Hey Antoine don't know if you saw my last comment on the community post but I had a lot of thoughts (Long essay ahead) I believe Kuvira stood down for three main reasons 1st - Reputation: it's a lot easier to jump into a fight when you don't know what the other person is capable of. But when you do it'll definitely make you question yourself first. But that still doesn't mean you're immune to defeat. Similar to John Wick, his reputation alone was like the first attack / wall of defense that warded off or weakened most opponents. But he wasn't God, there were still a few people who could match him and even beat him. Kuvira didn't have a major ego but she did have a lot of confidence in her own abilities. When Korra's reputation started slipping Kuvira had no problem challenging and taunting her. Toph's reputation probably always remained rock solid. So whether Toph was still in fighting condition or not Kuvira definitely must've had to pause and think first before challenging her because reputation is a dangerous weapon. 2nd 7 v 1 fight: Toph took out most of her troops with one move which is definitely a great feat of power but honestly I don't think that was the deterrent for Kuvira. I don't find it out of character for Kuvira to challenge someone she knows is technically more powerful than her (i.e telling Korra she can use all four elements + the Avatar State) but without her troops the reality is she's now by herself versus 7 dangerous benders 5 powerful Beifongs, a lava bender & an air bender. Even Azula with all her skill and confidence knew she was out matched and stood down (before a sucker punch) in The Chase when she was up against the whole group. Whether or not Kuvira thought she could take on Toph or not she probably most definitely knew there was no point in even engaging in that 7 v 1 fight 3rd mission priorities: the fight is already not in her favor but maybe she would've jumped in at least and done her best if her mission required it, but it didn't. Her #1 priority is to protect the weapon and herself, if those two things were threatened then she would be forced to act. But our protagonists weren't there to stop her or the weapon, they were just there to get their family back and leave. Since they didn't pose an immediate threat to her mission her involvement is no longer required. Like when the gang was chasing Azula on the day of black sun Sokka had to remind them that that's not their main mission and was unnecessary. Capturing the Beifongs is important but not her main mission at the moment so it makes no sense to go out of her way to chase them. The fight is now out of her favor and unnecessary. These are only my opinions but I believe this is why Kuvira chose to stand down that day.
Love toph to death and in her prime she is probably the best earthbender of all time. But at 86 years old i dont think she can beat the very underrated Kuvira. People say Toph was destroying Korra but never mention that it was on Toph's home turf the swamp and Korra still being poisoned, but never bring up that Kuvira also destroyed Korra even after she had taken the poison out and in a neutral arena
at the battle of zhaofu korra wasn't healed yet, and kuvira took advantage of that. their fight at republic city really demonstrated korra's regained ability
@@ComboKash As a clarification Korra states "its been a while but ive got a lot of pent up rage" and Kuvira says "i know youre a lil rusty". "youre a lil off your game"
@@jamilmoscoso6776 she was healed (all the poison removed) but her connection to Raava was still weakened. She did still have PTSD about Zaheer as well
@@mixedworld183 nah. Both are powerful and Smart. And very tricky and kuvira was very creative with how she fought and Azula never fought a metal bender before really but i do this Azula has a good chance
Out of context but who else thinks there should be some kind of tales of avatar mini series. Like diving into sokka's life or origins of the red lotus or like amon's early life and even Bolin and mako's parents.....stories like those...I know I'd watch that.
I honestly don't know. I just feel like the way the scene itself was filmed implies that Toph is out of everyone's league. The new generation of earth/metal benders including her descendants didn't manipulate as large volumes of earth with similar precision as Toph or Bumi did. I just think that it's a simple plot contrivance that they tried to justify with her line about being old. Although I'm not trying to downplay Kuvira's abilities.
What I notice is that folks seems to do mental gymnastics to make excuses for Toph when the answer is rather clear. If Toph is leagues above everyone else. Then she would end it. This is Toph we’re talking about (she don’t take stuff from anyone... so turning tail is atypical for her).
I don’t think it’s a plot contrivances for Toph to be old. Being old and having more physical ailments is natural. Toph is still a better earth bender but that doesn’t make her the strongest fighter. Toph was able to catch everyone off guard with that earth wave but if she were to engage with Kuvira, the fight would drag out and Kuvira’s troops would be able to rally. Toph just isn’t in the position to come out cleanly from that fight unless you want to have a God Mode Toph save the day which isn’t that interesting imo. Toph saw an opening to get her and her family out with the least chance of casualties so she took it. Fighting would be too much of a gamble.
@@AntoineBandele See the issue here is I believe it was her choice not to as she would have supporting combatants to help her, so I find it hard to believe she wouldn't challenge if she had backup but that's my take
@@AntoineBandele I'm not excluding your scenario, 'cause I do think that Kuvira didn't engage in a fight because of Toph's reputation. However every og's character has significantly changed since they were kids, so that could be the reason why she chose not to fight.
It seems you are forgetting what happened when you did a toph vs kuvira lol Jk even I believe what you said. Toph must've been the potential of young kuvira at zaofu. The fact that the generations of beifongs, with a lavabender(who has a Pokemon type advantage) decided not to fight the Earth empire, and toph got defeated by a mecha in the comics, shows that everyone has their prime which ends
I don’t think I would want Toph to fight, because she would definitely lose, but I would want to see more of what she could do in her old age, and how far her metal bending has progressed.

