If your short on water and deep on keel, you can put a water bag/weight on the end of the boom. Kick the boom out to heel over a bit. Makes a good way to get through shallow water or short/unattended bridges. Have had to do this in Tampa bay getting to lima mike.

For storms while on the dry so to say, ALL Sea Cocks and all opens need to be total secure! The bilge pump should have been connected to pump out any standing water. The Alarm was running so why not the BP. Yet, you live and you learn and some lessons are far more costly than others!
The tea colour in the bilge water is from tanins in the timber it has contacted with. Either the teak deck or other timber inside your boat. Make sure you get a life jacket for the dog, preferably one with a loop on the top that you can hook a boat hook onto. Ii wouldn't hurt to have a water activated flashing light unit attached to the life jacket as well: www.whitworths.com.au/burke-uml-seaflash-lifejacket-safety-light-kit you should also have these on your own jackets.
This www.hr352matilda.com/?page_id=84 and www.yachtsnet.co.uk/boats/h35515/h35515.htm both suggests that the core is PolyVinyl not Balsa. "The teak-laid decks are on a sandwich GRP moulding, the sandwich construction using polyvinyl cellular plastics as core material rather than the more common and cheaper balsa. "

Also for deep cleaning of all soft furnishings Baking Soda will get that well under control, Also melted baking soda in hot water and a spray bottle will be great for all other cleaning! Baking soda kills most all the mold spores, you will never kill them all. Baking soda aids in killing reproduction of the spores! Yes I was born on GOM and we would also use melted baking soda and lemon to clean with!

Hey guys, glad to see you're back to the boat. We had a cat aboard in the Caribbean from 2006-2011 and were only asked for papers one time. Even then it was no big deal. Don't stress too much about it. It's hard to believe that anyone wants to see a chip down south, but we be interested to hear about it if you've heard something different.
Super excited to see what you guys come up with for solar and faux-teak decks. Those are two projects very high on my list and I'd love to see/hear your take on them!

Hey guys. Did you ever consider just taking off the teak, making good & painting with a decent deck paint. Most long distance people that don't have an Amel (they come with plastic teak from new) eventually get rid of the teak because it's just a pain. It only provides extra weight, there is no structural component to it.
I love the genuine human reactions (i.e., Kelsey receiving a new puppy). You two are quite an inspiration, and through it all, you maintain a positive motivated attitude. This is why I subscribed to you two! (er... 3, counting new pup). I will be cheering you on for your next adventure :)

Guys, Please volunteer on a sailboat racer. I am sure there must be local racers that always need crew. Getting on a racing boat you will really learn sailing in all conditions, and what boats are capable of. You will learn very quickly. Nothing teaches you quicker than throwing in a reef when you are in a squall when the waves are crazy and wind going in all kinds of directions. Lastly, dumping your bilge water to your sink is crazy. You want water to get out of the boat as quickly as possible! So many things can go wrong and I can easily imagine on hard heal or rough seas, your bilge wanting to dump and water going everywhere. Just not safe or a good idea. You need to sail in big winds and heavy weather. You need that experience. Before you go into blue water, you really need to fix all the leaks. Sailing is truly wonderful, but it can be incredibly dangerous, and the speed it can go from this great to holy s$%^& we could die, can be very quick and unexpected. Once things are settled, go somewhere for a week. You should experience all kinds of weather for a week, it will give you a taste of what you are in for. Can you live on your boat for a week without going ashore? Do you have the power to pull that off? What about water for a week? Good test. Fairwinds!

