      While I can't speak for others, I think the reason ToD didn't do as well, was because of the annoying female lead character. She was whiny, loud, whiny, annoying, and whiny. As for KotCS, I haven't seen it for myself, so I can't say, beyond the fact of the massive suspension of disbelief of the nuked fridge, and the addition of Shia LeBouf. Was not impressed by his performance in Transformers, so I see no reason to like him anywhere else. Also, it may have a lot to do with the fact that more people are familiar with Christian mythology than the Crystal Skull fakes.
      Also, the other two movies had somethings fairly important going for them. The first movie of a franchise is almost without exception, the best in any series, hands down. There are very few franchises that actually improve over time. Secondly, Last Crusade had Sean Connery. That alone makes any movie about ten times more enjoyable. Thirdly, KotCS had fallen into the CGI trap. All the previous movies before employed practical effects for the most part, only relying on animation for ghostly things, like the spirits in the Ark. And when it comes down to it, who wouldn't rather see a practical effect of a Nazi's face melting off versus a CGI one?

    •  10 лет назад +4

      *****
      You clearly ignored half of what Emigdiosback said. Not one archeologist in history found anything in the americas that talked about crystal skulls, therefore the entire mythology of the crystal skulls isn't even real in the sense of what makes a cultural myth authentic in the context that the culture existed.

    Took the liberty to calculate facepalms in this series because math. In my calculations I went ahead and excluded episode 9 because not only no facepalms but very very little face for martymer to palm. So over 10 episodes, we have a total of 57 facepalms, averaging 5.7 facepalms per episode. when considering total play time of all the episodes, we get 1 facepalm appx every 2 minutes 18 seconds. When considering the time of individual episodes instead (which might be better for predicting the amount of facepalms in future episodes), we get an average of 1 facepalm appx every 2 minutes 38 seconds. (again, I excluded episode 9). Also does anybody know if there will be future installments?

    I am actually a good example of someone who experienced firsthand what happens if you "treat" something more or less serious with quackery.
    When I was little, I suffered from a severe case of atopic dermatitis. My mother took me to someone who tried to treat me with homeopathy. Surprise! It did not do anything. When we went back to him, he stated that it is normal if it seems to get worse at first and we should just be patient. After a while, my father (who had objected to this treatment in the first place) convinced my mother to take me to a professional dermatologist. The first thing he said to my mother after hearing our story and properly diagnosing what I had was: "Do you actually know what you made your child suffer through all this time?"

    The only thing that was amusing about the 'crystal movie' is what my girlfriend and I came up with based on Jordan's beliefs.
    1. Everything is a vibration.
    2. Crystals vibrate at frequencies.
    3. Different frequencies do different things.

    I am a practical nurse of mental health and substance abuse. I think you are doing really important work at explaining how science work and what science is. That really can and will make a purpose in this world. You are really thorough and easily understood and polite within reason to the concept of the channel. And unlike most critics you do not mock people for their religion or just because they belief but you underline the problem within their believe/believes beside science. Even it is something that believer do or don’t want to know or hear.Believing in something divine can be restoring and give meaning to life. And that kind of feelings are important for everyone, not just for “believers”. I also think that yarning for those feelings are the ground for the most of the “stupid”. Science on the other hand is more like ingredients on a recipe not the whole setting. It is just the thing there is to measure or not. Oh yeah, and then there is the logic thingy. Keep up the good work!

    Finally got back to watching the rest of this video, and I'd go one step further. Not only are these beliefs not harmless, I don't believe any beliefs are harmless. A belief, in this context, is the acceptance or rejection of some opinion without impartial evidence by necessity. After all, if there is impartial evidence for or against a claim, then accepting or rejecting the claim isn't based on belief, but on the claim meeting or not meeting a reasonable standard. For example, a belief that gravity exists isn't a belief, because it can be demonstrated impartially: two random people with nothing to lose or gain from the outcome can drop things, and demonstrate that gravity is, in fact, real. A belief that gravity does not exist can get you a 10-story shortcut to your local morgue.
    Having said that, just believing what someone said doesn't mean it's a belief. If someone were to tell me they ate a ham sandwich, I wouldn't refuse to believe it unless they could show me a video of them eating, or had their stomach contents (or worse, feces) analyzed to prove there was ham, bread, and condiments in it. But believing that statement doesn't require me to change my outlook on life, the universe, and everything. So it's not really a belief. Believing something without impartial evidence that alters the way you view and interact with the world...there's no way that can be harmless because you're not seeing the world for what it is. You're marveling at the pretty little kitty without realizing it's a tiger, and it's hunting you.

