I think I'd rather see the Land Cruiser go up against the G-Wagon.
There are plenty of Russian youtube videos that do that, check out the Manager Anton channel.
Spoiler alert : the G class demolishes everything.
Might be more capable, but you'll never see a G-Wagon used the same way that the LC is used. An LC looks good with a few scuff marks on it, like it's been used the way it ought to be. Scuffs on a G-Wagon make the owner look like they don't care for their stuff.
ktpinnacle it’s been done, it failed.
Or... how about a run off between the most expensive off-reader offerings from these three manufacturers plus one from Land Rover, ie GWagon, Grand Cherokee, Land Cruiser, Discovery.
Now that's a battle!! Make it happen TFL.
MAN! That Blue 4runner on the white snow! That contrast cannot be beaten!
Yes 👍 I agree ☝️
Voodoo blue.
No you’re wrong.
The best off-road vehicle is the one you aren’t afraid to use off-road and get all scratched, dented and dirty.
Yeah like a fifteen-year-old Jeep Rubicon or modified pickup truck. In a way this entire test is flawed because no one is going to take their brand new vehicle into a situation like this. So why single out the Mercedes... It's no newer than the rest of them or nicer than the rest of them they're all new and nice and in a way it's not any more expensive than the rest of them since it's going to be owned by someone who can afford it
Gabesafish, we get it, you have an XJ...
This is the best answer. I bought a Raptor to go off road and quickly realized it's a shit off-roader for this very reason.
@@jclar3565 I agree with MOST of what you're saying but the G Wagon is more expensive in very single way imaginable. It costs a whole lot more to buy, it costs a while lot more to maintain and it costs a whole lot more to repair.
J Clar oh you’re wrong. I bought a 16 T4R and 15 Tacoma, then 18 Tundra all new and all were promptly taken into the mountains of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana for rock bashing, sloppy mud and desert running before they even had permanent plates. There are some of us out there that bought these vehicles to be the off roader they are not a fancy mall crawler. Got dents, scratches and stories to go with them.
Tires, best mod ever.
front locker on the 4runner and it would've been chilling on that trail though
@@benjacobson7490 Yeah, especially with the IFS limiting articulation. GM offers one on the colorado ZR2 and the new Bronco will have one. Hopefully Toyota will add a front locker to the next TRD.
@@tcv4 yeah, imo they should go back to solid axles, to compete with the wrangler better but ik they won't do that
OK, first of all, for the 4 runner, when it was slipping, TURN ON THE DAM REAR DIFF LOCK!
They did.
I was really surprised with the G550's performance considering the tire it comes with. Those Pirelli's look more like summer performance tires than all season light-off roaders.
Snow chains will fix that problem
Not sure why you would be surprised...it's almost $150k. It BETTER be good.
Toyota isn’t updating the 4runner because the car never breaks and is insanely reliable
Amen to that!! I agree! I LOVE TOYOTA! :)

I love my 2000 4Runner Limited with multi-mode and the factory Locker. At 210k miles she's still solid as a rock, doesn't burn oil, and still has 215psi in all cylinders. She's ready to rock up to 500k miles. The 3rd Gen still looks good too 🤘
Scott K. I have an ‘01 runner with 360k miles, that the check engine light came on in for the first time...it was the gas cap seal going bad. The engine will literally last longer than the rubber gasket on the gas cap. Best all around vehicle ever made in my opinion.

