    It is very difficult for an average person to understand the dedication, strength, perseverance, passion, and willpower it takes to jettison your body through water at maximum efficiency for this long with this much pressure. Simply outstanding.

      @The final Verdict This severely undermines people who achieve amazing things in the midst of poverty, war, sickness, and destruction. Michael Phelps got to where he was because he worked hard for it. There's a saying, "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." It doesn't matter how gifted you are or how good of an opportunity is presented to you if you don't utilize it to the fullest. Americans with all the best resources in the world still lose from folks around the world in all types of events, simply because they wanted it more and worked more for it. Michael Phelps is where he's at because he worked day and night for it. He's notorious for conducting upwards 3x the workout regiments his competitors were doing, ignoring people who tried to discourage his approach.

    People don't truly understand how insane this is. To not only be the best in the United States at swimming but the World in MULTIPLE disciplines. The hours swimmers put in just to be a "good swimmer" is mind boggling. The guy is the greatest Olympian ever.

    • @auntkaz422
      @auntkaz422 3 года назад +633

      Truly he had it all. Even his body was proportioned perfectly to do what he did... Usually the distance from a person's fingertip to the other fingertip equals their height. Phelps "wingspan" was longer than he was tall perfect for swimming).
      Usually swimmers are really good at one stroke, he was "world record" good at many. And the form he had.. Just look at his butterfly. Freaking poetry in motion.
      His starts and turns were about as good as it gets (watch how he is still under water on the starts when others are already up and swimming and how he pulls ahead every time there is a turn). And I can't even tell you the voodoo he pulled on some of those close finishes.
      His strength training was totally on point and his endurance was beyond anything I have ever seen. To pull off a world record in the Olympics would take everything out of most people, but to swim event after event (and remember, he had to swim qualifying heats for each event as well as the final heat) shattering world record after world record, SEVEN TIMES in ONE Olympics?!! Truly, the GOAT if ever there was one. As impressive to see again today as it was watching it happen live "back in the day".

    Michael Phelps is the greatest Olympian of all times with 23 Olympic Gold Medals with 28 Olympic medals overall. This number is so mind blogging. Winning an Olympic gold medal is already such an achievement

    • @ic8658
      @ic8658 5 лет назад +149

      I totally agree, he is in my opinion the greatest Olympian of all-time. However, I don't always look at the 28 medals as the only thing that makes him so amazing, because the reality is that swimming is a sport that really allows that medal count to sky rocket versus say, sprinting in track and field. They just have way more events in swimming. That being said, I have Phelps as #1 and Bolt as #2, in my opinion.

    dudes body was just like the perfect vessel to become the greatest swimmer of all time. Has the almost crazilty perfect body for swimming with very long torso and arms and short legs. This disproportionately large chest enables Phelps to power himself through the water. It also means his legs produce less drag (or water resistance) with each stroke. His Wingspan is longer than his height. He is 6'4 and his wingspan is 6'7. And his short legs act like flippers almost. His body is just the perfect swimming machine. Of course it couldnt be done without the immense training and fitness, but the guy was definitely born with the perfect swimmer body.

    • @abagofjuice5367
      @abagofjuice5367 4 года назад +14

      he was also better because he was just more fit, swam more yardage, and he slept in altitude, which improved his breathing ranges, dudes lungs were twice the average size bc of all the altitude training/sleeping in a “altitude chamber” that he did. Although even before all that he was great when he was in age groups bc he’s just naturally talented but he also worked insanely hard, so he was pretty much unbeatable.

    Dude has the perfect body type for an elite swimmer. Large torso length to leg length ratio.

    At this Olympics, all the stars in the sky were for him. How they pulled out the relay, how he pulled out the 100 meters, is unique and forever in history. This will not happen again

    me: watched the olympics, so i know how these races end
    also me: read the title of this video, so i *really* know how these races end
    also, also me: holding my breath in suspense for the last lap of, like, every race

      NO BUT LIKE SAME. like the title says every gold medal(meaning he won) and i’m still sitting here like 😬😬😬 who’s gonna win...

      @@alyssahain i blame my father, who, throughout my youth got me to rewatch bambi because "what if his mom makes it this time". apparently the grown-up/quarantine-brain version of that is "what if michael phelps loses this race that he got the gold medal in a million years ago?!?!"

      Especially the 4X100 relay. I remember watching that the first the French were badmouthing the Americans. That was exciting to watch!

    I just cant imagine swimming at full speed, using 4 different strokes for almost a solid 4 minutes!! The stamina and conditioning is mind boggling!!
