2] Survey, Sea Trial & Swedish Ladies | Abandon Comfort - Sailing The World
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 22 мар 2017
- When we started our boat hunt we had so many questions with regards to surveying a boat & what the hell a sea trial involved. At the time, there weren't any videos documenting a sea trial or a survey. We had so many questions - who drives the boat? Who is responsible for putting up the sails and getting the boat ready? Well, we learned that one pretty quickly - the broker.
Almost to our weekly episode goal!

A HUGE thank you to John from Suenos Azules Surveying. We knew we couldn't go wrong with hiring a fellow ex-coastie :)
With Love,
Ryan & Kelsey
that surveyor is an absolute legend, he deserves all the good reviews he got for sure!!
tubbyrainbow111 Agreed!! He was awesome to us and we highly recommend him!
We found our Pearson-33 in Indiantown Oct-2010. We went there to look at a steel hull, disheartened by the holes in it and the yard man told us about our boat. It had Toilet (not connected), oven (not hung or connected), anchor (no rode), sink (laid in the hole not connected) and we got it for 10-grand. We motored West through the cannel, turned and came North in the ICW and arrived in our pre-rented slip in Pinellas County in five days. We only did 5.25 knots average and 6-hours a day but the boat did fine. Fortunately, I was a rigger in the Army, A master plumber for a living, taught electronic engineering for five years and earned my FCC and GROL for the VHF radio. I built the boat to make it cushy for her (girls need to NEST), and moved into it in St Petersburg March-2011. We have been living on our boat now for six years and we love it. We go out cruising with our yacht club group occasionally (Bo ca-Ciega-Yacht-Club).When you come to St Petersburg, beware, only two of several slips we were in have issues. Almost every marina we have been in has provided what they say they will. The remarkable ones are the ones that are very bad places to live or visit. In our experience Twin Dolphin is number one to stay away from. Second would be across the river at Regatta Point. All others in the Tampa Bay area have been wonderful. One last thing, 33-feet is big. a few more may be okay, but you pay for it, it's not that much more helpful and there are some places you can't go if your much bigger than 37-feet. Go smaller if you can. Learn what you need then step up later. Also, a 44-foot mast is a long way up. And hang on to the ropes when you go through the locks. When they open, your boat tries to go thru that little slot so HANG-ON. Look us up when you get here. Mary is a nurse.
Sounds like quite the adventure! We are already located in St. Petersburg - right next to the Dali museum. Love it here and we'll be sure to not check out twin dolphin or regatta point!! Thanks for your support :)
Great video. Very informative. Someone please give that surveyor a medal of professionalism!
How could anyone give this a thumbs down : ( New Fan Here! Man... Even though it 3 years for RUclips to send it my way as a suggestion, I'm glad they suggested it today. I needed that. I can't wait to view the rest. Thanks for creating, posing, and sharing. And a belated congratulations on your journey. Blessings!. Brad.
I absolutely love that the two of you are going after it. Keep it up!! There's no re-living yesterday.
I like your editing here, cant wait for next episode. Nice work.
After watching your first video I had to watch the second. I was getting ready for an exciting binge watching experience but lo and behold, only TWO VIDEOS???!!!!! Ha ha. Oh well. I guess I'll just have to subscribe and watch as your live aboard lives unfold! Wishing you all the success that Riley and Elayna have had!
Haha yea only two videos right now! Next episode will be out in the next week or so :) Thanks for the support and for following the journey!!
This surveyor is on point.
Benjamin Shannon He was incredible. Worth every penny. He has spared us from wasting so much time and money!
I'm super stoked for the beginning of a new sailing series. I really enjoy the format you're going with... and dreamless is an excellent choice of song for this video.
Awesome to hear you enjoyed it!! Thanks for your support :)
I stumbled on your channel the other day. Looks great, I wish you luck and success. I'll keep watching
This is the sailing Channel we been looking for start to getting wet....HONESTY in sailing and how to make it happen. We love you guys already, sub for life. More content, more, more, more !! Great editing and shots. Keep on living your dream you soon to be salty pirates !! Fare winds
Thank you!!! More content is on its way! We're both working full-time currently so making videos is hard to make time for! Once were cruising we'll be making videos full-time :)
I saw your first video and now watching this one! Great work, you research everything very carefully! Best RegardsJeremy Toronto/Canada
It's great to come back to this video and see how disappointed you were in this boat, already knowing what's coming next! The HR was just waiting for you.