It will feel so good to have some of those projects done! I am convinced that there are few things that make a person feel better about themselves, more, than a good productive day of work. Especially when it is work that you want to be doing like working toward a common goal with your significant other.....such as sailing the world! Hey guys. Glad you are back on the boat. Here is a tip from an old salt. As you go south, the humidity will rise and remain constant. Almost everybody in Florida has a dehumidifier in their home. As you travel and network, make a list of friends with portable dehumidifiers and borrow them as you go. A dehumidifier can make a lot of difference on a boat. Mold and mildew doesn't grow in dry places for example. When you are in a yard or marina, hook up and dry out. Dehumidifiers take up a lot of room and aren't needed all of the time. That's why sailors just borrow them when needed. Again, welcome back to the cruising world.
White Vinegar will take care of the mold, stock up!
Frank Smith Quite right. It does a good job. Unfortunately, it doesn't get the moisture out of mattresses, cabinets, and the bildge after your best wipe down. Vinegar and a humidifier would be terrific!
We have a dehumidifier on our boat that we brought from Sweden and it is absolutely amazing to have at times that we're in a marina. It makes a huge difference.
We HAD to get a dehumidifier this winter for living aboard! Everything got so damp it made the boat a very cold place to be and worse still, mould started growing! Love ours - it's made a MASSIVE difference to comfort living aboard this winter!!

Add amsteel lines to your boat. They can be used in place of stainless cable. My family always carried amsteel in various diameters and lengths just Incase rigging or cables let go. The only time we ever needed it was when the rudder broke 5 out of 7 bolts in seven foot swells on a rough run. The cable abraided through and we had to replace it with the amsteel to get in. It actually held up for years in place of stainless steel until we replaced it just cuz.
We ran backup rigging with it too when we were in conditions where even with just a storm jib we were concerned about losing a mast. Mainly extra stays just Incase. In one regatta it saved a mast but we were pushing and 2 other boats same as ours bent and lost half their mast. I assume nobody would push that hard lol just go bare wire and drag anchor in your situation.
I was young and can’t say for sure, but in that regatta during a few broad sides with my mom screaming about life jackets and cursing non stop, either I had a momentary mental lapse or I actually heard the voice of god crack through the pitch black sky. A motorized fishing boat cut our spinnaker free a few minutes later and the boat was sailing again... which had completely fouled the prop

OMG !! I love that dog better than the boat lol.
We just left the same marina. I strongly suggest using the Navionics Sonar Charts. They were spot on for the canal system and detailed enough to be highly useful. We draw 5'8". We only ran aground once by what they call the rock. We exited the locks on a 1.2 and didn't have any issues. Rule of thumb, ask the depth of CBS haul out slip, that represents the lowest depth you will have in the canal system IF you follow those navionics sonar charts. Running aground is frustrating, but not the end. We were aground almost the entire path coming in last april. Also, it is possible the water color was due to teak stain. We see this all the time. It may have picked up the color from the deck before finding it's way inside. Just remember, if it can leak it will, if it suppose to drain it wont.

The best way to get rid of mold is to get an ozone machine. Look online I think you can rent them. You would need to seal the boat up as best you can then run the Ozone for 6 - 12 hours. It will need 24 hours to air out. Ozone will kill all the mold and anything else living so no plants or people can be in the boat until it is fully aired out. Really glad we have one. The warm tropical weather on the island of Roatan is a perfect environment for mold to grow.

I would skip the synthetic teak... expensive, gets hot (real hot), and labor to install is not as bad as real teak, but still higher than others, and the weight! 2 gallons of Kiwi Grip is $250, and the money you save over synthetic teak can go to those solar panels which are way more important.

Regarding the pick up on Toronto, I'm pretty sure if you spend another day or two in Canada you shouldn't have to worry about customs and duty, the cost of the teak should fall under your allowable purchase limit. Also since I love dogs I have a roll of netting that you can have for $40 or two AC t shirts if you want to grab it on your way to our from Toronto. Love the videos, keep them coming!

Yep...we are living aboard in Marina Del Rey. and it's a 1991 Hunter Legend 43. We are in the process of unloading all of our stuff in preparation for the big move.

Another thing to be aware of for an 80's boat.... kind of strange... but some builders used aluminum backing plates for stanchions.. stainless bolts.. to aluminum.. means dissimilar metals... and electrolysis.. and the backing plates fall apart.. happened to me..

