I consider "Fuel" one of the most underrated rock bands in history. They definitely deserved a lot more recognition than they have to date. "Shimmer", for example, is without a doubt one of the best songs of the entire post-grunge era.

Probably. But the reason why I feel the 90’s were special was because it was the last decade before technology and social media ruined so much shit. It was the last time where people actually hung out with each other. Not fucking glued to their god damn phone all the time. It was the last decade where parks were filled with people playing basketball. Kids riding around in their bikes. And so much more. That simply doesn’t exist anymore. That’s why the 90’s are so special.

I won't lie, this is one of the few songs I cry to. I remember clicking with this one instantly the first time I heard it. Something about this song reminds me of hard times and makes me grateful I had music like this to connect with and get me through. Sometimes life is hard and love is really painful. That's what makes it life, and I'm glad music is there to pick me up in those hard times. To Fuel, thanks for this gem-- your work does not go unappreciated.
I have heard this song on the radio and on my dad's playlist but never knew the name. Today in my english class my teacher gives us a poem to analyse. The poem was called shimmer. We identified all of the literary devices and what the poem does well. Then he put the song on and I was mind blown.
This was a hard song to find back in the day, what with Staind having a song called "So Far Away" and Three Doors Down all over the radio with "Be Like That", whose bridge sounds like the chorus to this song but on morphine. At some point, I was convinced this song didn't exist, that I had just imagined it. Boy was I happy to be proven wrong.
NCS... didn't expect to find you here of all places. I used to watch you all the time when I was younger. I remember I discovered you in the middle of your Majora's Mask playthrough. Sorry to go on a tangent, seeing your username just reminded me of a much simpler time. I hope you're doing well, I just discovered this song and fell in love with it.
When I was suffering from crippling anxiety and panic disorder, and thought about killing myself, I listened to this song and made it through one more day.
Back when this song first came out I was planning to kill myself and I planned to have this song playing on a loop while I died. The line "everything that shimmers is sure to fade away again" really expressed how I felt back then.
She calls me from the cold Just when I was low, feeling short of stable And all that she intends And all she keeps inside, isn't on the label She says she's ashamed And can she take me for awhile? Can I be a friend, we'll forget the past Maybe I'm not able And I break at the bend We're here and now, but will we ever be again 'Cause I have found All that shimmers in this world is sure to fade Away again She dreams a champagne dream Strawberry surprise, pink linen and white paper Lavender and cream Fields of butterflies, reality escapes her She says that love is for fools who fall behind And I'm somewhere in between I never really know A killer from a savior 'Til I break at the bend We're here and now, but will we ever be again 'Cause I have found All that shimmers in this world is sure to fade Away again It's too far away for me to hold It's too far away It's too far away for me to hold It's too far away It's too far away for me to hold It's too far away It's too far away for me to hold It's too far away It's too far away for me to hold It's too far away It's too far away for me to hold It's too far away Guess I'll let it go
This song is absolutely timeless, it never gets old no matter how many times you listen to it. A testament to how amazing it is and how underrated the band Fuel is.
I’m turning 41 man. Trust me I know how you feel my dude. I’d be friends with you just because you know the feeling I have that I can’t explain to people no matter how hard I try.
This song holds a lot of heartfelt memories for me. Described my emotional life back in my late teens/early 20s. Reconnecting with this song brings all of those feelings flooding back, but now in my late 30s, I appreciate the beauty of this song and how it allowed me to see internally on so many occasions. Music is emotion. Music is beauty.
here recently i just started going back to older songs that i didn't really listen to. i was a hip-hop type growing up and my environment kinda lead me to listen to one form of music. but i appreciate all music now that i'm older. and this song has so much heart and emotion. one of my favs at the moment.
I was literally in HS when this song came out, became popular, and somehow faded behind other bands songs that had a more mainstream or catchy vibe. But it's lasted, and stood the test of time. The essence alone of this track encompasses the 90's better than any other song. A great time, and one we all miss. 9/11 changed our generation, and not for the better. It stole our innocence, our future, and our hearts.
The nostalgia causes me physical pain. Life was far from perfect, but that magic was still around in the 90’s. Glad I got to experience it. Fuel was so good
