"Why Do People Laugh at Spirit 'Science'?" is a series in which I debunk and make fun of the claims of defacto new age cult leader Jordan Duchnycz/Pearce/David/River/whatever he calls himself this week, and his "Spirit Science," which is about as far from science as it gets. Featuring psychic powers, male and female energy which apparently relates to thermodynamics, spinning physical wheels inside our bodies and Jews from space, this is some serious stupid that sadly, millions of people seem to take seriously.

Tarot cards are much like a "choose-your-own" adventure in card form, but when doing a tarot reading for someone else, you add in a huge component of cold-reading. If you read through the card descriptions you'll notice they are intentionally vague, especially in how they interact with each other in the format of the reading. When I was in high school I passed one of my night school classes by giving the teacher tarot card readings. More hilariously though, some of my classmates refused to touch or even look at the cards, telling me they were demonic magic.

Like most packs of cards, they were originally developed for gambling. The 'fortune telling' came much later, and is about as accurate as using any other gambling devices for predicting the future (unless the prediction is: 'you are going to lose a lot of money')

    • @SunsetDrake
      @SunsetDrake 4 года назад

Its kind of a thing between 'believing solid reality' and 'being spiritual'. If one believes hard reality and facts, this will always be woo, because they can never interact 'properly' with the cards for a 'proper' reading. If you don't approach the experience 'open minded', if you will, and experience it as it was meant, you'll never see it work. If one takes a reading believing it to be BS, then BS is what they will get. If they approach it openly and formulate the meanings themselves, then maybe it'd be seen differently. The mind is a powerful thing.

I was a Tarot Reader for a while in the 90s. Half at most of what Spience is saying is right, and he’s interpreting all of that to his version.
Personally, I used them as a mundane therapy tool, like Rorschach tests. They helped me get my clients talking about what they were worried over.
I was rare in this approach, but what he’s describing is, too. Most Readers treat it as a form of spiritual entertainment, like singing gospel or doing tai chi or something.
Of course the people making money on it will hype its importance more, especially if they’re trying to sell something like their own deck...

It's a basic paradox. If you know something unpleasant will happen, you can try to avoid it but you have no idea what choices lead you to it, by trying to avoid it you might ultimately cause it to happen, if you do nothing to avoid it, you might actually avoid it. There is no way to know what path is the better one.

I read Tarot professionally when I was younger. Skipping the details, it could be useful as an exercise in providing perspective. The problem was, and why I quit after a few years, is that the people who most want their Tarot read are the people for whom it is the worst idea to read them. Using the Tarot occasionally can trick one into insights that eluded them for various reasons, but repeated use makes it harder to have new insights.
Guess what kind of person is actually the customer base for paid Tarot readings? The people who get no benefit. I got sick of it pretty quickly.
My approach to Tarot was scientific in that I deliberately used an arbitrarily designed system and was still able to deliver the exact same benefits.
The "woo" is a key element in useful Tarot reading, because one of the main reasons you can gain insights is you detach from the particulars of your question or problem before approaching them from a different angle. Think of it as a placebo, but for counseling.
And we know, scientifically, that placebos can have a beneficial effect.

@@oflameo8927 In my experience, maybe twice in one year initially, then less than once a year afterwards. Even quarterly is pushing it.
Scammers prey on those wanting weekly or monthly readings, first because they are a gullible mark, and second, they will get no incidental benefit. I quit because I was getting the wrong repeat clients, and money is never worth predating for.

Alan Watts (peace be upon him) talks about this kind of thing in "The Way of Zen". It's a good book that I recommend to you, Marten. But he said that all of these modern interpretations of fortune telling and so forth can pretty much be traced back to tortoise shell reading in ancient China, though, of course, he knows that it goes back further even than them. But the general principle was that fortune tellers would heat tortoise shells in a fire, and then "read" one's fortune from the cracks that appeared on the shell, taking their interpretations out of the "Book of Ways", which is one of the most ancient surviving Chinese texts .But, in reality, he said that any reading could be gotten from any formation of cracks, even if one was encouraged to see it "this way" rather than 'that way". Cracks in a shell are just as arbitrary, he says, as any othr decision-making process we might come up with, because the general practice of making a decision is compiling an appropriate amount of data, and then acting. Well, what exactly IS the "appropriate amount"? Could we not keep looking for information until long after the time to decide has come and gone? And so, he says it's a combination of data and time, and where we get that data from is arbitrary a lot of the time, because mom could tell you to do one thing and dad could tell you to do another, but, inevitably, it's still YOUR decision. Now, he doesn't mean decisions like where to make a cut in someone's artery during surgery: he means shit like what to wear to the concert.

