this seems like a really cool boat, im certain that being able to beach it would be a really unique way to open up many more possible destinations, IMO this is a dream of a find just really really expensive IMO, then again my boat is only 7.3m so i cant really talk much
I'm no expert on that particular boat but it's nothing I would consider buying due to it's neglected state and the amount of money needed to get it back in condition to sail again.. I also think it was way overpriced before you even negotiated and at your negotiated price is still way too much money.... Before handing any money over or signing papers, I hope you get a professional survey done. The previous survey done was done too long ago to still be trusted... Professional surveys are usually the best money spent before buying any boat costing thousands of dollars. The interior will probably clean up pretty nice once you get all the junk out but it's still going to take some work and money to get back in shape...
We immediately recognize this Philippe Harlé plan, built in Condé-sur-Noireau, Normandy, France (I worked with the neighbor of the construction site, a printer). Indestructible. The shipyard still exists, it moved near Cherbourg (still in Normandy). Do not hesitate to ask them for information on the assembly of certain parts. In addition, the architectural firm is in La Rochelle, under the name of Mortain-Mavrikios.
As an old professional mariner....federal service academy grad...uscg licensed ship master....of all the sailing videos I have seen I must say that you are the exception....You people are professional sailors...Good job...enjoy watching
That was a very professional, nicely complementing, and friendly review, Sir. I enjoyed reading your comments as much as watching their video. Thank you.

Congrats Juho and Sohvi. This is a great purchase. The boat is structurally sound, the engine is new and it looks like there is SO much space inside! I think the potential is enormous. Very good judgement - a very smart move.
Very smart purchase. Discounted for all of the equipment that needs replacement and that you want to be new anyway. Love the open cabin plan. Perfect for 2 people. Congratulations!
You don't want to get rid of that stuff there were inflatable rafts rope etc much of that stuff can save your life if your engine died or get stuck with no wind.
Awesome!🥳🤩 congratulations Juho & Sohvi! What an amazing boat you got. Definitely a great deal;) and good on you for lowering the price to smth more manageable. Love the interior layout as well. Things really get interesting when the boat gets a little longer and a bit wider😜 I do truly love our Cape George cutter and that is why we put in all the work we have BUT ther is lots to be said for an Aluminum boat like a Garcia with a nice and uncompromised interior like that. And i don’t think the owner would have accepted 11k$ which is what we had😸 Ps: i would be interested in those cowl vents if for whatever reason you are removing them. I don’t see why you should though. And now time to roll up the sleeves and get to work🤙🏽 Cheers, Aladino
No not dumb at all. You got a good deal and even with a modest amount of work you couldn’t lose out on value. Really look forward to hearing about your plans. A safe return to Iceland and look forward to your project. Thank you for all your hard work in producing another excellent video. Stay safe.
At first I was worried. As you no doubt noticed - that particular marina is (locally known as) where boats go to die. But now I am more relaxed as I realize you know more about this stuff than I do - although I have been involved with several sailboats from the neighborhood. Including my current one. Welcome!
That's a great price for the solid construction and size of the boat including almost new engine. It's going to be a big project but rewarding at the same time. Very pleased for you both.
Congratulations ! As for the costs, it seems you know what you bought: a sound hull, sound interior woodwork, engine with few hours. You'll need a budget for sails, rigging and the electricity/electronics. If you have the funds to refit her, you'll have a boat that is good for many years to come. And she looks nice :-)
brilliant!! She's been waiting for you! can't wait to get started! we certainly have the imagination to see beyond the surface... almost feel as excited as if we bought it ourselves. can't wait to hear the wind in her sails. Congrats!!
with your knowledge I trust your judgement. You have a unique need. So go for it! I sailed for 30 years with several yachts but never in cold weather. So look forward to your refurb and travels.
“Arctic Sailing” caught my attention. I am retired from the US Coast Guard. I’ve been to Vitus Bering’s Sea 15-20 times, usually 2 months at a time, 3 months twice. In all that time I saw 2 sailboats in the Aleutian Islands. A sloop of just 30-35 feet in Dutch Harbor and a ketch of 60-70 at Kiska. Doesn’t seem to be a popular destination. On the Atlantic, though, the whaler commanded by William Scoresby, Sr., had been above 81 degrees 30 minutes north courtesy of that big bite out of the Arctic Ocean’s ice caused by the Gulf Stream. That’s where he only had 2 chances to determine his position each day- LAN (Local Apparent Noon) and LAM (Local Apparent Midnight). No morning sight, no evening sight, because the sun did not set when he was there. Remarkable!
