Those were my exact thoughts! Like inflate the pressure sleeves then read the baseline pressure and then give the arm more power the greater the difference between the baseline and current pressure. Also have 4 differen sections of the sleeve for each direction.
You will want to use fluid in those fitting bladders. Air wont give you nearly the resistance you're going to need without being under high pressure. But the beauty of it is is that you can use that for heat dissipation and force feedback.
You joke but these guys really are basically acting as a skunkworks for some of the most crazy ideas to come from fiction. I would not be surprised if at some point they do come up with something that has real life saving potential down the line.
there’s been a slight change of company policy concerning the use of the power armor suits. Umm, don’t. After learning of an unfortunate incident at the hacksmith involving multiple and simultaneous springlock failures, the company has deemed the suits temporarily unfit for employees
I think you may have started in the wrong order on this build. If you had started with the legs you could have had a lower frame that was strong enough to support all of the weight of the lower frame. Throughout the video you had issues where all of the weight was being supported on the shoulders and spine. Realistically you would want that weight as low as possible so that the user isn't the one that is actually supporting the frame but that the frame supports itself. In a way it is kinda like building a house and then putting it on its foundation. You can do it that way and I am sure that by part 6 is probably will come together nicely but like I said, it is a little out of order.
you would need to calculate in advance how much weight the legs need to support, knowing the weight by volume, of materials for every single component, plus that any additional mass such as jetpack or weapon systems. I am actually wondering if and how they'll safely get the mid section to bend and or twist while having room in the arm for an Iphone let alone a pip boy.
The reason why they are starting with the upper body first is because James had already done prior work on an upper body exoskeleton years ago. So, with most of the work being done there, they just built on top of that first because it would be easier. The lower is definitely coming though.
@@garyhaggleblat9294to be fair what they’re doing is the equivalent of Da Vinci drawing up flying machines 500 years ago Like we aren’t at the level of small powered exoskeletons (from what the public knows) so jumping to 3 ton bulletproof jet pack toting mechsuits powered by fusion reactors the size of a can of Pepsi is all but impossible especially with their limited civilian grade materials
This makes me happy, I hope that in the future there will be better and affordable Exo-suits/Cybernetics that can help people like myself with injuries. We want to help in many ways, but do to our limitations we unfortunately can't do certain tasks depending on what we have. Everyone has different struggles, we even have struggles that are not visible and clear to the human eye, it can be invisible. I hope that future generations will be taught, be kind, and understanding to people with struggles.
small suggestions that may help with issues: For the suit itself, try to have the shoulders not support any weight (basically have some empty space in between your shoulders and the power armor's internals, could be padding could be air), and have your lower half (legs and stuff) support it, so your shoulders dont die from basically lifting all that weight. if you have to have your body support weight, have your hips support as you can support much more weight (still not suggested as i don't think your hips are meant to lift up to 200 pounds of stuff in the future) also regarding the bar that is basically at your neck; you could try to change it out so it bends forward so its like the front section of a circle and you could build off that for a helmet attachment point (have an entire circle with hinges so it can bend forward when the power armor opens up from the back) and have that circle around your neck become an attachment point for your helmet. just ideas I came up with that may work and help you not die
Have you thought about using electromyograph sensors rather than a remote. This way, it would be controlled by muscle contractions, making it way cooler and also more natural to use. Also, 0:18 cool refrence tee hee.
The remote is temporary -- the system will utilize the air pressure cuffs as sensors to track your movement. Muscle sensors aren't very good -- very flakey.
@@hacksmiththe pressure cuffs themselves? Are you starting from a baseline pressure reading and moving in the direction the pressure increases? How much range of motion are you going for? Just the up and down? How will you account for lateral motion when manipulating objects?
9:52 -- you should weld some round tubing in your hinge holes. Without it, the edges of your square tubing will eventually wear ridges in your hinge pins. I speak from experience (20+ years of building Rose Parade floats, with pivoting mechanisms).
You know you could do a mock thruster pack on the back to give yourself more room and power for the power pack if you want. I for one wouldn't complain since I wouldn't expect you guys to make a fully functional power armor WITH jet pack.
The amount of electricity you would need to build a thruster with enough lift and can also fit in the suit is insane. No one on this planet has ever even designed such a thing as that entire field is still only theory.
@ like I said, a MOCK thruster pack just to house a bigger pump among other things. I know an actual thruster pack from the game is EXTREMELY difficult if not impossible to build currently.
I really like the open and close feature! if you've ever tried to wear an exo like I did you know it's the worst thing to get into and get out. Great work
I did a project last year on exoskeletal control systems using air bladders. Not sure if you're taking the same route, but air bladders easily create proportional control through integrated pressure sensors. Combine that with pressure transducers or servo flow valves and you've got a working system. I've uploaded a video of my project on my channel if interested, and I'll see you all in the livestresm 😎
Yeah and a bitch to set up, has to be custom fitted and set up for every single user and has a steep price point. Intuitively it may sound like a good idea, unfortunately it really isn't.
Dear editor, your efforts hasn't gone unnoticed. we are just too engaged with the video to leave to the comment section. Keep up the good work. with love, every viewer
Looks like Laila is bringing some fresh ideas, and looks to be in good hands with Bogdan mentoring this project. 👍 I had the opportunity to play with a "power frame" about 10 years ago, massive potential but still had a ways to go in terms of bulk and untethered capability. Seems we've made some decent progress, but the old roadblocks are still there.
