I own both a 4Runner and a Jeep and decided to write in case someone might be interested in my ownership thoughts over the years. My 4Runner is a 2006 Limited V8 (the 4th 4Runner I've owned - I had a '86, '88, and '94) and my Jeep is a 2012 Wrangler Sahara (with all options except front winch - it is my first Jeep). The Jeep Wrangler Sahara is an excellent off-road vehicle that has additions to make it a better daily-driver. The 4Runner Limited is an amazing daily-driver with additions to make it a bit 'better than good' off-road vehicle. My Jeep Wrangler Sahara came with Bridgestone Dueler A/T (replaced in January with identical tires) and my 4Runner tires are Yokohama Golander A/T G015 (replaced the original Bridgestone Dueler H/T). Driving in ALL weather conditions, BOTH vehicles are a.b.s.o.l.u.t.e.l.y exceptional! (Please note that was NOT the case with the 4Runner using the H/T tires - those were awful in winter / snowy driving). Noise level in both my Jeep and my 4Runner is EXCELLENT (the video above state the Rubicon was very noisy with wind noise and it would difficult to have a conversation - I think the difficulty comes from the Rubicon's tires, they are off-roading tires and duh? will make A LOT of noise on pavement). I've NEVER had difficulty carrying on a conversation in my Jeep - EVER - and that includes people in the back seat. As far as an 'over-all' quietness rating - I think the 4Runner would win…the thing to remember is that a lot of the interior of the Jeep is the metal of the Jeep - and the Jeep all comes apart. The 4Runner's NOT like that and with every close of a door (the sound is similar to a vault door shutting sound) it's more quiet inside - the Jeep door must be closed with purpose, meaning a casual push and the door won't shut…hahaha…it's a Jeep! Both vehicles have EXCELLENT driving visibility, in both window openings and large mirrors. However, the 4Runner has an amazing spoiler attached which is easily thought of as non-functional…but driving in downpour rainstorms that spoiler directs wind down the back of the rear window and almost eliminates all rain from hitting the window, turn on the rear wiper function and it's the most visible rear view in a rainstorm of ANY vehicle I've ever driven. (The spoiler is also designed to keep the exhaust fumes from coming back into the vehicle when the rear window is partially or fully rolled down.) Both vehicles have EXCELLENT performance. Please note, my Jeep is a 2012 model - the engine was redesigned for that year - and it really shows. So the daily-driving differences between the two vehicles are this: the 4Runner can fit 4 large men comfortably on a long 4-hour-trip to a concert in a major city with all their luggage. The rear seats are NOT jump seats but rather large full seats; a 6' 3" person could sit in the back seat comfortably. The V8 engine will NOT even strain under the additional weight of passengers and cargo. the Jeep can maneuver better in a parking lot and fit quickly into almost any space. The Jeep's short wheel-base and small turning radius make it FUN to drive! Speaking of FUN to drive, the Jeep wins here hands-down…every moment I drive my Jeep it 'feels' like and an 'adventure!' Seriously, whether driving to the grocery store or driving to the plant to work it 'feels' like an adventure - it's not an adventure, of course, but it 'feels' like one! It is truly amazing and I think ALL Jeep Wrangler owners can attest to this overwhelming and exciting feeling each time they drive. The 4Runner is fun to drive too but it's in an entirely different spectrum…for example, driving the Jeep is like meeting up with your guy and gal friends at a pub for some beers and darts and laughter - driving the 4Runner is more like sitting before a crackling fire with a glass of wine having a brilliant conversation with your wife while blizzard winds howl outside the windows. the 4Runner can tow more and can carry more cargo inside, plus the 4Runner has a roof rack for things like a kayak. When I replaced the tires, I did also replace the tire pressure sensors. Can't say the same for the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sahara…I purchased the vehicle (6 years ago) in 2013 exactly 1 year and 1 day from the day it was originally leased…I saw it over the Internet, drove to the dealer and bought it…it had only been on the market that day (approx. 6 hours before I bought it). Since then, over the last 6 years, I've had it into the dealer for repairs 6+ times…the rear seat needed fixing on its hinges; the front air dam rear bolts broke and it was hanging down; twice - on two separate occasions - for a fuel sensing indicator causing the engine warning to light; on another occasion the cylinder 6 misfire code turned out to be a fix covered by a Jeep bulletin (regardless of warranty status) for an entire head-gasket replacement on the engine and any components (ex. spark plugs, engine oil, filters) replaced during the work; my heater/ac thermostat and fan went out and required replacement; one recall for the heated mirrors causing possible fire; one recall for passenger air bag sensor malfunction; and as of two weeks ago my driver's heated seat won't work anymore (but I've NOT got that fixed yet), and the driver's seat leather has pulled apart at the seam.