Wow, do I miss this bygone era. I graduated in 2000, and miss very much the pre-9/11 America and music. This takes me back to growing up in northeast Indiana, and listening to 98.9 The Bear. A time where songs like these, STP, Days Of The New, Creed and other bands of the such were the jams. Great memories of that time. It is sad to see where rock has went to in going on 17 years. I miss the days when you could get in your vehicle, turn the radio on and hear good rock music, instead of this watered down crap you hear today.
Jason Dailey...class of 2002 here!! Was thinking about making a 90's cover band..think people would like it? Seen an 80s cover band that is uber popular...why not 90's? Highly under rated time for music...
Sometimes I wonder.. What it must feel like to have the ability to express feelings so deep, so beautifully.. Are you aware at the moment, how many people, for how long, you are going to affect? What a timeless masterpiece. God bless the people that use his blessings to touch others souls. Hell.. I'm not even religious. Listen to me go. I told you I wAnder. Best of luck to all of you. Remember, lifes short. Enjoy it.
"She says that love / is for fools that fall behind" That one line will forever associate this tune with 'that one girl'. I wanted her. She loved it, but would always run away; maybe b/c what I brought scared her. I'd get over her (sorta), and then she'd come back into my orbit when whoever she was with/chasing didn't work out, but stayed "too far away for me to hold". And once we finally got together she did her best to make sure it wouldn't work. And then it was over. Two years now. "Guess I'll let it go...."
It's like this era of musicians knew it was going to end, and they were the last of the greats but wouldn't be easily remembered except by us who were there.
I was born in 2005 but reading these comments gives me a sense of wanting to feel the nostalgia other people explain. I want it. I wish I lived in the 90s. damn.
Nostalgia is weird, it's getting sad from the thought of happy memories. Wait till you're 30, you will look back to being 15 and such. You are in the best years of your life right now and that's where the nostalgia will come later in life
@@joebeast15 Im speaking in general, most people in high school always complain about how they hate it and just want to hurry and be an adult but those are usually the best times of your life. When you have friends always around you and are carefree. I know everyone's situation but id says a large majority thinks like that. There's nothing better than being young and experiencing everything for the first time before you know it you're working everyday and never see the people you were once so close with.
@@Born2ShitForced2Wipe oh for sure. Getting older is both great and soul sucking. It sucks not seeing the people that were so important to you when you were younger. They become strangers with their own lives and their own concerns. It’s the way of things though.
One of the best bands ever. I took my five-year-old to see them 20 years ago. He sat on his daddy’s shoulders and knew every song by heart. They signed our entire CD. It was the best day ever. I think this is my actual favorite band ever.
@@emmarose4789 Why would you place a word that is composed of all capital letters in a sentence if it is not an acronym? That seems less THEN appropriate...correction denied!
My mom used to crank this song in the car everywhere we went. Now every time I play it, it gives me a heart warming feeling that brings me back to those days.
Been doing the same lately. And you are correct. Just hit so much harder now when you go back and listen. I read a quote recently that said "when you are happy you enjoy the melody, but when you're broken you understand the lyrics". That hit me at my core!
Sonny Justin Bieber posted a photo of him and his girlfriend captioned "feels". Obviously, it doesn't make sense, but that kid has next to no education, so it's not a big surprise. Anyway, people starting using it to describe feeling sentimental or something. It's really stupid and annoying but people are sheep. I guess they don't mind sounding idiotic as well.
This is real talent! I’m seriously stuck in the 90’s. Don’t need tic tok dragging me down along with snap chat! Please let me sit in peace reading books, listening to amazing music! Thank you very much!! :)
There was something really grown up about alternative music in mid and late 90s and I miss it so much and wish we had it all over again. After this it became very juvenile with, blink 182, sum 41 and such, not that I didn't enjoy it but it becomes unrelated-able where this is timeless yet at the same time you know it's 90s. Love it, just love it especially since I can relate to this song completely.
Sorry but Blink 182 sucks. Okay, maybe they don't completely suck, but they aren't great. You are looking at them emotionally because you remember them as a kid. Sum 41 was okay, but nothing spectacular.
+Henry TheGreatAmerican that's the whole deal brotha all these late 90s 00' bands were mediocre that's not to say they weren't talented and kinda groovy but all the same mediocre, once a genre peaks it gets watered down until u reach the current.
It sad that this song gets no airplay but it does for me it take a person to live thru what he sayin to appreciate it. im living thru it now my ex she doesnt believe in love but believe love from me but i gotta make the extra step but she has to first especially all the shit she put me thru here now will we be ever be again all i found all that shimmers in this world is sure to fade is to far away for me to hold but not to her.