Next time you guys make armor it might be a good idea to start with a frame designed to fit the pilot's specs first, so that the various parts of the suit can fit around the proportions of any of the testers. Then they can be comfortably inserted without fear of pinches or snapped backs, no matter the dimensions of the over arching suit. It might make things a bit more bulky, but there might be less "There's a giant metal rod when my chin needs to be!" type issues. Otherwise its exterior is looking awesome!
7:08 LOL yikes, thought that was going to be a 911 moment there for a second lol, the look on his face was like :O :O I guess if you're not careful, this kind of gear could easily break bones (not in this particular case but I mean in general being that all this equipment is very powerful)
When we pressure test compressed air systems on new installs we use nitrogen bottles with a regulator. We set the system to 180 and test for leaks. A nitrogen bottle and the right regulator would allow you to fill that air tank on the power armor over and over and over. The regulator goes to 3000 psi or some crazy amount. More pressure, more power. Just avoid burst pressures on all those parts. The best thing about nitrogen, no moisture. Tri-arc in Cambridge has the bottles, or Air Liquide
I think its safe to assume that the suit is going to use some sort of steel or other alloy for the shell, but for better ballistic protection i'd recommend putting an aramid (or fiberglass) liner on the inside to prevent theoretical spall from hurting the user and to offer additional protection like how older ballistic helmets did. The metal breaks up and slows down the incoming projectile, and the aramid layer spreads out the force further and catches the fragments. Fiberglass is a pain to work with and its bulkier but its a real cost saver and quite ballistically effective. Cheers from America!
@@vos2693 Steel plating and fiberglass is pretty cheap, and if theyre going out of their way to build something like this then it would be a pretty negligible cost increase. I take this more as a fun proof of concept inbetween a cosplay suit and something of practical use, just to innovate and have fun. Theres already lots of good cosplay solutions for suits like this anyways so thats why I think like this.
@@hacksmith Sounds like a good design to me! As long as the nanovite stays bonded over the complex geometry I think it'll work great. I'd be hard to get a good strong strike face without spending lots of money on fabrication otherwise, and it saves a lot of internal volume as well which I can imagine is much appreciated for anyone wearing it 😂
26:13 ....I know this is just for fun and all, but it was an obvious mistake to start on the top of the armor and not the legs, guys. If you do the legs first and get them working, it can hold the top half for you while testing the top half. Legs, spine/torso, shoulders, arms, head. That's the order you build your experimental power-armors. Designing the shoulders and arms separate helps with the pinching around the armpits that was mentioned a few seconds later.
Well the reason they started with the arms is because they had the base for it already seeing as theyve made a few exosuits for curling in the last, so whilst it makes sense to start from the legs, its probably better they started from the arms
I was so happy when I saw you were building this because when you announced your build of the mark 1 Iron man suit I commented requesting you to build power armor, now I know my comment you probably didn't even see, so I didn't influence the decision of making the armor, but it still makes me happy. GOOD LUCK!
Ok here’s an idea idk if your gonna see it but I think you should make a hydrogen reactor with a tank on the front to use as the “fusion core” in the back of the suit so you can use compressed hydrogen instead of compressed air for the strength of the suit ,and on the inside I think you should use electrodes to go on your arm so when your muscles strain to pick something up the pistons win kick in giving you strength, so you will have free movement , and strength at the same time. So nobody has to control it from the outside
I wonder if it would be worth making the width between the shoulder joints adjustable as different users will have variations in how broad their shoulder length is, same concept would apply when you get to the legs as someone who’s legs are longer would struggle to fit if the frame is to small, it may be worth it so long as you don’t need to rebuild any parts from scratch.
Idea if you make the power armor bullet proof, send a sheet of the material/materials to scot at Kentucky ballistics to test his biggest guns against it.
I do think you are going about how you wear it a little backwards. The inflated parts should only keep the person inside from being rattled around like the ball bearing in a spray paint can, not to use it for padding to support the rig itself. I agree with other commenters the bar across the chest needs cut out and bent so it is lower than the neck. To get the fit better, you need the legs and have the frame able to support it's own weight first. Then all the air bags or bladders do is keep the person snug inside the frame but not actually supporting any weight.
it fits a single virtual human who might be a horse jockey or long distance runner, not a range of actual scanned soldiers that goes from fit to super human muscle mass.
I feel like lifting an actual elephant with the power armour would be really cool. You might need some backup systems to keep the elephant safe, but it’d be really cool, especially if lifting the elephant could actually help with veterinary tasks. Crazy idea, but could be fun. You could even lean into the pet thing in fallout.
This is, deadass, the type of shit I imagine building out of a shipping crate garage and eventually, kinda taking over the world with (in the sense of being the final say in anything BIG, not directly doing stuff because I’m lazy), all without realizing that this shit takes at least 10 people (as I usually do when trying to do something way above my processing power)
I already play fallout 76, been playing it for over a couple years! I’m a sucker for fallout and it’s one of my favorites in the franchise! I used a lot of builds too! From unarmed to sniper to commando!
Okay possible future video idea here. What if you all took all the lessons you've learned from making power armor, power loaders, ironman suits and all that, and designed a "Power Suit" of your own? If you weren't beholden to following someone else's design, or the logic of video games or comics, what would you made to actually be a super soldier?
Take as much time as you need, this project has been long awaited and is also potentially dangerous and complex to simualte the actual movemnt and flexibility of Power Armor.

