The design of the Jeep, and all similar vehicles, is specifically tailored to offroading, no matter what people say. Observe, the primary design purpose of a pickup truck is work: hauling and carrying. As their usage became more popular the manufacturers had to accommodate and adapt the vehicles to secondary and tertiary capabilities: hauling (more) passengers and towing. While this TFL test is a wonderful test designed primarily around rock crawling, it is neither the only version of offroading and it is scewed in bias of the Jeep. If you feel like levelling the playing field take your Jeep on a real Baja fast run with the Raptor and then average out the overall performance. Any test that primarily revolves around rock crawling is naturally scewed to the advantage of the Jeep ... that is not unbiased nor thorough testing. While the Jeep may generally have a rock crawling advantage, with respect to tall, wide, broad people they are terribly uncomfortable. Expand your tests and you're money TFL ...

No one cares about Baja. Most people don't even take them off road. And if they do its not Baja style. What are there 4 states with actually Baja terrain? Lol
How it is very close between the two, the Jeep is slightly better off-road just because of its ground clearance and front and rear lockers. Fj has only a rear locker and worse clearance but still a very capable off roader. However, the fj will last 10x longer than the Jeep which makes it better in my eyes!
TFL ought to put together a video addressing the high tech live valve shocks “required maintenance” according their owners manual to satisfy the warranty requirements. Bet you the cost will be SHOCKING!

IF I were to have 1 of these vehicles to do it all, Tommy once again picks the perfect well rounded choice. Which is why I picked it for myself 2 years ago. :) It is reliable, capable, comfortable, practical and resalable. 4Runner every day of the week and twice on Sunday. And no, I am not a fanboy. But one cannot argue the facts. I want to say the FJ is the way to go, but I had that option and it was not quite as refined for everyday driving.
All trucks were amazing but there is an Easy answer to this question, which truck can go places the other cannot go? The answer is Gladiator. Plus, it’s such a good Overlander. Coming from a precious Wrangler and Tacoma owner.

Great videos! Defender was impressive but depreciation and low reliability is hard to swallow for the price you pay for them. You get the FJ and the reliability for a quarter of the price. The FJ and the Jeep are my top two.

Besides individual parts they are all pretty close across dirt and mud trails except Toyota’s crawl control at the price point supersedes in the truck category.
Tommy, the increments of the Gladiator's hill descent control is in 0.6 miles per hour because 0.6 miles per hour equals 1 kilometer per hour and Jeep is a proponent of the metric system.
I just bought a boring 2021 4Runner TRD Pro:) Finding it pretty versatile. The Defender is amazing, but pricey and complex. 4Runner is old school, capable, and above all very reliable. Good fit for my needs!

