As the Earth Avatar after Korra, I'm gonna challenge myself and just do Korra characters, because most would probably still be around: Earth: Bolin, he is naturally talented, but also a fun guy to be around. He'd make sure you were getting it before moving on. Air: Jinora, she is very spiritually inclined, and isn't as dogmatic as her father, while still being able to teach the ancient ways quite effectively. Water: This is a tough one... probably Eska and Desna, they are both powerful benders, and it's possible they learned spirit bending. Do have to keep an eye on them, though. Fire: General Iroh, he is military minded, while also knowing when the rules should be bent for the greater good.

zaheer was nothing in comper with a real master like tenzin so hell no not him. tenzin is not spiritual so jinora maybe better choice other than aang amon was good but definitaly wasnt master bender he just abused his power. a real master bender in that department is hard to choose but ill go with katara who eventually got great.
Zaheer was an expert martial artist and spiritual leader. He was very good. I'd say just a little less than a master like tenzin. But what do you expect? He only got his bending for just a few days. I'm sure he'll be a master if given more time. Not to mention he was self-taught.
Going with the flow of if I was next, which would start at Earth. Toph for ability to wait and strike with intelligent but straightforward attacks. Iroh for fire to have spirituality. Ty Lee for air and evasion and chi blocking as an alternative or addition to attacks. And finally Katara as she had difficulty learning her element at first which may give her insight which I could use if I ever struggled while learning the elements.

Fire: Iroh Air: Jinora Earth: Toph Water: Hama Melee: Ty Lee I think I would be born a waterbender and develop a natural flow and sense of community (like I currently have); so I feel my waterbending master could be one who is more resourceful, steadfast and manipulates nature in ways unknown to standard bending masters. That kind of talent and creativity doesn’t come around often. The same almost applies to Toph. She also used her bending to not only fight physically, but with exceptional mental and sensory power, never seen before. And of course metal bending came out of this. People think Bumi is better; but he lived for over 100 years and never thought metal bending possible at all. I want a balance of people who are in tune with the natural, physical and spiritual worlds so I can be taught them all in equal measure. This is why I picked both Jinora and Iroh. Both are masters of their bending elements but have unparalleled spiritual connections compared to any other benders, with the exceptions of the Avatars themselves. Ty Lee is self-explanatory. She is just great 😅 chi-blocking and martial arts/acrobatics, who doesn’t want that? This combo gives a strong balance of spirituality which is clearly heavily linked to bending, masterful physical bending techniques, unique resourcefulness/creativity in practice, unmatched sensory attunement; and a swathe of advanced bending techiques (metal bending, healing, blood bending, lightning bending and redirection, astral projection and chi-blocking)

My nation: Earth Kingdom My choices: Earth - King Bumi (Toph may be the greatest earthbender and Suyin may be a great mentor, but Bumi is perfect for me. He's a strategist, always thinking ahead versus thinking big. He helps you think outside the box. He's powerful and strong in political matters, which would make him an excellent teacher for an Avatar overall.) Fire - Zuko (I believe that Iroh would be too complex for me to understand and, despite Zuko barely understanding him, I believe everything he has gone through, plus his ability to make sense of what Iroh says makes him an asset that would be great for a firebending instructor. Air - Jinora (She's incredibly talented and smart, extremely powerful, well-read, creative, and incredibly good at the spiritual stuff. Not to mention that she's the granddaughter of Aang) Water - Katara (Close to Atuat but won by a couple hairs; She's a prodigy, picking up bloodbending after only one training session, despite her aversion for using it. She's soft and strong and teaches very well. And she can teach healing, seeing as how she could care less for the traditions. Along with the practice of healing comes spiritbending, so she would help me become a spiritually strong Avatar as well)