Sorry to hear that your grandparents house smelled stinky ! Mine didn't , it smelled like fresh baked bread sometimes , coffee and bacon in the morning , and fresh baked desserts like cookies and brownies, and old spice after-shave after hugs from Grandpa ! Yep both of my grandparents houses smelled wonderful especially around the holidays !

if you want to see whats involved in replacing a teak deck you should check out sail life, he is a danish guy who is replacing a teak deck and core on a warrior 38, it worries me that you know the deck is leaking but you are going to just order/replace the deck without checking out the core first once the teak is off. gl and i hope you guys don't have a damaged core.

I love your episodes! I have to say the thing I'm really interested in seeing is your solar set up. I want to go solar on my I36, and have been considering the same setup you mentioned. Happy holidays m8ies!!!
Really looking forward to your solar project. I'm just getting started with my own. I had a custom radar arch built for the panel and I also have a set of dinghy davits that I can fit an extra panel to. So far I have the arch and the solar controller and some wiring done. I still need the panels and batteries. I'm thinking 2 200Ah 12v batteries because I've completely re-wired my boat eliminating all AC power and all DC fixtures have been replaced with LED I mean everything interior, exterior and mast. I think my biggest draw will be the radar and GPS systems which I do not have to run radar all the time. I've started to explore batteries and I'd like to get life line but they're so expensive a single battery was quoted to me at 749.00 I can buy two off eBay exactly the same for 339.00 ea. So it's almost two for one. I think I'm going to try the cheaper batteries to start with and maybe slowly replace with better batteries. I'd love to know what panels you're thinking of and why. I still have no idea about them yet. All I know is the technology is changing fast and I don't need them till the spring so they'll be the last part of the puzzle. I'm thinking 2 or 3 260 watt panels depending on what I can fit easily. Please go into great detail when you get going on this, I love hearing and learning from others! (it saves me money....LOL!) Not sure how loaded down the boat was when you came in to this marina, but maybe not having it provisioned will help with the lack of water... I saw on another channel the couple emptied the boat as much as possible and they gained like 4-6 inches, from just weight that was on the boat... maybe load up "Maggie" before you guys leave on the boat and then have someone drive the car to the next destination? :)

Could you tell us more about how you keep roo onboard the boat and and that bell and how you trained him? What you plan to do at sea with him? How will be go to the bathroom at sea?
Excited to have you back to Canada! Here are some travel tips: Canada has Provinces, not States, and not "Providences", that's in Rhode Island. Restrooms are called "Washrooms", because they are for washing your hands, not taking naps. When you bring your deck material back, be sure to state that it is synthetic, as bringing wood, plant matter, or even types of meat across the border is often illegal. Finally, Toronto is our largest city, and is the most multicultural city in the world, so be sure to sample some food from some very exotic cultures as it is cheap and accessible. Safe travels.

Looking forward to your solar panel install, I've got 2 small panels to trickle charge my engine battery and 1 for my house battery. Problem I have is using power while on the go as the house battery doesn’t last long while sailing.
Put a few drops of pure vanilla extract to keep your bilge from smelling, it works great!

You guys are so low key yet you are getting a lot done. I think the tannin color bilge water is from wood work below the water. Quite common to see that..but not great as the wood is taking some damage. For the tropics teak even fake is really hot. I think once you get the deck off you will say 'let's patch this damage, and put a layer of fiberglass over the whole deck ( for no leaks) and paint with your favorite non skid. But you surprise me so I look forward to seeing what happens!

Hi guys! Enjoying all your videos - all of life is not excitement and adventure so we really appreciate the more informative videos you post as well. We are looking at live aboard life ourselves in the next couple of years so find all of your experiences and learnings very enlightening. I really hope you keep your thick skin when it comes to the nay sayers, complainers, the crazies and the down right a$$holes you will encounter in the comments section of your videos (and there sure seems to be a lot?!?). Learn from those who give you advice to truly teach you and actually want to help you along but leave the rest of the sh!t where it belongs - in the (composting) head!!
Stinky boat solution, get buddy propane, $80, it will run about three hours on 1 pound tank, come back and dry boat, it will get 100 degrees! Also auto dish detergent works great in bilge and water tank, gets old people stink out LOL
Might want to take a look at 'Boatworks Today' new video "Making Templates For The New Teak Deck" for a boat he's working on. Might help with your deck replacement project.
