Nikki's explanation to Joshua of managing the lines was excellent! I knew that Nikki knew her stuff but this little snippet exuded so much theory and practical experience moved me even further into the Nikki fan club!
I have watched and followed several sailing couple channels over the last 7+ years and yours is my favorite. As many of us do, I live vicariously through you of a lifestyle that I will never have. Thanks for videos that are expertly edited and always filled with entertaining content no matter where you are or what you are doing!
I feel the same. The production value on this channel is absolutely one of the best of any sailing channel. And Nikki and Jason are so unpretentious... Some sailing channels I feel like they're just trying to shove in my face how glamorous their lifestyle. But I really feel like Nikki and Jason are just trying to have a nice time, spread some love, and share their experiences with the audience. Makes it easy to want to check in week after week.
Oh to be lost in your videos with sheer enjoyment. Even the videos of mellow times are just fantastic. Have been following you for years and I thank you guys for sharing your world with us!
After all the work you have put in, all the decisions made, all the money put in, all the time waiting - it is so sweet just to spend sone video time in the boat to see what it is like. It will be exciting to see the work done and the impact of it all on the next crossing. Thank you for sharing all this!
The fridge as you know is a heat-pump that pumps energy from the primary heat-exchanger side inside where the groceries are to a secondary external heat-exchanger outside the cooled space. Residential fridges are either stand-alone or integrated into kitchen closets. In the former case, the outside heat-exchanger transfers heat freely into the space the fridge is in. In the latter case, the cabinet needs an air intake at the bottom of the cabinet hiding the fridge and a chimney with exhaust at the rear of the fridge. The air being moved by heating (convection) needs to be able to go somewhere. How did they do that with your integrated boat fridge? Note that automatic defrosting on the inside (briefly?) is done by reversing the heat-pumping so a bit of warmth is put into the heat-exchanger on the inside of the fridge and this melts the ice that got condensation-frosted on it. That melted water then generally flows away to the outside of the cooled box onto the compressor (pump) where it has to evaporate during the pump's duty cycles. And this evaporation also needs airflow to happen enough. Of course, in a boat with bilge pumps, that water could equally well be guided into the bilge. But the compressor/pump needs some cooling and the outside heat exchanger certainly needs that.
In other words, if the counter or cabinet is not providing enough airflow, especially vertical airflow, it could at the least make your fridge work harder. And that “optional drain hose” is hopefully routed to your bilge or to your waste plumbing, preferably the bilge. If it’s not, you might want to get them to while it’s being warranty serviced.
Nikki with the headset is such a confident executive sailor of her new boat. Jason is a great mechanical problem solver. An awesome sailing team. Thank goodness for all of those back up engines. 1. Sails 2. Electric 3. Diesel 4. Regen from propellers 5. Could you tow with your dingy? Can you hoist the sails manually? It looks tough. If your electric wenches fail, is it sheer adrenaline that will keep you going? I'm still waiting on the dishwasher review. 😂 Blessings 🎉
I’m sorry you’re having some problems with the boat. Yet still, you’re able to show us the beauty around you. Love that. Just to back up your sponsor, one of my son’s was having some difficulties and was resistant to talking with someone about it. Thanks to channel sponsorship I heard about it and made the pitch to my son. When he saw the convenience and discount he decided to try it. He now agrees that it was the best bit of money spent and is feeling so much better. So thank you for normalizing the act of seeking help to get through things. It helps more people than you know. ❤❤
Your commitment to maintaining and improving everything around you is truly commendable. Taking the time for warranty work shows your dedication to ensuring everything runs smoothly. Your meticulous approach is inspiring. And I am Floating Village Life.
I'm guessing you wont see this but I'll give it a try. Different boat model/builder but same fridge and very similar issues. There is a way to reduce the time between defrost cycles. Need to enter config mode. Unfortunately I don't recall the exact steps so reach out to mnfg. This helped but in my case it was not enough. It is imperative you have sufficient ventilation behind the fridge. Despite the builder adding passive vents it has not been a solution. My next step is to add fans to the cavity behind the fridge to increase ventilation and to replace the fan on the condenser coil to something with more CFM. ( it is just a 120mm muffin fan, like on a PC) . Results are TBD. A hairdryer will reduce your down time to 10 minutes if you aim it at the fans in the lower compartment. Good Luck
Make sure it's thoroughly derfosted and then be absolutely certain that the defroster is draining. I've cleared a blockage on a couple of fridges and had them remain in service for years after that.
After the insanity of this past week. This was a pleasant mind cleanse. Thanks Capt. Nikki. 1st Mate / Chief Engineer Jason I feel your stress and pain for the upcoming gotta do work.
I liked your color choices when they were first revealed at the factory but now I'm liking them even more. Curiosity is such a good looking boat out in it's intended environment, wowww... (Those drone beauty shots.) Oh, and you guys are great too... 😉
Just wrote a comment of my own on this. Hopefully it is indeed just a head gasket issue and not a more sinister crack somewhere. I would have to assume it's covered under warranty but it's certainly not a good sign to have failure this early.
Love that boat and the options that you have for propulsion. That makes it a goanywhere boat, I normally not an electric motor person, but the way you guys have it, it works great, Keep exploring while you can, from an 84 year old that regrets not doing it.