Fire: Iroh. Wise, witty, easy to warm up to and has genuine theoretical and practical knowledge, while not veering too far into either rigour or permissiveness. Also unlike Jeong Jeong/Azula, doesn't rely on negativity or cold ambition for the source of his fire. Water: Katara because I love katara and we would be best friends because I said so. She is wildly talented, gentle but also stern, skilled at healing and she is just a great teacher in general. Even if she probably wouldn't teach me bloodbending which I REALLY want to learn. Earth: oof this is hard but Kyoshi. Kyoshi is NOT a bloodthirsty crazy person like fanon makes her to be. She is disciplined and powerful but she wouldn't make me go wishy washy and help me make decisive endeavours. Air: Jinora! She is connected to the spirit world, is pretty talented and has experience of mentioning airbenders. I also just really like her chill vibes.
Earth: King Bumi, a literal mad genius and one of the most powerful earth bender in the franchise Air: Monk Gyatso, a great fatherly figure and would always instill hope into your heart (a super powerful air bender) Fire: Iroh, no explanation needed Water: Amon, a top water bender in the franchise, and would definitely bring a sense of discipline to the team ( plus he is the most powerful blood bender ever , so if were ever in a tight spot he could just make whoever is giving us a hard time go away)
This was so much fun to listen to. I especially liked your last choice. Never heard of that earth bender before but i get the impression he would teach the avatar with an ulterior motive. I can see the avatar being manipulated by him and will need the help of his other masters to see the truth. That would be awesome to watch for a new season since the two shows we have now usually have the avatar in the right. I would like to see the avatar be in the wrong and low key be a villain
Earth: Lin Water: (Undecided between Unalaq and Kya. I’d say Unalaq because he’s good with the spirits, Kya because she’s a good water bender for an excellent healer.) Fire: (Undecided, but ill go with Iroh) Air: Jinora Best friend: Varrick or Bolin.
Given that they are all focused on me being the best avatar and not personal gains he is doing who I would pick for each element Fire: Fire Lord Sozin (The Menace) I chose Sozin because he is ambitious as shown when he tried to take over the world, and when that ambition is translated into something positive, he would be a great mentor as he would always believe that I had more growth in fire bending. He also is has a complex understanding of firebending, being proficient enough to harness power from a comet. Air: Monk Gyatso (The Free-Thinker) Gyatso would be a great air bending master since he is not only considered one of the best masters of all time (the best around the time he was Aang’s guardian) and he shows prowess in air bending since he could take out a whole room of boosted soldiers without touching them. He would also be a great spiritual guide, and fill the same role as Iroh does with endless wisdom yet still fun loving. Water: Hama (The Witch) Although she is insane in the show, given that she doesn’t care about revenge on the fire nation anymore and is serving me as a water bending master, not only does she have strong bending technique, but Hama is the most creative water bender on the show and given that water is the element of change, learning with someone who had the natural ingenuity to pull water from air and plants and manipulate water in living people would allow me to further push the boundaries of what water bending can do. Also, as avatar I would rather know how to blood bend and never use it once then to have to deal with someone like Yacone while powerless unless I’m in the Avatar state. Hama was also very caring toward Katara in the first stages of her training and considering that her sole priority is to teach me, if she were to snap on me it wouldn’t be so severe especially since she is passionate about passing on Southern style water bending Earth: Ghazan (The Rogue) I chose Ghazan for earth because as a member of the Red Lotus (former in this circumstance) not only would I be able to deal with the Red Lotus preemptively, I would also most likely learn new or forgotten bending styles. Ghazan is also the most masterful non-avatar lava bender and since the avatar in canon can bend lava, having him teaching me to do it would allow me to become extremely proficient. He is also shown to be down to earth when he is in the back of the vehicle talking to Bolin which would be nice when I can’t handle the stress from Sozin and Hama or the aloof wisdom from Gyatso A common theme between all of my masters is that they think outside of the box or bend in unique ways (Sozin harnessing the comet, Gyatso’s room vacuum, Hama blood bending, Ghazan lava bending)
Air: Gyatso- Master Airbender who predominantly taught Ang to become a master of airbending at a very young age. Many years of experience and has taught two generations of avatars (Roku and Ang) so he has the most experience with traditional yet creative forms of airbending which is necessary to become a master, very skilled at pysho as well so I would like to see Iroh vs Gyatso in a pysho match, also being an elder monk he must be familiar with the teachings of Guru Laghima and his mastery of airbending Water: Katara- caring attitude, cool nerves, master healer, master water bender, can manipulate blood, ice, and water, and her arguments with Toph would be funny Earth: Toph- seismic sense, metal bending, tough teacher for a tough element, and allows me to enjoy myself occasionally and is friendly if you are on her good side. Quoted by King Bumi "You must find a teacher that listens to the Earth" Toph is the master at sensing what is around her before attacking which makes her so versatile Fire: Iroh- lightning redirection, philosophy, pysho skills, master firebender, teaches the original form of fire bending through passion and not aggression, and makes a mean Jasmine tea
