WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity.
We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.
Things We're Most Curious About...
GETTING OFF-GRID
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.
TALKING TO STRANGERS
People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment.
Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving.
ALTERNATIVE LIVING
These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Creative, unique and inspiring people who challenge our ideas of home and community.
Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity

Fun fact, we've never been to the Marshal Islands or Bikini…but now we really, really want to sail there. Get a year supply of vitamin D3+K2 & 5 travel packs FREE with your first purchase: drinkAG1.com/gonewiththewynns
@Alan-sp8lgimagine white knighting for people who couldn't care less about you, dodge taxes, makes a preemptive video about it, diffuse responsibility by roping in other experts so people wouldn't constantly call them out on it and schill you overpriced green juice like the good little consumer you are.
They make it so complicated because they need an easy way to shut down sailors that cause problems. If your out on the open water, just know that we live in a very small world. An American being rude to a waiter while in another part of the world can start the process of shutting you down. You will start to notice yourself getting cancelled. The best way to steer clear of any problems is not drink alcohol while out in public and be nice to everyone even if they are being rude to you. Always keep your phone on you, and know the recorders are always on. If you need to drink alcohol only do it while on your vessel. Otherwise, people need to remember that most people are not going to be happy that your a wealthy American with a yacht or boat.
If they were REASONABLE taxes, no one would bother dodging them. How is it reasonable to tax someone $100,000 on a boat that has never even been to your government’s territorial waters?!? Just because the people who own the boat still call Texas our “home port” doesn’t mean the boat has to call it home. Taxes are supposed to fund benefits for people in the locality that does the taxing. Curiosity may never end its entire existence be within sight of USA or Texan waters.
Anyway, I don’t know why I’m trying to bother to explain reality to someone on the Internet. Have a nice life. 😝 I shall go sailing in Texas! ⛵️🌅
@@ckeilahI would kind of agree with you if they registered it in a place they do sail but thry haven't even been to the Marshall Islands. It's a tax dodge, plain and simple. You can think that's a good thing if you want but if we hold others to tax-dodging rebuke, we should hold everyone accountable. Everything else is just cope. Be well.
Every action has consequences. Sure they might be saving money, but now their vessel is registered to a country that has a government that will more than likely never respond to them if they need help. Again, all the laws are complicated and put into place as a way of ultimately having control over one’s property if they break laws, cause problems, and so on. People need to be very careful, all the people that control the waters are sitting at home, many are watching as everyone is living their dream of sailing the world. Something they can never afford. You don’t want to get cancelled because you were drunk in public or rude to a shitty waiter.
This is the only time I've seen a sailing channel address this issue. Just as important you mentioned having a CPA and Tax Attorney on board so to speak. That's a first too. Thanks!
Because not many new foreign boat builds. Most people buy a boat already built and registered. VERY few people face this, including most people buying sailboats. When you go to a boat show or a dealer and buy a boat it’s already registered. As soon as that boat comes into the country to a dealer or to a boat show all of that has been done. For most people, the question is not what country to register the boat but what state.
John Kerry got busted for this because he has a yacht that he keeps registered in a different state to avoid paying sales taxes. It’s also in another state that has lower insurance and lower annual property taxes. But of course he wants your tax dollars to pay for a war that’s not needed that America started in Ukraine and lots of other bullshit!
Typical liberal hypocrisy. They will avoid taxes anyway they can but they want you to be taxed to pay for all the crap that they like.
Most outstanding advice
It's disgusting how we have to become attorneys and tax professionals to exist in the world. Kick rocks gov!! 😒
How come watching their weekly vlog ALWAYS flies by like a New York minute ?
They are the best sailing channel on RUclips, period
It's a Bikini minute now.
Totally agree except for one thing. Not only does time go by really fast but I start dreaming of sailing the world in a cat again.
If you want to watch a proper sailing channel try No Bullshit Just Sailing with Erik who's Norwegian. Now that nation grows sailors who can do it in the most difficult sea conditions, it's in their DNA, going back over a thousand years.
@@ginnypeckham4022 I am not sure it is really fair to make a comment in someone's channel that another channel is better for some reason when this couple have shown over time they have a good family oriented perspective and are just a nice family overall. Perhaps it was not intentional but I feel you could have worded your comment better. The Wynns are definitely trying to put out useful information to help others which many people may not have thought of including myself.
Honestly it's really not.
The best one is the dude with a solar boat.
These dudes are just hipsters.
So many sailing channels on sailing adventures , boat repairs , boat builds , boat "buyer's remorse" ; then there's #GoneWithTheWynns that talks about one of the most important aspects of boating .
AND, made it interesting to someone who sails but is not a world cruiser and does not own a boat :)
Except, they rarely SAIL anywhere and have no clue of seamanship.
these two and zatara are by far my favorites.
