    Someone asked me why do so many cultures have pyramids if they weren't "connected" somehow
    My reply: "because humans figured out that was the best way to stack rocks up really high without them falling over"

    • @hedgehog3180
      @hedgehog3180 6 лет назад +51

      That's the thing. A pyramid is literally a stack of rocks. It is not very impressive from an engineering stand point. The impressive part is usually the size since that indicates that the society that built them was large and very advanced since it was able to get just this many rocks stacked on top of each other. But from an engineering stand point something like the Pantheon in Rome is way more impressive since it actually shows an deep understanding of material sciences and civil engineering.

    • @Bankstercide
      @Bankstercide 6 лет назад +39

      Actually, i'd say that ancient infrastructure projects like Roman roads and the flood control systems in China which are both in use today are more impressive feats of engineering. But they're not as sexy and humans have a tendency of judging by appearances.

    • @BnVibe
      @BnVibe 6 лет назад +3

      the pyramids are interesting because despite what people may tell you we don't know how or why they were made. same with sphinx and stonehenge. these aren't just big stones dragged to random spots, although you can believe what you want because we have no "evidence" and apparently you can dismiss anything that cant be shoved in your face

    • @davidh.4944
      @davidh.4944 6 лет назад +53

      Robby Miller: No, we can't be sure _exactly_ how or why these structures were built because those details have been lost to history. But we _do_ have really strong hypotheses based on multiple lines of evidence.
      We can tell where the stones came from, often down to the exact quarries, from geological and chemical examination. We have found in these quarries the tools and markings used to cut an shape the stones. We have the physical remains of workers showing injuries and other physical effects of the labors they were involved in. We can compare the efforts of different cultures in various times and places and see how and why they did similar things (we have direct knowledge of Roman stone-working techniques, for example). We can and have tested various hypothesized techniques and found that it is possible to shape, move and lift heavy stones using "primitive" technology. We know conclusively that it was indeed _possible_ for these cultures to create the things they did all on their own, without any kind of outside help or advanced tools and techniques.
      And most important, we have NO EVIDENCE AT ALL that anything other than human ingenuity, willpower, and massive amounts of cheap labor were used. No sign of things like carbon steel tools, advanced machinery, or architectural designs that depend on tools or techniques unavailable to the cultures studied. Nothing but arguments from incredulity and ignorance. What we do know is that the men of 5-6 millennia ago were not ignorant savages, but clever, capable people who managed to accomplish incredible things with the resources they had available to them.

    • @BnVibe
      @BnVibe 6 лет назад +4

      well put. I read that the labor was not done cheap and the workers were paid well. however I'm mostly curious about why. I don't believe they were just bored and wanted to find the best way to stack rocks. and every explanation I find is just someones best guess. you can call it conclusive all you want but like you said it has been lost in history and we can only do our best to put the broken pieces together. I think times like these require a little more imagination than usual. its hard for one person to comprehend thousands of years of history

    • @SSJKamui
      @SSJKamui 4 года назад +7

      Actually, Jordan uses many parts of Theosophy. And Theosophy was the basis for plenty of movies. For example John Carter, Tarzan and Conan the Barbarian. If you wanna count Esoteric Hitlerism (a strange cult in south america believing hitler was the messiah) as a part of theosophy (which is easy because hitlerism takes almost everything from theosophy), then Iron Sky, Captain America, Full Metal Alchemists and so on, are also theosophical movies. (Basically the whole concept of Nazis as occult master magicians is theosophical.)
      The Anime Nadia The Secret of Blue water is heavily based on theosophy, and Neon Genesis Evangelion took a few major plot points from theosophy.
      In case of video games, Final Fantasy 7 is heavily based on theosophy.

    This is one of those areas where having an art history student's knowledge of Egyptian history gives me the upper hand. One of the first things they teach you about ancient Egyptian art is that it is not representative. The Egyptians did not make images from life like a modern landscape painter, their art was symbolic and had a rigid artistic canon. The pharaoh is depicted as ageless because his spirit is immortal, he's depicted as huge because he's the most important person in the kingdom, Osiris' face is green because he's associated with the fertility of the earth.