:) Universe had something else planned for us!
Congrats. I can't wait to see more. Living on a boat has been a wonderful experience so far.
Thank you! We agree. This lifestyle is unparalleled :)
Wow 5,000 subscribers I thought you were an established channel with a bunch of videos I needed to catch up on until I went to watch the next episode! Lol good job guys I'll be tuning in for sure. Keep me coming.
I know right! We're blown away by the support we've received. Truly humbling :) Plenty more episodes in the works and once we're out cruising full-time we'll be making weekly videos.
Good job with the boat surveys, guys. It's nice that your surveyor let you know the initial condition before charging more money.
We'd pay 10x to have that surveyor save our asses all over again!
Love all the details you guys show. Good stuff!
So excited for your guys journey! Congrats on the new boat and I look forward to seeing more awesome videos! Wooooooo!
Thank you Mikinzie! Episode 3 is slowly in the works so stay tuned :) thanks for supporting the journey!
Thank you for getting footage of the survey, and talking about all the costs involved in detail. Very helpful to watch you guys go through the steps (I'm saving $ and researching researching researching right now to do the same). Looking forward to more episodes!
This is awesome to hear and is the reason we are doing this channel. Let us know if we can help in any way. Our goal is to get as many people as possible living this lifestyle. Thanks for your support :) - R&K
Not even 2 episodes in and Ive learned enough about buying a boat that I have had to start a check off list, Thanks a million guys.
We literally had this exact survey where so much was found early on...the owner was furious and called the surveyor a fraud...it was a lot to go through but we learned a lot and were so glad for our amazing surveyor for being honest with us and letting us cut the survey short. It pays to get a good surveyor! Our boat is still out there somewhere!
Excellent....much much better. Congratulations! The first boat wasn't even a give away.
Thank you Marshall! Yes we agree she is much better!
For me is not "Abandon comfort", from my point of view it would be "Light travel", where basically it is to leave behind everything that is superfluous and to value what you have and where the ingenuity is one more crewman. I wish you the best and only the best from the bottom of my salty heart, Congratulations guys!!!
Abandoning comfort to us is removing the unneeded like 1000s of square footage we never need and also getting out of our comfort zones :) Thanks for the support!!
Good on y'all with your first Blue-water sailing vessel. Respect her, take care in the re-fitting or fitment of her, learn everything you are able concerning the maintenance and care of her, then go beyond that and learn more... She will never let you down in the worst of sea's, even very confused sea states as long as you don't ask more of her than she was designed for, she will bring you home with a smile on your face every time. Remember, never, ever fight the sea, you may win a few skirmishes now and again yet in the finial battle old Neptune will pitch-pole or role her, de-mast her and leave you far astern without as much as a "wasn't that fun". My wife and I went through 5 vessels (sail) before we eventually fell in like with a 64' Ketch rig, we learned to deeply appreciate and respect her as our home and an entity unto herself, in the end, we loved her as only seafaring folks can love a safe place to be at sea or tied long-side a quay in ports around the Caribbean, Mexico and the Bahamas on passages to many to count. Be well, congratulations.on your new adventure, this may well be "adventures in paradise", just ask Gardner McKay..
David & Jo Ann
Capt, SV Eleutheros (ret) after 70..
She's earned our respect and were humbled she chose us! We're about half way through the refit and are staring down some big projects coming up but once we're done she'll be back out adventuring. Kels and I hope we get to have the experiences you and Jo Ann enjoyed :) All the best!
Just found your channel. Thank you for sharing your journey with the world. It's nice to be a fly on the wall and I wish you two all the best in your adventures.
I agree with all the comments never give up on your dreams. Wish I had done this kind of stuff when I was younger but it't never to late. We sold our house in Canada and moved full time to the island of Roatan last year.