"We picked up our boat in Asia and we plan on cruising here for at least a couple years." Excellent.
So many hoops to go through living on a boat. I'll never go sailing; but being educated on the things you do to provide content is actually entertaining.
Do you own a house? A boat is not much different. A bit, yes, because you're traveling between countries but on the other hand, you don't have to deal with HOAs... ;-)
It's really only complicated if outside the US. If you are American and only sail around America, which is what probably 98 percent of American sail boat owners do, then it's no more complicated than owning any other boat or camper/RV, etc.
@@nedhill1242 but then you have either to deal with importing the boat or have it done by a local agent. Both of which are going to add quite a bit of cost to the boat.
Also I think the subject was at least in part, cruising. Why restrict yourself to just your backyard? There's a whole world out there!
I'm not buying a boat, or needing to be entertained. I just stayed to the end because you are reasonably likeable people
I’d watch you two if you talked about the inside of a tennis ball. Love the show.
Coffee with the Wynns is the very best way to start a Sunday. Love and light from the East Coast of Canada♥
yep west coast of Oregon the same thing
Yep! This information will never pertain to me but who cares. Love the Wynns.
My Sunday ritual as well!
Well done - you made the right choice. Turns out that no one, not even leftists, like paying taxes and complying with all those far left extremist rules created by little bureaucrat dictators. Go figure that avoiding hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes is a goal, as it should be, for you guys. Welcome to the club. Just make sure you are consistent in the way that you vote as you get what you vote for and they will no doubt be creating rules to force you to pay anyway. Biden is hard at work trying to take what is yours.
Every Sunday!
Not buying a boat, but very interesting. You two have the best personalities in the cruising world. Love you guys and never miss a video.
Watching from Annapolis! Nice to hear my beautiful hometown mentioned in the video. We like to call ourselves “the sailing capital.” Lots of boats here :-)
Coffee and Sunday morning sailing school with the Wynn's.
It's a bit like a Vermont or Colorado license plate. Once you get one you don't want to give it up.
This guy sounds like he knows his boat paperwork law.
Very cool, I was very curious about why you flagged your boat in the Marshall Islands. Now I understand. There is a lot more to cruising than most of us realized.
Thanks for taking me along again! 😊
I just think having "Bikini" on the back of your boat looks really cool.
Even if the actual Atoll is a bit radioactive still... LOL
@@redwolfexr Oh, I think that adds to it. Don't get me wrong, that is a pretty horrible thing that happened to the inhabitants of those islands, but the whole "Atomic Age" is associated. So, the trifecta of Nikki in a Bikini, the one simple word, Bikini, and that it has all that baggage of those nuclear tests on Bikini atoll behind it.
The other factor to consider is that many insurers are dropping multihulls altogether as they trim their risk profiles in response to extreme weather events etc. We asked five insurers for quotes on multihulls insurance and only one even replied, and even the previous insurer of the boat was happy to get it off their books despite us having no claims ever. So getting a flag that increases your chances of even getting insurance is a really big deal!!!
Thank you so much for the explanation. I watched to the end and am not currently buying a boat and still found the video very interesting. I always wondered why so many boats had that Marshal Islands as their registry... And thanks to you both, now I know.
Very informative! Interestingly enough, we just went through this with our new cat coming our of La Rochelle France. We don't plan on our boat ever seeing the USA and if it does, get a cruising permit, DONE! And we too found that flagging had a significant impact on our ability to get insurance. We went with the Island of Jersey, a British Ensign. 10 year registration, free 90 day provisional, oh and it saved us THOUSANDS on insurance.... This episode really confirmed what we just went through, Good job!
florida does not require boat insurance ... why didnt you chose florida .. it also has a nice looking state flag as well..lol also.. in usa you dont need paperwork for any fire arm what so ever.. i happen to like that boating l;aw...lol
@tarpanc34 Florida is still part of the U.S.A. last I checked, so all the problems for obtaining insurance for a vessel sailing outside U.S. waters come right back.
Curious Minion
@@gonewiththewynns if my state says i dont need insurance in my country then every country has to accept the laws of my home country and state dont that make sence..
@@tarpanc34I would guess it's something along the lines of you still needing an insurance if you want to dock anywhere other then there. Take driving on the roads in the UK for example, just because at your state you drive on the right, you won't get very far that way when you are there :P
@@tarpanc34 Home country laws doesn't mean a country you are visiting has to accept those laws. Ie, they just deny entry. Australasia, for example.
I'm watching from central Florida. I'm not planning on buying a boat, I can't swim, and I can't find anyone else who talks about boat insurance which makes the subject informative; I wouldn't say I like water, but I still find your videos entertaining.