      When young and curious, you explore many different theories that explain life, the universe, and everything, and you have the want to be open-minded. Free to explore, without guidance, little knowledge having been gained, and no bullshit meter in place, many of these stories look plausible - they are structured to be that way; they hype up their side of the story, and hide, misrepresent or leave out relevant facts.
      It does go towards to providing a foundation from which to explore and build knowledge, which for some of us, is precious.
      +Heiner Privat

      ***** My main problem, was that I didn't know how to do research on the internet. As you can probably imagine, that lead me to some crazy places, and since I didn't look for empirical sources, I read whatever article I found, and believed what sounded right. I didn't stop and think "what if this is wrong?" and continued to search for the real truth, I just stopped at the first thing I found that agreed with my pre-conceived beliefs, and stuck with whatever I found.
      "physicists" like Naseem Haramein, also led me to believe that what I held to be true had some rationality to it within modern science.
      Thankfully, I developed reason and critical thinking skills. I watched the Amazing Atheist a lot at first, because I liked what he had to say against Christianity, but I never applied the same arguments to my beliefs. It was quite a weird cognitive dissonance at the time. Then I bought The God Delusion, and after reading that, I realized that I believed the same caliber, perhaps even a higher caliber, of bullshit than the Christians and other mainstream religions did. It took me a while to shake it all, but it's all gone now.

    You know what I find to be even more sad? The fact that I kinda like the animation style and his voice in how he explains stuff (his voice just sounds relaxed enough to not overwhelm but energetic enough to make it easy to listen to and absorb information). The stuff he "explains" are shit but if he actually tried doing videos that were (actually) scientifically accurate to explain scientific concepts or certain things that are based in reality they could potentially be pretty entertaining and informative. I would totally watch that but unfortunately he does not use these assets of his for good but rather has let it go to waste and used them to misinform and mislead people :( The biggest problem I think is that he has this stubborn assumption that he is right by default and is good just trying to inform all the poor people around him so he is unlikely to change his ways (at least anytime soon). If what he said in his response video was what he actually felt like I think he may be slightly open to thinking and questioning but it still isn't fully open yet and is gonna take a lot more chipping away to get through that armor of presupposition/self-righteousness confused for humbleness. I like his little characters and calm voice but dammit the stuff he tries to push is just idiotic and nonsensical DX

I'd describe it as high-pitched and unnaturally rough around the edges, as if there's some autotuning going on. However, this seems a lot more apparent in Extra Credits than Spirit Science. Jordan might actually be naturally high pitched.

  • @Mistran5lation

    This whole "history" seems to be pieced together from different places:
    The Martian war is from Edgar Rice Burroughs' "A Princess of Mars".
    The Martian cataclysm and travel to Earth seems to be from some sci-fi movie called "Mission to Mars" or something I saw a few years ago. The characters discovered that the Martians seeded Earthly life.
    The 13,000-year-ago polar shift is from Mayan Bak'tun cycles.
    As Martymer said, the body spirits are from scientology.
    The secret technology is from Stargate SG-1, and the technology being burried by ancient humans is from Fringe.
    I mean, I doubt he actually took these from those places (except the Mayan one, since that's some nice pseudo-history), but it only proves the absurdity.

    Not even two minutes into the video and I have a headache from repeated facepalms. This is one reason I encourage people to get out and travel if they can do so. Even a tourist trip to Giza would let you know that people KNOW how the pyraminds were built. It was complicated it was laboreous but it is not unknown. We can build far better pyramids today there just isn't a need for them. Last it takes way less than 50 men to move 2.5 tons, Metric or US.

    • @redchris05
      @redchris05 10 лет назад +6

      I hear that old "impossible to move" canard about far too many sites and buildings, so here's a handy refutation which covers all of these claims:
      The "Thunder Stone" is in St Petersburg. It weighed about 1600 tonnes when it was first moved - it was sculpted en route - and is, by far, the largest stone ever moved by men. This was done in the late seventeenth century. This is before the invention of what those cunts claim are the necessary technological advances to move them, but recent enough that the transport is pretty well-documented. Put simply, capstans.
      If this stone was moved by nothing more than ingenuity and muscle power, then no other stone or structure is a mystery, because every fucking one of them is smaller than this one.
      Steal this example and paste it wherever the cretins don't want you to paste it.

