank is cut on the bottom to slice down into the sea floor. In mud it would handle a lot more than 70 knots. It will reset immediately. As lone as you have enough scope out, enough (chain) that the chain lays on the sea floor as it approaches the anchor, you can go to sleep and forget about it in virtually any conditions. Your Massive (Spade brand) spade anchor is the best I know of. Its 140 knot ready with 250 feet of 5/16 G4 Hi test. In a hurricane I would lock your chain off at 250 ft so there would be no line (rope rode) to worry about chafing at the end of your bow roller. Your bow roller will cut anchor rode in real high winds. NOT CHEAP what you are acquiring but you will be better off that tieing to an old mooring that often breaks in a hurricane. You will need to move slowly forward while bringing in your chain and when right over your anchor let the boats momentum pull out the ultra from the sea floor. G.T. Silver Fantasy ..Friday Harbor, Washington.

    • @kasperhansen4472
      @kasperhansen4472 6 лет назад

      Like mentioned above chain 5/16 is not heavy or strong enough for a 7 ton boat. Calibrated Galvanised chain 5/16 weighs 1.35 kg pr meter and has a breaking limit point of around 2500 kg and a working limit of 630 kg, which is not enough in a real heavy blow. Both the anchors are way big enough but the chain is too weak. For the 3/8 chain the weight is 2,25 kg it is 4000 kg and working 1000 which is the recommended size by most manufactores.
      The weight of the chain is the most important factor. It will hold the chain down towards the bottom, when you have sufficient scope out, giving it a bended shape and thus creating a flexible and smooth draw from the boat onto the anchor. The boat that is being pushed away from the anchor by the wind and not least the waves will obviously rip the anchor upwards and possible out of the hold if the chain gets to straight. Long and heavy chain very important in heavy winds.

    As always I say back down hard when setting your anchor in to the prevailing. Make it seat deep into the sea floor. When you swing, your chain won't catch on it. Your boat's momentum will break it free when you lift it. The Ultra has that bar welded to help with that. Yesterday, Tim made a good point on going to electric....but you two are correct also. Your young; strong. JUST when you place your anchor...look for plenty of room...so that the first attempt is acceptable. Speak up when somebody drops on top of you...They have to move...catch them before they release there anchor. So far this summer twice I've yelled from my foredeck. ...G.T. S.V. It would seem to make sense to put some chain (1-2 feet) between the anchor and swivel. Those tangs look like they could pull apart or bend with your boat putting a lateral load on it as it changes position and the anchor resets. Not sure though.

    One last annoyance, if you have time, you guys should check out a song called "Mercury, The Sun and Moon" by Jenifer Jackson. There's a ton of great music out there (obviously), but this has been one of my faves, and I could see you guys, cocktails in hand, chilling to something like this on the deck as the sun goes down. I find it impossible not to tap my foot and feel a little Tango(?) lol! Don't know, thought you might enjoy it. Anyways, thanks again!!

    Hello, best wishes from Europe :) Watched all of your videos and I must say I'm impressed. Buying a boat without previous sailing experience, You are insane (In a good way). I have lots of sailing experience, worked as Captain for hire and buying my own boat was always a goal for distant future. You are inspiring and giving hope that maybe I'll reach my goal sooner :)
    Anyway, you are second sailing channel I subscribe to :) Fairwinds!

    I'm doing pretty much the same thing as you guys.i bought my boat and my only experience is a little sunfish in Boy Scouts! I've been following a lot of other boats on RUclips for about two years but your channel seems to be pretty close to what I'm going to experience.if you ever need a hand or crew for a sail I'd love to help.

    Just an observation to consider when stowing that hurricane anchor. You'll probably be needing it in a hurry when you've lost your other anchor and you're drifting. Or you'll need it in shitty weather when it wont be too fun assembling it and carrying it all the way to the front of the boat. I don't know your boat too well but look and see if you can't stow it somewhere ready assembled and closer at hand. Just my 2 cents. Keep living the dream.

    Now that you have the anchor you want, get out and get anchored. But you'll have to SAIL there first. Don't get me wrong, but am tiring of the marina. GO SAILING!