Wow! What an incredible move. Congrats to you for taking the leap! Thanks for the support :)
ditto what zzz said! stay focused on what you want and go get it! focus on what you want and not on discouragement! and thanks so much for sharing ! your videos are great and you're the only ones doing it! keep doing it! you'll find the right one!!! aloha from Hawaii!
Thanks so much for your support!! Hoping we make our way over to Hawaii someday :)
In your first video there were short, glimpses of this boat which showed telltales of other issues which permeated the entire structure. Glad your surveyor talked straight, and you passed. Good call.
I really enjoyed your video. Quality was very good as was content! It looks like you two have good heads on your shoulders and I am excited to see your journey making memories for a life time. GOD bless and fair winds. JC
JCAJCA3 Thanks so much for the kind words and support!! Stoked to have you a long for the journey 🎉⛵️
happy for you 2. thanks for sharing your story. i too have never sailer at 53 years old but i have been very interested in an adventure like this in a few years at early retirement.
David Spensberger Thank you for the kind words. Early retirements are the way to go! I highly highly recommend reading (if you haven't already) MrMoneyMustache.com. He's been a huge influence on us and is the early retirement guru!
Love this surveyor guy… need more like him
Yeah I'm going to follow you two . . . another genuine young couple :) So refreshing :)
Thanks man! Happy to hear it comes across as us being genuine...who woulda thought ;)
Just found you guys, immediately hooked. Some time ago I discovered the sv delos videos and was always a little disappointed that I missed the start of that adventure. We looked into a similar lifestyle 25 years ago when we moved to Florida. Regret that we did not get a boat then, and still do! Who knows, maybe by following you, we will learn and give it another look. Wish you the very best!
Awesome!! Happy to hear you're enjoying our series and hopefully we'll be a catalyst to you accomplishing the dream :) If you need any help or want some input on pursuing this lifestyle again, please don't hesitate to reach out. Happy to help in any way we can to get others pursuing this dream!
Thanks for showing the survey! It’s good to know what to look for if I am ever lucky enough to be in your situation! Recently bought a hobiecat to bridge the time until we save up enough for the big boat 😊 you probably dodged a bullet there and good luck with the next boat!
I appreciate that you are up front with your finances and the costs you are incurring. It helps to know what my wife and I are up against in our future plans.
Looking forward to seeing your next video.
Best of luck.
Awesome to hear it's helping others achieve their dreams! Expect more financial details as we continue to incur them - it's a boat after all :) We'll be doing a monthly expenses report while we're sailing too!
I noticed in the phone message from the British seller that he mentioned sailing with you to St. Petersburg. I've had my boat in St. Pete since October and I believe you two will love it here. I've lived all over Florida and like this area best. I am a friend of the Sailing Uma couple (Dan and Erika) and I donated some electric vehicle components (speed controller and main relay) to the Uma project. They are really good people who are on the right track......seems you two are also. Good luck to you both.
We LOVE St. Pete! Agreed it is the best Florida has to offer. I love St. Augustine & the Keys but St. Pete has an incredible community vibe - hard to describe. Thanks for lumping us in with Dan & Kika, they are part of our inspiration to just get up and do it. Thanks for the support and stay tuned for episode 3 :)
Keep up the dream! ..and take your time choosing the right boat. We bought our first boat which was too big for us and we lost a bit of money. But we have regrouped and are starting again! Point is don't get down!
Absolutely! We lucked out by going with the smallest boat we saw during our boat hunt - and now that we live in it we realize we could've gone even smaller!
Congrats and the 2nd boat looks so good. Well done on getting your dream started.
tanenolan Thank you for your support! The journey has just begun 😎
saving your soul is not abandonig comfort!!hugs from Sweden.
Keep up the good work, looking forward to your next Vid.
Thanks for the support Glenn! Episode 3 is on its way :)
Good storytelling, already from the start. Definitely worth a click on the thumbs up and the subscribe button. Look forward to the continuation.
btw. The HR352, good solid workmanship in the bottom. Not the worst of choices, even if there are always more surprises - and cost - than one is calculating with.
Consider two useful subscription; practical sailor magazine and morganscloud.com. Huge amounts of good advice on DIY and gear that works - and not.