@@sanfranciscobay Granted. The surface of the sea turns to grease ice, the snow that comes in with the ventilation doesn’t melt, winds can be above 100 knots long enough to burn out both of the wind speed sensors, radar antennas can stop turning, and stores of baseball bats and axe handles are onboard to help de-ice (Kevlar lifelines are easier to de-ice than phosphor bronze wire rope, BTW) . . . but summers can be wonderful!

You've made a good choice! Congrats to you! Heavy displacement and deep draft is over-rated. Being able to beach the boat is a great feature! Great to see!
A good power wash, and that boat is going to shine. The boat I am on now, my second, had a lot of growth on it too being on the hard for 9 years. I am a visual person, so the first day that I took ownership of her, I power washed and scrubbed the decks by hand and she looked GREAT. I can see the potential. I think you made a great decision.
I think you got a great deal. Your gonna need to put a ton of work into it but in the end you'll know every inch and trully be the OWNER. Looking forward to seeing the transformation. 😊
Congrats! Highly interesting boat, extremely well-built and well known brand. One day I’ll come over and visit you when she’s fully refitted. Good luck and look forward to next steps!
Could you please tell more about the process how you found this boat? Which websites you used, which are reliable which are not? What information someone needs to find online at least before continuing to look into a certain boat etc. How long did the process take for you and how many boats were on your shortlist? Hi guys. I have looked beyond the mess and the untidiness below decks. I think you have a perfect foundation for a blue water cruiser. There is plenty to do to get it where you want it but it's basically a blank canvas to put your own stamp on . good luck with this project.
So so happy for you. She's perfect. The price reflects only what you are prepared to invest ... and you both look so pleased. Looking forward to the coming refit. Bravo.
Solid hull and solid interior, plus a new engine. You got a good deal. She will clean up nice and fast. Good find! I bet you could get her back in the water within a month and then take your time upgrading electronics etc. will be fun to watch you guys bringing her back to life. Got a name yet?

Don’t let people tell you you paid too much. You might spent 75k on it to make her nice. Don’t think you could find a nice one for under 200. We are building a 50‘ Berckemeyer. Just our deck hardware costs more than your boat… like you said, get her safe and get her sailing. The rest will fall into place. Good luck. Maybe we will meet one day out there… H.
Btw, come up to Seattle. Great yards and cruising grounds up here. Including Canada and Alaska. Maybe we’ll do the north west passage together in a few years…
On first seeing this boat I thought ! what! are they thinking. However the more you showed the more I had the vision to what can be. Thank you for sharing and inviting us along with the beginning of your adventure. Good Luck.
The interior is surprisingly clean when you consider the state of yhe exterior. It's gonna cost quite a bitfor the refit, but the working engine is a major plus. Hopefully the spare sails are duplicates so that might save a bit. I hope you have plenty of elbow grease for cleaning her up!! Good luck to the two of you. I hope to be joining the liveaboard community I the coming months🤘
I’m excited for you, the boat is great & perfect for everything that you both do. A friend of mine had a smaller Garcia in Alabama years ago and I can remember what a beautiful boat it was but very few people knew anything about them around there...
Congratulations, you will refit this diamond in the rough and end up with a very nice boat that will serve you well . Can't hardly wait to see what she looks like once you remove 15 years of dirt and get all the junk removed from the inside. This will be a great series of videos seeing this boat come back to life on the water. God bless and good luck be with you.
So happy for you guys! Garcia makes great blue water cruisers. I think you got a good price for it. A ready to sail version would have been way, way more $$.
Bought a smaller Camper an Nicholson, same state as this. 2 years to completely refit, 10 years happy live aboard ! You have a great boat there - bloody enjoy every minute of it.