I have heard this song on the radio and on my dad's playlist but never knew the name. Today in my english class my teacher gives us a poem to analyse. The poem was called shimmer. We identified all of the literary devices and what the poem does well. Then he put the song on and I was mind blown.
Your teacher is a badass.
That's cool
That’s awesome! Can you tell me some of those literary devices? Example?
Yeah if u u think about it……every song that has existed….its just a poem that has music playing. Its crazy to know if it’s just a poem or is it a song
Definitely my all time favorites. I dont think it will ever get old to me, its an awesome song
None of this exists...its all someone elses day dream...
NCS... didn't expect to find you here of all places. I used to watch you all the time when I was younger. I remember I discovered you in the middle of your Majora's Mask playthrough. Sorry to go on a tangent, seeing your username just reminded me of a much simpler time.
I hope you're doing well, I just discovered this song and fell in love with it.
I saw FUEL play with Three Doors Down.
@@spaceracer23 Me too. Think it was 2000 or 2001.
Bro you just explained my life to every song I try to look for
When I was suffering from crippling anxiety and panic disorder, and thought about killing myself, I listened to this song and made it through one more day.
Back when this song first came out I was planning to kill myself and I planned to have this song playing on a loop while I died. The line "everything that shimmers is sure to fade away again" really expressed how I felt back then.
Stick around, those thoughts are just temporary. I take meds, for the samething.
@@johnk.2508 glad you're feeling better, guess we all have these temporary thoughts.
This is a very powerful song indeed...beautiful in fact, fuel were the last great american rock band.
glad you all are still here.
She calls me from the cold
Just when I was low, feeling short of stable
And all that she intends
And all she keeps inside, isn't on the label
She says she's ashamed
And can she take me for awhile?
Can I be a friend, we'll forget the past
Maybe I'm not able
And I break at the bend
We're here and now, but will we ever be again
'Cause I have found
All that shimmers in this world is sure to fade
Away again
She dreams a champagne dream
Strawberry surprise, pink linen and white paper
Lavender and cream
Fields of butterflies, reality escapes her
She says that love is for fools who fall behind
And I'm somewhere in between
I never really know
A killer from a savior
'Til I break at the bend
We're here and now, but will we ever be again
'Cause I have found
All that shimmers in this world is sure to fade
Away again
It's too far away for me to hold
It's too far away
It's too far away for me to hold
It's too far away
It's too far away for me to hold
It's too far away
It's too far away for me to hold
It's too far away
It's too far away for me to hold
It's too far away
It's too far away for me to hold
It's too far away
Guess I'll let it go

I can't believe how underrated this band was
One of the best lines in music "She says that love is for fools that fall behind" So true
Who feels like you will never get bored of listening to this?
One of the hardest lessons in life
I listen everyday
Zzzzzz .....
When this came out, I was recently divorced with a 10 month old son, but I was in my second childhood somehow. anyways, this was a good one!!!
This song was played so freaking much when it was first out but it never once got old.
SOLID songwriting lasts! Here we are, still celebrating this wonderful song!
@Emily Schultz 2018 Novmeber!!
Thanks to Carl Bell. Fuel ain't so great these days without Carl. Songwriting has suffered significantly.
Driving on I-17 with my girlfriend and her best friend in my 94 toyota pickup in 1998. All 3 singing and loving life! Thanks Fuel for the memories.
This song is absolutely timeless, it never gets old no matter how many times you listen to it. A testament to how amazing it is and how underrated the band Fuel is.
Def agree
Beatles would sht themselves if they heard this

I was 14 when this song came out. I'm going to be 40 this year...God, I'd go back in a heartbeat...