That's why I put KO2's on all my trucks.
Tires really do make the difference
I've been using BFG MT's and AT's for years. They are the best all around tire if you have to drive on the road and want to hit a trail.
How are the KO2’s in snow?
@@mikewellington2738 I've tried grabbers, mts and all terrain discoveries. Hands down the KO2's are the best I've ever run. We have them on our Chevy 2500 HD and they do amazing in snow. Also have them on my Nissan hard body 78 GMC Sierra and Dodge Durango. I was running around in 34 inches of snow pulling people out when we got hit hard. Little bit of slip but that's to be expected.
Go to discount tires if you're interested in a set, if you don't like em they'll take em back with in the first 30 days.
@@mikewellington2738 They are accepted as a snow tire in Canada, so damn good.
mike wellington excellent! The new bfg AT rubber compound is a huge improvement; especially on snow. I run BFG AT’s in the summer and Blizzaks on my Tacoma in Alaska all winter. The BFG’s have ~75% the traction of the Blizzaks. They’re not a dedicated winter tire but they’re impressively close.
I am not an off roader but put KO2 on all three vehicles and redo the test!
The guy in the Toyota did not understand the crawl control...

Toyotas are one-trick ponies: "reliability." Not all of us keep our vehicles for 800k miles. Would rather drive an exciting, passionate vehicle that "only" lasts for 200k miles than an underpowered, uninspired dog.
@MysteriousOklahoma You're right. That's why I pay cash and only buy what I want to drive, not an uninspired, bland, appliance-like vehicle that appeals to the one-dimensional folks who only value "reliability" in its various, sometimes intangible forms. Regarding the planet, I agree that we are destroying it by needlessly and selfishly emitting approximately 40 billion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year and are reaping the destructive results in the form of horrific climate change. There is a mandate in Europe that all new vehicles sold by 2035 must be electric.
@Private Number It's not out dated if it out lasts the new shit :P
The slow drag test was awesome. For the first half i was screaming "You've got it in 2nd Tommy! You've got it in 2nd!".

You never see a G Wagen offroad 🤣
It's essentially the same as Land Rovers. It takes seven years and it's third owner for a Land Rover to be actually off-roaded.
@@psychologicaltirefire8190 not true, I’ve got a 2019 RR Lwb autobiography and it spends about 70% of its time off-road and not just around a farm, I take it everywhere off-road. The crawl-drag race was the funniest thing I've seen in a good while. Great fun!
I believe the ORI doesn’t weight tires high enough. Time and time again in many of your videos “it’s all about the tires”.
Jack Galuardi >>> I agree. A pair of A/S slicks on the most capable vehicle turns it it into a spinner. Good offroad tires on something not so offroad worthy makes a surprising difference in grip.
Kind of disagree, tires are the first and easiest thing to swap depending on what you want to use your truck for. Can't really say the G-wagon is worse off road because it's delivered on the wrong tires for the terrain? Would be like saying Usain Bolt sucks at running after forcing him to wear a pair of tap dancing shoes for a race...
@@texnorthman >>> I'll see your disagree, and raise you another disagree ;-) I think you just have a soft-spot for the Gestapo Vagon.
@@tactickleshtooper1753 You may be right ;) But I still feel that something as simple as swapping tires, done in 20 minutes at a tire shop, can't be compared to adding a lift kit or a diff lock or whatever. Would have liked to see what the stock G-wagon could do compared to the Rubicon if they were on the same tires, which anyone intending to use them for off road would do immediately.
Great point. the reason they’re rated as such is because tires are easy and relatively affordable to swap after the fact!
Hey guys! All of the problems you experienced with the G-Wagen should be solved with it's new Trail Package. It includes higher profile BFG All Terrain tyres, smaller wheels (with a nice off-roady design), and more underbody protection. I think the reason most G-Wagens come with those all season tyres is, like you said, almost none of their owners will ever take them off road. But the ones that will, will get the Trail Package for sure.
I really appreciate your guys' videos. Thanks so much!
The Jeep performed better in the snow because it had the superior tire. The only tire of the three that has the blizzard rating. It would be interesting how these three cars would do if they all had the KO2’s now that we know how they do with the oem tires.
I’m sure the locking front diff makes a huge difference as well
Jeep would still crush them both. Solid axles and sway bar disconnect would be the difference maker.
@@greg2772 well, I think the Toyota's is more for the high-speed off-road stuff.

