I had +3 pitting edema in my feet, ankles, calves, knees, and thighs. It came on suddenly. My doctor put me on the classic treatment of Lasix and Potassium. It didn't work. I started taking B1, decreased processed sugars, wore TED hose, as my feet felt like they were broken from the enormous pressure from the edema. Blood vessels ruptured, and the front of my calves split, the edema was so bad. I am not diabetic. I walk and exercise. Once I took control of my health....I stopped the Lasix & Potassium.....increased my Magnesium Taurate and B1 vitamin, along with B12.....the edema literally disappeared in 2 days. I lost 25 pounds in that time, too. My doctor was stunned that I cured myself. I am an ER/ICU/Trauma Nurse). Everyone should be more proactive in their own healthcare. Research, educate yourselves, and dedicate your life to your life. Thank you, Dr. Berg.....you ROCK!❤😊

‘mankind’ is no longer acceptable when referring to people. The word ‘people’ is inclusive for all genders, as demonstrated in the previous sentence. There are many inclusive words that can and should be used when referring to us all. Just a thought…
I have pitted edema in my right foot and ankle only when I eat gluten. It's so frustrating. When I eat ketovore in fine. Within a couple of days eating the S.A.D. it happens. I really wish I knew why it's only one foot/leg. Until then I'm confident in the ketovore way of eating😊
@@1stDoNoHarm63. I have the same thing in both legs, but one leg is much worse. The pain in my legs is terrible. I wear support hose 24/7, I can hardly tolerate them off long enough to shower. This Dr’s explanation is the best & easiest to understand of them all. Low carb/ carnivore eating has made a huge improvement for me too. But I am still unable to walk much at all & it is with terrible pain.
Dr Berg notes Dr Berg talks about edema causes and remedies. Swollen legs are often a symptom of edema and are typically blamed on liver, kidney, or heart problems. Did you know that edema and pitting edema may be able to be fixed without a blood thinner or diuretic? Water retention in the lower legs is caused by a problem with the sodium-potassium pumps in your cells. If these pumps aren’t working correctly, water retention outside the cells, known as interstitial fluid retention, will occur. When you have swollen ankles, it’s usually the result of high blood sugar connected to the hemoglobin protein in your blood. This is called glycation, which inhibits the blood cell’s ability to carry nutrition and oxygen throughout the body. Glycated proteins can also block circulation, leading to swollen legs and swollen ankles. High blood sugar causes sodium retention, which also contributes to water retention. Over time, this can affect the nerves in the bottom of the feet, causing numbness and tingling, known as peripheral neuropathy. Even if you don’t yet have diabetes, edema can be caused by high blood sugar. To help eliminate edema, you must ensure you’re getting plenty of potassium, which can be difficult to achieve through diet alone. The average person needs 4700 mg of potassium daily! Avocados, salads, and berries can help you meet this requirement. You also need plenty of magnesium to help eliminate edema. Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and leafy greens are good sources of magnesium. Aim for 420 mg of magnesium daily. High-quality electrolyte powder without hidden sugars can help increase potassium and magnesium intake. Vitamin B1 deficiency is likely behind issues with the sodium-potassium pump. For sugar to be turned into usable energy in the body, you need vitamin B1. Consuming too many refined carbohydrates can cause a vitamin B1 deficiency. Vitamin B1, potassium, and magnesium can help eliminate edema, but you must also eliminate sugar from your diet. Thank you Dr Berg! 😺👍
I had edema for a couple of months but only in one leg which was very strange and doctors had no idea what was causing it. I was taking all my vitamins, including b1, was healthy and working out, xrays done - nothing wrong with the tissue in the leg! But continual swelling!! The only thing that made it stop and quickly - was cutting out carbohydrates. Mind you i was eating healthy carbs in a healthy balanced diet. Only cutting out carbs worked for me. Im in my second carb free week now. I cant believe how fast my body resolved the problem once i gave it a break from the carbs.
Congrats- I too need to stop the carbs, when I reduce the amounts of pasta I feel better, butter can’t seem to quit. Starting Sept. 1st I’ll stop completely- I’m proud that I quite Pepsi about nine months.
I had the opposite happening... tried to go carnivore for healing, and both of my legs swelled up, and I even got a terrible rash.... had to go back to low carb, and now I am going slowly as oxalate dumping was hurting me.
Ok this is almost creepy lol. I literally was complaining about my feet swelling and how much weight i had gained and thought Dr. B has to have a video on this. No more than 5 min later, voila. This video. Unbelievable ❤
I learned more about diabetes from this video than I have in the last 10 years of (unsuccessful) “treatment” by various doctors. Thank you for taking the time to make this very educational piece.
I have this very same problem with my ankles, and my doctor never, ever mentioned any of this to me. Wow! What a way to keep me coming back to the doctor. Mind-blowing and sad!! Thanks to Dr. B For always providing such amazingly enlightening info.