Thanks for the kind words and support, Petter! We've been to morganscloud a few times now :) Stay tuned for more videos!
Yeaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!! Very excited for you two!!!
Thanks for the support Jeff!!
We went through the same exact thing! Found a boat in our price range but going back and forth between Mississippi and Panama City, FL a few times, survey, hotel rooms etc... we probably spent over 2k just looking at that particular boat. We were heartbroken. After the survey we were so bummed out. But were kicked back in gear, and back on track looking at other boats and even acquired a free 31' Seafarer which we are now in the process of giving away. Thanks for the videos guys! ~Sailing Outcasts~
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! Man what a turn around.. Gotta see the next video.
Mantus!! great anchor! 12,000 views already on your second episode..I don't know if there is any appropriate considerations for the H.R. decks as far as a preserver brush on product of some kind. Check into that. Did I see part of a windvane.Oh my gosh!! So nice and expensive. In heavy weather a windvane out stears an autopilot....And.. thats win you really appreciate the help. Probably doesn't need it but I would switch out the impeller. If the existing one fails its a BIG problem , plus your motor overheating and lift pump warping. ( and dismantling part of your motor to dig out the parts.) Watch how sailing ruby rose folks apply lots of comfort to their cruising. I like her morning briefing where she talks through whats going on. Lots of pillows, tea, chats . G.T. There experienced so its nice...
Excellent video!
Well done again guys
I'll be looking in to buying in the next 3 years. Congrats you guys! Hopefully I'll see you out there one day.
Thank you! Looking forward to you getting out on the open water. Please let us know if you need any help with the boat hunt :)
New subscriber love watching your videos, love seeing a couple talk about money.
Great story. Looking forward to seeing more!
Chris Bagosy Thanks for your support 🙂🎉
H-R 352 - Fantastic boat. I hope it goes well for you.
Just about sailing Thank you for your support! We really lucked out with her and she's been incredible to us!
Cool ass boat guys.....looking forward to see it in detail....best of luck
Thanks for the support, Marty!! Next episode we'll go into detail on her history and will do an in-depth boat tour within the next 2-3 episodes :)
Congrats on this major accomplishment!
Thanks David!! :)
So glad I found you guys. I plan to move onto a boat in the near future. Still in the research stage but I am sure one day I will get there. Thanks you guys :)
Catherine Janes Awesome!! We'd love to help in any way we can. This lifestyle has exceeded our every expectation and is better than we ever imagined. Don't hesitate to reach out on Facebook 🙂
Abandon Comfort. I did not know you have a facebook page. Awesome!
Great survey man
Looking forward to the survey on this one, it was pretty obvious the condition of the first one with just a few views of it. Colorado is cool too, Love it there in summer, did that after my first sailing in Caribbean adventure, now i'm on the water again in Charleston. Good luck with everything, read lots of books, lots of preparation will save a lot of headaches!
Michael Thompson Preparation is key for this lifestyle! Sounds like you've had a few of our dream adventures - jealous! We both love Colorado Springs but I really can't do cold or be land-locked. Thanks for your support and hoping your still out there planning your next adventure! - Ryan
Great video as usual :) . and awesome ending :)
Chris McEvoy Thank you again for your support. You the man!
Good for you guys!!
Exciting!
Great Info!
Love the videos, not staged, great
That HONEST MAN!! saved your FANNY
At last some reality in sailing videos, keep em coming.
:)
Awesome to hear the videos come across that way! Thanks for your support Andrew :)
Congrats on the boat! I'm just down the road (er.. canal) from you guys! Looking forward to more episodes.
Thanks, David!! Haha, we're usually up in Rochester once a year for the holidays but we live in FL! Neither of us can do cold anymore :)
Ah ok, I watched the first video and saw/heard Fairport. Awesome village there. We've got a few more years until the kids are done with school then we're headed for warmer climes as well. Good luck!
Yea Kels is from Fairport :) Awesome, best of luck with everything and don't hesitate to reach out if we can help in any way.
Good luck with your new boat! A 352 with your budget is quite a steal or at least over here in europe they normally fetch higher prices.