For me I would choose Toph as an earth bending master not only because she uses earth bending but thinks of earth bending in a different way than most earth benders do. She uses earth bending to see, listen and feel, and thru that I think is why she learned she could metal bend. As far as air bending I think Tenzin would have been the perfect choice because his only leadership of air bending was from his father and that's only a generation. There is a saying,"to be a good leader you have to be a good follower", and I think that is perfect in his case because if you want to change a method of education on anything you have to go thru YOUR method of education in order to figure out what works best or not.
Imagine if Po Li, Bolin, Guru Laghima and Amon taught an Avatar, and imagine if the avatar learned how to do their unique abilities. A bloodbending, lava bending, flying, combustion bending Avatar. Damn
I know this comment is old but I would choose Iroh over Po Li just because I feel like I would kill my self with combustion bending since the 2 combustion benders we know in avatar died because of combustion bending
My masters would be, Water: Katara or Moon Spirit/Yue but probably Katara Air: Gyatso Earth: Kyoshi or Suyin Fire: Iroh or Dragons Non-bending: Suki 😇😇😇 Katara because she is a very powerful waterbender and would teach me to be a skillful and talented waterbender maybe even one of the most powerful and she'd be compassionate and she has had experience with 2 Avatars so she would be really really good at knowing what to do when everything is wrong and she would teach me to be a light to the world. I also think we would connect well and be good friends. She could also teach me healing and it'll be really useful. Moon Spirit because they are the original waterbender. Gyatso because he is a great aorbender and he will teach me important lessons that will help me with the whole Avatar thing. Kyoshi because she was a really good earthbending and she could also teach me hand to hand combat with fans and swords and she could lend me wisdom about being the Avatar and it will be insightful. Suyin because she's really good and she would teach me to be a great metalbender and even better earthbender. Iroh because he's wise and will really be my console and he'd really help me out and I could lean on him when things are bad. He could also teach me lightningbending and lightning redirection which would be cool. Dragons because they are the original masters and they would teach me how to be a really good firebender and what being a firebender means. 😇😇😇
My Team Avatar would be *Fire - Zuko* | I would love someone that I could be a “buddy” with! We could talk about problems and stuff! Making the teaching process trust reliant! *Water - Master Pakku* | I would love someone on my team to be someone strict! So that I would still see the “traditional” aspects of bending! Cause as we see in LoK bending has this “modern” touch! I could stay on my roots *Air - Jinora* | We all know that air bending is spiritually inclined! And that Jinora is one of the most spiritual character in the franchise! Hence I want her not just to train me in air bending but also spiritually as an Avatar! *Earth - Lin Beifong* | someone that is though with me! Not like traditionally strict but reckless though! You know what I mean! You might say might as well go with Toph! I already have Master Pakku with me (trains me traditionally) so better to have someone who can train me in “modern/alternative” bending! *still conflicted between Iroh and Zuko simply because Iroh also trained different bending styles!
I'm going to change the parameters of the game a little and assume, that if I were the next avatar my masters would have to be among characters are who are still alive by the end of korra: Fire: General Iroh the 2nd - I really liked this character and what we've seen of him, he's a dynamic fighter capable of adapting to different situations (like he fought well against Amon's airplanes despite it being the first time that invention had ever been revealed) + I feel like he would have a lot of distilled knowledge and wisdom from Izumi, Zuko, and Iroh (the 1st) Air: Jinora - The easiest pick for me. Tenzin is too hard of a teacher while Zaheer is to much of ideologue. Not to mention the element of Air is usually regarded as the most spiritually charged element so Jinora would be a great teacher for that side of the element. Kai as a master would also be a good pick, as I feel like he represents the freedom of the element really well. Water: Kya - I'm working under the assumption that Katara would have probably passed away by the time of the next avatar after Korra. Most of the avatars have focused on the combat elements of water while neglecting the healing elements and Kya is known to be one of the best healers in the world. Additionally she's capable enough to teach combat as well. Earth: I really like Suyin (and honestly she's probably the 2nd most impressive earth bender in LoK after Toph herself) but Kya and Jinora are already considered pretty free-spirited so for Earth I would opt for some more rigid to give my team avatar some necessary structure: the backbone of the group. For Earth that would have to be Kuvira. Despite being misguided, Kuvira's intentions weren't evil in my opinion and if she's reformed by the time of the next avatar, she would be a great person to teach the most stubborn of the elements
Here are mine: Fire: Iroh (Cause I mean, cmon, it’s Iroh) Water: Tonraq (He’s got a really interesting style of teaching, very aggressive, different from other waterbenders. I feel he can teach a lot) Air: Jinora (She’s technically a master, and has the strongest connection to the spirit world rivaling Aang’s ability. Super good choice in my opinion) Earth: Lin (Ok, I feel like I’d need some tough love from an Earth bending teacher, who better than the bitter queen herself? She’s also a master metal bender and smart as hell)
Personally if I could pick my instructors/team avatar they would be: 1. Iroh 2. Jinora 3. Tarrlok 4. Suyin 5. Suki 6. Asami I'd have instructors who are intelligent, skilled fighters knowledgeable in advanced bending and non bending combat techniques, savvy and connected political operators, spiritual guides who are compassionate, wise and fun and all my instructors would be of different ages, genders, would come from privileged and non privileged backgrounds alike and would similarly be benders and non benders alike as well so I'd have a very diverse range of views, opinions and experiences to draw from to help me become as balanced and capable an avatar as I feel I could possibly be.