So much to learn Sly, as a younger person the best you can do is omit the negative "foods" like seed-oils, refined flour products and sugars. Study Dr Berg's videos for better health as you get older. However your brain and long bones will still require carbs and protein to develop, i strongly suggest you avoid the Prolonged Fasting until you are older than at least 25 years old.

I had significant edema in my lower legs before quitting carbs three years ago. My doctor was amazed that my legs were returning to normal after only four months! I had suffered with this condition for ten years! The Doctor told me there was no treatment, just wrap my legs with Ace bandages. Pre diabetes diagnosis was one of the best things to happen to me! After quitting carbs, pre diabetes was gone in three weeks. I still have a small amount of swelling in my ankles. Wear compression sleeves every day. Im going to try this. Thanks, Dr. Berg. Your videos have helped me to improve my health significantly.
Thank you for this video. I take 1teaspoon cremetart/creme of Tartar daily for my potassium intake. I did 8 months lymphedema therapy massages and had 2 appts weekly co pay $40 each time. I have seaping valves in lower ankles and due to sitting at desk working legs in same position bent. Going on two years now no swelling. My feet were soo huge unable to wear shoes but a slide in and compressions. I still wear them daily. I went to vascular Dr who referred me to do the therapy at Baylor. Wish I had seen this video I could have saved Hundreds of dollars. I don't eat a lot of those carbs however the lymph nodes were apparently clogged. She wrapped my legs get drainage out it definitely worked i am grateful. Now this invaluable information I will add into my food intake
I don’t think this video is about the lymph problem… With lymph gathering in the legs, (ankles, feet) it’s called non-pitting edema. I have it too. Only lying down for at least 8-10 hours helps me. I don’t take any medicines, except thyroid hormone - I have Hashimoto disease and probably hypothyroidism by now - this is probably the reason of this problem... I should wear special compression tights (have problems with varicose veins and aneurysms on veins too) but it’s much too hot for it in the place where I live, we have 35-37 degrees Celsius now still and some 85% humidity - there is a problem with putting these tights on AND with pulling them off😢 my hands are too weak for them. This video is about a pitting edema - different problem, different reasons, different ways of treatment. Take care!
@@user-rz7cm2we3x Greetings. Pitting edema is just a measure of the severity of one's lymphatic drainage issue. I am one of those leg wrapping therapists you visited. @@user-rz7cm2we3x Hi i have this and my doctor diagnosed it was lymphedema and prescribed those socks for me so treatment must be the same for all edemas.
I've had a problem with edema , swelling, and pitting on my left leg for 27 years. I got it because of an injury to my left foot. One time I foolishly went out barefoot and I stepped on a sharp pebble; and that's when the swelling started. I've been to various doctors about it and been basically told that nothing can be done. There had been some brief times when it went away but it came back. Elevating can help, but it's hard to do constantly. I am retired from work and I had jobs where I sat for most of the day. I've always exercised with muscle training, bike riding, and some walking. It helped but it never went away. But lately, since I've retired, the swelling is less than it used to be and there are times when I would forget that I have that problem. Maybe I just need to see Jesus walking along a street and then I could touch his clothing, and it would go away. Wouldn't that be nice?