So what you doing with the other $60k+?
I want to see these things done with the two door Jeeps. Superior breakover, turning radius, and weight. Using the Unlimited is just handicapping the Jeep results. We aren't comparing how much junk you can stow in them, we're comparing off road capability.
I imagine they're comparing all the on road versions as well, mixing cars capable of both to keep a more level playing field? Less variables in the experiment maybe? Lol what do I know im just a random guy commenting on a video😂
If you didn't air down the tires, you're not going to get great grip.

In my opinion you should fit all the vehicles with same tires. After all the tires are the only way to transfer the power to the ground. It would also result in a more fair comparison.
Blame MB for putting shit tires on that truck.
@David Kopp not us you offroad or if you have heavy snow where you live. I live in the mountains and it snows and I offroad a lot.

The point was to test the cars as they shipped from the factory. So you can't talk about fitting the same tires here.

I took my 2012 Honda Pilot through similar sections using the locker and it was shocking how well it did. However, the suspension just isn't built to take on these conditions consistently.
Why not let the Jeep go first once in a while to see how it performs on fresh snow, not a trail where it’s already been carved through by another?
Because the tires make all the difference and it wouldn't matter.
Going first is easier. Trail isnt rotted up by shitty drivers

Isn’t the land cruiser the most off road worthy Toyota?
4runner is a poor man's land cruiser of sorts. Want the v8 get a 4th generation (03-09) 4runner (same engine is used in tundra, land cruiser, Lexus GX460/470, and sequoia) or a Lexus GX 460/470 If you want more luxury than a 4runner. Just as capable off-road.
Landcruiser is better overall though. World's strongest frame and comes with all the lockers, like the G wagon does. But they're expensive though. So out of the 3, for the money, the 4runner is the best. Most versatile, and most capable in multiple categories. Not just focused on one thing only.
When the sequoia and land cruiser gets stuck, it takes the army Corp of engineers and a Sikorsky Sky Crane to air lift those 6,000 lb behemoths out of the woods.
@Supercreech your full of shit!! Land cruiser is by far a better off-roader
The best imo is the fj cruiser
Technically the Land Cruiser is the better offroader however that would be the 80 and 70 series not the 200's. I don't think the USA gets those and only the 4runner much like only the USA has the Toyota Tacoma and the rest of the world has the Hilux. It's a weird sort of thing to be honest
Great test TFL this is how you buy these trucks so they should be performing well offroad. I have a Rubicon with 70k miles and zero issues, a 4Runner wouldn’t bring me joy so I am willing to take a risk with my Jeep.
If you can afford $140k you can afford the damage... IMO

I have a 2014 4Runner, and you need to let it slip a little longer for that A-trac system to start working its magic. He seemed to let off the gas the second it lost traction
To be fair to the G wagon, a lot of Euro folk would have a set of winter tires they would put on for the snow.
Also you have no issues spending $2k on off road tires if you can down $120k on the truck
I expect in Europe they would have access to the G wagon Professional. They don't have all the luxury bells and whistles. They do still have the price tag.