My Version: I am just going to asume that I will have the same personality as I do now. I'd be born as an air nomade. I do identify strongly with airbenders as I fit the classical eir nomade personality, especially their weaknesses, quite well. Air: Monk Gyatso Growing up in the air tempels I would choose a master who would give me the freedome I need. I grew up with a twin brother who had always struggeled with physical tasks (walking,swimming,...) which is the reason I became very creative and quite good at teaching me things myself and in that regard MOnk Gyatso seems like the obvios choice, Water: Katara My favourite element! There are many great water beanding masters but the reasons I chose katara are the many sub bending styles she knows. Plant bending in particular is something I'd like to master. I grow a lot of my own food, am trying to create knew varieties of vegetables and can identify most of the plants native to my country. Also healing is an immensely underrated skill amongst avatars. Fire: Iroh You know why Earth: Toph She is for one an amazing earthbender but what sets her appart from the reast of the earth bending masters is her personality. We have the same humour and also her style of teaching would make me face my weaknesses and fears. but from my masters only Toph would be in my team avatar missing are: Water: Tonraq I love this man so much in every way imaginable Fire: non Bender: Ty Lee Someone needs to hold the group together and she can teach me a lot. Story: So I start my life at the air temples living a live simular to aang with the biggest diffrence being that I don't get told I'm the Avatar until my 16th Birthday. Then I start my journey as the avatar, my first destination being the southern water tribe. I spend 2 years there being thought by an elderly Katara (50-60) perfecting my water bending. Whilst I'm there I meet a young Tonraq who has just been banned grom the northern water tribe after destroying the woods around the spirit world portals. We fall in love but need to keep it a secret to the rest of the tribe due to their conservative believes. He doesn't talk much about his past until one day Unalaq shows up and forces me to open the portal and we fight in the spirit world. In LOK Unalaq is a powerfull earthbender but in this version he is less expirienced so he is not a big challange to me. After defeating him me and Tonraq sail to the earth kingdom looking for an earth bending master.
Fire: Azula- Her ferocity and precision are amazing, and although she's incredibly entitled to her father's empire, when you remove her brokenness she's the best person in the franchise at reading people and situations. I feel like Bumi and Zaheer could balance out her past. Air: Zaheer- I want to learn to fly. Also Zaheer is all about adaptation. He's someone who'd help me add airbending to my natural fighting style. He's also incredibly spiritual and all about balance. Water: Amon- I was going to say Paku, but he's too old guard at the end of the day. Amon would keep me honest and probably remind me of the non-benders, even if he had his own motives for his revolution. Earth: Bumi- Steadfast in his ways, and someone who knows how to find pleasure in boring situations in order to drive home the importance of patience.
Fire: Iroh (I need a lot of wisdom) Earth: Toph (so I can train my seismic senses) Air: Monk Gyatso (a father figure who mastered airbending? hell yeah) Water: Ming-Hua (an armless super aggressive waterbending master, who would say no?) Tactician: Sokka (great leader with a lot of great ideas and have senses of humor)
Fire: Iroh Water: Unalaq Air: Jinora Earth: Suyin Everyone loves Iroh, no explanation needed. For Unalaq it's the unique control he has, plus his connection to the spirits, though hopefully that radical nature is toned down since he'd see spirits are in the world now. Oh and politics. For airbending I'd love to learn spirit projection, and well currently she's the only option. Plus I just feel her style would fit me better than any other master airbender. Lastly Suyin provides support when needed, and is a very free form of earthbending which I feel I'd benefit from. Oh and politics from a different perspective.
i know im late for the party but my list would be: fire: iroh for obvious reasons... lighting bending and redirection wisdom great teacher air: monk gyatso he is a strong air bender fending off 10+ firebenders powered by sozins comet being cornered in a small room also has a playfull and fun side earth: toph its a close one between her and bumi but i dont think bumi has the seismic sense and he cant metal bend which are both must have water: katara she is kind and has knowledge of most things you need to know she is just a good allround waterbender
On your point of Katara being a prodigy, if you are an empathic person who is open to learn and your around a prodigy like Aang, oddly enough, what happens is that they rub off on you. You also have to take into account that they’re always fighting. That means they’re always applying. A freethinking mind comes up with things on the fly. Katara had no choice but to become a prodigy, unlike Toph. 👦🏾
I agree with your choices except how Aang was surrounded by Prodigies, I think they all progressed through the series and learned the best because they didn’t have traditional teachers. We should chat about it.
My earth master would be Toph since she is a master earth bender, discovering metal bending, and she has a lot of experience teaching from in between tla and lok

