Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

2:10 does anyone else find it precious that he actually greeted the officials
Yes 😊
Yes 😊
Nope.
He's Japanese
Japanese people do that all the time it's sign of respect
One of the many reasons why I admire Phelps is that after each victory, he looks to his family in the crowd. He truely appreciates those who have helped him to become the amazing athlete he is today. Your a good man, Michael Phelps!
how much is your age know?
Who doesn't

I like how phelps stretches his arms just before the start of a race.
its more like stretching his chest and shoulders
He was the inspiration for nagisa from Free! I'm sure lmao
My daughter does the same. Her smile watching him is priceless.
lol
im trying ,but it break my arm
**Olympics exist**
Phelps: ahh here we go again

Phelps inspires me so much. Swimming is by far the hardest sport out there, and the fact that this guy has TWENTY TWO Olympic medals, AND EIGHTEEN OF THEM ARE GOLD... He is everything any swimmer aspires to be. He is truly dedicated to his sport, which is exactly why he's so amazing.
olympian00 I disagree. Swimming is not the hardest sport.
***** Okay, how about this: swimming is ONE of the hardest sports?
Shrimp what do you think is the hardest sport? In my opinion swimming is easily one of the hardest.
My Too.
***** At least offer us some perspective.... That's basically the "why?" question with the "because" answer.
If you watch, he's well ahead of the WR line after the Backstroke leg. I'd bet that he planned to press that length hardest since Lochte would be coming off his 200 Backstroke earlier that night. If you're a swimmer you know how much of a mental game races can be. I feel like Phelps planned on making that his strongest leg to get into Lochte's head by beating him at his best stroke.. Such a smart swimmer.
I dont think so. simply because in meets u cant afford to look at your opponents unless you wanna lose. phelps swam like always does. At his best.

+K Woosh Lol what? Yes you can.
+Connor Hill That is kinda stupid but fair enough, whatever floats your boat.
+K Woosh He might not be able to see him durring the backstroke leg, but he knows that Lochte's best leg is the backstroke leg (some could argue for the freestyle though)
9:12 I feel like every swimmer watching can relate to that turn😂
When you're tired af it works out like this lol
that's more or less what my first flipturns looked like. Actually my first ones were more like turning onto my side lol.

The part that shocked me about this race was how Cseh wrestled the bronze from Pereira in the last 15m. Cseh has tremendous come back speed.
oh my goodness, i had never seen it before. That's one of the greatest comebacks i've ever seen distance wise in swimming.
Pereira really tightened up
Cseh bide his time until the last 20-15 m then let go!! watch it again this time focus on Cseh..
ran out of stamina maybe
Aaron Xu ,
I beg to disagree coz if you watch some of Michael Phelps performances this was nothing compared to his much awesome comebacks ?!
Watching Phelps win just makes me satisfied about everything.

It's so regrettable. If Michael Phelps moving his arm one more time he could break world record and finish in 1 minute 53 seconds.
He is lord of swimming ever.👑
I'm from Ireland.. an Irish Olympic swimmer gave our team a team talk. She met Michael phelps she said he was so nice. She also met Ryan Lochte she said he was not nice at all.
Anyone who says swimmers aren't the greatest athletes in the world is just lying to themselves
And/or jealous
+Andrew Vanderlei this is the truest thing ive ever read
+Andrew Vanderlei lol they're among the world's greatest athletes but they aren't THE greatest
No, Synchronized swimmers, then regular swimmers. ;)
+Matthew Davies boxing isn't even the hardest combat sport swimming is way more exhausting
That's pure dedication! "I've just won a gold medal, that's no big deal! I got to prepare for the next one"
Olympic gold medal is worth more.
Michael Phelps is the best swimmer ever! Thumbs up if you agree !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lane 5: Cseh 5 medals
lane 6: Perreira 1 silver medal
What a race !!!
Hagino has lots of medals too now.
I love the underwater camera shots at 4:29 as the swimmers push off the wall to prepare for the breast stroke. Epic zoom on Phelps.
I have become Phelps' fan since I was 18, and now I am 35 still love him so much. Thanks to his inspiration I have achieved my dreams. I believe he will keep inspiring me many many years.
I've watched this about 300 times and its still tense
As a swimmer I can confirm that Phelps slapping his arms around does make you swim faster.
phelps the best, legend of a swimmer
Phelps was amazing. What an athlete.
Phelps LEGEND
the mental strength that swimmers have is insane.. sometimes during practice I feel like giving up.
Love Takakuwa´s politeness towards judges and spectators. Respect.
Phelps' backstroke swim @ 4:10 was simply masterclass, such a joy to watch his style!
he could easily win gold in the backstroke 100/200M swims if he were participating.
Because when he was 7 yrs old.
He was scared to do freestyle so coach teach him first the backstroke i think he enjoy it..
So until now he such a fast swimmer in backstroke
And all strokes..
SOID! CORRECT! THE! (SWIM-MER)!!! MICHAEL!!! PHELPS!!! DOING! THE! (MED-LEY)!!! IS! (SWIM-MING)!!! POETRY! IN! (MO-TION)!!!
The reason he didnt swim backstroke was cause he didnt qualify, so no, he wouldnt be 1st (btw 4 years later)
@@dppjos2293 Didn't he start swimming at 11 years of age?
Michael you are still one of my all time favorites along with the class of 1984.

