This video makes me feel really good about my 2013 4Runner Trail Edition. I love everything about it...including the interior. Such a capable vehicle...not one problem and no complaints.
I think the simple old school interior is actually a selling point for the Runner. It gives people who want simple, tried and true reliable technology an option. I believe the interior matches the exterior, power train and body on frame construction, being that it keeps the truck as simple and as technologically free as possible so that there aren’t anywhere near as many things to break or fail years to come, and that’s what consumers of the 4Runner love about it. That’s why the 4Runner is wanted. If they updated the interior with a bunch of new tech, it would start to lose its heritage and it would lose the consumer base that appreciates it as much as they do, including myself. I bought mine because it was simple and there isn’t much tech that can fail, especially compared to any of its cross shopped competitors

Oh my gosh, that was amazing! Most reviewers would’ve tapped out long, long before. When I saw you turn around and go back through, I almost died laughing. Love your reviews as you always put the trucks to proper work. Great video and proof of that TRD Pro’s capabilities, despite the interior inequities. Two thumbs up!
What a beauty. I would be completely satisfied with the base trim. Well, maybe the trim with a sunroof. I don’t care if it’s “old”. It’s simple and it works
make sure you get the rear axle locker option. without it all you'll end up having is a nice reliable truck that's got a less than average success obstacle crossing potential.
Awesome video. I have a 2013 4Runner Trail with the KDSS and CRAWL control. The one thing I've learned about the CRAWL system... You need to give it more time to work than you think. I was showing off my 4Runner, clad with Goodyear DuraTracs, to some friends in some heavy snow. I tried to plow throw some deep, super heavy snow and found myself pushing snow over the hood and high centering the truck. The snow was at least 4 feet deep, and none of us could open a door. I tried everything I could to reverse out, but I couldn't get it to move. I switched to 4-LO, put it in reverse, and actived CRAWL control. With all the crazy noises, the truck didn't budge for at least 10-15 minutes. Then all of a sudden, it started to inch its way back. Another few minutes went by with the truck slowly pulling itself out. When it finally gained traction, it literally shot itself out of the hole we were in and sent us back to where we came from. It was the most amazing thing I've seen a vehicle do. I love this truck more than most people.
I hope Toyota (or Roman) didn't give you too much grief about this little adventure. It's seriously the most hardcore off-road review I've seen on ALL of youtube. Loved it.
EVERY OTHER VEHICLE REVIEW “uh, not enough soft touch, needs Apple Car Play, 0-60 is a meager 6.5sec, only gets 27mpg, infotainment is slow” EVERY TOYOTA REVIEW “as you can see here, resale value and reliability excuses our test mule from any criticism. We love the old school tech, big knobs and no infotainment system. It won’t put you back in your seat, and the fuel economy is low, but I mean, no one buys a truck with mpg in mind. Definitely a value at $50k” TFL REVIEW “let’s actually drive it as advertised and see what happens”
You are one of the best person I saw testing these vehicles . This video should be played in every TOYOTA dealership. Great job, keep doing what you do man.
When I bought my FJ cruiser in 2011 the toyota pamphlet said they made the buttons big so you can use them with gloves on. I prefer the simple controls even if it is a little dated.
And the relatively simple hardware will guarantee it to last for 2 decades or so without any issues. Going through desert and other finedust environments won't go well for sophisticated hardware. Its sold worldwide, not just for Canadian environment. But what an awesome vid. Toughest review trail I've ever seen.
By far the best hydro line run by far. The 4runner is a tank! You don't need all the extra crap, just simple use controls and you're good. I have a 2000 and looking to upgrade to something like this. Good video!
Proper review and test for an SUV like this! The 4runner is one of the last of its kind of really rough and rugged SUV's that can do so much more than the grocery-getter crossovers that have taken over the market. Its awesome to see that this legend lives on in the form of a properly styled, powerful, and capable SUV. LONG LIVE THE 4RUNNER!!
Awesome review! You're giving up on crawl control too quickly though, if you really want to test its limits. You can seem completely stuck beyond the help of crawl control, but if you let it sit and work for a few minutes (not seconds) somehow it eventually works the truck out as if by witchcraft. It can be quite confounding to watch- for what can seem like forever you'll see no visible progress, and then eventually, with no other noticeable change, somehow you're climbing up, out, over and onward again.
Very, very impressive! This dude can drive & that 4Runner seems to get the job done!!! I hope Toyota doesn’t give you any grief for beating it so hard, that’s the best Toyota ad I’ve ever seen!
That is a freaking awesome looking 4Runner but also you are like one of the greatest truck reviewers on RUclips you're not afraid to actually put the trucks to use. Great video
@@rono33 You will not be disappointed. Do not be afraid to negotiate the price. They have to make room for newer models and you need to make more room in your bank account.
Way to go, Stephen! TFL is known for real-world tests, but this is the "real deal" of real-world tests. Slick rock (which really isn't slick at all) and sandy gravel are interesting, but your hydro line is much more like the kind of terrain that off-roaders will encounter in most of North America. Nice to see your dad behind the wheel and behind the camera because you know that Motoring TV would never even attempt this! (I hope Toyota doesn't pull the plug on you)
You know what we like about you? It's the fact that you go off roading like it's ment to be. You drive like a true wheeler and not back down at the slightest obstacle or just show us a video of the 4x4 crossing some loose rocks on a straight road. ( Like any 2wd can go through ) #Respect and keep going!