Yikes, get somewhere for someone to check that engine before its ruined, thats the symptoms of a serious problem unfortunately. It seems alot of new high profile boats are suffering from major issues that are from bad installs.
Hey guys, loved the video. I like the idea of free diving but I just don't have the lungs for it. So I do scuba diving. Haven't been in a long time but hope to make another trip to Australia and dive the great barrier reef again. At 77 I have to be a little more careful than when I was younger. I always pay for one of the crew to be my guide, that way I get to see all of the best things because they know where everything is. Hope your hauling out and repairs are done quickly so you can get back on the water as soon as possible.
Optional Drain Hole. Maybe that means it can be used and connected to a Drain Hose if one is available during installation? To drain to bilge or overboard.
I agree with Joshua, that looks like rust, not oil. More than likely you got parts that were not clean, or maybe got wet. I'd personally try a flush and fill on the whole system.
Jason read my mind, I was just thinking since it’s so hot you should all jump in the water. 3 months went by fast just like this 23 1/2 minute video. Great drone shot of Curiosity with the black sails and I believe El Nido in the background. Joshua seems like a fascinating guy. Hope he heals quickly. Safe Travels Wynns
Another really cool episode! I always enjoy watching 😊 Good vibes for your (port?) Engine! You guys seem to always have a good time no matter what is going on. It's an inspiration to the rest of us. Thanks for letting me (virtually) tag along again 😊
Good to see you under sail again, those sails are magnificent. Would be interesting to know what was causing the very brown water, that level of brown is not normal in such a new engine. I guess like with every new boat there is going to be something that goes a little wrong. when you think about it, you are not just living in a home, your home carries with it the entire infrastructure of a city scaled down to fit into the boat. Power electrical and for locomotion, water, sewage and it's all got to be packed into something the floats. So a lot can go wrong. I have seen a few other new boats and it seems like at least your warrantee issues are not that bad at least compared to some of the issues I have seen recently. Looking forward to you next adventure that you share with us.
You’re spot on with the fridge problem but I doubt 2 hours will give it a full defrost. There will be an ice build up on the evaporator also this needs clearing to slow it to work properly and achieve the correct temperature. Pretty sure you will have a defrost heater or sensor failure
I would not top it with anything. It looks to be contaminated with engine oil which the typical culprit is a failed cylinder head gasket. That's why it's low, it's combining with the engine oil or getting burned off.
I echo previous comments, sunday morning eating breakfast and drinking Coffee with the Wynns this has been my ritual for years. Never change the upload schedule Jason and Nikki. love it!
Drain hole could be needing an update. Our fridge had a recall on the rubber valve that's attached to the drain whole. Rubber value was to small and would get clogged causing frost in our fridge creating issues. Changed the rubber valve and fridge was fixed for a bunch of years.
RESIDENTIAL FRIDGE user in a Class A motorhome here. It's a love/hate relationship. I am a full timer and have lived with this fridge since 2021. It's a 2014 coach. This is an honest to goodness residential Frigidaire Gallery 22 CU FT monster. Does it work great? Yes. Is it an energy hog? Also yes; 175 Ah per day out of the batteries. Of that, 75 Ah is for the defrost cycle; 50amp draw x 30 minutes every 8 hours. I've tried everything to defeat the auto defrost to no avail. It's smart enough to work around the timer I have it plugged into. Instead, I added more batteries and more solar. Now I don't have energy anxiety and I have made peace with the thing for now. BUT, when it croaks, I smaller, manual defrost 12V fridge will replace it. OH, and this sucker weighs 300lbs EMPTY. And it's installed in my big slide. (Yes, I have issues with a lot of things surrounding this fridge)
Hey guys!! Jo and I have been so busy we lost track of you for a bit. Love the new boat. We’ll have to catch up on videos. We got a Mooney and are skydiving a bunch. I’m working on my commercial rating now after getting my instrument rating last year. Still have the diesel pusher and love it. Be safe!
As a temporary fix for your fridge problem, you could kill power to it periodically through the day. It sounds like you have a low refrigerant charge, hence your frosting issue.
About the coolant issue. It looks like a symptom of a failed head gasket. There are many coolant passages in the engine in which it flows through to keep everything from overheating, when the gasket fails, it allows the coolant to mix with the engine oil through this gap and makes the "sludge" you are talking about. That's also why so much of it has disappeared, it is more than likely combined with the engine oil or getting burned off in combustion. I have a feeling if you inspect the oil, it will look similar to a peanut butter/caramel color. As I said it's most commonly related to the gasket between the cylinder head and the engine block, but could also be other gaskets or even a small crack somewhere in the engine itself (or a number of other things). I don't know much about your engine specifically, but I would certainly avoid running it at all if possible until further diagnosis and inspection, as the coolant and engine oil are both not going to be doing their job very well if they are mixed with the other.
That engine is probably burning that coolant, or it is leaking it somewhere else in the cooling system like the heat exchanger that you mentioned in the video. not to serious atm but could b a worse leak or burn later. As long as you keep it topped up you should be able to run it no problem!! love your videos!!
With coolant looking like a chocolate milk shake it could be engine oil mixing with coolant. That could destroy the engine very quickly. Keep a close eye on the engine oil to make sure it is not mixing with coolant somewhere inside the engine,