You will want to use fluid in those fitting bladders.
Air wont give you nearly the resistance you're going to need without being under high pressure.
But the beauty of it is is that you can use that for heat dissipation and force feedback.
The year is 2034.

They're more about getting views than building something actually usable ;)
The reason why they are starting with the upper body first is because James had already done prior work on an upper body exoskeleton years ago. So, with most of the work being done there, they just built on top of that first because it would be easier. The lower is definitely coming though.
Im sure once they build the legs, the weight issue on the normal human body will be minimal compared to what it is now
@@garyhaggleblat9294to be fair what they’re doing is the equivalent of Da Vinci drawing up flying machines 500 years ago
Like we aren’t at the level of small powered exoskeletons (from what the public knows) so jumping to 3 ton bulletproof jet pack toting mechsuits powered by fusion reactors the size of a can of Pepsi is all but impossible especially with their limited civilian grade materials
I hope that future generations will be taught, be kind, and understanding to people with struggles.
love the vibe of these videos. doesnt feel overproduced. just people building something. honestly could make them longer while still enjoyable i bet.
small suggestions that may help with issues:
For the suit itself, try to have the shoulders not support any weight (basically have some empty space in between your shoulders and the power armor's internals, could be padding could be air), and have your lower half (legs and stuff) support it, so your shoulders dont die from basically lifting all that weight. if you have to have your body support weight, have your hips support as you can support much more weight (still not suggested as i don't think your hips are meant to lift up to 200 pounds of stuff in the future)
also regarding the bar that is basically at your neck;
you could try to change it out so it bends forward so its like the front section of a circle and you could build off that for a helmet attachment point (have an entire circle with hinges so it can bend forward when the power armor opens up from the back) and have that circle around your neck become an attachment point for your helmet.
just ideas I came up with that may work and help you not die

Have you thought about using electromyograph sensors rather than a remote. This way, it would be controlled by muscle contractions, making it way cooler and also more natural to use. Also, 0:18 cool refrence tee hee.
the remote is temporary iirc
The remote is temporary -- the system will utilize the air pressure cuffs as sensors to track your movement. Muscle sensors aren't very good -- very flakey.
@@hacksmiththe pressure cuffs themselves?
Are you starting from a baseline pressure reading and moving in the direction the pressure increases?
How much range of motion are you going for? Just the up and down?
How will you account for lateral motion when manipulating objects?
Lateral motion is unpowered, so don't need any sensors!
@@hacksmithwhy dont you use the cuffs and muscle sensors to have more detailed data thats still reliable
Also good idea
Everything is possible...at least one time. But the rockets for a job would be quite spicy. And there is no fall damage immunity IRL.