Very impressive. I thought I had been a bad ass by taking my brand new 4R TRD Pro to Payson, AZ, put 250 miles on it on the first day, bathed it in dirt and put a first dent on it before having owned it for 24 hours. I did nothing. I'm just a weakling. Now THIS is true love, fellas!
Iv got a couple of 3rd gens a 97 and a 99 both 4 cylinder 5 speed stick. There awesome! Much smaller and nimble then the new ones. Honestly I could drive them for 10 more years easy. By then I should be able to get one of these TRD pro beasts for cheaper. That ice was unbelievable!
great video Stephen, You have just made Nathan jealous and he is probably thinking up one to out do this one. Canadian press vehicles are set out differently than the USA. Hydro lines are some of the worst off road areas you can pick to drive off road because i have been on them in Manitoba. We did a Little more than you ,we were also driving a big ford off road truck with 15' of ground clearance and 36' tires. Not a stock 4Runner, you hit it out of the park Stephen
I have to disagree about the interior. I hate modern interiors. Too many screens and too much light. I look at screens all day and work and home. The last thing I want is to look at more screens in my car. I'm sick and tired of screens. Real chunky knobs offer unquestionable functionality and reliability.
Those screen allow cars of today to have very few knobs. Because what a knob does changes according to what's shown on screen. Without the screen, the car will be filled with switches and knobs to achieve a basic level of comfort and functionality.
Agreed, thats why i wont buy a new vehicle. Im fairly confident my 1999 toyota 4runner would get through this. And i love the 3.4l, best gas motor ever made in my opinion
Oh my God I have my 4runner and then I have a Nissan rogue that my girlfriend drives and we absolutely hates the touchscreen so much because we have to sometimes tap 2- 3 times on the screen to get to something and it's not very user-friendly especially on the road. On the 4unner it's a different story and much easier.
So totally Canadian at 10:09 when son, stuck up to his nostrils in ice and filth says "What do you think, am I totally turtled?" Father says "Looks pretty good." Son: "I feel like all the ice is under the belly." Father: "Could be." LOL!
Good job testing it. This is a real test. The mud. The snow. The thick ice. The steep hill. Bravo. You didn’t baby it and wimp it. You busted it’s butt.

A lesser man would have just given up - really respect you for taking us through this challenging journey!!
@@ChuddleBuggy I think you are under rating an sr5 4wd. There are plenty of videos opposite of your statement.
@@ChuddleBuggy All 4WD versions have ATRAC. It's very capable without locking the rear axle.
That is true that the A-trac system makes the vehicle very capable but when the conditions get this gnarly there is no substitute for a locker!
Finally someone that truly TEST a 4x4
Those cheap plastics and old school simplicity is exactly what we love about the 4runner. Beautiful test, Defender 110 Gods will be proud.
You have to have balls to do that in a review video! Much respect, the best review I’ve ever seen.
That was friggin awesome.....Oh Canada! If this video doesn't sell 10K of these 4Runners, then nothing will. good job!
If you turn it in scratched up it's totally worth it. That was badass, and you just sold a bunch of cars. I want a 4Runner again.
Loved it.
Great review and love your enthusiasm and energy!!
Man, I love this guy. Such a great addition to the team. He worked the heck out of that 4Runner! Thanks for the quality content.
EVERY OTHER VEHICLE REVIEW “uh, not enough soft touch, needs Apple Car Play, 0-60 is a meager 6.5sec, only gets 27mpg, infotainment is slow”
EVERY TOYOTA REVIEW “as you can see here, resale value and reliability excuses our test mule from any criticism. We love the old school tech, big knobs and no infotainment system. It won’t put you back in your seat, and the fuel economy is low, but I mean, no one buys a truck with mpg in mind. Definitely a value at $50k”
TFL REVIEW “let’s actually drive it as advertised and see what happens”
"1.5" ice" when I see at least 3' ice! What a tank!
You are one of the best person I saw testing these vehicles .
This video should be played in every TOYOTA dealership.
Great job, keep doing what you do man.
Thanks to their durability, 4 runners are the vehicle of choice for many overlanding expeditions through the Himalayas.
Real world testing. Great job!
When I bought my FJ cruiser in 2011 the toyota pamphlet said they made the buttons big so you can use them with gloves on. I prefer the simple controls even if it is a little dated.
exactly. i just need it to do its damn job, cold when its hot, warm when its cold and defrost. Boom.
The large knobs are easy to use when I'm bouncing around on trails.
The buttons are big for a reason, big hands with gloves.
I have a Ford but from NOW ON I'm yelling "Cmon 4 RUNNER" everytime I'm off roading!
hahahha..
FORD FOR LIFE
Which ford you have ??
Over MSRP an f-250 and a old ranger
@@FlyingSparks12336 2013 f150 xlt 4x4 cab and a half ...nothing special but it's paid for.
Dude... This video is awesome..
