One of the many reasons why I admire Phelps is that after each victory, he looks to his family in the crowd. He truely appreciates those who have helped him to become the amazing athlete he is today. Your a good man, Michael Phelps!
Phelps inspires me so much. Swimming is by far the hardest sport out there, and the fact that this guy has TWENTY TWO Olympic medals, AND EIGHTEEN OF THEM ARE GOLD... He is everything any swimmer aspires to be. He is truly dedicated to his sport, which is exactly why he's so amazing.
If you watch, he's well ahead of the WR line after the Backstroke leg. I'd bet that he planned to press that length hardest since Lochte would be coming off his 200 Backstroke earlier that night. If you're a swimmer you know how much of a mental game races can be. I feel like Phelps planned on making that his strongest leg to get into Lochte's head by beating him at his best stroke.. Such a smart swimmer.
+K Woosh He might not be able to see him durring the backstroke leg, but he knows that Lochte's best leg is the backstroke leg (some could argue for the freestyle though)
5:28 It's so regrettable. If Michael Phelps moving his arm one more time he could break world record and finish in 1 minute 53 seconds. He is lord of swimming ever.👑
I have become Phelps' fan since I was 18, and now I am 35 still love him so much. Thanks to his inspiration I have achieved my dreams. I believe he will keep inspiring me many many years.

I'm from Ireland.. an Irish Olympic swimmer gave our team a team talk. She met Michael phelps she said he was so nice. She also met Ryan Lochte she said he was not nice at all.
***** agree with you on the lengths part, but about having a flat abdomen and leaner bodies, doesnt that come from the way they train (aka swimming vs lifting)? I dont think you can ever get massive like a bodybuilder just from swimming.
***** not as much as bodybuilders, and its not the same type of lifting. I know what I'm talking about because im a swimmer and i know people who are bodybuilders
Phelps' backstroke swim @ 4:10 was simply masterclass, such a joy to watch his style! he could easily win gold in the backstroke 100/200M swims if he were participating.
Because when he was 7 yrs old. He was scared to do freestyle so coach teach him first the backstroke i think he enjoy it.. So until now he such a fast swimmer in backstroke And all strokes..
Impressive how phelps were able to maintain the level of performance after so many years, most pro athletes at these elite levels will start to plateau or slow down as they age
Amazing how he almost swam the same time he posted in beijing...a true testament to the hard work and dedication he put forth in the last two years leading up to London. Well done Michael Phelps!
How on earth does Phelps swim away from Lochte on the Backstroke?! Just shows why he is the greatest swimmr of all time and the greatest Olympian to boot!!
Thomas Tuan Nguyen, so? You're saying the US shouldn't be at the Olympics? That's insane? They are just trained so well. That is what other countries need to do.
Unlike in a regular race, you can easily anticipate the start in a relay. In addition the step and arm swing add momentum to your dive, having you cover more distance both over and under the water. Also, as a general rule, swimmers get more pumped up for relays than they do for individual events
the relay stat is estimated to make a swimmer faster by about 0.5-0.7 because 1, you get better momentum by swinging the arms and 2, you can anticipate the touch and eliminate reaction time. So yes, the difference is pretty big
If Alex B's comment didn't help, I'll simplify it: For a regular, flat start (non-relay, you go off the buzzer) you don't know when the buzzer is going to go, so when it does go off your body has to start reacting and then is able to go maybe .6-.75 seconds later. For a relay, you know when the "buzzer" (swimmer coming in) is going to happen, so you're able to prepare yourself and start going off the block before that "buzzer" goes off, so when it does happen you're already going.
I say back stroke is one of the hardest stroke, you cant see whats in front of you or where the pool ends, you just have to rely on what you see from the ceiling or familiarize yourself with the pool before you compete
sweetunicorns whatever works for you, I find looking up the ceiling better than relying on the flags, the swimming pool that I used to practice have colored ceiling, it goes from red to blue, reds are from both ends and blue are the middlek
i am so so glad you say that man. most people don't realize how phony the training schedule is for team sports. its basically running plays and maybe a few hours a week in the weight room, believe me I KNOW. Swimming on the other is painstaking hours of staring at a black line. i mean i am so glad you brought it up. because to see someone excel at being the best swimmer/runner is what sports are about. SPORTS ARE ABOUT SEEING THE HUMAN LIMIT. not games, or entertainment. HUMAN LIMITs BROKEN.
I actually thought Phelps would have broken the world record and would have been the first man to break 1:54, but that is all right I would take a gold medal any day.

What a race !!!
Hagino has lots of medals too now.
The part that shocked me about this race was how Cseh wrestled the bronze from Pereira in the last 15m. Cseh has tremendous come back speed.
oh my goodness, i had never seen it before. That's one of the greatest comebacks i've ever seen distance wise in swimming.
Pereira really tightened up
Cseh bide his time until the last 20-15 m then let go!! watch it again this time focus on Cseh..
ran out of stamina maybe
Aaron Xu ,
I beg to disagree coz if you watch some of Michael Phelps performances this was nothing compared to his much awesome comebacks ?!

the mental strength that swimmers have is insane.. sometimes during practice I feel like giving up.