CONGRATULATIONS!! Just be careful with the daggerboard(do not forget to pull it up!!!!),I know of a Garcia that sunk within minutes after running aground with the daggerboard in the Bahamas. It ripped out the trunk and the boat went down really quick. Just a reminder to always pull the daggerboard up first !! Anyway, fantastic boat, fantastic deal. Enjoy!!!☮
Rig an alarm to the depth sounder via the daggerboard/lifting keel mechanism so you get bells and lights warning if you get even close to the bottom and the keels still down.
I knew nothing about this boat, but my instinct was that you knew all that was required and that there were credible reasons for you to fly to the US to thoroughly inspect, assess and test this boat! You weren't in the least deterred by it being dirty or having stood for 15 years, because those didn't matter, and you were focused on what did matter! Your meticulously precise examination of every aspect of the boat and the professional testing you had carried out, along with the known facts of the boat prior and post it being on the hard enabled you to make a well informed decision as to the purchase of this rare, sought after boat. Thank you for sharing your experience, you have an air of quiet, calm confidence and capability and I am happy to subscribed to follow your journey with your rather special yacht.
I am looking forward to watching you refit and ready your boat for the sea. It has good “bones” and will make a fine vessel. Blessings for safe sailing. Enjoy the adventure!
Unbelievable…I have my boat in that same yard. I have been admiring that boat for years. I just found your channel last night and after watching I decided that I was going to enquire about that boat the next time I went to the marina so that I could do some high latitude sailing. Anyway, congrats! Guess I’ll stick to the tropics.
You guys have never shied away from doing serious boat work.Looking forward to seeing you complete another task and your getting out on the water. All the best to you both.
Very nice boat which has a lot of positive qualities! top deck, cutter rigged, dodger to protect from the elements, and a good view from inside the boat. Downstairs looks spacious with a nice master cabin and lots of room and storage. Congratulations to you both. I look forward to seeing the refit and getting you both from the high tropics back to the arctics :p Thanks for sharing.
Congrats Juho and Sohvi! And what interesting project for us to follow too. I’m sure you’ve made a careful and deliberated decision here! Aivan mahtavaa 😊
I'm new here and no sailor at all - too old - but after watching other channels, Sailing Uma, Sat & Tar, Tally Ho, Odd Life Crafting etc, I can see the huge potential of this boat. It's cruddy exterior has surely turned off many buyers. But your keen eyes saw it's true value ! And apart from it's interior mess, it looks as new ! And the layout is perfect. In short, a great buy at a good price !
This will be a fine sailing ship. The essentials are in good condition. The interior is also nice. Of course, there will be a lot to replace and refurbish, but it is no longer a big expense and you can do most of it yourself. (Create a to-do calendar.) I think the price was realistic. I envy your happiness and wish you all the best!
Congratulations for a buying yourself a new boat. Looks like cleaning, electrical & riging refitting project. + whole a lot of small maintenance ones. Good luck. Love to wach next videos
This seems like a good deal for this size boat and being aluminum and of a good design.Looks very comfortable living space and I cant imagine it will ever be to small in the many years to come even when the kids arrive lol :) New main sail and running rigging and you could be good to go.Good luck and I look forward to following your channel for many years to come.
Mamma mia, when you showed the space down below it blew my mind. Congratulations on your new boat. I have subscribed! Ciao from Portugal. Yin and Jan Maaso
Going from an asking price of $85k down to a selling price of $57k took some great negotiating skills. It's going to take a lot of work and $$ to get it ready for the water. Did you say the boat is in California? If so, that is going to be a long sailing trip to get it back to Iceland. Good luck!
Nice find! Looks like the Bay area in California? Sailing North means BC, Alaska, NW passage then Greenland?... but first a little work. I can't wait! Actually I'm jealous.
