I think it was, but since some of the swimmers, especially the ones who competed in the 2000 Olympics and earlier, were so used to grab starts that they used it at Athens.
I'm spoiled with the videos that give information on who was first, second and third on each split and who won and how close the times were. There were some close races here and it would have been nice to know the time differences.
Not sure if giving his final spot on the 400MR to Crocker was noble or the best thing for the team...especially after Crocker's failure in the lead off of the 400FR. I found it interesting that his fly split (with a flying start) was only 2 tenths slower than his leadoff free split. Not sure I would have had that confidence in giving that spot to Crocker ... as a coach or as a teammate.
He would’ve swam the butterfly leg since he beat Ian Crocker in the 100 fly, but he gave his spot to Crocker because he wanted to give him a chance to see what he could do, since his previous races weren’t too good.

You are both correct. Michael Phelps only swam the preliminary race for the 4x100m medley at Athens 2004. However as he swam within the competition he also received the gold medal.

One guy in the 200m fly was wearing a brief. A lot of women in 2004 also wore open-leg training suits.