    Between history and physics(cosmology in particular) this guy , Jordan, has managed to defecate all over my two passions. Akhenaten was *not* the first Pharaoh, he wasn't even old kingdom, he was 18th dynasty, for crying out loud. He tried to place the Aten, or sun disc, as supreme deity, and the only god to be worshiped, even ordering iconography of other gods to be removed. Though he did claim celestial visitation, and divine heritage(what god-king Pharaoh *didn't*, eh?), there is reason to suspect his actions were in an attempt to consolidate power in Egypt in the hands of Pharaoh, and remove power from the priest caste, especially the powerful priests of Amun Ra, the sun god(yes, there was a sun god and a sun disc god, lol).
    Interestingly, Akhenaten was the father of arguably the most famous of all Pharaohs, Tutankhaten, who later changed his name to Tutankhamun, after his father died(likely murdered by the priests he sought to oppose) as worship of Amun Ra was restored, and Egyptian society restored to the status quo. Akhenaten also moved the capitol away from Thebes and built a new one, Amarna( called Akhetaten), and raised his wife, Nefertiti, to full on divinity. All in all one of the most fascinating figures in history, imo.
    *edited to add the original name of el-Amarna, Akhetaten, which I had forgotten to include =)

I brought this up to some other new ager, whose channel slogan was something like "never dismiss idea out of hand", something along the lines of be open to new evidence and ideas, yet utterly dismissed the counterweight hypothesis, out of hand, seemingly because it wasn't supernatural/mysterious enough. Also, that depends on where you start on the Greek timeline. There were, before the Mycenaeans, a society called the Minoans who lived on Crete, and though the Mycenaeans are kind of "the ancient Greece of ancient Greece" (i.e. they're the guys Homer wrote about at the tail end of Greece's Dark Age), the Minoans were way older than the Mycenaeans. We don't know much about them, though, because we can't decipher their writing yet, but we do know they had a thing about fighting bulls. There are painted walls all over their ruins with images of dudes doing front-flips over the backs of bulls: it's really interesting stuff. But then that's also where you get the myth about Minos and his wife sleeping with a bull, creating the Minotaur (literally "Minos' Bull", which, in the myth, he saw as a HUGE insult, which is why he traps the thing in his labyrinth). We also don't know what happened to the Minoans, but it's speculated that some huge natural disaster wiped out their civilization.

      Nate Rojas We certainly do not need to believe utter rubbish. We should believe what we understand is not at odds with reality.

      Nate Rojas we all need to believe in something? what the heck are you talking about?

    • @naterojas9272
      @naterojas9272 10 лет назад

      Yes we do. I mean this in a way like we all need to have something to fall back on like a default. For many it is god for many others it is reason or democracy (many other things it could be). Does that makes sense?

    • @yoshyoka
      @yoshyoka 10 лет назад +4

      Nate Rojas No, it does not.
      What you are suggesting is that truth and reality have no value. Moreover you imply that there is no moral issue for anyone to delude others for personal gain as long as these think it “feels right”. You are also not considering that a spirituality that is based on nothing tangible and on easily falsifiable assertions is inherently fragile and is likely to collapse on itself once you open your mind to reality.
      If then you’d like to defend this state of mind on a teleological basis you are even worse off: rejecting reality cannot and will not foster progress but regression, both morally and technologically.
      So if you think that deluding yourself with fairytales to feel better “makes sense” you are spitting on all the people that devoted their life to improve our understanding while glorifying the work of charlatans and quackery.

    1. Go on google earth.
    2. Go to the top where you see the little planet symbol which looks like saturn.
    3. Select 'Mars' from the drop-down menu.
    4. Enter these co-ordinates-
    40°23'49.08"N
    09°32'12.45"W
    5. Gaze in awe and wonder at the mighty 'pyramids'.
    6. Laugh at spirit science for his use of outdated, low-res photographs and his general penchant for being an idiot.

      The bit in the video where SS says that the mounds and whatnot are pyramids is at ~6:15.
      Also, SS has labelled the mounds at co-ordinates-
      40°34'19.31"N
      09°53'20.94"W
      as a city.

      Oh and if you really wanna see how dumb it is, zoom in to about an eye elevation of 1.75km and use the little circle in the top right (it says _"click to look around"_ when you mouse over it) to view the mesas from an angle to get a better idea of their shape.

    Holy Crap. This Jordan guy is awesome. His stuff is like a Spiritualist/occult/ New Age bullshit greatest hits medley from the last 150 years, with a smattering of Mormonism and Dianetics thrown in.

      Well are there any interesting “New Age” or otherwise kind of theories that you can get on? It’s hard to say when there are som things we don’t know and there’s bullshitters on the sidelines trying to get attention with class or badly researched imformation.