It would definitely be Kuviras fight to win, shes shown her endurance before, in fact right before this moment, so she could definitely outlast an old Toph.
I think one of the main things people tend to forget about in discussions such as prime Toph vs Kuvira is that Kuvira was a metalbending specialist. Toph might have invented it, but that doesn't make her a better metalbender. It's probably even the opposite; Kuvira was able to learn from all the progress made by Toph and others in regard to metalbending. Kuvira, as someone who hard-focused on metalbending, would have been able to learn from a much higher floor than Toph was, because Toph had to create that floor to begin with. Raising the floor in a skill means the ceiling tends to be higher as well, in general. Pair all of that with the slightly more modern style of fighting, and I think the battle of prime Toph vs prime Kuvira really isn't as clear-cut as some people make it out to be.
I disagree with you. A lot of people forget the fact that toph is blind and that’s what makes her the greatest earth bender of all time and her reaction speed. To metal bend you have to make movements and toph sees all of it with her feet so technically she can see into the future like the sharingan in naruto. Everything kuvira would do toph would see and counter before she can even make a move
That's not actually true in that series, kuvira learned metal bending from su Lin and in that skill alone they were relatively even, toph admits herself and most important we actually see it that toph is much better metal bender than both of her daughters and through out the legend of Korra we are let to believe that they plus kuvira are the best metal benders on treir time,so it actually makes sense that toph would still be best in metalbending.
Bumi was in a metal box for basically 2/3 of the show, and I don't think he could've pulled off a prison Iroh workout routine in there, yet he busted out in peak physical condition, so it kind of seems like he is just naturally in that good of shape despite his age. I don't know where the idea that he was constantly working to maintain his physical condition comes from
I agree, Toph in her old age wouldn't have been as physically strong as Kuvira, and that would be huge factor to determine the outcome. I think another reason Kuvira didn't challenge Toph is because she likely had a lot of respect for her. With Toph being the Greatest Earthbender and creator of metalbending, Kuvira probably admired her for many years, and didn't want to engage in a fight against someone she admired like that
RonnyLamar KylesJr. No its not that, Look toph is old, shes not what she used to be in her prime, it was most likely out of respect, and because it wouldn’t be a good idea to fight toph because toph is greatly admired. It would look bad for her propaganda. Toph is strong yes. But she will most likely not be able to keep up with kuvira due to her old age.
Fair argument, buy I feel like Toph's seismic scene is a noble factor we need to notice. The only times she was caught of guard was when she was distracted. And Kuvira's fighting style makes it that Toph could easily create rock walls to defend herself. It really just depends on intelligence since I would consider them equal matched even though I favour Toph in this match up
The fact that Bumi lived for so long sometimes is the fact that he was present during the comet's arrival and that extended his life just like it extended Sozin's life as he managed to live to 102 years old, it's just a theory but I kind of like it
Completely agree. Do think Toph in her old age would've definitely lost. Aside from the reputation, I also think Kuvira didn't challenge her with the fact that others were around and they could just easily flee anyway even if she'd jumped down to face them.
Old Toph reminds me of Yoda a powerful warrior spending the rest of their days in a swamp. Also, because of age she would want to end a fight as fast as possible if forced to be in one
I think that Kuvira wouldn’t have DARED attack Toph. I think Kuvira would lose so much support if she even attempted to attack Toph, win or lose. . . As far as the fight , idk who wins, but you dont attack and defeat an old weaker version of your nations latest greatest hero! Bad bad bad idea for publicity
I am going to get much hate for this but I think Kuvira is the best metalbender we see, because Toph needs to touch the metal to bend it but Kuvira's bending is really smooth
As a Toph stan who's disabled by chronic pain and other neurological damage, it's weirdly comforting to think that, even though blindness couldn't slowed Toph down, muscle and joint pain could.
Toph lost to a mech in the comics and Suyin had to save her from Bolin I doubt old Toph wants to fight Kuvira considering she couldn’t fight Bolin Heck if you read that comic you see the move old Toph does to fight a mech Kuvira also does Read Ruins of the Empire trilogy everyone
@@alfreddozier832 Prime Toph i get, but Old Toph really. son't understand that i mean this ain't star wars where she can use the force to keep herself going and pull a Yoda.
Depends on the Toph. I’d say pre-teen Toph loses because she’s still developing metalbending to a master level. But teen and late teens Toph should be taking solid victories against Kuvira. And adult Toph should be winning 9-10/10.
I think as long as Kuvira’s feet on the ground, Toph would have high possibilities to beat her. And I think the only reason why she didn’t fight Kuvira because she actually didn’t care. She only wanted to save her family and that’s her priority. But when she left the town she knew that saving world was not her problem anymore. That’s why she gave the responsibility to the kids. While I agree that Kuvira didn’t fight Toph because of reputation.
I completely agree, however, I think the general fandom underestimates Kuvira’s abilities. From what was seen in book four of Korra, I believe that she may have been on par or close to Toph’s metalbending abilities. Her quick jabs are reminiscent of modern style earth bending as seen in the pro bending arena, which is very different from Toph’s more traditional style. In my opinion, I think Kuvira could go head to head with prime Toph, I don’t believe she’d win, but I think she’d fair far better than most.
I think Toph was in a situation like Iroh was. She was uncertain she could beat Kuvira but I also believe that Toph could but slightly. I think Tophwas much more enlightened at this time, hence her hesistance to violence, like we see with Jeong Jeong and his altercations with the fire nation