Best recommendation. Skip the fancy creature comforts next time. Electronics break. I bought my jeep as base model as they come & have built it to my liking. Makes a world of difference with reliability.
I've had many of both, TJ's are tough as nails, I take care of my wheelers, I change all differential fluids transmission and transfer case every 40,000 miles on anyting I drive it will last forever
@@2_Bike_is_Life The trucks are fine. Recalls still fix the issue none of which would cause a full failure of the vehicle. My GX had its airbags recalled but I would never hesitate to go far off road
I have had a 95 Tacoma, 2001 Tacoma and 97 4runner (all with the 3.4) and they were all great on and off road. Same goes for my 01 sequoia (even if it's a boat). I think the new diesel Wrangler may be my first brand new car though 🤔
I have owned 7 jeeps since 1977 still have 4 of them.i owned one Toyota pickup a 93 when it was 10 years old had to part it out.frame rusted into and broke in half which was pretty common for them.
Lots of old Jeeps still on the road; it’s all about upkeep. The Toyota fanboys love their propaganda & stereotypes. Had a 4Runner and it was a gutless piece of shit - no thanks.
79 thump but honestly how many people will keep it that long. I know so many pavement princesses who trade in their car every 3 years cause gasp it has 36,000 miles. I would wager a lot don't consider reliability cause they don't keep them around long enough.
4 Runner's independent front end with a skid plate pushes too much snow opposed to Wrangler's solid front end. That's the main difference I see in this comparison. Better snow tires would probably help the Toyota but it's still gonna be pushing a lot of snow.
@@stone9882 both are good i think you juste need to give some care to you vehicule when doing offroad..one of my teacher have a 10' wrangler and its driven 75% offroad and he almost mever changed a single part exept breaks and other obv shit
That intro was sweet. The video was fun to watch and informational. The conversations you guys have are hilarious sometimes. You guys are awesome! Love the channel! You make it fun to watch vehicle reviews.
For starters, I have a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon that I actually drive off road. OMG, you get the two most bad-a$$ off road body-on-frame rigs and you compare them...on a snowy hill? And spend quite a bit of time talking about...the interior? To REALLY compare these vehicles you need to take them on steep rocky terrain. A-trac needs to be important. Lockers need to be important. Ground clearance needs to be important. Low-range transfer case crawling power needs to be important. *That's what they're built for!* Everything in this review could have been done by many other vehicles that would do poorly or outright fail in steep rocky terrain where these would shine. For example, full-size 4x4 pickup trucks that don't have the breakover or departure angles for the terrain that these do. While the information in this review is certainly valid, it really feels like you almost entirely missed the point of these vehicles and what sets them apart from all others. This review is like comparing two full-sized pickup trucks without actually towing or hauling anything (what they're built for) as part of the review.
Do you think a front locker is better than the crawl control. Crawl control is a neat feature but will it be equal to a front locker?? Having said that Inwish my Taco had at least a rear locker. It has Auto LSD BUT cannot use in 4 wheel drive
@@mikefoehr235 I don't have hardly any experience with the 4Runner, so can't say for certain. I was HOPING to learn more about that kind of comparison when I started watching this video, but was sorely disappointed. My instinct is that having a front locker (e.g. both front and rear lockers) is better in general, but it probably depends on the exact circumstances. I've seen cases where crawling is the best solution, so at least in some cases that may be the better answer. But gut feel is that having both lockers is generally best. I've certainly used mine to great advantage! For what I do, the unmatched articulation of a solid front axle is much better, and the Jeep clearly wins on that front, too.