Yea we really got lucky with our 352. All credit to the previous owner for being a stand-up, reasonable guy. Thanks for the support :)
Better to get the right one then just take on a headache! Sometimes making a hard decision opens up the best one for you!
awesome guys good luck
yes, Yes, and YES!!!
looking forward to new episodes, thumbs up
Thanks so much for your support!!!
Congratulations, guys! Looks like you got yourself a decent boat.
Yea! We lucked out. Thanks for the support :)
Excellent Smallpool track :)
I moved back aboard and I'm completing my cockpit enclosure. . I know your busy. Excited to see your updates. Gary
Good to hear, Gary! Are you doing the enclosure yourself? I don't know if we've told you but we're doing a full enclosure for ours as well. Excited to have our own screened in porch :)
Nice vids...Cheers.
Follow your dream.
No matter what.
After all we only have one life to live.
Be safe always, take care👍
Absolutely Luis! We all seem to forget tomorrow is never guaranteed. All the best!
You guys love your cliffhangers!! Hope the next vid is on it's way soon😎 Looking forward to it!!

Gotta keep it exciting!! Thanks again for your support :)
At 14:43, I met my wife on Friday night , spent the night with her then moved in the next Thursday, in Jan 1992. Still together ! ANYTHING is possible !!! lol New viewer from 'Learning The Lines'. 2nd video. 66 yrs old !
They abandoned this channel.
Oh this outta be goooooddddd........watching the freak out on how much marine stuff costs....old boat....and new at it.....cant wait.....next vid please!
Cheers.
Nope! No freak out here and we've owned the boat for a year. One of the nice things about being frugal and living debt-free is when shit hits the fan and you have a break out another 4-5 thousand it doesn't hurt because you already have that money stashed away for such occasions. Cheers!
Now I understand the timeline, glad to hear you have purchased the boat and I assume you plan is to catch up to current times as the video come out ??
Thanks.
Can't wait for the next installment. I am in the researching stage right now. I see you bought her, and kind of reading between the lines gather he had something come up so sell the boat to you he did. Can't wait to see what happened and why.
Ron Hunter You got it! Way to read between the lines :)
Hey, I just found your channel. I have my heart set on a HR too, but I'm on a five year plan. The HR 39 speaks to me... I'll be following your progress with excitement. I wish you two the best.
Thanks Sven! Let us know if we can help in any way to get you out there asap! The 352 is plenty big enough for the both of us so we always recommend going smaller and going sooner :)
Right on, thanks... BTW, the spring Annapolis sailboat show is coming up. It's a great place to get some deals. I don't know where you two are from, but if you make it to the area, I'd be happy to show you around.
good luck to both of you, keep your dreams going never forget what your doing it for ,your lovely people ,I'm doing the same thing
Thanks for the support, Ben!! Best of luck to you on your adventures as well 🙂🎉
1st I hope the 2nd boat turns up in much better shape as you have not seen the hull (so far), on first glance it is much more workable than boat A.
2nd I hope you learn something about old boats from your experience. Typically a certain brand will show the same problems across the line unless there were major changes in const. tech or owner changes. You will spend half your kitty on upkeep and unplanned expenses. You could easily spend 10k repairing the rigging. SY Zero spent almost $9k US to repair his rudder and he did most of the work. That new Yanmar may save your asses one day, take care of her.
3rd Learn seamanship, take classes, crew other boats on deliveries or passages. Get a Captains lic eventually. Read everything you can find. Always set anchor alarms and make sure you use enough scope, check the set. Also join the group that gives you the best towing deals, you will run aground. Avoid bad decisions and Get There Itis. Take safety seriously, more so underway.
I have 50 years of boat experience and currently own 4 all in refit lol. Good Luck and following winds.
Thanks David. We haul out the 2nd boat in the next episode and check out the bottom. SY Zero has a Formosa-build boat so problems should be expected with those considering their construction. Not saying HRs aren't prone to the same issues just saying it's a lot less likely which is why I had to give up the Southeast Asian Boat dream. As for seamanship - I was in the CG for 5 years so know my fair share of navigating & linehandling. Towing memberships were a definite for us given the amount of boats I've seen run aground or need to be pulled back home. 4 boats in refit!? Man more power to you! 1 is plenty for us :) -Ryan
That sounds like a really good price. Did a quick check, and here in sweden they seem to costs twice as much. But that could also be down to a difference in market overall.