I'd like to see a VS video with Mai VS Ty Lee and Aang's Team Avatar VS Korra's Team Avatar (working together, not fighting an opponent with the same element, like Mako VS Zuko, for example).
just curious, do you think there would be any way for Kuvira to take advantage of Toph being blind? Such as keeping a boulder in the air so that Toph wouldn't be able to see it and then crush her. Toph could see Kuvira get the boulder but once Kuvira got in the air Toph would have to judge where the boulder is by Kuvira's stance leaving her vulnerable. Again just curious so let me know what you think.
Anna way No way, Toph said herself that Lin and Su Yin dont use Metal bending like she does and Toph is the INVENTOR of Metal Bending... Kuvira wouldnt know what Metal Bending was if it wasnt for Toph
Im just saying if there were to be a fight the only way i see toph losing is if kuvira could drag it out until then and i sont think thats likely becasue of how strong Tophs bending is. I agree she isnt as physicaly strong but her bending is so much stronger.
Toph would have won quickly, she wouldn't allow the fight to go on for a long time. Plus I doubt she was out of practise as she was alone in the swamp. And showed great prediction and power in all the scenes she was in.

I just smh that I have to explain myself. I honestly don’t care if people think Toph wins at all. The main issue I have is when they think she can insta-stomp, which I personally find silly.
Lol yes! Agreed! We are kind of used to that narrative in Anime’s and cartoons at times aren’t we? Ichigo May lose at times but he almost always wins and though Ash frequently loses the Pokémon League, Pikachu is his powerhouse. Let’s not start on Goku... he just embodies a walking W at all times. People are also so quick to disregard any statement that is in disagreement with there own and that is immature. It’s one thing to disagree and another to be oblivious to a difference that you have not considered or have ever been privy to. I love that you brought up the importance of explanation because explaining reasoning is SO important. I grew up in the early 2000’s where it was often common place to say because I said so and you don’t need an explanation, all statements that did not help create proper grounds of establishing trust. I’m going down a hole here but you are perfect, and this video shows it.
I think Old Toph can definitely take her. In Kuvira’s fight against “poisoned Korra”, Kuvira is not that light on her feet. She has impressive footwork, but that’s really all Toph needs to destroy her. Toph could probably just pull her into the ground and end it right there.
I think Toph did tip the scales enough for Kuvira to doubt being able to take the whole group. That encounter was likely the first time Kuvira ever met Toph, and Kuvira probably didn't want to gamble with finding out what Toph was still capable of. I think victory was an uncertainty on both sides, but of course Toph's priority was getting her family out of there.
1) Toph was STILL impressive with what she actually did in the episode, and I think that blinds people to how she'd lose to Kuvira like you said. 2) Something you didn't mention--all the other Beifongs. Even just Suyin and Toph working together might have been able to beat Kuvira, although Toph was probably already hurting at this point. And after almost losing completely, it makes sense that Suyin and the rest of her family just wanted to take the win and get out of there.
I had to pause for a minute in the video that I simply put the same ideals as what Zuko and Iroh said, defeating the firelord is the avatar destiny, and defeating his brother wouldn't stop the war. Toph had the same intellectual aspect that challenging Kuvira isn't her fight, its the avatar fight for peace
It's hard to say so I'm just gonna go 50/50, the reason being is Tophs vision, she can see EVERYTHING around her and people underestimate that and which is why I think Kuvira didn't attack her. If Toph had to fight I'd give her the slight edge because of this BUT her age may still be a major hinder since Kuvira is so swift and agile so I'll have to say 50/50
5:23 I dunno! I kinda disagree on this Part! 😄 Especially that Toph can see everything when her Feet are on the Earth! She doesn't need to move Quickly to kick someone's Butt! 😄 *"You need to find someone who waits and listen first before they can Attack!"- King Bumi*

