I enjoy watching your channel. I am 68 and had a heart attack back in April of 2023 (three weeks after I retired). Luckily, it only manifested as a slight burning pain in my chest. My wife called 911 and I was rushed to the ER and had two stents placed. My heart ejection fraction was low and I spent three days in the ICU. After I recovered, it was recommended by my cardiologist that I try to get some exercise each day. I started out walking in small amounts and then longer distances as I felt better. I currently walk 3 1/2 miles each day at a 3 MPH pace. I stopped for a while last winter because of the cold and icy conditions that made it too dangerous to walk. This year, I purchased a small treadmill and plan to use it during the winter. My ejection fraction has improved to almost normal and I have lost weight and feel better than I have in years. Walking also seems to allow my thoughts to clarify and I think about issues and can often think of solutions.
Totally agree with you. I started walking a lot since moving to Italy in April and I can completely agree with this video and the benefits. I’ve been alive and it’s helped tremendously with my menopause too. Thanks so much
Such great advice, especially since mental health is not properly treated in my opinion. Thanks Dave. We certainly need to do more and encourage each other to maximize our health and wellness
When I go outside for my daily walk, it's exceedingly rare to see another person outside who's walking for the mere sake of walking. You only see runners with miserable expressions plastered on their faces, bored people walking dogs, or middle-aged or elderly couples. The concept of going outside and walking simply for the leisure and health benefits seems lost on most people.
I’m putting your theories into practice here in Yorkshire. My husband now struggles to walk the dog, so I’m doing it. It feels like an extra thing I have to do on top of everything else, but it’s good for me!
Same here in St. Pete, Florida. Super hot here though! 90f!! Been walking my neighborhood for the last 4 months, 45 minutes. I'm down the 12lbs. I had wanted to.
Great points ! I've definitely noticed an improvement in my mental health since I've been walking 10k + steps per day. I really have to make it a prority and make time in my day for it. Its definitely the best thing I do for myself besides healthy eating and cutting out sugar. I like to find different places to walk to make it more interesting.
I had an hour to kill today so decided on a brisk walk, but I was in a port town and the cruise ship had just unloaded its passengers. It was an hour of dodging traffic and slow moving tourists. There was a noticeable decline in my creative thinking! Also, I've used a key to remove a screw. Tomorrow its back to the desert.
I’m 66 this month, started counting my steps 9 months ago, have lost 30lbs or 10.2% of my weight and lowered blood sugar level. Still have a ways to go 👍
@@Kewlstickers same here. Lost 28lbs in 4 months, eating healthy, walking 5000 steps and moderate exercise. I’m 69. I get self motivated when I can see the results and benefits.
According to google...the average person has a stride length of approx. 2.1 to 2.5 feet. So it takes about 2000 steps to walk a mile. If you don't have a phone or smart watch you can still figure it out. 3miles=6000 steps😉
I’m 77 years old and would like to start a walking program. Recently, I started tracking the number of steps taken using my iPhone. However, I find that I don’t always have my phone on me when I’m walking about the house or yard. Those steps don’t get counted. Do you use a device to count your daily steps taken, and if so, what do you recommend/suggest I use to count all steps taken daily?
I think the steps Dave is talking about are deliberate walking steps, like going out for a walk. The steps around the house are just normal activity. That's my take.
I use a Garmin 255 watch, it tracks a lot of info, love my Garmin watch, it syncs info onto my iPhone. I’m 67 at the end of Sept. been consistently walking for over a year, so many great benefit’s, get out there. 🚶🏼♂️➡️
Tracking steps can help give some people a little extra motivation, but the important thing is to just walk. My recommendation is to start with a daily ten minute walk. Even if you’re not counting steps these walks are still a great investment in your health and well being. As you establish a habit and build your capacity and desire to walk more then you can walk longer than ten minutes. Over time, hopefully, walking will be something you really look forward to doing every day! I hope this helps. Thanks for watching
Good idea. Next week’s video is about my favorite benefits of walking as much as I do. I also filmed it in one of my favorite places to walk…Washington DC

I see 1 or 2 people that are walking for health benefits in a busy suburb of Detroit, I feel others seeing us walking for health may inspire them.
I think it depends where you walk. I see a lot of happy people who smile and say good morning at Creve Coeur Park near St Louis, MO
No they are on an electric Bike.
Walking is fitness and fun hiding in plain sight

At your level of fitness, what is your average walking pace ?
I walk between 3-4 mph
Can you please pass on the app you use to identify airplanes while you walk! Thanks
Does age matter, should there be limits, or if your good to go your good?
I’m not a doctor, but my gosh is to keep walking for exercise as long as I’m able!