Tarot Readings can indeed work, but not in that way. If you read the tarot cards to someone else, you also question the person "how might the card relate to your life?". You thus get infromation about the other person, and thus, you can talk to him about that information he provided. Basically, the tarot is a fancy way of getting people to talk about their life situation.

I think it would actually be really interesting to maybe hear you explain some physics topics or maybe a field or area in physics that you studied extensively during your PhD days in university. Exactly. It's just confirmation bias. How young were you when you learned to think critically, eh? I think it was probably later for me than for you because I went to a Catholic elementary school and high school, but it did happen eventually, thankfully.

I went to a Jesuit Catholic high school (Fairfield College Preparatory School aka Fairfield Prep) where they actually taught us critical thinking. philosophy and accurate science. I actually first became an atheist because of all I learned there.
My sophomore philosophy teacher was so intellectually honest that the problem of evil convinced him that God must not be almighty, rather all good but incapable of stopping evil in this life.
Gotta give the Jesuits credit for being more open minded in their educating than most other Catholics, imo.

Lucky you. I don't think my schools had any particular branch of Catholicism in mind, but I didn't learn philosophy until university, but THEN I turned into the critical thinker I am now (thank you, Dr. Jonathan). Help me out here, though: the Jesuits weren't the ones who murdered and/or tortured all the Indigenous in Canada and America, were they?

@@ActiveAdvocate1 as far as I am aware, the Jesuits were the radical, commie type catholics who fought income inequality and Tried to help the poor in South America. I also read that spied on the Nazis for the allies. I do know they founded colonies in the 1700s to basically make the "heathens" Christian, but I dont know if they actually committed atrocities. I do know that the Jesuits themselves have been the victims if atrocities, like the Jesuit Massacre. But who knows? They are a secretive Catholic order, who knows what they might have done?

Jordan made his own Tarot deck to be used by New Age Jugheads, and added 4 cards that then needed to be integrated with what the Deck was made into. I collect the decks for their art, nothing else. Though I would love some rules for games to be played with them.
I will admit when Martymer was talking about people who rely on the cards to tell them what to do, it reminded me of an anime character. He does nothing unless his cards say to do it. He does have the power to make most of his predictions come true however.

Y'know, I've done tarot for fun with my friends. There's nothing special about the cards or their patterns, I'm just doing a modified cold to warm reading on them and using some guesswork and intuition (natural, no magic) to make some stuff up based on what I know and the target's reaction. No magic, hidden science or such, just my guesses, Knowledge and showmanship. It's just a game at best and a con at worst.

I think it comes down to the fact that quantum mechanics are so difficult, even for educated individuals, to even try to comprehend, that when they inevitably fail to do so, they sometimes attribute it to coded hidden knowledge, something mystical, even divine.
It can't be because they can't understand quantum mechanics (not that anyone really understands it anyway🤯) .

I actually spent money on the deck because I'm into tarot and I thought the deck looked interesting. Looking at it strictly in the context as an art piece, it's pretty alright, and I admit I chuckled at some of the pop-culture references he put in (7 of Swords is FF7, The Hierophant has an Air Nomad tattoo, 4 of Wands has a flag with Kamina's glasses). Compared with other decks, he tries to strike a balance between the RWS and Thoth decks, to mixed effect. He also switched the positions of the Empress and Emperor, which doesn't really change anything unless you're a nerd like me who notices the Hebrew letter attributions. He apparently also did another weird thing with the numbers in the second printing, but that's beside the point.
If you're worried that I think tarot cards are magic quantum ankhholes, I don't. They're just pretty pictures that you can use as a focus for creative thinking.

cyana h The Hierophant is one of the cards. The older title is The Pope, but Hierophant sounded more mystical to some nerds in the 19th century, so they started calling it that for their decks. RWS stands for Rider-Waite-Smith, probably the most popular tarot deck used for divination. Kamina is a character from Gurren Lagann.

By the way, Joseph Campbell had NOTHING to do with either tarot or QM. He laid out the basics of what, in literature, is called "The Hero's Journey", a trope that can be seen in literature going all the way back to the Epic of Gilgamesh. Campbell is certainly a bit too formulaic, but he does draw links where they appear throughout literary works.