Yes, you have an amazing ability of storytelling that can make any subject interesting! I wasn’t really questioning why you registered in Bikini, but good to know!
Incredibly informative, similar to an indepth crash course in licensing/registering a boat! We are thinking of using our boat similar to you, but more in line with a B&B type charter. Many times we have researched and used your blogs to help guide us in using global healthcare, registering the boat, marine friendly equipment, and the importance of embracing being grateful. Thank you so much for all that you share. We've watched you since your early RV days:) Best wishes for many new adventures to come. 💖
This was fascinating. I had been curious about this!
Always interesting even though the topics are so varied (and not so obviously things to expect) - you Always do a good job of educating & entertaining! Please don't stop
I’ll tell ya 16 minutes just flew by. I hope next week is an hour long video as I can’t get enough. I so enjoy and look forward to Sunday mornings with the Wynn’s. Thank you for explaining the registration process. Ever since you brought it up I was curious and interested in why you picked Bikini. Safe travels
Jason must have had a BERY long talk with your lawyer because he started the talk clean shaven and had a good growth by the end but was still in the same shirt! Very informative video. I’ve seen soooooo many Delaware registered boats in Turkey!
Never a dull moment with the Wynns!
1:19 TAXES! That's it.
Exactly
One thing that comes under the "taxes" banner is the increased US tariffs on Chinese built luxury items. I heard about it during an ASA class.
What is the US tariff on Chinese boats? Is it 25% like many other products?
I made it through the entire video because I watch all your videos, not just the “ones that appeal to me”. I enjoy them all! Nikki, I’m hoping one day you’ll make a cookbook as I love the things you cook!
Many thanks for taking the time to answer some questions many of us have and not losing us! Fair winds and gently following seas. May your blessings be gathered in the wind.
Goodmorning guys, Sundays are ways better with you.
I totally agree 😍
The back end of your boat is awesome.
Congratulations on that Beautiful new boat! Enjoy!
Would watch paint dry with y'all and have. Not sure how long I have been watching but THANK YOU! my Mom and I went to Whitchurch this Spring and cruised the Llangollen Canal. Watching that series helped decide where we spent our trip. It was delightful and ABC Boat Hire was great to work with. THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! THANK YOU !
What a cool video and such a valuable contribution to the cruising community. I am not a cruiser but I am an avid boater in the US. Loved listening to your attorney provide new information. I love learning new things and this was something I’ve never heard anyone talk about before. This is great seeing your yacht purchasing series come full circle. It’s almost like your channel has gotten a renewal for a new season. Cannot wait to see all the fun videos to come with the new cat. I hope Ben and Ashley get their new boat going soon as well. I love the whole process. Happy sailing to you both!
I really LOVE watching your subscriber numbers go up and UP and UP!! Makes me happy! I'm an OG all the way from when you guys were touring in an RV! What changes you've encountered!!
Not buying a boat. Not even a sailor. I have been on cruise ships and water ferries and a few cabin cruisers on a lake. I am curious about why and how people do what they do. I am mobility challenged now, all my life but only past 15 yrs I need walking aids, 2 canes now. I used to hike, repel, snow ski and back in school I even ran track. I haven't "missed out" at all. I have found great joy in watching Nikki and Jason and two other sailing families. Great wholesome (except these two and all the caulking innuendoes' 🤣) I am grateful for this platform, where many extremely talented and/or motivating people share a part of their life. As travel has become very challenging, this is a good alternative,
Very interesting. As a land based creature, I am curious to know how much insurance costs (rough range is fine) and what does it cover?
My wife and I retired. In an abundance of caution, we got our home owners insurance reviewed and ensured we had replacement value coverage. Home is the bulk of our net worth and now retired it was essential we did not lose it. OMG, was that a good move. My next door neighbor replaced their home with a bigger one. In the process they managed to mess up our property. Our insurance has been working for 5 years and $millions to fix it. The replacement value rider forced them to restore even though it was a tough job. Whew!
Landlubber here but found your explanation very interesting. Now I’ll go look for why it says Bikini and not Marshall.
Bikini is an island in the Marshal Islands, like O'ahu is one of the Hawaiian Islands.
Curious Minion
Bikini is the name of the home port. A country may have many different ports. Often the port name is the same as a city near the port. A USA boat will show Boston, or San Francisco, or Miami, etc, and doesn't show USA. They will fly a USA flag to show country of registry, not print the country name on the transom.
Looking good Eugene! 😉 We're registered to the Marshall Islands as well - people either get a giggle and think it's a joke when they see the home port is Bikini or they think the boat name is "Liger Bikini". The register themselves have been excellent to work with, we go through the Swiss office and they've been extremely helpful.
