When u swim butterfly in public pool every body looks at you and say from inside..wow I wish I could swim like tht. I love this style but its the most energy consuming one
Many years back, I started swimming because I loved this butterfly stroke. Many years later, I can fly and I make sure I fly at least 50m per session. I swim about 2-3 times weekly. Love it.
I've tried this swimming style firstly today and it was not easy but enjoying. Yes it was only for the short distances, but the feeling of muscles is incredible. Will stick with it and polish my technique.
I'm 72 and a salty pool just opened next to my house. I always wanted to learn butterfly and like everything else I always use youtube to improve myself! The butterfly is difficult and exhausting; however, I'm determined to get it eventually. Luckily my body is still flexible and my arms are strong so I do have the necessary tools to achieve my goal, I hope.
@@MicahandModesta The first week of my trying the butterfly, I started to have pains in my left shoulder. I waited a week for the pain to subside. I learned that the cause of my pain could come from a poor technique. (I was pushing the water as soon as my arms came out of the water instead of waiting for them to get together and then push the water under me.) This did help me to perform the ABC butterfly, without any pain. However, according to my daughter, my butterfly looks awful, more like a toad dying in the water (sic) while my son (probably polite) thought my butterfly is fine. In spite of all criticisms, I decided to keep on doing the butterfly, just because I love the way it feels physically, more than any other strokes. Perhaps I don't have enough strength to get my head out of the water, but I do have the flexibility. Thanks for asking my experiences regarding the butterfly. I wish I had tried this stroke when I was young, but I was too busy--only retirement gave me the opportunity to swim at whim. :-)
@@MicahandModesta Yesterday, I started to understand exactly how to the butterfly for which I'm proud. When I was walking with my daughter, she noticed my back was bumpy! I asked her if it was the neck, which would have been a bad sign. She told me no, it was the blades of my shoulders. I immediately realized that swimming did reinforce the shoulder-blade muscles; the same as it does to most professional swimmers. When I was a teenager, I studied trapeze in the Cirque d'Hiver in Paris. My husband used to tell me that my back looked like a young boy doing lots of sport. Perhaps my back muscles are going back to their yesteryear. :-)
@@LaFanfanTulipe so happy for you maya! My grandfather taught me how to swim backstroke when he was 65 (I was 6 at the time) so it's never too late to learn. Butterfly is a majestic stroke and the most elegant out of all. I used to be a competitive butterfly swimmer in high school and it was actually the last stroke that I learned since I was reluctant to, due to the sheer difficulty and my bad experience with it (I had been swimming for well over 8 years at that point with many half-hearted, failed attempts at butterfly). In my opinion, the kick is an overlooked aspect of butterfly and if you learn how to do it correctly, you can greatly increase your speed and reduce the energy you spend while doing it as it helps to improve balance too. Wish you good luck with your swimming endeavours!
The kicking was hard imo, Iv’e been doing the stroke for a while and realized that all u have to do is bob ur head for the kicks. Still have to get my timing down tho, thats super hard asf.
1. Always maintain horizontal position. 2. Try not to dive too deep. Stay on surface 3. The movement you do with your hands is dragging yourself ahead through the water. Concentrate on this movement. 4. Stick feet together. Dolphin kick is a must. With a time you will dolphine kick intuitively. 5. When you get your face up you slow down, so inhale on every 2-nd or 3-d stroke. In this video the swimmer breathes on every stroke. That's exhausting.
Oh my god anyone who goes to swim at public pools will understand this comment to their very core. Since I’m so bad at butterfly I just get out my leg and arm flippers and do a super fast freestyle 😂😂
One of my classmates at the university went to the swimming pool with me for the first time in his life. He didn't know swimming. It took him first half an hour to figure out how to float from drowning. After that, at the 2nd half of the one hour session, he butterfly-ed very well. We can't compare with some genius. We can only be jealous of them.
