The sheer logistics of mobilizing men and material with all that brick and mortar is blowing my mind. I build large homes in some pretty remote locations and people don’t grasp the issues of moving materials like this and this place is over the top huge!! Thanks great video again.
Pat CB thank you for the support! It is truly astonishing, they were able to transport over 16 million bricks to this remote island in order to build this fort on 16 acres!
I’ve been to Fort Jefferson on a live aboard dive trip, it is an AWSOME destination! I have toured the fort and dived the reefs in the national park and areas around the park for 5 days (in the mid 90’s). It is an incredible location. Thanks so much for allowing us to live vicariously with you and sharing your adventures
I was there December of the same year, so just some several months later, it was amazing. Not as much sunlight, but the water was exceptional, and agreed the photos don’t even remotely do this place justice. Just standing inside the fort and seeing the blue of the sea shining through is truly awesome. The fort is historic and is quite the remarkable place to visit. Certainly it was a dream destination for myself for some years. And, while it must be nice to fly in, sailing was an amazing experience. Bud I have to agree, the visit seemed not only rushed but was expensive. If I could, I’d do like you guys! Quick shout out to the yankee freedom. My visit there, a front came through that day and it was just amazing being there, seeing the many shades of blue, turquoise, purple etc. I loved my experience. So much coral, turtles and giant lobster. The sea glass on the beach was also quite remarkable. I loved it. 12:33 that was my favorite swimming/snorkeling spot- if you walked to the end of the key there was a massive collection/arrangement of conch shells.
So many great memories flood my mind, and it just is one of those experiences that doesn’t seem real

We camped there one night. Snorkeled the coal dock, so cool. The rats at night were crazy.

Ben Durant you should see the San Juan Islands out in Washington.... Dry Tortugas were the prettiest place I had ever been and that was even replaced by the San Juans...
Easy to get there from Seatac by bus up to Annacortis. Ferry to Friday harbor. There is a bus that travels the island but you could also rent bikes.

I camped at fort Jefferson for my 60th birthday enjoying the fort & the great snorkeling round the island. It was a great time, glad you got to spend so much time there, the other sister island are worth visit as well, great sailing destination!

Awesome video, outstanding camera work, 3 years ago me and my cousin sailed a 18 foot hobie cat from Key West to the
Dry Tortugaus,the winds were from the east at 20 knots, we average about 18.7 knots, we covered the 70 miles in just under 4 hours, had to carry extra water and food plus we had camping gear we were a little over loaded but not to bad, coming back it took a little longer, had to do a lot of tacking, we just had a compass and a hand held gps to keep are heading

Yep, you are definitely living the dream! Such a beautiful place. I've thought about going there when I was in Key West, but I didn't know it was that expensive. It is however an experience. Can't imagine sailing up to it. Thank you for showing it.

Fascinating ... it honestly looks nothing like the pictures I've seen!
I went to Fort Jefferson twice., once by myself on the ferry and the weather was beautiful, went snorkeling around the fort and saw some barracudas and other types of fish. The second time I went was with my family and the seas where really rough, so most of the people on the ferry got sick !
I was watching your video of for Jefferson and I had to tell you my Great Grandfather was stationed there at the end of the Civil War (he was from the north) and while he was there he guarded Dr. Mudd. At some point before Dr. Mudd was released, he gave a hand made wooden box (which he made) to my Great Grandfather. "George Philip Baugh" My Great Grandfather was discharged from the Army in 1867 as an invalid. I visited Fort Jefferson in 1995. At that time they had no records of those who had been stationed at Fort Jefferson.

It’s is very interesting how similar this Fort is to Ft. Sumpter in SC. Nice job!
They’re all similar as they were all designed prior to 1840’s...
I was there 10 years ago and the cannons were just laying on top of the fort. I always wanted to sail there but still new to sailing at the time and dont really trust the swing keel Catalina 22 to go bluewater. One day the big boat is coming, till then ill see through all my youtube sailing friends.

Have been there a few times. First time I was there was when the Mariel Boat-lift (Cuba) was going on. Several Coast Guard cutters were there for a day of R&R. They invited us to a big bbq they had on the beach. Very cool.
Back in the early 80’s parts of the moat had fallen and it was open to the ocean and the snorkeling was awesome. I don’t remember any saltwater crocodiles but, there were some of the biggest barracudas I’ve ever seen.
The scope of what it would take to build this now would be quite a task. To think of doing it in the 1800's without a fresh water aquifer... amazing management of materials, supplies and people. You both seem some different now, for the better. Makes me think we should have thought to live a way like this, instead of the stressballs that the corporate types would keep us bouncing. Look forward to all that you will keep bringing to us. Thank you !

I visited the Fort in December of last year. I didn't get to see the crocodile either, but did see several Goliath Grouper (as big as 300lbs) at the main dock. Did you see, or hear about them while visiting?

Looks pretty warm outside. I saw that other lab laying in the shade on the island. How is your pup doing when you leave him on the boat all day by himself? Being that he is a working dog do you feel having him out at sea is the best environment for him?

Took the ferry there a few years ago. I'm so jelous. Definitely can't do a trip there in a half a day. You can do a four day camp but you need to bring everything you need with you and take EVERYTHING with you when you leave.
That transom, ( stern mounted swim ladder) will be an advantage in a blow while getting aboard. G.T.

For those of us not from the USA it would be great if you could elaborate on where you are, after a bit of investigative work I found it on openseamap, but I initially though you were in Havana! I would not be surprised if lot of americans are aware it is US or the fact is a an old civil war fort there, most are prolly only aware of it due to piracy legends.