If I want somebody who can make me the most powerful give me Fire: Ozai he can teach me to lightning bend like a boss and is just overall super powerful. Air: Guru laghima for the sole reason of reaching me how to fly Water: Amon he can make me blood bend powerfully Earth: Toph she can teach me how to metal bend
Iroh and Katara are definite picks, either as a team or individual. For Air, I'd have to go with Jinora. Earth is the hardest pick. But I knows the political game and has great strengths, but doesn't do the advanced subdisciplines. And it would feel weird having two old dudes and two young women. Suyin was my first pick, but I'm starting to think maybe Old Toph, for a tough love approach?
I love this concept and I wish I had a page and good editors so I could do one as well I feel you all missed a key point in your choices but history has shown that bad guys think outside of the box with their skill set so the masters I feel would be best are all bad guys 1 because it's a way of thinking that good guys never contemplate and 2 you can always still learn the proper basics and bending techniques from other masters and incorporate all you've learned. Imagine being the avatar and knowing combustion bending or psychic blood bending not because of what they could do but because if you have that much control over the rare techniques imagine how powerful your normal techniques will have to be. Zaheers method of air bending is like no other he even learned to fly. Now having a lava bender teach you and then traveling to learn from Tophs daughter... who's seriously stopping that avatar

I would choose Fire: Zuko ( beacuse he doesn't only use Firebending techniques but also air, watet, and earth in a firebending way and is as Firelord also a polititian and can help with politics) Air: Ginora ( she could also help with Spirit stuff and was shown as a good teacher) Water: Katara (knows a lot of bending Styels like healing and kind of Bloodbending) Earth: Toph ( is baisicly the best Earthbender and can Metalbend) or Bolin ( can teach lavabending but not metalbending but is also not as "mean" as Toph)

Water: Amon, generally the most versitile bender in the show with also chee blocking as well as blood bending. Also I'd feel as if he as the ability to isolate weakness. Air: Aang (end of book 3): as well as being a prodigy I feel at this point he's very mature and centered. Plus he also has Avatar experience at this point. Earth: Suyin, simply by the reasons already given. Fire: Iroh because no shit (though I did consider Roku and Mako) however if I could take either or both Ran and Chaw (dragons) I'd take them instead
I disagree with Laghima as the airbending teacher. His way of thinking directly clashes with what the Avatars way of thinking should be. His way of thinking was ridding yourself of all earthly attachments and distancing yourself from all worldly concerns. However the avatar has to be heavily involved in the worlds concerns, that is the duty of the avatar. Laghimas way of thinking is actually very dangerous if it was taught to the avatar as it could potentially sway the avatar from their duty