Isn't it crazy how one song holds a thousand memories
"too far away for me too hold too far away"
here recently i just started going back to older songs that i didn't really listen to. i was a hip-hop type growing up and my environment kinda lead me to listen to one form of music. but i appreciate all music now that i'm older. and this song has so much heart and emotion. one of my favs at the moment.

Still hits hard! Sigh...gosh I miss my 20's....49 and losing time...
"I have found all that shimmers in this world is sure to fade away".Time proves it to be true.
Every 2-3 years this song works it's way back into my life and it's the only thing I can listen to for about 5 weeks.
Exactly!! Got to listen to it over and over when it comes back in to life !!
Me currently lol
I was literally in HS when this song came out, became popular, and somehow faded behind other bands songs that had a more mainstream or catchy vibe. But it's lasted, and stood the test of time. The essence alone of this track encompasses the 90's better than any other song. A great time, and one we all miss. 9/11 changed our generation, and not for the better. It stole our innocence, our future, and our hearts.
I say this all the time 911 brought a screeching halt to the good times of the 90s

I agree Danny
I loved this song back in the day, but now I’m 42 and it hits different. A lot that shimmered in the world has faded away.
God bless
Enjoy every moment because one day it’ll be just a memory.
I have some memories I would like to forget and that is why I try to enjoy the wonderful moments. Have a beautiful life!

The nostalgia causes me physical pain. Life was far from perfect, but that magic was still around in the 90’s. Glad I got to experience it. Fuel was so good
we're all the same
You sent that strait home, with the street lights...😒
Wow, do I miss this bygone era. I graduated in 2000, and miss very much the pre-9/11 America and music. This takes me back to growing up in northeast Indiana, and listening to 98.9 The Bear. A time where songs like these, STP, Days Of The New, Creed and other bands of the such were the jams. Great memories of that time. It is sad to see where rock has went to in going on 17 years. I miss the days when you could get in your vehicle, turn the radio on and hear good rock music, instead of this watered down crap you hear today.
What High School? I was born and raised in Fort Wayne and graduated in 2000. Love this music. So many songs bring back memories of better days

What a timeless masterpiece. God bless the people that use his blessings to touch others souls. Hell.. I'm not even religious. Listen to me go. I told you I wAnder. Best of luck to all of you. A reminder to lead singers everywhere.
You will not recreate the magic in a solo career no matter who is whispering in your ear.
Gwen Stefani
"She says that love / is for fools that fall behind"
That one line will forever associate this tune with 'that one girl'.

I was able to see Fuel in a small dive bar in Fairfax, Virginia, I Love this band, the best songs weren't played on the radio.
It's like this era of musicians knew it was going to end, and they were the last of the greats but wouldn't be easily remembered except by us who were there.
1998 was the pinnacle of '90s alternative rock. Shimmer was the chief hit that year
Shimmer was up there but Iris dominated 1998. It spent a third of the year at number one.
You are in the best years of your life right now and that's where the nostalgia will come later in life
@@Born2ShitForced2Wipe the “good ole days” are fluid and subjective. Depends on who you are talking to
@@joebeast15 Im speaking in general, most people in high school always complain about how they hate it and just want to hurry and be an adult but those are usually the best times of your life.

Ahhhh when music didn't suck. Miss the 90's. Great times
+Chechin De La Rocha I love 90s alt rock! And this song is just wonderful.
Well put! I agree.
You hit the nail right on the head.
Sorry but Blink 182 sucks. Okay, maybe they don't completely suck, but they aren't great. You are looking at them emotionally because you remember them as a kid. Sum 41 was okay, but nothing spectacular.