Here is me "just telling you where to go". Head North. Stop in at S.Korea (usually bypassed but SO under rated!) And then on to Japan. Decision made. Done! 😊
I had a problem with a freezer ones just like yours and was the thermistor the fix only cost me $8 in Amazon I was about to put away just for a little wire . Good luck with yours .😊
This isn't a simple, we need to defrost issue. The DFD error (and alarm that goes off every day) is letting us know there is something wrong with the circuit board and it is not automatically defrosting (which it is supposed to do). Vitafrigo is sending a new board which will hopefully fix the problem.
You can loose coolant from a blown head gasket. It happened to my wife’s BMW when she overheated it. The coolant leaked into the cylinders instead of the outer engine and would just burn off.
Well, I hope you guys get all your problems sorted out. I've met a woman who lives Bogo, just North of Cebu. And i'm going to be going there at the end of this month, so I'll be following you along and if you're still in the area.I would love to meet you guys so c u safe travel
Nice. Why raise sails anf shade the solar panels when there is negligible hope of wind. Apparently, one diesel motor propelling the boat while powering the other electric motor to do so as well and also possibly charging the batteries becomes a super efficient use of a diesel engine, which does better underload.
Finally some dive footage that puts air in my lungs. 3:25 - how does a fish with momentum manage to stop "instantly" with so little counter movement. A if it is tapping into spiritual force / electro magnetic. Dose it strike yous that the coral reefs look bland and colorless. Good to see plenty of fish.
Lightly used seems a good choice for a cruising cat. Problem is, you can't get that great new tech in an older boat. Luckily, you guys seem comfortable living on the bleeding edge of technology.
There is a temperature probe in the Evap coil that tells the control board when defrost is necessary. One of the plausible theories may be that the Fridge manufacturer had slow fan speeds or no fan speed during temp satisfaction so no humid was being removed during that period and then the coil gets hit with massive humidity in cool cycle and ices the coil that coupled with fact that you are already in a high humidity enviro (No Bueno Senor) All in the name of energy conservation. Theory #2: Manufactures used to direct condensate off of evap coils to a hot gas loop pan by the compressor to evap condensate but given the fact that in the past that was a common failure point for freon leaks and now that fridge is charged with and explosive fridgerant such as propane or butane those Hot gas loop evap pans have been eliminated entirely and some times the drain lines need to be directed somewhere and often become a forgotten detail or the unknown detail and over time as that tied off tube fills up with water and it backs up in the drain pan that water will freeze on the coil. The reason more than likely they want to send you the control board is they will change the parameters to have the fans run full time which will help but doesnt solve your drain line issue. FYI if the coil probe is bad the drain line and control board mitigation will not solve your ice up issue either. AND last but not least if they didnt account for heat rejection in there cabinet design you have boiled your oil and the compressor is running restricted very much like your previous boat just on a must shorter time scale. Dont under estimate how crappy things are being made these days...
The Coolant issues looks like you have either a Heat exchanger leak or a Blown Head Gasket blown between the Cylinder and the a Coolant Gallery. If the Later your engine temps will be elevated.
So with all that electricity, a boat like that should have two big box store top loading refrigerator/freezers for redundancy and convenience, air cooled with perhaps a vent overboard. Defrosting boat fridges is speeded up by using a hair dryer.
Have you considered stopping in Palau? Looks pretty unique and beautiful (at least on the internet, not been there, yet). Its like 650 miles SE of Cebu and you'd make some miles towards Raja Ampat, as well.
If you have lithium batteries you may have to install a 12v regulator to make 12v devices to work like it´s suppose to? ( also equivalent regulators if you have 24 v or 48 v ) Many devices need accurate current to operate correct.
Had the same fan problem with my new fridge. Oooh looks like a blown engine head gasket on that fancy priced boat. Looks like HH even more headaches than a Neel Trimaran.
This sail looked so relaxing!!! I have to say I'm quite jealous of Joshua getting to sail with you two!! I wish I had sailing or useful skills so I could be considered a useful person to have on board Curiosity!! LOL The extent of my useful skills would be to bring you all the chocolate, coffee, and tortilla chips you want from the States. But I'm not a bad cook. So there's that. LOL So I guess I'll just enjoy another Sunday morning with the Wynns from my comfy chair. Another great video. Thank you for taking us with you on your journeys!!!
I have missed your diving and underwater photography, but I also just watched Shark Week for the first time. AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!! Be safe out there ya hear?
The coolant is brown, and sludge present may have a headgascket leack as it is a sign of oil contamination. You need to flush the coolant system and check for a head gasket leak. You will need to do a compression test to see if the gasket has failed. My advice is not to run that engine unless necessary. If it is oil contaminated coolant, operating the engine could lead to engine failure in the worst case, component damage, and potential rebuild required. HOPEFULLY just a simple coolant flush is all that is needed.
The defrost circuit was the biggest failure item when I was working for GE as a refrigerator repair tech. BTW, some marine refrigerators have a pump to drain the condensation
Look at your oil to see if it looks milky. If you are not seeing it outside the block then its getting to the oil. Does the exhaust have a sweet smell(if you can smell it)?

