Butterfly technique is one of the most difficult in swimming. Body movements in butterfly are crucial, they will help you to swim through the water like a dolphin if you do it correctly. For everyone, it is hard to start learning to swim butterfly. This is why, you are going to learn it step-by-step. Firstly, you need to set up one technical element and only then move forward to the next one.

What is the most important technique element for you when you swim butterfly?

Great video. I think the kick timing is important to get right up early on

My most important technique element is doing at least 100 yd of body dolphin to feel the water, work on forward propulsion using both the up and down kicks. Timing the body dolphin to the arm pull . I often take my last 25 yd swimming slow fly allowing myself to feel the rhythm, to work with the water instead of fighting it, to feel the timing and to see my orientation in the water relative to the surface. This slow fly length often coincides with the last 30 seconds that the pool is open--I always emerge from the water wishing that I'd done more slow fly before that last 25. I don't do much dry land exercises aside from going through the arm motion of fly stroke and the arm motion of backstroke before jumping into the pool. For an old guy of 61, I'm flexible enough. I don't swim for speed--I swim for technique and if speed happens, so be it.

In my opinion the correct timing between arm and leg strokes are very important.

I watched many videos on the butterfly. This video is the best. I'm 73. Three months ago I decided to learn butterfly by using RUclips. I was told my butterfly looks like a toad sinking in the water and a Latino compared my mariposa to a Tortuga swimming despacito! After feeling comfortable with this stroke, I had a lifeguard to take a video of my butterfly. The arms and head look rather good, but my legs were set too much apart! It was a defect easy to correct. However, because of my age, I will never have the speed of a professional, but I'm feeling smug about my butterfly even the family was surprised--they thought I would never make it. I told them it's never too late to teach an old dog a new trick!
NOTE: My motto is the following: If you want to beat Covid-19 swim the butterfly in the magical environment that is salt water.

That you are showing a young, energetic swimmer. You will show the capabilities and success of a 50-60 year old swimmer in this discipline and with this style. It would be very educational.

I initiate the spinal wave by snapping the head. Skaters, surfers, dancers, and martial artists etc initiate spins and turns by first turning the head. The rule we use is body follows head. This loads the fascia of the torso which is then unleashed with a whipping snap. There is no ( slow and fatiguing) muscle contraction, only fascia stretching and release.

Great video! I find that I'm ok at doing the kicks and body movement. The arm pull is ok, but find the recovery of the arms over the top of the water difficult and most difficult is the timing of the kicks and arm pulls. Any drills/exercises you can show to help with that would be appreciated. Thanks for the videos!

Good video, but for a bit of constructive criticism.. The guy demonstrating pauses too long at the entry of the hands. The hands entry should time with the down kick so he can immediately begin his next stroke. The legs have too much of a pause, especially at the end of the up kick which means the timing between the arms and legs is off.

Youre right, but this video made for beginer,so i think they supposed to seperate it to long stroke. After doing all this good, you can easily build up to the speed like athletic that you mentioned about