One of the best informational videos you have put out in a while. We still have about 15 years until retirement, but planning ahead by learning and getting as much information so when the time comes we can jump right in.
Been a long time follower and subscriber, and love when good and accurate info is shared.
Thanks again. Be safe.
WARNING! A single-handler sailor enroute from Mexico to me here in Guam had to stopover in the Marshalls for provisioning. He decided to get a hotel room his first night in to get properly showered and rested, only to have his boat burglarized by locals, possibly involving govm't officials. He lost a lot of personal property including cash, computer, camera gear and more. He thinks govm't officials were involved because they initially suspected him of smuggling and searched his vessel twice and they knew exactly where everything was located, including the safe, which was ripped out. 🤨
You always do an exceptional job of making it entertaining, that’s why we watch.
Times have flown by. Remember When Jason was so proud of his TransAm sports car trying to impress Nikki in his Teaxan youth. Now he's navigating an expensive high tech yacht purchase to sail the World again. Amazing! Very blessed!
Shoot I must've missed that episode.
@@BucketlistretreatsI have to correct this. Jason owned a Camaro z28 T top. At 19y.o. when he meet Nikki. Watch the episode "How We Became The Wynns (not just a road trip 1) where they shared about the anniversary and how they met. So cute!
@Bucketlistretreats It is a really fun series of 3 vids on how they got to where they are now. Part 1 starts here ruclips.net/video/OCDGeSVvXPY/видео.html so check it out!

And his long hair becomes his tan. Good job guys. Thanks for the continuing education.
I was curious about this, thanks for the info!
Amazing. Thanks, guys! I didn’t know what I didn’t know. Always interesting to get an education on the “business end” of boating.
Thank you for this episode ❤.
All of this info is helping me in my creative works...
Thank you!
thanks for the info can't wait for you doing more sailing
You guys always brighten my day! Thanks also for all the great information ❤
While watching this episode. I couldn’t get out of my head Sponge Bob and Patrick coming to the rescue. My dog thought I was crazy. Well more crazy than usual. Happy sailing.
Honestly this was really educational. You're the only channel ive seen cover this so in depth.
Another great video. Sundays with the Wynns are always enjoyable.
That was extremely interesting. I do not own a boat and will never own a boat but the issues of insurance and taxation can affect so much if you do. I think people make the mistake of thinking you can buy a boat and go anywhere you want. Just watching over the years as you have travelled into foreign countries has certainly opened my eyes that people who do can't just go anywhere they want without the proper permits or paying the fees and getting permission to do so. Thanks for taking us along and sharing the information.
LOVED the details - Please give more of these
You kept this very interesting! Thank you for sharing!
Hi, Thank you for the knowledge and information. Fair winds !
Very helpful information, well done, as always.
Thank you for the info, you guys rock!
Great info. Jason asked all the important questions.
Great information! Thank you for sharing
Wow, that makes complete sense! Thanks for explaining in detail, it was interesting.
SUPER important information. THANKS FOR SHARING, INCLUDING YOUR ATTORNEY AND INSURANCE PERSON.
Thank you for this valuable video content. Much appreciated. Have a great time
Thank you! This was a great overview of some questions I’ve always had!! Great vid! Also, great curls Jason! :)
Thanks for the info! Super helpful; I always wondered how that worked. I would LOVE an episode on your electronics setup (eg B&G, Autopilots, AIS, Radar, VHFs, Jason’s big screen at the nav desk, etc)… so many choices it would be great to see how you made your choices and how it all is integrated (or not).
So interesting! Thanks for sharing!
I have zero intention of buying a boat, or doing what you do. However, I find your videos very informative and interesting. Great job!
Valuable info! Thank you guys!
This is exactly the kind of episodes I look for. Thank you.
I love how neat and clean your boat is!
Great video!! Great explanations!! (Not boring at all). Your HH44 really shines in the background. The fit and finish is exceptional!!! Can't wait for next week's video!! I'm hooked!!!
Really informative video. Thanks.
Super informative! Great video!
You're both always a plethora of information. Thanks you guys. 😘
Great video, had lots of questions about this. Still do, but this helped! Thank you.

This was VERY interesting. Thank you so very much.
Xcellent info and a well thought out presentation....I wasn't aware of all the ins and outs of ocean travel but I now have a better understanding of the process and why you made the decisions you did.....Sea Ya!!😎
I stayed through the whole video even though I don't have a boat cuz you guys are interesting and fun to watch. far ahead of the travel channels that are just a cycle of lunch, happy hour, dinner, and the late night bar scene
Fascinating, and you did a wonderful job of explaining the nuances.
Absolutely helpt a lot, and good advice, keep up the good work.
This was fantastic. I’ll be coming back to this (and using your attorney) when the time comes!