TORTURE! We all have weaknesses - fly and backstroke were mine. I respect anyone who swims this well (and anyone who doesn't swim it well but still chooses to). What a great time I had as a swimmer. What a wonderful skill. I always felt amazing, almost high, after swim practice - the mental clarity from the endorphins and squeaky clean feeling from, essentially, swimming in diluted bleach for 2-hours lol!
fun? Every time I have to do 200m of this thing I fuck up my whole other swimming schedule for the day. Especially if there is hardly any break between the 25m stops
I think breaststroke is the most difficult. I still remember I took a long time to master butterfly. The most difficult part is the timing and how smooth is the undulation movement. Undulation movement starts from the head to the bottom (not just dolphin kick). The rhythm of the undulation movement really takes time to do it right. In breaststroke, there are similarities with butterfly, once the hand is finished in breaststroke, the hip actually slightly floats. The hips floats up also in butterfly. Breaststroke hands are very difficult to do it right, it might be more exhausting to swim than butterfly. One of the drill I used in breaststroke is actually breaststroke hands and butterfly legs

If you guys could create a video focused more on timing of the kick rather than the mechanics, that would be awesome. Timing (when to use the kick) is what everyone gets stuck on learning and it’s important to maintain momentum. Also the kick is used to help drive the body forward not necessarily to get the body out of the water. The arms naturally carry the upper body more than the legs do. The kick drives the body forward as we pull out of the water and the second kick drives the body forward as our arms re-enter the water.
Are your abs suppose to be sore?! I practiced this for 1hr along with egg beater and my body was SORE LOL! I just learned to swim at 44yrs old and I’m so proud of myself. I just learned elementary back stroke which I love. Believe it or not I watched a 1hr video 4 times and practice my breathing under water in the tub. It took me 5hrs in the pool but I FINALLY learned to float on my back and stomach, freestyle, swim on my stomach and back with just my legs, and backstroke. Now I’m learning to breathe with freestyle, breaststroke, tread water and butterfly. Breaststroke is HARD especially if your not in shape like me LOL. I’m determined to learn it though and get over my fear of the deep end LOL. I think if I learn to tread water I’ll feel more confident. I’m 5’6 but being in 6ft deep water doesn’t bother me it’s 7 or more because I’ll have a long way to go if I run out of breathe! Yes I know I can just float if I get scared it’s just the thought I guess. I’ve learned you’re never to old to learn something new. Very few people in my family know how to swim. My daughter is 8 and she can be in the pool for HOURS! She just learned as well and can swim in the deep end LOL. Now I REALLY got to get over my fear.

I can do 4 laps freestyle now after 5 months of almost daily training so I know this will be tough but it looks fun . Also in the summer in Florida swimming is the only exercise I can take , walking or biking is tough to do in the summer .
"your thumbs should be almost touching as your hands enter the water?" Most coaches say your hands should enter the water at 11 and 1 o'clock (shoulder width). Wondering which is correct?
Know this vid's over a year old, but letting you know regardless for that algorithm metric. Going from couch to fit (pandemic pudge crept up). Started out with some 300m freestyle workouts, mixed in back stroke after, all while gnawing on old memories of swim technique. 300m turned into 3500m quickly every other day, "rest" days are 600m with focus on technique and exploration of styles/drills. Butterfly progress has been slow. Not in the same shape I was in highschool, my timing's wonky (watching this to get kick and arm timing visualization) so I keep screwing up about 15m in and repeating to get the feeling correct. First drills were wall kickoff + arrow + 5-6 dolphin kicks (repeated 30x). Next was focus on arms, entering/exiting correctly, proper stroke 2-3x (repeated 15-20x). Adding in breaths and syncing atm, working towards 25m sets, will add flips for 50m sets when comfortable (gym 25m lap pool), but I'm still a bit off. Biggest things so far have been: -26lbs dropped (at that inbetween for fat loss and muscle gain right now) -metabolism respiked... hard. Hunger 24/7 despite nutrition rebalance and filling foods, trying very hard not to eat everything available. As well as body heat, I've turned back into a human furnace, making sleep difficult (literally nude with only a thin sheet, constantly considering concrete/tile floor over bed, still wake up 2x a night hot and hungry.) -muscle tone/definition/cut. Thighs/calves/forearms/shoulders/neck always been muscly bricks, but they're still toning up. Losing my ass again (always do, from bubble to angry looking muscly, sigh.) V-line's coming back. Shoulderblades/upper and mid back popping up again. Stomach's flattening a little. Main reason for switching is for upper arms, chest, and stomach.