ProCharliee id rather pay 60k for something that will last a life time rather than something that will last a year and then have to keep repairing it everytime I try to do something with it
@@noahjones3955 and 60k for what a truck with some basic offroad features the main thing toyota fans say is that the vehicle will last for a long time reliability isn't going to make the cut it in 2019 probably in the 90s or early 2000s it would but toyota needs to catch up reliable or not
No Names well the thing with other companies is they keep doing cheap things to their vehicles and making it look cool or good, like the ranger, ford off-road version says that you do all the shifting no matter what but in one of the videos I saw they were driving it and it got stuck in something the Tacoma and Colorado went straight through and the guy was shifting to see if he could get out, it shifted its self and got even more stuck, no one wants a vehicle that will shift itself when it gets stuck which will only make you more stuck
i`m glad they showed the vehicles in action...i`m so sick of fake reviews like the Fast Lane Car...those guys are trying to become famous while pretending to do reviews. all you see is their face and nothing but talk the whole time. and most video car reviews copy that camera on face and all talk format...i watch car videos to see the cars, not someones mug
@@anthonyjenkinson2710 i wouldnt mind the jeep lovin but the look at me part is more than i can take. even their thumbnails are absolutely cringey. and its all talk with very little action. i stopped watching tflc a long time ago
Jeeps are Superior to any Toyota, mostly in the mountains of Colorado....Go anywhere,do anything, strip the doors and top off, enjoy the outdoors or be cluttered up in the Outdated, Overrated, Overpriced Toyota
noscaryclowns Yes, time tested and proven(I had one),but long in the tooth now.An additional gear or two, and around 300 hp.would be the sweet spot for me.No turbo.
You gotta ask yourself a question when considering these vehicles. If you spend 90% of your time off road, and you have DEEP pockets... you buy the Jeep. If you spend most of your time on road and are frugal for repairs... you buy the 4Runner. Simple.
Love the intro! The Instagram tease definitely left the *big* surprise for the video 😉 I like the interior of the Rubicon over the Sahara I had earlier.
Save yourself the time of reading all these comments and just go buy a 4Runner and forget about it. Seriously there’s NO comparison of a 100% made in Japan vehicle and something made anywhere else. Your welcome 😎
For straight off-road capability, the solid axle, swaybar disconnects, front locker, better approach/departure angles of the jeep will win hands down. I'm a 5th Gen (2017) 4Runner owner and I've built it beyond the capabilities of the TRD Pro and it still won't do what a rubicon will do - i would love to squeeze 35's into my wheel wells but I rub slightly with 33's. That said, I prefer longer off road trips where I need to spend several hours per day in the vehicle. I also need to bring more crap. The rubicon will go everywhere I go, but not as comfortably. As for the entertainment system... as long as I can listen to something, i don't really care. Oil pressures, voltages, etc... Its a toyota, i don't worry about them. These two are both very competent but for those in the off-roading community, they each have their place.
Always loved the wrangler. Its good for our winters and it can be a convertible off roader in the summer. But the reliability will always make me buy Toyota.
I would love a jeep but im so scared of repairs. Im not a car guy and the mechanics i know all work with Toyotas. so for that reason i feel more comfortable having a vehicle i know they're familiar fixing. Wish i had the money to buy a jeep and if anything happens i know i can afford to fix it 😩
4Runner all the way! I have driven my TRD trail ever since 2016! It is the most customizable and baller truck I have ever driven. I will never get another brand of off-roader. 4Runners are the most beautiful trucks that always have held through. They may not be the most powerful but you can still have a hell-of-a-time.
Let me start by saying that I'm a forester and drive off-road nearly everyday, so i may be looking at these two vehicles from a different perspective than most. I spent time driving both in January and went with a 2019 Rubicon, although i went in thinking i was going to buy the Toyota. I had put off buying a Wrangler multiple times because of the weak interiors and on-road driving performance. But the new JL's are a different animal than all the previous Jeeps. The interior is pretty good, far better than the 4R. The ride is still pretty stiff compared to a road car, but it's impossible to make a vehicle that can do what the Rubicon can and still corner like a Porsche. I think with the JL, Jeep improved both the off-road performance from the previous generation and made a massive performance to the interior. And the undeniable fact is, there isn't another mass produced vehicle that outperforms the Rubicon off road.
