      In my opinion, I think it would be kind of rude to call all people who make claims of "alien abductions" as insane, most of them are definitely lying, but others have recalled consistent experiences under hypnosis. I dont want to make wild theorys of anything, but I dont think there is any guarantee that they are all high, or crazy.

      You said shadows can travel faster than light. Please look at the case where the absence of light of a particular wavelength falling on a photodetector is set as 0 and when the light is falling, the output is set as 1. Then in this case, wouldn't a shadow convey _information_ ?
      Now that I have typed this, I think this kind of physics is way over my head and Ishould stay within limits of my profession of engineering. 😂

    Having done enough hallucinogens to completely disconnect from reality: It's brain noise. It's what consciousness feels like through different paths than usual.
    The movement of information through the brain is what experience is. If you change how the information moves, you change what the experience is, just as surely as if you change what's physically happening. That does not mean you are "accessing alternate realities", what you are accessing is the ability to perceive the same patterns through different pathways. What it exposes is only about yourself, about what's inside you.
    The reason it seems like you're accessing something else is that it's all happening in the same circuitry. Hallucinations come from the part of your brain that tells the part of the brain that has internal awareness, the part that you think of as "you" "This is what reality is."
    Of course it's going to seem like reality changed. As far as the part of you that thinks is, reality actually did change, but not because of anything happening outside of your brain.
    Basically, what you think is reality is a mix of what the world is, and how the parts of you that cut apart and smear that out so that you can make sense of it actually go about doing so. Hallucinogens change how your brain cuts apart and smears out reality. Reroutes data, sends it to multiple locations at once, all sorts of noisy crap, and the part of you that makes a coherent story out of that then does its best to figure out what the hell is going on, and you get hallucinations.

    • @Mortiis558
      @Mortiis558 3 года назад +8

      Same with psychedelics, and I agree with pretty much everything you have said here. I’ve “talked to aliens” while high on DMT and it felt amazing, like you are being given a look into some other sort of reality. But then you come back and realize you just had a hallucination. There is nothing any more real about it than the dreams you have had all your life.

      @psychepeteschannel5500 3 года назад +1

      Exactly. But as Teth47 above said, it still may be useful. For therapy of course, but it could be useful even for gleaning something objective. Most scientists that discovered something new, had to try and look at the problem from all possible crazy angles they could manage. And brain functioning in "standard mode" may be physically unable to actually look at ALL the possibilities... If drugs induce such extreme differences in how information is processed, maybe we will discover how to use them to discover theories otherwise unimaginable. But maybe people will just use them to get smashed... who knows. :D

    • @Teth47
      @Teth47 3 года назад +2

      @ayy lmao It is extremely valuable for brains that are stuck in bad patterns. THe whole point of a hallucinogen is to break ordinary patterns in the first place, so it makes perfect sense that it would help with depression. It's a shame they've been illegal for so long, simply because the hippies had a point and the powers that be in the 60s decided to stomp them out.

      It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life...
      He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.
      He became so powerful... the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did.

      Because it wasn't concordant with reality outside confirmation bias and it's never reliably repeatable, scientificaly or not.
      Furthermore, The consequences to accepting the claim that knowledge can be apriori is that it leads to faith. When it is supposed that some knowledge exists and is valid without our need of deriving it from reality, it opens the door to pretending all knowledge can be like this. By denying the use of reason to form these abstract ideas, it claims there are alternative methods of gaining knowledge. By severing the tie to reality, it allows any idea to be accepted.
      This is why asking how you know something is/isn't knowledge is both a good question and also a Stupid question simultaniously without being necessarily contradictory as you need to know what knowledge is before you can know if you have it.
      It's the very thing Aron Ra talks about in his 4th episode in his series of foundational falsehoods of creationism. It is a logical fallacy illustrative of the fundamental sophistry behind the creationism movement; the idea that really really believing something is the same thing as knowing it.
      "Every religion claims to believe as they do because of reason, education, or intelligence given by their god in revelation. But whether they admit it or not, all of them are assuming their preferred conclusions on faith, and this would still be true even if all of their gods exist. Believe as hard as you want to. But convincing yourself however firmly still can’t change the reality of things. Seeing is believing. But seeing isn’t knowing. Believing isn’t knowing. Subjective convictions are meaningless in science, and eyewitness testimony is the least reliable form of evidence."

      While I agree the person being analysed was just making crazy shit up, I never liked the "debunk" through use of established theory. Relativity works well as a model... but it still is a model. The fact that "we would get imaginary mass in this equation" does not mean, that another, more inclusive model, will yield the same nonsensical result. Relativity itself surpassed the Newtonian model, which seems so "true", that most people nowadays (a century later) still think relativity is "weird" and really understand world in the older model... And considering we already KNOW something will likely have to be understood differently to reconcile relativity with the Standard model... I would not use this equation as a "Definitivie" proof of anything, especially not our "trust" in this model. I think most physicists would agree, that it has been on a very shaky ground, ever since quantum mechanics got proven so rigorously... But I liked the video, the other guy was so confused in his reasoning :D Just a point of constructive criticism.
      EDIT TLDR: the best we can say, is that it would make no sense in the current model... and if the person making stuff up is incapable of producing a new model to surpass relativity, there is no point in the argument. but it doesnt mean "duh, its untrue, because the math doesnt work" ... thats the kind of language I would not use as a science communicator :)

      Actually, this very video takes it seriously, even if Marty mocks it. By showing the math, he takes it seriously and shows us WHY it won't work.
      If Jordan had presented his own equation for how it could theoretically be possible to travel faster than light, Marty would have absolutely gone and analyzed it.
      But scientists generally dismiss claims that aren't backed up at least by solid math because they have nothing to test.
      And if they have nothing to test, then it's not science, and it's literally not their job to deal with it.