This is a really nice looking boat from the inside. Just having the much of a flat floor and ceiling space goes along way. It could be your new dance floor.⛵+ Dance floor 💃🕺
Congratulations! Love the interior layout! Also it looks in surprisingly good condition. Only thing to look out for is the electrics. That looks like a mess and on an aluminum boat it needs to be immaculate. All circuits both AC and DC need to be isolated from the hull with a high impedance coupling at only one point to the hull. Ask 10 experts for advice and get 20 opinions. Do your own homework and trust no one!
if it's a budgetary stretch you could start out old-school and brush up on pilotage and possibly even celestial nav techniques, all of which are always a great fallback and would enable you to do without anything fancier than a handful of handheld waterproof floating vhf marine radios (with GPS) USD 100 each new old stock on eBay, and a couple of decent hand bearing compasses and a really reliable distance log. Paper charts are often available in shipping ports for not much. All up: a few thousand bucks, and you could wait until you're on top of the refit outgoing costs (and spend more on key items like sails, running rigging and anchors) because after all, electronics are a nice to have rather than a must have. And when eventually you do buy them, and more importantly, the wiring) t's not something you would be well advised to economise on. I'm very happy for you about the boat, but I'm surprised you went for something so big. Of course you will know running costs increase with something nearer the cube of the length tha the square, but I guess you have your reasons.
@@Gottenhimfella The equipment is not the issue, the stuff onboard probably still works. The grounding in aluminium boats is critical. If you do it wrong electrolysis can cause a lot of damage in weeks.
@@Gottenhimfella Every alteration could be disastrous. One example could be adding a VHF or SSB. The antenna connection will normally be grounded and create a hard link between the hull and the minus. (Use a isolated DC-DC converter to supply just the device to solve this) Every change should be thoroughly checked.
That is a very special boat with a lot of special attributes. She looks solid and while a lot of work and money needs to be invested; what a beautiful and capable boat you will have; and worth a lot of money too. Congratulations and looking forward to the adventure.
Tough decision, much more to be revealed later. But in any case, there is something that influenced your decision, so glad to see a new sea monster! Good luck! 😎💪
Congratulations. It seems that you have found a strong foundation and you will make her happy again. My favourite videos of you have been of kite skiing and fixing problems. I suppose my biggest question is interior hull insulation (assuming you will be sailing in high latitudes)? I look forward to the refit and to your solutions. It's a big job but it will be interesting to watch and I think it will be really good for your channel. I have owned my present boat for twenty years from brand new and before my children were teenagers. I have lavished her with love and care, three generators, electric toilettes, power winches and the best lingerie available. With some degree of remorse I have decided to sell her. There are spares for spares and much extra stuff that will not feature in the sale price. I cannot say that for the new boat: for the new boat I am paying through the nose! I hope that you find many spares and many good surprises with your new adventure. Fond memories, fair winds and God speed.
thanks Oliver! too bad you're selling your boat, but there's life after boats as well! ;) Our Garcia is spray foam insulated above water line. It's not a lot of insulation but it'll be enough for us!
Congrats kids! This boat looks similar to “ODD” out of Brazil. They spent over two years to get her back into sea worthiness, but oh how beautiful she is now! (She was on the hard for over 22 years).

Looking forward to watching where this one goes! Looks like it's got it where it counts. I kinda dig that aft layout, could make for some cozy socializing.

After watching your channel for over a year, it is fun to go back and watch this!
I think this boat, and all the work going into it, will be great for your channel. Can't wait to follow the transformation!
Congrats on your purchase!!! It looks like " Odd Life" all over again :)
Bought a smaller Camper an Nicholson, same state as this. 2 years to completely refit, 10 years happy live aboard ! You have a great boat there - bloody enjoy every minute of it.
Congratulations! Looking forward to you both getting her seaworthy again.
The good thing about this boat is the space you have to make whatever you want in it, great potential. Congrats.
A great adventure awaits. Let us concentrate on the positive.
Yikes!
Is it a vertical dagger board or a swinging keel ...i would have thought Garcia would have gone for the the latter ... As its more self protecting?
@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 The boats have both,a centerboard for lateral resistance and a daggerboard aft for trim.
looks great! I love that it can clearly cross oceans, yet dry out on the beach also!
Looks like an awesome deal for you. Congratulations to you both!
I think it's a great boat and look forward to watching you work your magic on her
Awesome!! Congratulations team, going to be an interesting build series!!
I think so too! thanks damian!
Boat looks Great looking forward to the refit hope everything goes as good as it can with boat projects you have been busy since the GPR boat.
As long as you’re both happy with the price, who cares what other people thinks. 👍👍👍
A fantastic vessel, will clean up beautiful, we look forward to future videos and adventure with you both. Cheers from Australia
hi mick & annie, nice to have you along!