I have a swim meet today and I have to do a 10, fly in an event and this is my first time doing that in an event and I’m so excited, I just had 5 practices, to practice fly.
The video has been very helpful in learning this tech of swimming. It helped me alot to swim efficiently and smoothly. Thanks for the video and big thumbs up
People say im fast learner but I really dont know it took me 4 days to learn freestyle breast and back stroke treading water from nothing and today im going to try this out and share the results💪🏻
I tried butterfly stroke today, then I realised my hands and legs did not have enough strength to push my head out of the water. I could not do the third stroke. Now that I have learned a few tricks here, i will apply them the next time.
Butterfly is all about timing and the arms. You can use fins all year but at some point your going to have to take them off. Deeper butterfly is the way to go too
Lmao I did the exact same thing the first time I had to do the 50 fly, I just watched a ton of youtube videos on the bus on the way there to try to prepare myself. Now though it's one of my favorite strokes, once you get the feel for it and can do it relatively fast during a race it's such a surreal feeling and it feels almost as if ur actually flying (kinda).

Yesterday at a swim meet for high school I swam butterfly for the first time competitively I placed third and did not get DQ but it was so exhausting my arms felt limp afterwards but this just makes me wanna swim it more and get so much better at it
Today i had a "alumni meet" where we just messed around and had events that you got to choose what you did, and you could do as many events as you wanted, and i chose to do the 50 back, breast, free, and fly, with all those events being back to back almost, and i somehow managed to actually do a good fly event though it was one of the last ones i did
What do you call that kind of butterfly that the arms goes up-and-down instead of holding high like phelp? At the same time Undulate with much bigger amplitude.
Do you include butterfly in your swim training? Leave us a comment!

Biggest things so far have been:
-26lbs dropped (at that inbetween for fat loss and muscle gain right now)
-metabolism respiked... hard. Hunger 24/7 despite nutrition rebalance and filling foods, trying very hard not to eat everything available. As well as body heat, I've turned back into a human furnace, making sleep difficult (literally nude with only a thin sheet, constantly considering concrete/tile floor over bed, still wake up 2x a night hot and hungry.)
-muscle tone/definition/cut.
Thighs/calves/forearms/shoulders/neck always been muscly bricks, but they're still toning up.
Losing my ass again (always do, from bubble to angry looking muscly, sigh.)
V-line's coming back. Shoulderblades/upper and mid back popping up again.
Stomach's flattening a little.
Main reason for switching is for upper arms, chest, and stomach.
this helps with my butterfly i always hit the water
:)
Thanks bro I just won my school gala event with this tutorial. I was the only one but a win is a win 💪🔥😤
I have a swim meet today and I have to do a 10, fly in an event and this is my first time doing that in an event and I’m so excited, I just had 5 practices, to practice fly.
The video has been very helpful in learning this tech of swimming. It helped me alot to swim efficiently and smoothly. Thanks for the video and big thumbs up
I love butterfly now.
Since i've manage to perfect the arm technique.
Even timing is nearly perfect so i might need work on that.
cinematic masterpiece
This is the most difficult style for me. I just learn and try it today
I swam butterfly first time today and the lifeguard gave me some instruction and he said I was good. I’m nearly 64! 😅
Thank you for making me good at fly love from philipines❤
I’m trying to teach a friend how to do butterfly. This helped so much since it’s complicated to explain
Butterfly is my favourite swimming stroke
I have yet to learn this stroke it was terribly hard to try and learn as a kid.
This is so hard especially trying to do it in the sea
beautiful stroke
Thanks for the video~ I always wanted to learn this and I was able to today xD
Great video, very well explained. I'm training butterfly, I'm already synchronizing well, but my stroke is still not perfect.