Defender is definitely the best in this off road capability test. But yeah, reliability is definitely a problem. 9/10 it’ll get you there and back, but that one time it’ll leave you stranded where the others won’t
Hey guys love what you do keep up the great work. Just gonna give my opinion, I just would like to see you do comparison with standard 4x4 trucks again like the the Z71, Fx4, Frontier Pro 4x you get the picture for us blue collar folks.
I'd take the Defender every time. Your Defender isn't even the fully spec'd out off road version and it still beat everything else! Also, I'm English and a Land Rover owner so 🤷♂️
This was one of your best videos so far, guys. The Trx is a beast if you have the money to feed it. If you wanna play the offroad game, just buy a two door Rubicon and you won't regret anything. Especially if they come out with a V8 soon.
If it hasn’t been invented yet, you could make something to fit in the tow hitch, and it has a steel roller under it so it doesn’t rub on the tow hitch. It rolls on the steel roller.
So... Defender is: - The best off-road amongst the 6 vehicles, no scratches, smooth etc etc. - The most technologically advanced amongst the lot in terms of off-road and other gadgets - The best looking amongst the lot (as the video said, it can live in New York, Beverly Hills or Moab) - The most advanced engine amongst the lot with it's supercharged and mild hybrid engine. - The most comfortable amongst the group Very obvious reason why it wins on paper and in real test! Land Rovers are no doubt the best stock off-road vehicles on planet!
Tommy: "No Problem... cause it doesn't weigh as much as a city bus" Also Tommy: *Ignoring the sounds of his truck having the departure angles of a city bus* "No issues, no sound of anything there. The sound of Music!"
Yes! Those two trucks would be an absolute blast in the dunes. The Jeep not so much. Instead of Moab, they should head out to Sand Hollow and blast through the dunes. Then if they get stuck they can just call Matt, LOL.
Have you noticed on the TRX the fog lights will turn on when the vehicle is moving so if you turn the wheel to the left left fog lamp will turn on as a indicator like high-end cars have try it out
The Toyota was too heavily modified to even be considered. I agree with Andre and Tommy: a Rubicon, be it Wrangler or Gladiator, is simply the best off-roader on the market. The TRX is too big, too powerful, too heavy, and obviously too expensive. The Raptor is better than the former, being lighter and with better off-road tech and equipment, but it is very wide and calls for steep prices. The Defenders demand respect, but reliability is iffy, and as soon as you climb up the specs trims and options, you can quickly hit $80+ The Gladiator it is. 😎👍 p.s. ....and Iveco Daily 4x4 would have been a nice addition, those things are popular in Australia, true off-road monsters! 😁
Always fantastic videos. regardless of being a bit dated, the Raptor still looks meaner then the TRX. Something about the front of the TRX just doesnt flow. Overall the TRX and Raptor are both designed for Baja type running, and thats what the test should explore, which it doesnt.
Andre in the Raptor on “one tree hill” on rocks, a high friction surface - turns on the rear locker. Don’t need it there and you don’t use a locker on high friction surfaces. The Gladiator HDC in increments of 0.6mph will be because it’s based on metric units of km/h most likely. Basically 1, 2, 3 km/h or thereabouts. Defender wins hands down - no question.
That's a tough call. After all, you're testing two desert runners and one rock crawler on a rock crawling course. That being said, they all passed with flying colors. None of them had to concede an obstacle. At that point, they're equal, only leaving ground clearance. To which the TRX won seeing as, with the exception of the "Butt Scratcher" where it was a tie with the Raptor, it had the least clearance issues. And, yes I'd love to see a comparison with the two desert runners doing what they were designed to do.
Awesome video! Is this a highly caffeinated Tommy here, he was on fire with the zingers! The two big trucks did impressively well considering their size, but a great test of them would be to take them out in the dunes and let them rip it up in their true environment. Obviously the Jeep is going to be an off-road weapon in this type of terrain, that's exactly what it's made for. As far as scraping the hitch, I just think of a hitch as a skid plate for the bumper, it's most likely the strongest point of the vehicle anyway 😁
The more I drove other offroad vehicles, the more I understand how good Jeeps are. The suspension is just so much better than most road cars. And even I really love big horsepower, I have to say gearing is more important unless you are only doing high-speed stuffs.
I know video doesn't do justice for showing how steep certain sections are, but that last hill looks steep as $%^!! Great video guys, more than anything I like how you can easily tell all you guys are good friends having a good time together.
I'd like to see a best FAST off-road contest. I live in east Texas where our off-roading is muddy fields, but in the woods too. I feel like a Raptor would be the most fun, but would have the biggest chance of not making it through the trees.
you guys know what we never see up on the high backcountry of Colorado? Dodge TRX's and Raptors. we do see the galdiators, but they are usually at the wrong end of a tow strap. the defenders are usually down in the golf course parking lots or at the repair place. tacos , 4 runners, and highly modified jeeps are the way to go where the going actually gets tough.

