This decision essentially came down to what would we regret less. Continue sailing a boat we loved but did not need from a size or power perspective. Or go all-in on our dreams of living a sustainable, minimalist life while continuing to sail the world. Sure, our path is unconventional (meaning we downsized instead of upsized) but we aren’t the first sailors who felt smaller & simpler was better or that there is no need for a diesel engine with today’s technological advancements in electric engines & battery capacity.
This is our dream and we plan on sharing it in the most straightforward and honest way possible - like we said from the get-go. As we found out from a lot of Episode 30’s comments, some of RUclips’s ‘sailors’ don’t seem to agree with our minimalist, no-rush, nature-first approach to sailing. That’s fine, but we refuse to let these types of people derail our dreams. We’ve found from our own hands-on experience that this is what sailing is all about to us. This is us simply following our hearts.

I know that wasn't easy, but I believe it was the right decision. You learned fairly early on that it was more boat than you needed. You evaluated your needs, making those a priority over your wants. Brilliant.
And I was even more impressed that you made her new ownership a priority over the Almighty Dollar. That is karma that Mother Ocean will give back to you over and over.

As a member of an older generation, this episode affirmed my decision to become a subscriber and patron of your channel.
You guys broke your backs upgrading your boat (the episodes of your redoing the deck were exhausting just to watch). Your very hard work and dedication was truly impressive! Its clear that you guys never do anything half way.
You would have been more than justified in holding out for the highest price that you could, but your priority was finding someone who you felt would do the most right by your beloved vessel. You deliberately accepted far less of a sum than you could have. Truly amazing and refreshing in this day and age, and in a country where greed has become almost institutionalized (though you had definitely earned the right to ask for more). And Luci was truly a fine boat.
Fairly or unfairly, most people your ages are perceived as wanting more, more, more, and now, now, now. I work with a few; generally it's a pleasure, but there are those moments. You two are truly inspiring, in that you're cut from a very unique mold..
While I say go for it, as far as marching to the beat of your own drum, I have to give you props--that your relationship is strong enough that you could not only share a space as small (to me) as Luci's, but that you're actually wanting to move into something smaller! I could never do it. More power to you!
I really respect your values, and your integrity. You're not only a very nice couple, but you're clearly plain old (figuratively speaking) good folks. It's uplifting to know that there are people like you in the world.

Can’t say how much reading comments like these help with continuing to share our journey. We really accredit the way we view money to frugality & minimalism. Also, I (Ryan) almost lost my brother at 17 years old to a traumatic brain injury and best friend to stage 4 cancer at 21 which has drastically altered the way I view relationships. Thanks for joining the crew. We’re both excited to get to know you better!

That's a final boat. That boat will take you everywhere.
I can really see where you guys are coming from. I've got a 29 foot boat and it is simple. It's tiller steered so no worrying about snapped steering cables, I can pull the anchor up by hand, I can raise the mainsail myself and I can get the boat onto the dock by myself. As you say, marina fees and yard storage are cheaper for smaller boats and in many ways, the adventure is bigger in a small boat. Crossing an ocean in a 50 foot boat is an adventure, crossing an ocean in a 30 foot boat is a big adventure. Good luck.

Kelsey it was hard watching you cry! You made me start crying! I’m looking forward to your new boat and adventures!
Was not expecting this, Luci seem like the perfect size boat for you guys, but you have to follow your heart, we are also downsizing, my girlfriend has been offered a teaching position at Vanderbilt University in Nashville so we no longer need a 65 foot catamaran, we well be 9 months in Nashville and 3 months in Key West, we just purchased a Dana 24, its a great little boat with an enormous cabin, and its blue water capabilities are amazing, for us only being on her 3 months in the summer, it well be perfect. I'm going to miss the Cat, but not going to miss all the maintenance, good luck to both of you and Kelsey I hope your feeling better.
So why are you selling the boat that you worked so hard on?
I'm still a little surprised you sold the boat, after all the work you put in... And, that you never really got much time to sail her. I hope the oceans don't kick your behind in whatever small size boat you get...