No I’m a forester. Like timber and forest fires, logging and beavers and bears and shit. I drive all over the southeast managing land. #ghettooverlander
I’ll take the 4Runner. I currently drive an 04 sport edition and it is such a fun car to drive. Plus 4runners are made in Japan where they make sure they constantly inspect the vehicle for upmost quality.
Can't go wrong with either of them. I ended up getting the JLUR because of it's ability to remove the doors/roof but in an ideal world, I'd have the 4Runner for the weekday commute and a JLUR for the weekends.
Owned a 2011 Jeep Rubicon until 2017 it had 30000 miles on it. Would have used it more but never liked to take it on long trips. Purchased a 2017 4 Runner. I have only been back to dealer for free tire rotations and oil changes with 4 Runner in past two years. Jeep never had a dull moment. From leaking shocks to roof leaks having to blow horn to change radio stations no A/C no 4 wheel drive when weather dipped below 10 - 12 degrees terrible headlights. Do not get me wrong it is great to buy american but with the issues Jeeps have you really have to be a patriot to drive one. 4 Runner absolutely dead quiet on the high way, completely stable and maneuverable at highway speeds. Jeep Rubicon well you can loose your voice just having a conversation on the highway. Emergency maneuver and then we are talking off road.
jeep = just empty every pocket. own one before ,brought that as a brand new in and out to dealership every few month... electric problem, oil leak....etc. after that own a bmw x6 ... even worst than jeep. dealership every half a year. now own a toyota tacoma never been than happy.
This is my first video I've watched from this channel and now I'm hooked! James and Thomas seem to have really good chemistry between each other which makes them quite likeable.
Sorry toyota all day those things are built like a tank 400k no problem grandfather had a 86 tacoma with a 22RE tach basically ran out of numbers it reset to zero lol now its a low mileage car again hahahaha...
My 4Runner has 200,000 miles on it and it's still going strong. My friend just sold his Jeep... It broke at 100k miles... I actually really like how old-fashioned and simple my Toyota 4Runner is. I don't like these cars with all the high-tech stuff. Always makes me feel like something's going to fall apart. The 4Runner is just always going to work and to get the job done. And it's a whole lot of fun to drive!
I've owned 7 Toyota's my entire life, driving each one past 200k miles with no more than a starter going out on all 7. My brother has a 600hp supra with an all original block/head 250k mile 2jz. Just traded my 220k mile 13' Rav4 for a 2019 4runner TRD Off-Road, I can't get enough of driving it and have put it in situations much worse than this video without leaving 4high. It's a beautiful machine and feels like a proper truck.
As much as I like the 4Runner, NOTHING BEATS THE JEEP!!! It’s an evolution of on and off road prowess. FCA stepped up and totally put the Wrangler where it needed to be and it shows. The Toyota has more refinement but it should, it’s a Toyota; but it’s interior is a letdown and the transmission could use another gear. The Wrangler has moved up to a status that’s worthy of its price (almost). For my money a Sahara with leather, LED’s, body colored hardtop and an automatic is the way to go, (I have a family that can’t drive a manual). Thanks for the video, you guys always have good stuff. I just subscribed to you on the strength of this video. Keep up the good work.
My 13 Taco came with Dunlop Grandtreks...as useless as boobs on a nun. I swapped them for Goodyear Wrangler Durtracs...now those are decent tires for mud and snow...probably on par with what you got I figure.
I lived up in Montreal for a little less than a year back in 04. The first dusting of snow, sent my Infiniti G35, with balding rear summer tires, sliding sideways down Mt. Royal. I managed to get back to my apartment’s underground garage, and bought a pair of used Pirelli Snowsports, that made all the difference. The TRD in this video, however, would have no problem plowing through that snow with similar tires to the Rubicon, and still managed to get the job done with the “street” tires it had.
Abel Villarreal my dad has a cj 7 with 325k miles on it. He never had to replace anything on it except for tires. Now we have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler unlimited and it’s the most reliable vehicle my dad has ever had.
2019 jeep wrangler. Brought to you by FIAT. Crappies vehicles on the market. Not to mention it had a fiat engine. Blows up at 80k miles. Im currently trading in my 04 jeep for a 4runner
Jeep is one of the rare vehicles that maintains its own unique identity and serves its purpose in its own unique way. I love a vehicle that commands its presence on the road and loves what it does.