If it hasn’t been invented yet, you could make something to fit in the tow hitch, and it has a steel roller under it so it doesn’t rub on the tow hitch. It rolls on the steel roller.
So... Defender is:
- The best off-road amongst the 6 vehicles, no scratches, smooth etc etc.
- The most technologically advanced amongst the lot in terms of off-road and other gadgets
- The best looking amongst the lot (as the video said, it can live in New York, Beverly Hills or Moab)
- The most advanced engine amongst the lot with it's supercharged and mild hybrid engine.
- The most comfortable amongst the group
Very obvious reason why it wins on paper and in real test!
Land Rovers are no doubt the best stock off-road vehicles on planet!
That TRX has some serious rear articulation.
On the frame bender, the raptor clearly took a harder line and the other 2 were 3 ft right. Just saying
Tommy: "No Problem... cause it doesn't weigh as much as a city bus"
Also Tommy: *Ignoring the sounds of his truck having the departure angles of a city bus* "No issues, no sound of anything there. The sound of Music!"
Great video! Proud owner of a 2020 Gladiator Rubicon!
Take the big trucks out to the sand dunes. They are not trail trucks.
Exactly
Yes! Those two trucks would be an absolute blast in the dunes. The Jeep not so much. Instead of Moab, they should head out to Sand Hollow and blast through the dunes. Then if they get stuck they can just call Matt, LOL.
@@trailrunnah8886 I made a call! :-)
Have you noticed on the TRX the fog lights will turn on when the vehicle is moving so if you turn the wheel to the left left fog lamp will turn on as a indicator like high-end cars have try it out
Tommy's play by play on the TRX gas consumption is PRICELESS.
Love this channel but this was all about entry and departure angles... that’s maybe 10% of this debate. Kinda let down..
All super super cool vehicles in this contest ! The V8 is coming for the Defender and that will give it a definite boost.
The Defenders demand respect, but reliability is iffy, and as soon as you climb up the specs trims and options, you can quickly hit $80+
The Gladiator it is. 😎👍
p.s. ....and Iveco Daily 4x4 would have been a nice addition, those things are popular in Australia, true off-road monsters! 😁
The gladiator in its stock form I don’t think would’ve fared as well as the bigger trucks in their stock form. Gladiator had a 2” lift and 35” tires
The defender wins that battle. It's 100% bone stock. Imagine if a stock 4runner and stock gladiator was used. They would definitely scrape more......
Couldn’t agree more!👍
Again, youre only testing approach and departure angle, show rock crawling mudding etc
That’s my thought too. This entire test could have been recreated with a tape measure in the dealer lot.
So no Zr2... bison with 35s is what I have been wanting to see... especially for approach/depature and articulation... ah well..
The more I drove other offroad vehicles, the more I understand how good Jeeps are. The suspension is just so much better than most road cars. And even I really love big horsepower, I have to say gearing is more important unless you are only doing high-speed stuffs.
Might not be a Baja Desert run but fun to see the trucks out there on the trails.
I know video doesn't do justice for showing how steep certain sections are, but that last hill looks steep as $%^!! Great video guys, more than anything I like how you can easily tell all you guys are good friends having a good time together.
Really need to do these comparisons with each person driving each vehicle. No opinions if only driving one vehicle.
I'd like to see a best FAST off-road contest. I live in east Texas where our off-roading is muddy fields, but in the woods too. I feel like a Raptor would be the most fun, but would have the biggest chance of not making it through the trees.
Andre: Well you're the hippo (walks away) 😂 Andre is the best!
Out of those 3 I would pick the raptor the raptor looks sooo good and it performs great
you guys know what we never see up on the high backcountry of Colorado?
Dodge TRX's and Raptors. we do see the galdiators, but they are usually at the wrong end of a tow strap. the defenders are usually down in the golf course parking lots or at the repair place.
tacos , 4 runners, and highly modified jeeps are the way to go where the going actually gets tough.
So the Defender didn’t touch anything, carries more (about 2x), tows 7000lbs and costs less than half the field 🤷♂️
That's an excellent video with good humour ...
Tommy got the most potent vehicle in the both episodes with the least amount of skill to handle them
someone count how many times Roman said SLOW SLOW SLOW lol all good, he just doesnt wanna miss the action
