I consider "Fuel" one of the most underrated rock bands in history.

Probably. But the reason why I feel the 90’s were special was because it was the last decade before technology and social media ruined so much shit. It was the last time where people actually hung out with each other. Not fucking glued to their god damn phone all the time. It was the last decade where parks were filled with people playing basketball. Kids riding around in their bikes. And so much more. That simply doesn’t exist anymore. That’s why the 90’s are so special.

This song is a masterpiece in terms of songwriting. The way it progresses slowly and then boom, in comes the distortion and drums, while pre chorus and chorus go back in forth in different directions. It’s like 2 separate songs combined into one. Love it. Extremely underrated song.

She calls me from the cold
Just when I was low, feeling short of stable
    And all that she intends
And all she keeps inside, isn't on the label
    She says she's ashamed
And can she take me for awhile?
Can I be a friend, we'll forget the past
    Maybe I'm not able
And I break at the bend
We're here and now, but will we ever be again
    'Cause I have found
All that shimmers in this world is sure to fade
    Away again
    She dreams a champagne dream
Strawberry surprise, pink linen and white paper
    Lavender and cream
Fields of butterflies, reality escapes her
She says that love is for fools who fall behind
    And I'm somewhere in between
    I never really know
    A killer from a savior
'Til I break at the bend
We're here and now, but will we ever be again
    'Cause I have found
All that shimmers in this world is sure to fade
    Away again
It's too far away for me to hold

Legit, one of THE greatest songs of all time. Any band, any genre. This is my #1 example of a song I can listen to a thousand times over and never even BEGIN to get tired of it. I have to try very hard not to sing along out loud when I hear it, no matter where I am and regardless of how much my thin voice cannot even BEGIN to match Brett Scallions. I won't lie, this is one of the few songs I cry to. I remember clicking with this one instantly the first time I heard it. Something about this song reminds me of hard times and makes me grateful I had music like this to connect with and get me through. Sometimes life is hard and love is really painful. That's what makes it life, and I'm glad music is there to pick me up in those hard times. To Fuel, thanks for this gem-- your work does not go unappreciated.

    Lyrics
She calls me from the cold
    Just when I was low
    Feeling short of stable
    All that she intends
    And all she keeps inside
    Isn't on the label
    She says she's ashamed
Can she take me for a while?
    Can I be a friend?
    We'll forget the past
    Or maybe I'm not able
And I break at the bend
    We're here and now
    Will we ever be again?
    'Cause I have found
All that shimmers in this world is sure to fade
    Away again
    She dreams a champagne dream
    Strawberry surprise
    Pink linen on white paper
    Lavender and cream
    Fields of butterflies
    Reality escapes her
    She says that love
Is for fools that fall behind
    And I'm somewhere between
    I never really know
    A killer from a savior
'Til I break at the bend
    We're here and now
    Will we ever be again?
    'Cause I have found
All that shimmers in this world is sure to fade
    Away again
It's too far away for me to hold
    Too far away
It's too far away for me to hold
    Too far away
    Ah-ow
Yeah, it's too far away for me to hold
    Too far away, ah-ow
It's too far away for me to hold
    Too far away
It's too far away for me to hold
    Too far away, ah-ow
It's too far away for me to hold
    Too far away
    Guess I'll let it go

My Mom and Dad used to sing this to me when they were pregnant with me. I remember from a young age always loving this song. I still to this day get chills from this song when I hear it. Now I’ve grown, and finally understand how minuscule my wants were as a child, and how as an adult now I’m struggling to keep up with the bare necessities still pining for a life not driven by how much money you have. The bridge is no longer a song for my parents to sing to me as a baby, it’s now grown to be my cry for validation from all the death and heartache.

I was literally in HS when this song came out, became popular, and somehow faded behind other bands songs that had a more mainstream or catchy vibe. But it's lasted, and stood the test of time. The essence alone of this track encompasses the 90's better than any other song. A great time, and one we all miss. 9/11 changed our generation, and not for the better. It stole our innocence, our future, and our hearts.

Reconnecting with this song brings all of those feelings flooding back, but now in my late 30s, I appreciate the beauty of this song and how it allowed me to see internally on so many occasions. Music is emotion. Music is beauty.
