For offroad, gotta say the Jeep makes the most sense to me, purpose built. What always amuses me though is that, when watching many of these kinds of tests and/or wilderness documentaries, the camera and rescue crews are almost always in a Tacoma or Land Cruiser. Around the world, those seem to be the "go to" vehicle.
I heard/read a funny comment once before , it went soemthing like this, if you want to go to the outback take a land rover if you want to come back take a land cruiser.
My father, master mechanic for decades, owned a large independent garage for over 50 years. Land cruisers, especially the older less electronic versions, were his favorite vehicles (also loved Ford half or 3/4 ton vans).
Is the Bronco not purpose built?
Uh, and the Bronco isn't purpose built?
@@EvilMerlin you can never beat an old FJ40. I wish they made them again
This is the most practical off-road test video I've come across to test the capability of a jeep and land rover. Must say I expected the disappointment with the land rover considering the company is focusing more on luxury+off-roading hence those tyre proportions and other compromises what the other two vehicles come with
Yeah the Land Rover sucks on these American Trails but if you take it on some grassy British kind of land with a little bit of axle twister here and there the traction control is pretty amazing. I just like the fact that the traction control does work so great when needed. I am biased though I own a Land Rover but it's an old school Discovery 2 with traction control that works great and solid axles with no sway bars so I kind of get the best of both worlds. I do like the concept of the traction control being aggressive because if all you have is an open diff or a locker it's kind of nice to have something to not have to use the locker because the locker can sometimes be necessary but also hinder steering. But if you have traction control that works really really well it's just automatically happens and then it's off and you don't even know it and there's no thinking about it. And the one on my old disco too is actually pretty reliable it always works great. I've seen other videos with the Bronco and it's pretty damn impressive because it handles better on the street than the Jeep yet it still has front and rear lockers with decent articulation for ifs and Towing more than the Jeep
Seeing the IFS swaybar disconnect under load in real time was really cool.
Agreed! Seeing the difference it makes in practice (rather than in theory) was super helpful for people who aren’t that familiar with off roading.
Strait axle still wins with more droop the down side.
Agreed
I’ll say, no matter what. you guys really went for it this time! I don’t even see people like Motortrend going this hard. Props!
This is just an average 4x4 trail in colorado. I live an hour from this trail and have done them all.

If I stacked just a couple more rocks I could get my wife's Elantra over that 1st obstacle.
I was thinking the same thing. If I stack a enough rocks at the right angle I'm sure my AWD Fusion will go up it.
My gen 2 crv would have made it to the top. Being small and being able to pick your limes definitely has it's perks
I'm also pretty sure my car tires wouldn't puncture rolling over either of those rocks given I've been over sharper edged potholes and kerbs. If my car weighed an extra ton maybe it might have though.

I expected the new defender to be a bronco but it turned out to be a bronco sport!
If the bronco sport badlands had the same max ground clearance as the defender the optional off-road wheels and tires that you can get on the sport would have probably faired better than those 20 inch rims on the defender lol
It's even worse !!
Yeah, it’s not really a fair comparison. You have the top off road package on both the Jeep and the Bronco VS. the decidedly non-off road options on the defender. Goodyear tires have the sidewall interfaith of a wet paper bag. Not to mention they didn’t remove the rocks they stacked for the defender. It looks really easy when they’re already there!
@@meptwal That's a landrover problem of available options.
@@feedtheagle6851 no, the options are available IF you can be patient enough to not buy one without. Despite the hate from ignorant people, these things are selling like hot cakes. That doesn’t help with junk stock tires, but does anyone who is serious off-road in stock tires?

20:33 Is a perfect example how well the Bronco performs off road.
Just beautiful
22:17 shows how a solid front axle can't be matched. Way more flex. Love the new Bronco, but Jeep is still the superior off-roader.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Great job. I'm sure that Bronco will be the next vehicle for me in 2022~
To Tommy’s question, the Bronco articulation surprised me, but watching the two in the crossed up slow dirt section, Jeep visually did a better job.
They had slightly different lines and angles as they approached the first dip. If you watch them as they are both in the first dip I'd have to call it a tie. The Jeep definitely didn't win.
Bro both were in different angles and line you definitely can't say wrangler has better articulation ! Plus this is not a Badlands 2 door which has way more wheel travel flex than the 4 door wildtrack which is more towards the desert racing so the actual comparison will be when the 2 door badlands will be included
@@nadirkhan7435 The Wrangler won plain and simple. The articulation with a solid front axle will always win. Break out the protractor ya soy boy Bronco fans.
Yes I agree the Jeep clearly has far more articulation despite Ford's claims of the Bronco having more.
@@Lex-Rex The Bronco Fanbois are also forgetting to mention the extra height from the 35s vs 33s on the Wrangler. That requires less travel/articulation for the Bronco for ground contact vs the Wrangler on smaller tires. Throw some 35s on the Wrangler, or 33s on the Bronco, and you will see the gap get even bigger in terms of how much better the Wrangler can articulate.
Now this is what REAL off-roading looks like
Holy Cross is a real trail , but this one is ok for stock
I'd be thrilled to have either of those trucks. Both really impressive vehicles .
Im not biased towards jeep or bronco but that jeep definitely looks like it has greater articulation.