Looking forward to follow your adventure as we continue on the road to our own with our Malö 106.
Yea we got really lucky with the price of our boat! No credit to us though - just the previous owner being an awesome guy. Fair winds on your own adventures :)
I am sooo happy U guys didn't end up on a plot of land!!!! U guys are meant to sail!!!! Just subscribed and looking forward to your videos. I am getting out there myself, but joining a crew. Aloha, Pualani
Thank you Pualani!! We're so stoked we ended up on water as well :) All the best with your travels!
Whoa! Crappy experience with the first survey. Good thing you had an honest an impartial surveyor. Better news at the end. Hopefully things have gotten better.
Definitely has!! We absolutely love our boat and are so happy we get to call her home.
Thumbs up for the survey guy!
Awesome!!! I hope it all works out for you on this one.
Thanks for the support! So far it has! We absolutely love her :)
It's great to have a dream but a plot of land is so much more of a solid investment and it can only go up in value. Boats are a lot of work and expensive to maintain. You two make great couple, what ever your choice may be I'm sure you'll live a long and happy life together!
Lmao! I just spent 3 minutes writing you two the most inspirational "Don't Give Up" message! Then in the last few seconds of the video you bust that out. I had to erase what I previously wrote and write this. Good for you! Keep your followers posted!
Kass Ritchey Hahaha I kinda wanna see this inspirational message now! Always watch till the end with our vids :) There's always something revealing or exciting!
Awesome guy 👍🏼 I wish you the best of luck 😌
Thanks for the support, Zac :)
😊 ☀️
look on Kijiji there is an endurance 38 fiberglass with aft cabin ibold design 32 but a good sail around the world boat
I didn't know you were a Coastie- I'm ex- Coast Guard also. Congrats on the boat- that is exactly what I'm looking for in the future.
Right on! Where were you stationed and what was your rating? I was a BM and was in Cape May & Yorktown. Thanks for your support :)
Cool, guys keep filming!!!!!
Алексей С we have about a years worth of footage to edit! Stay tuned :)
That was a good survey it showed that it was probably not the boat that you are looking for! Nothing wrong with that! its just a learning lesson of what to look for next time before you pay for a survey. I think with any sailboat 28 ft and over there are so many things to look at, you just need a good and impartial surveyor! Personally I just get to emotional and loose my objectivity.
It was an expensive hard lesson, as are most! Yea it's hard to get over our emotional bias towards a boat once we start to envision ourselves owning it. That's why hiring a surveyor brings you back to reality :) Thanks for the support!
Hang in there. I have already subscribed and can't wait for the next vid. I'm 55 and been around boats my whole life. I'm wanting to live on a trawler and tow my cc. on an adventure but my wife is not sure about it. Shee may have to fly to visit me from time to time. Your lucky to have some one that shares your dream. GO FOR IT
We're two peas in a pod. I'm extremely grateful to have her as a partner :) Thanks for the support and encouragement. We'll definitely be going for it here in the next few months!! Stay tuned!
.........What will happen next? Hurry hurry! Thank you for sharing.
It's coming!! Stay tuned :) and thanks for watching!
What a great surveryor! Man, did he save you guys a shitload of $$. Great video--love your series.
well I guess you can disregard my first message since I just now finished watching your video and see you made a nice Buy on that boat. Good for you.
Thanks, Blaire! We lucked out with her :)
I've seen, in my couch sailing experience, several surveys, and this is the type of guy I'd like to find when I do mine. He knows the impulsive nature of first time sailboat folks and he's kindly telling you the bottom line. I might have a small whiteboard with me so I could add this up because its all relative, and fixer uppers take money but a lot of I depends on who is doing the fixing. I haven't seen him show galvanic stuff yet, and not sure he will even get to that point. This boat seems to have some expensive problems and you haven't seen the engine yet.
Thumbs up and subscribed. Glad it didn't end on a bad note.
Thanks Jerry! Us too :)