      The point I was trying to make is, that it is not "WRONG", it is just meaningless, without support of a new model, that could explain relativistic effects better than Einsteins relativity.
      I am not arguing against the conclusion, just the delivery. These are the slight things that give some people the idea of "science being arrogant".

      @psychepeteschannel5500 3 года назад

      Haha :D Good one. But just in case you were actually wondering about why "shadow carries no information", the bat signal is not really a carrier of information. It is a patern on a cloud, delivered there by the speed of light (the bat-signal lamp). And then it is delivered to batman via looking at the cloud - which is again, done at speed of light. The bat signal can move ACROSS the sky faster than the speed of light, but it only ever gets to the sky at speed of light, and then is only ever observed at the speed of light. So actually, it is at least twice slower, compared to actual communication at the speed of light :D

    Having had ketamine treatment for my PTSD (which was ineffective, unfortunately), I had some instances where it felt my entire reality fell apart, but I NEVER assumed that I had been transported into a new world, nor did it change any bit of my perspective on this metaphysical, unprovable nonsense. It's sad that this stuff continues to be perpetuated, and I've seen friends fall quickly into some of these ludicrous ideas, albeit falling far less into it than Jordan. No amount, nor type of drug is going to change that which we know about our reality.

    Requiring too much energy is not the reason warp drives/wormholes aren't feasible (and newer proposals don't require an impossible amount), rather it's that they require negative mass which probably doesn't and can't exist (as it lets you easily violate conservation of energy).

      @psychepeteschannel5500 3 года назад

      @@vakusdrake3224 Is that the reason for antimatter usage in Star trek? Wow, I never knew that. I assumed the science was proper on that one, that they are just using matter-antimatter colision to get a shitload of energy. Do you really need negative mass for warp? I thought that is only needed for wormholes and warpdrive would just be very technologically complicated AND require a lot of energy.

    "Well ankh my frequency and call me a space Jew!" is my new favorite expression.
    Also, in addition to the infinite energy/divide by zero/imaginary energy problem with accelerating past the speed of light, there's also the fact that nothing can move faster than the speed at which causality propagates without causing paradoxes (and the laws of physics appear to make true paradox impossible), but massless particles can move _at_ the speed of causality, and we just _call_ it the speed of light because we figured out how fast the massless particles that make up light travel before we figured out that causality was the reason. And one thing to add to the list of non-physical objects that can move faster than light (which I'm pretty sure you've mentioned in previous videos, but for completeness' sake): Points in spacetime, since spacetime can expand faster than objects can move within spacetime.

    I 've read of at least one scientist (Susan Blackmore) who started out believing in the paranormal because of pschedelic experiences, then became a skeptic after she tried -- and failed -- to prove that these experiences corresponded with reality. The "problem" was, she'd been using the scientific method honestly from the start, treating the idea "my [and others'] experiences were real and not hallucinatory" not as an axiom ("I know what I saw!") but as a hypothesis; and she realized that the evidence pointed in the other direciton.

    I guess Towlie did the minimum diligence by opening with a warning, "science fiction ahead". But it really is annoying how he uses such confidant language to describe events, yet includes so few hard details.
    You nailed it with the Voyager technobabble joke, btw.
    As for psychic powers, it's fun to imagine as part of a fantasy setting like Warhammer, but until two unrelated individuals can carry on and recite back a complete conversation, I remain unconvinced. And even then, one must still be skeptical of fraudsters.
    As for psychedelics and hallucinations brought on by certain meditation techniques, I've read a few books by Tibetan Buddhists that wrote about this. Basically, it's perfectly fine to acknowledge that these states are brought on by the drug or an oxygen deficiency. If it works to help a person make realizations about themselves and better achieve mental equanimity, then the experience was real in the sense that it happened to you, but not in any physical sense of reality. It's healthier to acknowledge that a spiritual vision of a saint or gods or aliens was merely a mental state that made one more open to understanding one's mind and nothing more. He's confusing a journey of self-discovery for a journey into the fifth dimension. He takes it all at face value instead of as the symbols used by one's mind.
    As an aside, they naturally disapproved of using drugs as a spiritual "short cut" because it's so easy to confuse hallucination from reality in those cases. Meditation requires discipline and guidance.

They looked like how I imagine aliens could look, like disturbing humanoids. To be hypothetically realistic though, no alien would see the Earth in its used-like-a-gas-station-toilet state, biosphere being smeared out of existence, humans with nukes running around, and want to stop off and say hello. They'd blacklist our planet if anything, possibly even do an exterminatus.

    When addressing the subject of shadows, or the illuminated zone from a flashlight, moving faster-than-light, I emphasize that they are an abstract, transient pseudo-object. They are defined purely based on an ever-changing collection of other real objects that have no direct causal influence on each other. If some photons you blocked would have struck a certain point in space-time, and some other photons you blocked would have landed a light-year away one second later, there's nothing significant about that.