Michael Phelps is the best of the everybody swimmer
Impressive how phelps were able to maintain the level of performance after so many years, most pro athletes at these elite levels will start to plateau or slow down as they age
Michael Phelps is soooooooooo amazing
IKR!! Best swimmer in history! No best Olympian in history! That's why he's my hero! I'm an USA swimmer
Phelps body is perfect for swimming look at the length of his body to legs and his arm span. Lochte doesn't really have a swimmers build
Phelps has a miracle body for swimming, but lochte's is also not bad. look at his dolphin kick,
what about it? what is a swimmers build?
***** agree with you on the lengths part, but about having a flat abdomen and leaner bodies, doesnt that come from the way they train (aka swimming vs lifting)? I dont think you can ever get massive like a bodybuilder just from swimming.
***** not as much as bodybuilders, and its not the same type of lifting. I know what I'm talking about because im a swimmer and i know people who are bodybuilders
***** actually michael has short legs for his height, which gives him a faster and more stable kick.
Michael Phelps is "just" the best🥵💪🏼❤
Amazing how he almost swam the same time he posted in beijing...a true testament to the hard work and dedication he put forth in the last two years leading up to London. Well done Michael Phelps!
michael phelps is an awesome swimmer.I adore him
He is the greatest sports person ever to live. It's a privilege to know him.❤️❤️❤️

7:46…"have a nice surprise face full of my wet cap, you minions."
Bro it's 2019 now
LOL
Unlike in a regular race, you can easily anticipate the start in a relay. In addition the step and arm swing add momentum to your dive, having you cover more distance both over and under the water. Also, as a general rule, swimmers get more pumped up for relays than they do for individual events
So amazing!!!
I miss this Ryan Lochte.
Just amazing! (y) He's coming to Rio 2016!
And he did better in Rio 2016 than he did in London 2012!

o
Thomas Tuan Nguyen, so? You're saying the US shouldn't be at the Olympics? That's insane? They are just trained so well. That is what other countries need to do.
@@joeyjerry2981 it's not that deep. he's just saying the other swimmers had no chance with the insane talent they were up against this year.
I say back stroke is one of the hardest stroke, you cant see whats in front of you or where the pool ends, you just have to rely on what you see from the ceiling or familiarize yourself with the pool before you compete
Yes backstroke is very tiring but I believe butterfly is the hardest
Actually you count your strokes from the flags so you're not relying on the ceiling you're relying on the flags
They probably don't swim, so it's okay.
sweetunicorns whatever works for you, I find looking up the ceiling better than relying on the flags, the swimming pool that I used to practice have colored ceiling, it goes from red to blue, reds are from both ends and blue are the middlek
Actually I do swim competitively but it's always outdoors so they have to put flags up
The best michael !
he saves his energy for the other races, he swims multiple races each day, you just need to make it to the final, he saves it for the final
HUNGARY! HUNGARY!
Phelps will win 200m IM and 100m fly for the fourth time in RIO 2016, and he will win the 200m fly for the third time. You read it here first.
He's not swimming in Rio