    I like that you bought up the placebo effect, which basically says that there is no active ingredient but the persons belief, and that brings the effect. Doctors say that the placebo effect works on at least 30% of people. I think the key here is that their "Belief" brings about results - Isn't that what Spirit and God is all about? So if a person believes that a certain crystal brings about a certain spiritual aspect is it totally false to say it won't?

    • @MichaelSchiciano
      @MichaelSchiciano 10 лет назад

      "So if a person believes that a certain crystal brings about a certain spiritual aspect is it totally false to say it won't?"
      It's not false, because the point is that it isn't the crystal that brings a certain spiritual aspect, it is the person/user. As long as they believe in whatever the particular 'remedy' is. So even if it does work, it's not the specific object that is doing the work, because the same response could be gained from a placebo in the form of a pill, a crystal, a wristband, or otherwise.
      I'd like a source for your "Doctors say that the placebo effect works on at least 30% of people." statement, if only because I think that also kind of misses out on the point that placebo doesn't work for all conditions.

      Well, the whole point of placebo effect is that _it's not an effect_, it is a "I feel better" without actually addressing the problem. I'd rather see those people seek proper aid and actually get better, then just go around "thinking happy thoughts". Sadly, the world doesn't work with those alone. Not cancer you dolt. He could have gotten real treatment but he went with new age woo and it did nothing. By the time he turned back to medicine it was to late. He could have been treated when medicine discovered the cancer but he took the alternative woo route and paid with his life.

    • @HopyHop1
      @HopyHop1 10 лет назад

      He would have died anyway. The ten year survival rate after diagnosis for cancer of the pancreas is about 1%. For five years it's 3%. And for one year it's 22%. Maybe Jobs sought alternative therapies because he was aware of mainstream medicine's failure to treat cancer of the pancreas. Jobs actually fared better than the average patient receiving full treatment for pancreatic cancer.
      He actually took an intelligent approach to treat cancer. Dean Ornish demonstrated in a CRT that prostate cancer can go into remission by eating a healthful diet. Of course, prostate cancer has a much better survival rate than pancreatic cancer. If Jobs had prostate cancer instead and reversed it through a healthful diet he'd look brilliant. However, neither mainstream treatment of cancer nor diet and exercise is an effective treatment for cancer of the pancreas.
      He probably got cancer from working with all sorts of carcinogens in a computer factory.

    • @meatbyproducts

      NUTCASE71733 if he would have listened t p his doctors when it was discovered he had a good chamce of survival. But he went the woo route and paid for it with his life. Placing bits of crystals and shit on cars to increase efficiency is something done by people who know nothing more than where the gas goes and which pedals are go and stop. Cars are miraculous feats of engineering, but that doesn't make them MAGIC!

    Wait a minute...there is no University of Malburg - mostly because there is no city, town or village of that name in Germany. Probably he meant Marburg...but it just shows again how much those woo-peddlers care about acuracy.

    It was in 1988 and we had some jerk trying to sell the idea that if you have the right crystal you will get better. This was at a HIV/ AIDS meeting. But it would only work if you have the right one for you and he would sell it and if it don't work only charge you 1/2 price to swap it for a new one.

    It's people like Jordan that make me cautious to keep minerals (as well as nifty rock formations) in my house. I have people come over and they think I'm into the whole pseudoscience bullshit When I really just like geology. And man, it's really been 6 years now since this video came out. Guess stupid is hard to change.

    I'm surprised Marymer didn't realize that it's possible that this 'spirit water' has a bit of an explanation to it. When you drink water, you don't taste the water itself, you taste the minerals inside of the water. So by putting in a rock, or crystal in the water for prolonged periods of time, it's possible that some sediments can be dissolved into the water, changing it's taste. As for how this affects your body? yeahno most likely placebo

    so... if crystals have likes/dislikes and can leave whenever they want.... does that make owning a crystal a form of slavery. lol

    Light saber crystals are useful. Especially the red ones.