Hi this is January I love to swim butterfly but I have trouble can you help me
Really so good 😊..I learn this video to my swimming 👍.. Thank you.
I always swallow the water while practicing this
me too lmao
Discovered dolphin kick by trial, looks like I’ve found my complimentary pull
Worked. Thanks!
Me: has terrible back elasticity
Also me: I am gonna learn how to swim butterfly😂
I watched this so many times and I made the swim team and we won the championship 2 days ago
I always get the timing for the breaths wrong
How tf
Oydpuf aphfoco
I inhale when I'm in the water and exhale when I'm out of the water,..right?
Exhalation is inside in water??
I'm gonna break Michael Phelps's Record ⏺️🤘🏻🙏🏻💪🏻
Thank you so much I have a lot I am a first time it’s my first day to swim I’m sorry ridiculous English in Spanish but I am so glad you’re happy😍
Thanks for teaching me butterfly
No problem!
Thank you for this post it help me so much!
You're so welcome!
This is an alpha way to swim
i’m just watching this for my swim class
People say im fast learner but I really dont know it took me 4 days to learn freestyle breast and back stroke treading water from nothing and today im going to try this out and share the results💪🏻
wow this worked
Thanks for this it helped me alot
Pro tip, first master breast strokes swimming (the frog technique as someone noted) and then transition into learning butterfly.
Does this mean I can go straight from breaststroke to butterfly without first learning freestyle (crawl)?
I tried butterfly stroke today, then I realised my hands and legs did not have enough strength to push my head out of the water. I could not do the third stroke.
Now that I have learned a few tricks here, i will apply them the next time.
Thanks!
Butterfly is all about timing and the arms. You can use fins all year but at some point your going to have to take them off.
Deeper butterfly is the way to go too
Wiry body types for long distance ...gorilla physiques for fly...hate and mania are the fuel for dynamic swimming..
But yea gaining velocity and momentum is difficult ...
i’m watching this *at* my swim meet cause i have to do 50 fly, it cant be that bad
I have to do 50 fly for the first time cause of a school house swim competition. Hopefully it won't be that bad
@@chant-c8503 i’ve done it twice now and i dropped 6 seconds on the second attempt
@@chant-c8503 just try to get a good rhythm going, Tomorrow I'm actually doing the 100 fly barely got onto varsity and I'm just praying I have it in me to finish. I usually have no problem with 50 meters but once i get to like 75 I suddenly just get so exhausted.
did 50 fly for the first time yesterday after trying it for the first time on tuesday and i did pretty well lol
It is looking very hard but I will certainly try hard to learn it.
And do you keep your head under water or you go above water with your head to breath
His ankles separate when he kicks. Should they or should they be kept together? Thx
Hi guys, i just want to tell you about my first time including butterfly stroke in my training, it went like...
auughrghguaauhlk uaghlk bleck gawlk auagh *proceeds using breast stroke or freestyle*
And there you have it guys It was hard.. but fun!
Kidding aside, hopefully I will improve in the next few weeks to months 😅
Is it when your hands has entered the water is the only time you do the dolfin kick?
Yesterday at a swim meet for high school I swam butterfly for the first time competitively I placed third and did not get DQ but it was so exhausting my arms felt limp afterwards but this just makes me wanna swim it more and get so much better at it
So your video was helpful thank you
I made the junior oltmpics for the 100 and 50yd fly
Thanks! I used to do the arm stroke like a doggie swimming!🐕🏊♂👌❤😊
Today i had a "alumni meet" where we just messed around and had events that you got to choose what you did, and you could do as many events as you wanted, and i chose to do the 50 back, breast, free, and fly, with all those events being back to back almost, and i somehow managed to actually do a good fly event though it was one of the last ones i did
Good knowledge
the kick is the most difficult.
It's very nice.
What do you call that kind of butterfly that the arms goes up-and-down instead of holding high like phelp? At the same time Undulate with much bigger amplitude.