I *finally* bought a boat, 12 meter, 3 cabins, and planning to live full time on it. Thanks for the inspiration both ❤
Your smiles. Your voices. Your love for life, people, and adventure brings me joy everytime. Thank for your amazing videos. 🌺
It's easy to really like you two, cause you really like each other. Thanks for the smiles as always.
i'm really glad you don't hide how much work this is. Cuz the scenery makes me want to run out and take on that lifestyle.
Love watching the Wynns on Sunday morning with my coffee.
That drone shot, as you were leaving....your boat, tiny against a backdrop of mountainous islands, dark skies.......beautiful!!!
What’s the final verdict on your beta engine.

Great explanation, I was thinking along the same lines that it might need more air circulation seeing how they are in fairly tropical conditions

Discoloration in the engine coolant....looks like oil contamination. Head gasket issue most likely.
Beat me to it. Losing coolant with no visible leak is almost always a head gasket/seal issue. I bet if they check the oil it will be milky as well.
I agree Check Oil. I destroyed a fine tractor by feeding to much antifreeze into the coolant
I'd be interested to see what the diagnosis is also. My bet is headgasket also
Same thought. Not good. Coolant is leaking and or burning off somewhere. Most likely culprit is the engine.
Just wrote a comment of my own on this. Hopefully it is indeed just a head gasket issue and not a more sinister crack somewhere. I would have to assume it's covered under warranty but it's certainly not a good sign to have failure this early.
Always enjoy the episodes when you have crew. Especially when they are learning and studying.
I was going to add a similar comment, your episodes are richer with extra folks involved. Love you both.
I don’t mind the advertisements. The quality of your content makes it worth it. Thank you

Mrs. Wynn's wardrobe was particularly aesthetically pleasing in this episode.
Your catcall is very tastefully worded. It's much classier than most of the others. Naughty without being vulgar. Exemplary.
Here here! Always classy..
Ew creep

Can't believe it's been 3 months already. Crazy how time just flies.
My thoughts exactly. I’m thinking it has been more like three weeks!! 😂😂
17:59 meeting people in places is the nomadic life-style i enjoy

i was stationed in subic in 1970s-till around 1983 last stay love it there have a great stay the people are great
Nikki is a significant source of rising sea water temperature.
I bought a quality 4-5 day cooler incase the RV's fridge/freezer breaks down, it's mainly for pricy items in freezer.
I love you folks. Keep being Wynners.
It's good that you have a warranty hope you get everything fixed. My daughter's fridge makes that noise, so your not the only one.