I don't find it out of character for Kuvira to challenge someone she knows is technically more powerful than her (i.e telling Korra she can use all four elements + the Avatar State) but without her troops the reality is she's now by herself versus 7 dangerous benders
5 powerful Beifongs, a lava bender & an air bender. Even Azula with all her skill and confidence knew she was out matched and stood down (before a sucker punch) in The Chase when she was up against the whole group. Whether or not Kuvira thought she could take on Toph or not she probably most definitely knew there was no point in even engaging in that 7 v 1 fight
3rd mission priorities: the fight is already not in her favor but maybe she would've jumped in at least and done her best if her mission required it, but it didn't.

Comics
I'm still waiting on Toph and Zuko's life changing journey together.
Yeah I think it would add more depth to alot of characters we know so little about
I honestly don't know.

And the seismic sense ability was only thought to her children and the avatar
With Toph being the Greatest Earthbender and creator of metalbending, Kuvira probably admired her for many years, and didn't want to engage in a fight against someone she admired like that
She didn't challenge Toph, out of respect, or because she was seriously outnumbered.

I feel that toph would put up a good fight but ultimately kuvira would win.
But young toph would wreck kuvira
Depends on the Toph. I’d say pre-teen Toph loses because she’s still developing metalbending to a master level. But teen and late teens Toph should be taking solid victories against Kuvira. And adult Toph should be winning 9-10/10.
@@AntoineBandele how about middle aged Toph vs baby Kuvira
she could she just wasn't in the mood and wanted to give korra a chance
I think as long as Kuvira’s feet on the ground, Toph would have high possibilities to beat her. And I think the only reason why she didn’t fight Kuvira because she actually didn’t care. She only wanted to save her family and that’s her priority. But when she left the town she knew that saving world was not her problem anymore. That’s why she gave the responsibility to the kids. While I agree that Kuvira didn’t fight Toph because of reputation.
When kuvira saw toph take out her army in seconds she knew she wouldn’t stand a chance
He literally spoiled it at the beginning
When toph moved the ground i thought it was like 3 earthbenders
I thought its was pretty common to think that Toph probably cant defeat Kuvira because of her old age implied by her "back killing" her😮
Me too
And then there's Zuko. Almost 100 years old and throwing hands with super benders. He's never too old for HONOR
The blind bandit loses to nobody her only weakness is twinkle toes. Last I checked kuvira wasnt twinkle toes
I love toph to death but i don’t think she’s as op as ppl make her out to be
I also figured that neither of them wanted to risk injury/losses, as even a landslide victory would have consquenses
I think Toph was in a situation like Iroh was. She was uncertain she could beat Kuvira but I also believe that Toph could but slightly. I think Tophwas much more enlightened at this time, hence her hesistance to violence, like we see with Jeong Jeong and his altercations with the fire nation

just curious, do you think there would be any way for Kuvira to take advantage of Toph being blind?
Such as keeping a boulder in the air so that Toph wouldn't be able to see it and then crush her.
Toph could see Kuvira get the boulder but once Kuvira got in the air Toph would have to judge where the boulder is by Kuvira's stance leaving her vulnerable.
Again just curious so let me know what you think.
She might boost herself into the air and attempt to shoot Toph with her metal plates.

I think it's possible for the elder Benders to be stronger Benders but weaker fighters.
If this fight was ever written Toph would stomp.
Logically though Toph would lose. Badly.
Mmhm. This.
I think Kuvira met Toph before when she was young.