Displayed Imagination video is awesome. Just his laugh is painful.
That’s a bit much to ask for from a production vehicle, it’s impressive it made it through all of that.
This is one of the best videos I have watched in a long time. Thanks for putting it up guys!
No way!! I didn't know that. That it takes a few minutes but it will get you out
I feel like in the snow it doesn’t work as good as sand or mud.
Very, very impressive! This dude can drive & that 4Runner seems to get the job done!!! I hope Toyota doesn’t give you any grief for beating it so hard, that’s the best Toyota ad I’ve ever seen!
The amount of fun you’re having there is contagious, felt like I was right there with you. Great review
That is a freaking awesome looking 4Runner but also you are like one of the greatest truck reviewers on RUclips you're not afraid to actually put the trucks to use. Great video
This video made buy a 2019 4 Runner.
Fernando Hidalgo - hahahahaha likewise.
Me too...
MEE THREE! No Sh** What a beast! Epic test. Epic results. Monster winner for me.Been shopping. I'm going all in 4Runner TRD next week.
@@rono33 You will not be disappointed. Do not be afraid to negotiate the price. They have to make room for newer models and you need to make more room in your bank account.
Craigslist be like 'great condition. Sparingly used' 😁
yeah. and I have a video to prove
:)
(I hope Toyota doesn't pull the plug on you)
Now this IS the real off-roading.
I am sick and tired of all the complaints about the lack of technology in this vehicle.
From Dusk To Dawn ikr like that’s the point
Yeah because screw progress lol
Yeah, because your human progress is exemplified by having technology stuffed in your face at every minute of your life.
It could use a nicer interior
Don’t fix what ain’t broke ... still works fine so why change it . Last of the old technology still in action
Best 4Runner review in all of RUclips.
The best car review I have EVER seen
4Runner’s are absolutely beautiful trucks, props to the designers.
IMO TRD 4Runner and Raptor have the best looking face of any truck.
Toyota should pay and sponsor you to advertise the 4Runner for them. Best off-road review I’ve seen so far.
Love this guy. He’s a great car reviewer. Looks like fun.
I'm never lending this guy my truck.
I'll lend this guy my crossover, so I know what components to upgrade/reinforce

Man I loved this review!
And MAN that 4Runner. Glad you didn’t give up on the truck and it didn’t give up on you. I really want one of these now.
THIS IS WHY YOU GET A 4RUNNER!!
4:00 big knobs are for use with gloves in the winter time
ONE hell of a review. Good Job. This man deserves bonus $$
You know what we like about you? It's the fact that you go off roading like it's ment to be. You drive like a true wheeler and not back down at the slightest obstacle or just show us a video of the 4x4 crossing some loose rocks on a straight road. ( Like any 2wd can go through )
#Respect and keep going!
Exactly!
That was absolutely badass. That color really is nuts! Great video!
just broke my wrangler by watching this
that was funny! Probably true!!
Hahahha.
What does that mean ?
analyst pamper ROFL
Haha a Rubicon would walk through that.
This off-road review make gold mine hill look like a stroll through the park. Great job TFL Canada.
So proud to say that I own a 4Runner off-road vehicle!!!
Me tooooo!
Me TOO 94 4runner baby still kicking up dirt! 😊👍🏾
Love mine!
Me too. 2019 trd off road . I'm loving it!!
Good job TFL this guy is the perfect addition to the team!!!!! Tfl only getting better
Best review I’ve seen on TFL! And I’ve seen a lot. This kid has potential.
i see this car in my future, now just gotta convince the wife its the perfect vehicle for her :)
It's this review in part that pushed me over the edge to buying 4Runner Trail Edition. I got it two months ago, and I freaking love it.
2 years later and I bet That thing is awesome as ever
great video Stephen, You have just made Nathan jealous and he is probably thinking up one to out do this one.
Ditto....I want big easy buttons and knobs. Not this fancy touch crap that isn't responsive in the first place.
Those screen allow cars of today to have very few knobs. Because what a knob does changes according to what's shown on screen. Without the screen, the car will be filled with switches and knobs to achieve a basic level of comfort and functionality.
Agree, pretty hard to press a tiny button while ripping the backroads, attempting to turn the ac on ends up accidentally calling someone haha
I don't know of Toyota allowed you guys to do that, but if they did, hats off to them man. That's freakin awesome!
I love the interior and the big buttons that work. New tech means more stuff u never need.
I love this. Everyone else take notes, THIS is what a true off road test is. Driving over light snow in a forest is not.
So totally Canadian at 10:09 when son, stuck up to his nostrils in ice and filth says "What do you think, am I totally turtled?" Father says "Looks pretty good." Son: "I feel like all the ice is under the belly." Father: "Could be." LOL!
Anthony C that's crazy how I came across your comment at the exact moment in the video he got stuck that truck is awesome
That blue color is sick!
Wow this was a tough review on a $40k plus vehicle! I’m very impressed Toyota should be proud!!
Good job testing it. This is a real test. The mud. The snow. The thick ice. The steep hill. Bravo. You didn’t baby it and wimp it. You busted it’s butt.
"If I could just use that inch." Story of my life.