    I bought 2 mantus anchors,very similar design. On 13mm chain designed for a bigger boat than mine. Spent 6 months anchored in partially sheltered waters, not a bay not protected. Never moved once. Plough anchors are just that,ploughs. These don't move
    I thought I would have trouble getting it out of the bottom,nope,came up easy
    Good anchor means you have a mobile mooring

    Hi Guys, Great choice of anchors! I love the spade type anchor and wouldn't have anything else on my boat we have three. Did you notice the hole drilled in the end of your hurricaine anchor? Do you know what that's for? Well one use is you can attach another length of chain say 30' with another anchor. So it's like have two anchors in-line should one fail the second with hold and give the failed anchor a chance to reset! It beats having two anchors out on separate rhodes because as the direction of the wind changes the rhodes twist together and you have a mess besides the possibility of one anchor dislodging the other as they twist. Of course this only happens in the middle of the night so you have to go out iin the most miserable of conditions and work in the dark to keep your boat of the beach or rocks! Good luck, I doubt you'll have any trouble with those two beasts onboard! Love the videos please keep em coming!!! Bill S. s/v ODIN

      Haha you caught me! Carrying that damn 100 pounder had me quite sweaty. And surprisingly the AC unit has been kicking ass! It got fried though over the 4th of July weekend so we had to return it to Walmart and swap it for a brand new one. For free of course ;)

    Cool anchors. Am curious could you by hand carrying the 60 and 100 pound anchors deploy and retrieve them, without scratching the boat, if like me just tossing anchors over the side of my Ericson 25 sailboat bow.? Is 60 or 100 too much to hand lug ha.

    Hi,
    Have you considered twin anchoring and anchor weights which, besides being easier to handle than an oversized anchor, are as well probably more efficient to hold your ground? It's not all about size, dont you think Kelsy?

  • @spudboy1328
    @spudboy1328 7 лет назад +2

    Anchor swivels - Just say NO.
    If you are going to use one, then you should put a short piece of chain between the anchor bolt and the swivel. Reason being, if you put a sideways pull and the swivel is directly attached to the anchor the swivel will bend and break. The short piece of chain lets it move freely. But best off just taking the swivel out of the equation.
    That SS anchor sure looks sexy though!

  • @Blackford86
    @Blackford86 6 лет назад +1

    You should do a dry run on getting the Anchor out on a windy day in the bay, but not for using it but just to see what a pain it is to get out and hooked up for use. Just a thought

  • @fxpthl
    @fxpthl 7 лет назад

    Quite a difference in weight between the two! Will this lighter weight unit be able to hold as well as the heavier one? I thought the storage on the starboard side looked good and, as long as the hull is balanced, should not create any issues. My two cents worth!

    Sure to get some ribbing for the SS anchor.. From what I gather, it's how most old salts pick out the "marina queens" in a crowd.

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  7 лет назад +15

      Well we're sure to get a ribbing for half the things we do. That's just the nature of the beast that is RUclips. The anchor was free through a sponsorship. Can guarantee 100% of the armchair sailors who have a problem with the SS anchor would gladly flaunt it if they got it for free :)

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  7 лет назад +10

      And the fact that it was free does nothing to discredit Ultra. Virtually any anchor company will sponsor a sailing channel (With 10k+ subs) a free anchor. So we treated it (as we do with all sponsors) as if we were going to buy the anchor ourselves - who would we go with? Since we had pick of the litter, Ultra was our choice.

    • @CPTCleoTorris
      @CPTCleoTorris 7 лет назад +1

      Free is good.... If you get a ribbing paint it black :) Otherwise sleep soundly and happy knowing you fixed the problem with the swivel!

    Never fails, people neglect to rebuild and do maintenance on the Anchor Windlass and it fails in the Solomon's, Madagascar, or some other fairly remote place. After Irma and Maria, the best strategy is to head completely out of Hurricane areas, south, or possibly North, way north !

    I'm not even sure a 35' boat has enough momentum to set an anchor that big! Great choice of anchor, and bigger is better, but I think you're past the upper bound of befit vs too much weight in the bow.