@tomwilliams6744, yes, that would be nice. However, His spirit lives within us.what we ask in His name, believing we shall receive. I believe in the healing power of God, and I don't have to touch His garment. Praise God 🙌🏽

It could be my medication since I am a type 2 diabetic I'm taking ozempic and I'm taking metformin 2000 mg I'm not sure if that's causing my issue but I've had those feelings and my legs for as long as I can remember. Even as a teenager I used to get that. I was diagnosed that too when I was 45 years old

It would be really helpful if you did a review of the electrolyte powders on the market. For example, a lot of them have a much higher sodium to potassium rate and I was always told that you need 4x as much potassium as sodium.
KetoChow sales those in liquid form. Their pricing is amazing too. I get my electrolytes, trace minerals, fasting drops and magnesium from them. You can add them to your water, it will taste salty or you can shot them and chase it with water.
You can buy potassium powder in bulk online and it is so cheap compared to electrolyte powders! I get my salt by food, take a magnesium supplement and add a spoon of potassium powder to my water. I work in the Texas heat in the summer and need a crazy amount of electrolytes. I get bad leg cramps if I don't. Them companies are charging way too much for electrolytes, just salt, magnesium and potassium.
Thank you Dr. Berg! Informative and well explained as always. Ive been ketovore for 3 years and 99.99% strict carnivore for almost 3 months. I’ve never had this much improvement in the swelling of my legs on any diet I’ve ever tried. I’ve suffered with swelling in my lower legs, feet, ankles since I was a teen. I’ve thought I’d heard every reasoning, from lipodema, too much salt, too many fried foods, muscles in the legs, just don’t work, because I’m tall 👀 but never heard a true explanation. Thank you again🫶
You are a blessing! I just literally bought B1 vitamins today because my ankles are swollen and I've been craving sugar like no tomorrow! I'm menopausal and it's driving me nuts! Thank you! 👍❤
Stroke victims get neurological symptoms because muscles are paralyzed. I have had a massive stroke and my right leg is still paralyzed. I have edema on the right leg but not on the left. As I have gotten better control of the leg, the edema has gone down some. I still have swelling and edema but exercise has helped tremendously with it. My right arm had edema but it has gone away after I regained control of my shoulder muscles. I still don’t have control from my elbow down but the edema is long gone.
Really? If Dr Berg said it I didn't hear him but how much of both? My fibromialgia and RA pain is debilitating me and I'm only 54. We have a 9yr old daughter that doesn't understand why mommy doesn't get to go places with her and her daddy.
Lately, I've been feeling the struggle with having pain in the ankels but what i did was go to produce junction where i live and start buying berries mainly seeded , and all of the sudden i am feeling much better movement in the legs are more stronger not feeling the constrictions along with tingling for me it's about learning how to take care of your body best health and still learning.
I had problems with my feet when I ate strictly ketogenic for 10 years. And benfotiamine did not help at all. But, when I started to add fruit to my diet and removed vegetables, it got much better. I guess that my gut did not absorb the nutrients from vegetables, as potassium, but could easily absorb it from fruit.
Your advice is always AWESOME!!! Also, when I started to put my legs up high on short breaks instead of sitting in my chair at work a lot, the swelling went down. Plus, I eat raw garlic for circulation. Yes, sugar is limited for me. USA
Since I’ve removed refined sugar, carbs and introduced more meat, fasting between dinner and lunch, big lunch small dinner usually just avo on rye bread people have been saying I’ve lost weight but I haven’t, it’s literally just fluid 🙌
If swelling is also accompanied by reddish/brown discoloring in the lower calves, it could also be "venous reflux disease," wherein like red wine spilling on a white carpet, leaking blood from damaged blood vessel can discolor the skin and also cause circulatory problem (with deficient venous muscle blood return) and blood and fluid not flowing out properly from the legs. A sonogram on the legs can determine this condition (get referred to a vascular leg surgeon). Doctors now have a very efficient, noninvasive, quite painless in-office catheter procedure (no recovery time needed) that can seal broken vessels, redirecting flow to other healthy vessels. Insurance likely covers the procedure, too. It helped me. I also found information online that red vine leaf mineral supplement can aid this vascular problem.
I’ve had a swollen ankle/foot for 4 yrs. After testing and ultrasounds doctors don’t have a reason for the issue. I’m 72 non diabetic slim kinda active woman with new hips and several back surgery’s but still running around doing house and yard work. There’s NO reason for the bad foot swelling. I STARTED USING THE VITAMINS IN THIS VIDEO 1 weeks ago ago. MY SWELLING IS 90% GONE!!!! Thank you Dr. for this video.