Last man standing probably why your video is private lmfao.. plastic is less expensive to replace if it gets messed up while off-roading. And it still looks nice.. you out here thinking you’re gonna get a Porsche that does off road or what?
It means you have a lot of fanatical loyalists who ignore the lack of dependability in a product because it looks cool and capability to go just a few more places. Sorry, but owning 4Runners all my life, I take them many places I have aided people who were stuck in Jeeps. There is no doubt this Rincon will go more places than this 4Runner, anyone who knows a hint about off roading understands that. But is that 1% of time you will need worth everything you give up in terms of real world comfort and comfort on road? If I want an off road toy, then I will buy one that will shred the Jeep off road. But I want one vehicle that will do it all, and do it all well. In that regard, the Jeep can't even come close. But most importantly, I want a vehicle that will get me deep in the country, on road that most Jeep owners would soil there pants, and I want it to get me home. There is a reason you Jeep people run in herds. Dependability has been and continues to be horrible on these, yet you still have a mass of people who make excuses and ignore it, I would say akin to those families who still claim their abusive father is a good person. Sorry, but I owned a brand new 2015 Grand Cherokee for 6 months. I bought it because I grew tired of the boring 4Runner and thought dependability was a little better than it used to be. Number one, you want an apples to apples comparison in vehicles, I think the Brand Cherokee is a better test, but my 4 Runners would have wiped up the floor off road. Regardless, this thing was in the shop 2 weeks after purchasing it and was back and forth totaling over 2 months in the shop for a myriad of major issues including tranny issues where it would not go in gear, pop out of gear, panels popping off after going off road, check engine the service center said was for a speaker I replaced (but never touched), etc. This thing was pretty, was comfortable and had a powerful V8 with great gas mileage, but what good was it to me when I stopped going deep in the outdoors because I was in fear it would never make it back. Say what you will, but I never felt that way with my 4Runners. Needless to say, I sold it after owning it for 6 months, lost my @$$ in terms of money, yet still had a huge grin on my face when I left with my current 4Runner. Never again will be be complacent. What good are options and capabilities if you can't use them? And that is also when I realized just how crazy you Jeep owners are, because I joined many groups to see if they had the same issues I did. It was when I found that you guys recognize Jeeps are junk, but don't really care. You work around it, all because the product looks cool. Well, I need more content than that...
@@Firefuzz11 I bet, I have a new JLU Sport with the same hardtop that was reviewed. It certainly isn't catastrophic, lol, but yes its part of the territory with owning a Jeep. Love mine to death💪🙏

This review is like comparing two full-sized pickup trucks without actually towing or hauling anything (what they're built for) as part of the review.
i was thinking exactly the same thing !
Do you think a front locker is better than the crawl control. Crawl control is a neat feature but will it be equal to a front locker?? Having said that Inwish my Taco had at least a rear locker. It has Auto LSD BUT cannot use in 4 wheel drive
Mike Foehr just weld the diff and it will be locked permanently
Reliability -- Toyota wins hands down
Toyota keeps it simple, the more tech you have in a vehicle the more money you have to spend if it goes out
but for 60 k man....
ProCharliee id rather pay 60k for something that will last a life time rather than something that will last a year and then have to keep repairing it everytime I try to do something with it
@@noahjones3955 most vehicles can last if you take care of it
@@noahjones3955 and 60k for what a truck with some basic offroad features the main thing toyota fans say is that the vehicle will last for a long time reliability isn't going to make the cut it in 2019 probably in the 90s or early 2000s it would but toyota needs to catch up reliable or not
No Names well the thing with other companies is they keep doing cheap things to their vehicles and making it look cool or good, like the ranger, ford off-road version says that you do all the shifting no matter what but in one of the videos I saw they were driving it and it got stuck in something the Tacoma and Colorado went straight through and the guy was shifting to see if he could get out, it shifted its self and got even more stuck, no one wants a vehicle that will shift itself when it gets stuck which will only make you more stuck

Scotty: “Buy a celica”

4Runner is king! 4Runner is better than everything except maybe the Land Cruiser lol
Lets appreciate the fact that these are not crossover mall crawlers. I have love for both! 😎👍👍
You're a forester.... do you mean an arborist or?

No need to watch 4 Runner hands down!!