Next destination, Japan?!?
Awesome sailing, beautiful islands and friendly locals...and the food !!!
North of Cebu is Cantanduanes. Beautiful island to explore and visit. Especially the Mall.🎉
It’s a Jawfish. I saw them diving in the Philippines. They are much bigger than the ones you see in the Caribbean. And they are a green color!

Some coolants don't mix, so if you're not sure what one is in it, only top it up with water until you find out.

It sounds like you have a low refrigerant charge, hence your frosting issue.
you guys are really amazing wonderful people. thanks for going and sharing. love from cape town, ddm
I’ve been planning a trip to cebu in November so I’m looking forward to seeing more of your adventures in the Philippines.
I like the Ruuvi sensors. They will bluetooth to a cerbo gx from victron.
Nikki your top knot is missing a bone for the Flintstone look. Fair Winds 😎
Another great video, thank you.😊
In the tropics fridge icing up will always be an issue due to humidity. You should set up a schedule for defrosting.
Nice video episode. Nice spicy shrimp dinner at the end - definitely needed a good chilled beer with that!
Well, I hope you guys get all your problems sorted out. I've met a woman who lives Bogo, just North of Cebu. And i'm going to be going there at the end of this month, so I'll be following you along and if you're still in the area.I would love to meet you guys so c u safe travel
Good luck and God's blessings.
Nice. Why raise sails anf shade the solar panels when there is negligible hope of wind.
Apparently, one diesel motor propelling the boat while powering the other electric motor to do so as well and also possibly charging the batteries becomes a super efficient use of a diesel engine, which does better underload.
Best BetterHelp advertisement ever!
Beautiful location! Have you seen what the folks at @TravelSketch have been going through! You definitely picked a better manufacturer! All the best!
0:42 Love the swim suit !
Came here to see if anyone knew what brand that suit was. 😂
@@Ed03376 Ask Jason I think he's the Fashion expert. LOL Nickie knows
I can tell you have experience in this area..
@@MrDonJBerg it's all part of the wef we will own nothing eat bugs and be happy cabal this is being done to us with intention on a global scale

@user-dh6bj2me5p ignorance is bliss...right?...short enough for ya pumpkin?
@@AndrewBlacker-t1d I did😁
The Coolant issues looks like you have either a Heat exchanger leak or a Blown Head Gasket blown between the Cylinder and the a Coolant Gallery. If the Later your engine temps will be elevated.
For the Algo : Loving the white sun glasses Nikki.
Nikki reminds me of the Big Screen in Center Field at Fenway Park when she wears those shades! I still love her and Jason though. Blessings all
That temp/humidity sensor wll be great for my Humidor!
Do you know the brand of that device?
Small residential fridge like they use in a dorm room might work
So with all that electricity, a boat like that should have two big box store top loading refrigerator/freezers for redundancy and convenience, air cooled with perhaps a vent overboard.
Tell the AME there is another one watching from the home of Lycoming Engines. But, we are called A&P, I.A. here. 42 years of that and retired.
So do we get an update on the cooling system in the next episode. Inquiring minds want to know. Keep the goods stuff coming.
If you have lithium batteries you may have to install a 12v regulator to make 12v devices to work like it´s suppose to? ( also equivalent regulators if you have 24 v or 48 v )
Many devices need accurate current to operate correct.
Had the same fan problem with my new fridge. Oooh looks like a blown engine head gasket on that fancy priced boat. Looks like HH even more headaches than a Neel Trimaran.
So how did you miss where the mechanical engineer on board clearly said NOT THE HEAD GASKET as the coolant was not milky indicating oil contamination?
Love the palm long sleeve swimsuit!!!
What make is that swimsuit and where did you get it? Absolutely stunning on you!
My guess would be a leaking heat exchanger....coolant out and salt water in. The dark colour looks like rust
How beautiful! I love your cinematography!
Ahhh nice your in Palawan... such a beautiful spot! I do love Cebu... hopefully you will get everything fixed there...
Hey guys, could you please post the link to those fridge sensors? They sound like an awesome idea!