Good Luck with the new boat. I have watched so many of your videos and I am constantly reminded so much of my boat; a 1979 Kalik 33' which I will probably have to give away after so much love, sweat, and tears. When I bought her, all I was thinking about was racing her....which I did, but mostly I had to start from the beginning learning about diesel engines, electric systems, water systems, rigging and so on. As you were kind enough to pass on information, the learning curve was steep!
Ahhhh - such a sad episode but also happy for your continuing adventures and that you found her a good home.

Great video guys! This is Michael with the Mariner 39 center cockpit (originally Proud Gypsea, now named "Sienna Skye" after our two kids )you guys were looking at in the beginning of your journey. We have spent a lot of time refitting her and are now selling her and are going to downsize as well. I think it takes some time living aboard to realize that you don't need as much boat as the current sailing culture leads you to believe. We wish you the best and look forward to more of your videos! I can't watch anymore...
I'm a super fan of small and simple. My largest boat so far has been only 23 feet. Won't go over 30 on the next one. Once we lived 10 weeks on a 19 foot boat while sailing coastal FL.

You did a good job on flipping her. A smaller boat might be just what you need. Hope your travels are safe. A lot has been done on smaller vessels. Will love seeing what you do with the next one! Plus smaller is always easier to sell in the future if dreams change.
Don't think the dream will change! We could've just went into a tiny house or van after this but we both know this is what we want to do. It's a ton of work but it's worth it :)
Can't help wonder though why you guys did not at least give it a bit more time to make such a big decision on selling your HR 35' after all the refit work, effort, and sweat and $ put in, and made an ocean crossing with her. Just seems like the perfect or "adequate size" for a couple and a dog to sail around the world on. Hope that your next boat ticks all the boxes (they never do though do they ! always compromises ), and are successful in finding a suitable replacement albeit smaller vessel that will handle long passage making with some relative comfort but more importantly with the space required for provisioning, supplies, parts etc. Just hard to not imagine you guys and the cute dog not getting the snot kicked out of you on an ocean passage when the weather doesn't match the grib files or the predict wind planning, and your out there in a fully provisioned and stocked

I have been looking at boats for decades. When I had the money the life commitments held me back. Now those commitments are gone as is my money and health. I'm looking much smaller and more simple kind of boat.
I watched ming ming and ming ming 2 construction and voyages. I'm sorry I'm horrible with names. I can't remember his name. But ming ming has brought me to wanting a junk rigged small cork in the ocean kind of boat rather then a a tractor that plows through the ocean kind of boat. Gotta find what's right for you. We will see maybe one day if I'm lucky we will see each other out there .

Interesting decision - but I'm still not understanding why the move to a smaller boat when all the logic I hear from other channels and sailors is that the smaller the boat the less appropriate for open ocean; the harder the sail; the more uncomfortable; the more personal space issues occur..if its financial bind thats understandable but unfortunate - seems a shame after all the hard work to sell so quickly - if its a millenial view that "I'm really an eco-warrior and I'll be saving the panet" by some sort of misguided Marie Kondo decluttering perspective then thats a little naive - as 15-20 less metres of boat won't really change anything..but if I'm missing anything let me know and we do have to find our own paths so all power to you..just seems a little sad and bewildering..
JoeTheLion60 we’ll have more episodes going in depth on our reasons. Yes, it was partially financial but from a long term perspective. It’s funny how this myth of bigger boats = more seaworthiness is so prevalent on RUclips. Our new boat has both a better capsize ratio & motion to comfort ratio. If space is causing issues in a relationship then you probably shouldn’t be together with your spouse. And who cares if we want to reduce our environmental impact? Call us eco-warriors or whatever the hell you want, this is simply us following our values and nothing else.

I lived on a Morgan 382 for 8 years. It is true that a smaller boat can be built just as seaworthy as a larger boat. The extra space on Lucy-1 could have been used for extra supplies & spare parts for long crossings, but given your goals, I think you guys made the right decision. You will take a hit in speed though, and I really hope Lucy-2 doesn't need as much work! Good luck guys. We're all pulling for you!