Dr Berg notes
Dr Berg talks about edema causes and remedies.

I don’t think this video is about the lymph problem…
With lymph gathering in the legs, (ankles, feet) it’s called non-pitting edema.

I noticed I have swollen legs these last 5 days.
And I suspected sugar... lately I was doing a lot of home improvements in hot Subic and had alot of sweetened fruit flavored drink (about 3 liters a day for 3 weeks.)
Once I noticed the swelling, I refrained taking carbs and sugar. I did Keto diet once; it was very effective! Will probably do that again.

Dr Berg, thank you for everything. I have been watching you for almost a year now. Your apple cider vinegar, kefir, cabbage juice and ultimate antibiotic videos saved my life last year. I was having chronic loose stools for 4 months with upper gut pain because of a small intestinal protozoan infection and also sometimes descending colon pain, hopeless looking for remedies everywhere because synthetic antibiotics didn't cure it and then i came across your videos. ACV, kefir and your ultimate antibiotic cleared my infection within 1week, cabbage juice stopped the pain, everything is back to normal now after so much suffering. Your videos made me more aware of the importance of the gut microbiome. Again thank you for everything Dr Berg, forever grateful for the information you provide🙏
I'm so glad you've found relief and healing. Thank you for sharing, and I'm happy I could help. Stay healthy!
This was fantastic! I understood every word and now have an understanding behind my inflammation. TYSVM!!!!
You're absolutely welcome!
Started having strawberry, blueberries, and banana smoothie every day for the last three weeks.. alot of my symptoms are fading away
Careful about too much fruit as it is high in fructose which leads to fatty liver, as well as spiking blood glucose. Remember, the most important thing is to lower carbs to lower blood glucose. Eat lots of non-starchy vegetable carbs but moderate the starchy fruit carbs.

Alfalfa tablets were miraculous for my swollen ankles near the end of my first pregnancy. Also they work after having restaurant food, which is often high in sodium.
Some people hate that I've been blessed to often be able to pinpoint exactly what "it" truly is when dealing with drug-related edema. I get called every name under the sun for not having a medical license, but still fighting for those I care for. 😂 Oh well, won't stop me. Stay strong, people, and have a wonderful day!
Some people can't be helped cuz they don't want it, they didn't ask for it. I have edema at only 43 years old and I watched my mother die from it at 44. Her legs, no her calves blew up from about 20 inches to 50 inches in just 6 months. It was scary, traumatizing even. So like you I am very Intune with my own body and what works for me and I tried offering what I have learned (unwanted advice) to other woman, since my mother didn't know what to do and now I do. But Older woman who are like 75 year olds, look at me, at my age and think.. "you don't know what your talking about." and quickly dismiss anything I say about it LOL so ofc they don't wanna listen.. they also never asked

They will say to you where did you get your medical license. I just say the school of common sense.
@@nardip4999 I mean, yuh ofc, DUHH... but there is always more to it then just that. They discovered her liver was covered in cirrhosis scars 5 months before her death. but when her legs (calf) blew up from 15 inch's to 60 inches in diameter.. (in under a year) she gave up on life and who can blame her? so ya.. i think that killed her.. She had small amounts of water retention for about 20 years before this happened. There were so many warnings signs that we ignored for years and years as her doctor didn't know what advice to offer, other then to watch her diet, use compress socks.. and we ignored it. I mean, every woman retains water now and again right?
I am so happy that you made this video. No one ever talks about the swelling of ankles. I wished you would do such a video since you say things so well. I have swelling ankles since my pregnancy which has been 18 years ago. Do I have swelling 18 years now with no success in decreasing my swelling. I tried for the first time dieting since I became overweight after pregnancy but can’t lose. The reason honestly: I love food. So eating bananas, berries, Chia seeds, no sugar, no gluten and plant fiber good?
Bottom line stop eating sugar!!!
Supplements needed:
Potassium 700MG
Magnesium 420 MG
Vitamin B-1
Thank you doctor for this video. Much appreciated
That is my problem this summer. In the past my feet have swollen a little during the summer heat but not as bad as this summer. Due to the leg fracture/immobility I have not been able to do even the most basic things like prepping my vitamin/pill trays. All the vitamins you mentioned, I have taken on a regular basis the last 10+ years. That's why I was so surprised at how bad the swelling was this year. Felt like I was walking on painful water balloons. I was worried the immobility from the fracture and the extreme temperatures were causing the swelling. Now I am even more motivated to get my trays done. Thank you for the information.
The best doctor I never had.... thank you