Haha yep!

7:10 I fr thought bro got springlocked
Next time you guys make armor it might be a good idea to start with a frame designed to fit the pilot's specs first, so that the various parts of the suit can fit around the proportions of any of the testers. Then they can be comfortably inserted without fear of pinches or snapped backs, no matter the dimensions of the over arching suit. It might make things a bit more bulky, but there might be less "There's a giant metal rod when my chin needs to be!" type issues. Otherwise its exterior is looking awesome!
Awesome video, as always 😀. Also Bogdan looks super cool with the beard😎(noooo, whe did he shave it of😭😭)

Yeah we have skids of nitrogen tanks for our laser cutter. Use it often in our projects!
ever test inflating a space suit?
@mattw940 nope but I can't assume many people have to be honest. Challenge accepted. Where's the space suit at?
I think its safe to assume that the suit is going to use some sort of steel or other alloy for the shell, but for better ballistic protection i'd recommend putting an aramid (or fiberglass) liner on the inside to prevent theoretical spall from hurting the user and to offer additional protection like how older ballistic helmets did. The metal breaks up and slows down the incoming projectile, and the aramid layer spreads out the force further and catches the fragments. Fiberglass is a pain to work with and its bulkier but its a real cost saver and quite ballistically effective. Cheers from America!
This thing is unsuitable for military use, it's just cosplay piece. There is no use for expensive ballistic liner.
Check out our video on real life adamantium. The suit is going to be nanovate with Kevlar layers
@@hacksmith Sounds like a good design to me! As long as the nanovite stays bonded over the complex geometry I think it'll work great. I'd be hard to get a good strong strike face without spending lots of money on fabrication otherwise, and it saves a lot of internal volume as well which I can imagine is much appreciated for anyone wearing it 😂
That's why it's so brilliant -- it's just 3d printed plastic, so the geometry doesn't matter. Coated in nanovate, filled with Kevlar
This series has been so cool to watch, the energy is just great, brings me back to the first time I watched this channel.

That moment in iron man 2 of Justin harmer suit. 7:11
@@IZCSRIThat’s exactly the kind of scenario that I’m concerned about.
Ah yes my Favourite iron man light saber Batman guys
🤣
28:48 don’t get springlocked James😂

Make a space marine version. That would be wild.
Bethesda sponsored this project. Games Workshop would come down on them like the Black Templars.
@@supersaiyandiclonius3056and Bethesda, they would’ve lost a lot of money
12:58 let's hope that's not foreshadowing
I wonder if it would be worth making the width between the shoulder joints adjustable as different users will have variations in how broad their shoulder length is, same concept would apply when you get to the legs as someone who’s legs are longer would struggle to fit if the frame is to small, it may be worth it so long as you don’t need to rebuild any parts from scratch.
Idea if you make the power armor bullet proof, send a sheet of the material/materials to scot at Kentucky ballistics to test his biggest guns against it.
4:57 super reliable proceeds to fall and break
I do think you are going about how you wear it a little backwards. The inflated parts should only keep the person inside from being rattled around like the ball bearing in a spray paint can, not to use it for padding to support the rig itself. I agree with other commenters the bar across the chest needs cut out and bent so it is lower than the neck.
To get the fit better, you need the legs and have the frame able to support it's own weight first. Then all the air bags or bladders do is keep the person snug inside the frame but not actually supporting any weight.
Yes we need legs so the weight isn't supported through the vest
"It fits in Solidworks" is my favorite line XD
Pretty much
it fits a single virtual human who might be a horse jockey or long distance runner, not a range of actual scanned soldiers that goes from fit to super human muscle mass.
I hear that every day at work lol
I feel like lifting an actual elephant with the power armour would be really cool. You might need some backup systems to keep the elephant safe, but it’d be really cool, especially if lifting the elephant could actually help with veterinary tasks. Crazy idea, but could be fun. You could even lean into the pet thing in fallout.