Brave but good decision. Don't stop sailing though whatever you do. We also recently changed boats and have no regrets. For us it was an upgrade yet still only 35 ft. Can't wait to see new adventures!
Guys, great video! Size and complexity are not always synonymous with fun. We had the privilege of meeting and chatting with Lyn and Larry Pardey at a boat show when we were starting our restoration of our WS42 Harmony. They have been sailing idols for us since their first books. Lyn made us promise that we would always strive to have fun! Follow your dreams and sail on the vessel that fits your life's principles and goals! Your footprints in life will always be larger than they will be in the environment! Kudos! Douglas Tate their book the Self-Sufficient Sailor was a major catalyst for us making the move. Them and omick.net (crossed Pacific engineless with sweeps for auxiliary power). It was weird we never found any sort of cruising mentors that fit the bill for us and then found both of them the same week. Love your tanbarks btw 🙂
Smart choice for you!!! I'm retired and want my first boat, it's on John Vigor's list...On his 2nd circumnavigation, James Baldwin sailed from Ft. Lauderdale to China w/o an engine --- he was towed thru Panama Canal by some generous sailors. He sailed a Pearson 28 and has done amazing/unique, 'one of a kind', small boat refits for years in Brunswick, GA as CYS company...

Good luck with your dreams! Everyone has an impact, it's a personal choice to decide the size of that impact. And it changes through one's life. I'll never do without meat, I think that's just about the dumbest thing ever (personal opinion and I don't care what other people do. Or why.). But I agree that going with an electric motor does make a lot of sense and it's been something in the back of my mind as I drop $$ on maintaining a 25-year-old Yanmar.

All the work you put into Luci and the experiences you gained in sailing her will serve you in good stead with Luci II. Solid decision and, amazingly enough, it only has to be the best decision for you two. Now, if you pop a San Juan 23 on us in the next episode (not that there is anything wrong with a SJ ; just not off shore material) we might be talking a Captain’s Mast in the near future. Ha! Can’t wait to see the boat you have decided to make your new home. I always wanted a Pacific Seacraft Flicka...
You will be pleasantly surprised! Can't go from an HR to a SJ haha. We got very close to buying a Flicka in pristine shape for 30k but realized their sailing performance is pretty terrible. The blunt bow doesn't work too well and it's motion to comfort/capsize ratios are really bad. New Luci has better ratios than the HR did ;)
Wow, congratulations I can’t wait to see your new boat. The folks you sold the Rassy to are very lucky you gold plated it for them. I love your videos; they are honest, transparent chronicles of your life and adventures. It’s so great to see the relationship that you had with the previous and new owners. I bought an Endeavor 32 the same vintage as your friends from Learning the Lines last year and it was not as pleasant an experience. The boat is in pretty good shape. Thankfully we don’t have to go through the refit that your friends are doing. However, it would’ve been nice to be able to maintain a friendship with the previous owner but that was not to be. We’re feeling our way with it. I’m coming back to sailing after a 25 year hiatus and I’m now introducing my wife and three boys to the sport. Keep up the great work with your videos and best of luck with your new boat.

A couple of things, got a cat named Luci , I’ve downsized from a 30 to a 25 , easier to single-hand and maintain, if you outgrow your new home you can always upsize a little. Congratulations on your new adventures I’m looking forward to seeing your new chapter.

However, now it kicks up a notch :) I am hoping to buy a boat, and am taking sailing qualifications as I haven't sailed since my childhood - when my parents had a Leisure 23! I always believed bigger would be better (so 40' ideal). Only thing holding me back now is having enough money - and smaller would solve that. So looking forward to watching this evolution, and having it challenge *my* perception of what is "necessary" - as always :)
Awesome!! Way to keep an open mind and think outside the box :) Whats befuddling to us is why the size required to blue water cruise has progressively gone up every few years. Granted there's not a lot of yacht builders making pocket cruisers anymore but still, the notion that size = seaworthiness just isn't true. Who knows though. We'll report back on our findings to help assist w/ your dream!

For me, your HR is a perfect size for two (maybe a wee bit small), but it's your dream, not mine. I hope you don't come to regret letting go of such a lovely and seaworthy boat and downsizing so much, but I guess you'll never know unless you do it. Good luck!