Guess I’ll stick to the tropics.
volunteer for the refit, maybe get an invite to sail north.
Those boats are great to go around the world, high or low latitude…
Haha, I’ve got my own wreck to tend to! I’ll definitely buy them a beer if I bump into them and I have a ton of tools that they can borrow.
Curious as to where the yard is - can you spill the beans?!
Not to the evil Prof Heinous…MUAHAHAHAAA! JK, all of the clues are in the vid but they clearly didn’t want it revealed so I’ll respect that.
You guys have never shied away from doing serious boat work.Looking forward to seeing you complete another task and your getting out on the water. All the best to you both.
Congrats! I cant imagine finding a Garcia as a bare hull even for less than $50k so i think its a great buy. Can't wait to see the process.
(Create a to-do calendar.)
I think the price was realistic.
Good luck!
Most people would run away, when they see something like that.. Thats probably why,...
Looks like good value despite work that needs doing. Good luck with the project ahead and the bonus will be the sunshine and the oranges!
That's a lot of boat for 57k. Definitely not dumb, just a lot of work ahead which will be well worth doing.
Great base for a refit. I look forward to watching you bringing her back to life, then your voyages sailing her. Best wishes from Scotland 🙂
@@Gottenhimfella my way of thinking too
@@Gottenhimfella The equipment is not the issue, the stuff onboard probably still works. The grounding in aluminium boats is critical. If you do it wrong electrolysis can cause a lot of damage in weeks.
@@Nerd3927 Well if it was done wrong, the damage you refer to would already be done.
And Juho was specifically talking about replacing the equipment.
Good luck! 😎💪
What a beautiful boat, you got a great deal. Now comes the refit, good luck on your project.
You definitely got a good deal 👌 congratulations 🎊 👏 💐 🥳
That is a lot-of-fun-to-renovate-thingy..... looking forward to follow your journey on this one.
@@AlluringArctic Webasto for the WIN!
Insulation ? Not a problem, got plenty on his head ! Yuck !
What a gorgeous boat! I love the shoal draft in particular. I'd never heard of these before, but now I want one. 😁
Really excited for you guys, she will be a quality boat when finished
A super deal! It is clear that you know your stuff. Cant wait to see the progress on this boat
A great boat at a good price. I look forward to seeing the refit.
Congrats kids! This boat looks similar to “ODD” out of Brazil. They spent over two years to get her back into sea worthiness, but oh how beautiful she is now! (She was on the hard for over 22 years).
Congrats. It's a big decision... She looks promising
Congratulations on your new boat . Roll up your sleeves and make every day count, in the end you guys will have an awesome boat . Cant wait to follow your progress with this project.
She's going to be a beauty... just needs half a day with a powerwasher and she's good to go..
... and a big trash dumpster!
You must be the previous owner. 😄
😂
Power washing. yeah, that's it.
It's gonna cost another 50k to be good to go
I am thrilled about your purchase of this vessel! Can not wait to see the restoration!
What on earth is that growing on your head?
Wauw! Great boat. We looked also at Garcia and Boreal before we baught our Ellya. They are great and you can sail everywhere! No doubt you are handy and get the job done. Have good times and enjoy. CU, Cees (SY Ellya)
Very Nice!!! Congratulations, if as you state the boat is sound structurally you have made a very good deal. Look forward to what comes next, Looks like your in the Delta area.
OMG you're going to be busy! Good luck! Looking forward to following along with the renovation 😊
Congratulation on Your new boat. I think You have done well. It looks to be a VERY nice boat (or it can/will be). Looking forward to see more of it
Looking forward to watching where this one goes! Looks like it's got it where it counts. I kinda dig that aft layout, could make for some cozy socializing.
A 44' ! That's a Yaught! It has great potential! Tripping from Iceland to CA ads a bit to the price to, but she's a beauty! Can't wait to see her all cleaned up! The inside is great!
What a project. Congrats on this great yacht from a thrustworthy and successful builder. Well done. Good luck with the refit.
Great news! Congratulations! Will be exciting to follow you re-fitting your new boat in the future!!
i think you guys did a great job inspecting the integrity of the boat, i am sure any rubber seals for the windows will be sun baked. but i was very surprised at how well the interior of this craft was. great find!!!