My 04 Tahoe Z71 has only 4 and it’s a fun ride off road.
Yes you are dead on bro. Some guys need to put down what they don’t drive, 5-6-20 gears my ass🍀
Considering I'm old enough to remember some cars with 2 speeds and the most any had was 3, 5 is plenty in my book.
Saying “look at that bank vault go” that’s hilariously perfect
Love the slow drag race. Another great video guys.
Put the same tires as whats on the wrangler on the 4 Runner and do another test. Guarantee the results from the 4 Runner will be much different.
Tires make a big difference.
Who wants a 2 liter turbo? In terms of long term reliability alone the yota I'd take hands down.
But they test them as they come out of the factory
@@withintheglass2170 No, they test them as they got them from the dealer. If they had ordered the cars themselves from the factory, they would have some options on tires as well as all the other stuff that brought the price up to a 140k. Someone else had configured the cars, and the G-wagon was clearly meant for dry roads in this configuration. Personally I think it's a crime to put those tires on a G-Wagon, but there seems to be no actual laws on the matter :)
Now the Jeep may well be a better off road car than the the others here, but this test only proves that you need the right tires for the conditions you drive in. That said, I have only driven older G-wagons in military configurations, and they seemed unstoppable, so I have no real base for comparison.
I agree to a point. I have a set of GT Altimax r43 all season for my Rav4 and they are better in the snow than Hankook dedicated winter tire. And even with max performance summer tires I can still drive in snow. Just dont want to but yes there is a big difference. I just dont understand how those Nitos were so bad.
@@BjrnRuthberg I know I'm old school but I just don't think of Mercedes when I think of off roading.
They all should have the same kind of tires on them..
Cant wait for 2030 when these all see the offroad for the first time! More a test of tire here imo, surprised me the 4runner Nittos were not overly spectacular. Like to see a Raptor.
You MUST put on the SAME tires on all vehicles . until then, your comparisons are only 50% valid
Massimo Mtl I agree put the BF Goodrich KO2s on all of them then see what happens.
Not factory though 🤷🏻♂️ you can modify however you want. In that case you can make any of them do whatever you want them to do
This is how you film a G-Wagen in action : ruclips.net/video/oMFIPdOOi_Y/видео.html
Right...🤣😂😂
@@hesher866 I don't even consider tires a modification if they are on the stock wheels. Anyone off-roading is going to put some kind of AT tires on the vehicle. To test the actual vehicle performance, they should all have the same tires. The major negative for the G-class are those huge wheels. Frankly, I'd rather have 15 inch wheels on any of them. More rubber is always better.
psi should've been at 18psi on all vehicles for a more accurate comparison
I came to the comments to see what the PSI was set at.
Not enough sidewall on the g wagon
I like your scoring system, but maybe put a ramp index score on there. Flex matters!
I just brought the 19 Rubicon and I'm looking like a proud father right now. I have the 3.6 engine though. It's nice to see stock out the box how capable it is.
Deep snow in a 4 Runner is when you decide its not worth going any further and back up only to find "ATOYOT" imprinted in the snow bank (from the grill). Been there, Done that!
I'd love to have a 4 runner for my wife if only they would do what the consumers want, more power better MPG"s and update the interior. And the Bronco is comming !
Not sure what people need in an interior. I have an FJ Cruiser and it has a speedometer, tach, buttons for traction control and a radio. Not sure what more an interior needs besides decent seats.
John Curry Toyota drivers are socialists ...” if you needed a better interior Toyota would give you one”
Bunco 2500 You can buy highlander if you want more comfort. 4Runner is for the folks who love barebone body-on-frame beasts.
@@g496r500t what more do you need besides a functioning radio, functioning gauges and seats that comfortably hold your ass? And not just for a 4x4, but for any vehicle really. My first few vehicles were from the 70's, so maybe my view is skewed. Or maybe a better question is, what would your idea of a better interior be?
Do a vehicle comparison with all vehicles using the same tires! I’m sure that G-Wagon could do more. But the tires 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Great review Gentlemen! Thanks.
Perhaps a reliability factor should be added to the ORI. Isn't it important to know your truck will get you back out again?
Agreed. That jeep and benz are fast off the line sure, but they'll also be fastest to the junk yard. The Toyota may be slow too, but it'll be the last vehicle out of the three to see a junkyard.
Great video! Absolutely love these types of videos! I would be so scared taking a 200 series or the g wagon 😂 That's why I got a '97 (80 series) and a '99 (100 series) Land Cruiser. Still scared of scratching/denting it 😂
Those KO2s are the best. Had them on my big truck. Miss them on my TACO
Hello I enjoyed the video. Well done. The BF Goodrich tires ruled and showed that they make a huge difference in off road ability. Grip is important.
In sand mud and snow it's all about momentum, the gwagon is heavy and if he carried some speed into the snow climb he would have made it. He was just too worried about breaking it...