I'll add B1 with my magnesium supplement.

Peptides, prp, stem cells, BPC-157, TB-500, will and change your diet to 20 carbs or less per day. About 4 tablespoons of plain oats is 20 carbs.

Thank you so much Dr. Berg. I increased my daily intake of potassium a few months ago when I heard another teaching you did about it. It’s really good . I tell everyone about it. Thank you so much.
Can I ask what changes you've noticed?
My feet and ankles have been swollen for a past couple of months. Did my blood work up and I am not diabetic. This is so timely, I am definitely going to what Dr Berg recommends.
B1 is the main one. Take with magnesium, and potasium. Dont eat carbs or refined sugar is what he says.
Thank you so much Dr. Berg! I have that pitting endema on my left ankle. I am already taking potasium. Now to include Mg, increase Potassium and Vitamin B-1! Awesome! ❤🎉😊
You're absolutely welcome!
Sometimes, a chemical being frequently consumed can cause it. I had swollen ankles and it turned out to be from decaffeinated coffee from a particular convenience store. I stopped drinking it and the swelling vanished. It had some kind of chemical in it, possibly a machine cleaner
Great spotting that, thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work!
same as my mom who has lymphedema because of her cancer (she was a survivor tho)

4:16 Coconut water has at least 2000mg potassium per litter. 2 litters per day is usual drinking water consumption. When exercise or in summer and you need 4 litters. But you’d need 8 avocado or a kilo of spinach., not viable.

I like my beer, and switching to lo-carb beer and cutting down on my drinking, along with a low carb diet has helped a lot, (pretty much eliminated most of the swelling) but one ankle/foot that I injured about 4 months ago, still gets swollen every day. It's fine when I get out of bed, but after about an hour the effects of gravity kick in and my foot gets swollen again.

What you do for the people on the internet Dr, is much appreciated and I think it's awesome how you make important things (to know) for everyone available for free online. This break down was really good delivery, always good work.
Thanks, Dr. Berg. I’ve been watching your videos for a couple of months now and have done a complete 180 in terms of my health, from intermittent fasting, low carb/no added sugar, to getting enough vitamins per day through vegetables (leafy greens/cruciferous) and supplements. I even feel better now that I’ve been more vitamin B. Thanks again; you’re doing a great thing for people all over the word.
It’s crazy how I figured out to stop eating carbs in December 2023 when I realized my ankles wouldn’t stop swelling up. After a couple of weeks carb free, my ankles were fine. I slowly introduced carbs and I noticed 2 days later, my ankles were swollen again. I didn’t know anything about the vitamins and minerals until now. I’ll be sore to make sure I’m getting enough along with my carb free diet.
Omg!! I was literally looking up info about this 3 days ago! Thank you for this video Dr. Eric!

I have lymphedema and lipodema and noticed the swelling in my ankles and calves , which was pitting edema , went away when I started B1 injections : 200mg a week . I still have swelling problems because of the diseases but not the watery thin skin pitting edema. Pain has been reduced and now under control because of B1 and B12 (NOT cyanocobalamin) injections weekly. Injections only worked because SIBO/SIFO destroyed the ileum's ability to absorb and utilize Vitamins B1 and B12.

Yes! I bought some Liquid IV electrolyte powder and it's SO salty, tastes gross to me.
Appreciate the video suggestion! Thanks for watching.