Yep, almost as good as a Bronco.
They got competition now
everyone is freaking out about the $70k landrover that was damaged when really we should be pouring one out for the sharply dressed rock that was just minding its own business when it got so scratched up by a giant metal beast
Good to see the bronco live up to its name. I like it. I think the two door would have been the better option
All the other automotive publications are shuddering at the sight of real off-road testing of off-road vehicles. GASP. TFL is doing what readers/viewers have wanted for 25 years.
Yep - much respect for doing what scares the others…
I'm surprised the Land Rover corporation allowed them to destroy a vehicle like that.
Subscribed! I personally felt that it looked like the jeep had the easiest time making it up the trail and the electric mode really sets it apart from the bronco
The Bronco did it easier come on!
Took a look that the tires on each, and knew right away which one wasn't making it back. You can put all the fancy traction management systems you want on a vehicle, but the tires are the first and most critical link. It's like trying to climb a mountain in bowling shoes.
But they said in the video at 15:30 that the Defender's tires were the "off-road" option and the most aggressive ones offered by Land Rover or should I say Land Robbers hahaha! It seems their factory options are not up to par with the Jeep's or Bronco's. I think at this point, it is obvious that the Defender is not a true off-roader and it showed the direction that Land Rover chose to take the defender, that is the luxury SUV route, just like a Range Rover.
I agree with you so much honestly, but In this situation the break over angle 📐 was the part hitting. A suspension lift would have been more effective for the money to get through this obstacle.
@@mariosac130 keep in mind the first Range Rovers were fully capable offroaders. They mostly stood apart from the defenders by not having the interior of a tractor. I think someone in the Ford marketing group messed up and wrote "17% more articulation than the Wrangler" when they were supposed to write "17% less articulation than the Wrangler" LOL.
Looking at the line it makes me wonder if the tire size played a factor as perhaps the rear was holding the front hostage. That spare tire from the Defender pushed the vehicle into a steeper angle on that right rear due to the extra weight. I guess TFL needs to try the flex ramp and see.
@UC3CCR49CSONgjbxKhgCp4lA someone ordered a Bronco and is in denial lol
The fact is both were in different angles and line you definitely can't say wrangler has better articulation ! Both are tie . Plus this is not a Badlands 2 door which has way more wheel travel flex than the 4 door wildtrack which is more towards the desert racing so the actual comparison will be when the 2 door badlands will be included
@@nadirkhan7435 I’m excited to see exactly how many times you are going to leave the same/basically the same comment on every pro jeep comment. Fascinating!
@@laraava Internet Explorer and Nadir have posted the same response 100x LOLOL. They each forget to mention that the Bronco is also on 35s vs 33s on the Wrangler, which is a taller tire and requires the Bronco's suspension to articulate less. Put the same tire on each vehicle and you will how much more the Jeep can articulate over the Bronco.
Guys - did you air down on the defender? And if you did, that's the reason you got the pinch flat. The lower profile tyres on the newer disco's and rangies shouldn't be aired down. Keep them at normal pressure as lowering them does not increase footprint at all and just increases the chance of a puncture, there's no point dropping pressure when the profile is low as you don't get any benefit and flats are common. Great video by the way!
Great job guys you guys are truly the best who test
That might actually be the first time Ive seen Tommy really loose his shit! Good on ya mate, it happens to the best of us 😁
Absolutely enjoyed this video and seeing that Bronco on the trail. The new kid on the block gets my vote.
I had a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with the 4.0 in line 6 cylinder not 4x4. But I could go through some tough places including mud. That thing was fun.
Gran video.. y yo me quedo con la Bronca.. sin dudas.. 👌🏼
Jeep looked like it had more articulation to me