My Team avatar would consist of myself an earth bender, i'm very rooted and down to earth, big and strong, often stubborn and hard headed yet a seismic and effective leader. My Avatar teachers/friends would consist of Fire - Ozai - A ruthlessly powerful and calculated firebender not known as a great father nor the best of friends with an insatiable thirst for power and dominance is rivaled only by his political knowledge and aggressively precise potency as a firebender. His deep knowledge and mastery of firebending combined with his natural born leadership, tactics, knowledge of culture and history and mental dominance will help me explore, understand and control the often neglected Yang side of dualism. He would instill Command, Valor, politics & fierceness in me. Water - Ming Hua - A resourcefully clever, collected, loyal and effective waterbending master who's mastery of waterdending even after loosing her arms allowed her to center herself and use waterbending in an unconventional way. Her ability to overcome what most would deem impossible due to the physical technique involved in waterbending shows her sheer will and dedication to the art. Her creativeness, determination and talents bolstered by her skill makes her the perfect water bending teacher to learn a specialized style and method of waterbending best suited for adaptability. She would instill adaptability, resourcefulness, cunning and determination in me. Earth - King Boomi - The lovable, wise, fun loving and carefree earthbending leader's unconventional methods and tactics combined with an unmatched and unyielding strength, speed, agility and vigor makes him the perfect earthbending teacher for me. His personality is alot like mines and his perspective on subjects and people are very similar to mine as well. As a leader his love of people, charisma, eccentricity, experience, wisdom and unconventional approach to problems would be a perfect contrast and balance with the cold, calculated, aggressive nature and teachings of Ozai and become the root and foundation of my Yin side of dualism. As a fighter his skills, strength, speed and deep rooted understanding of the art is second to none.. maybe Toph(debatable). I chose not to take any avatars in my team avatar since in this situation i am already the avatar, i can speak with all of them, also since you could use any of them for any element. Air: Jinora. I don't fully resonate with Tenzin, and Aang is a bit too energized and extrovert for me while Jinora is a good mix between them. She certainly takes wisdom from her dad, plus her somehwat childish (even though she is mature for her age) nature. But this was really between her and Kelsang. Water: Kirima. This was between Kirima and Katara, but i chose Kirima since overall she is a quick thinker who would challenge the group without being aggressive. She also thinks outside of the box when training Kyoshi. Earth: Toph. This was between Toph and Jianzhu. On one hand, Jianzhu would be patient and be a good diplomat, but Toph would challenge me while teaching me, besides seismic sense is amazing to have. Fire: Iroh. No contest. Not a single day i need to stress or worry when i have the world's best councillor and guru with me.
I mean he sought out the prodigy earth bender, Zuko was no prodigy, he really struggled to master fire bending he only became really good through hard work. Sokka also trained hard with what he had and grew through the series. The only one who really just fell into aangs lap (or rather fell into her lap) that just so happened to be a super talented bender is Katara

Earth: Bolin, he is naturally talented, but also a fun guy to be around. He'd make sure you were getting it before moving on.
Air: Jinora, she is very spiritually inclined, and isn't as dogmatic as her father, while still being able to teach the ancient ways quite effectively.
Water: This is a tough one... probably Eska and Desna, they are both powerful benders, and it's possible they learned spirit bending. Do have to keep an eye on them, though.
Fire: General Iroh, he is military minded, while also knowing when the rules should be bent for the greater good.

Zaheer was an expert martial artist and spiritual leader. He was very good. I'd say just a little less than a master like tenzin. But what do you expect? He only got his bending for just a few days. I'm sure he'll be a master if given more time. Not to mention he was self-taught.

Going with the flow of if I was next, which would start at Earth. Toph for ability to wait and strike with intelligent but straightforward attacks. Iroh for fire to have spirituality. Ty Lee for air and evasion and chi blocking as an alternative or addition to attacks. And finally Katara as she had difficulty learning her element at first which may give her insight which I could use if I ever struggled while learning the elements.

I think I would be born a waterbender and develop a natural flow and sense of community (like I currently have); so I feel my waterbending master could be one who is more resourceful, steadfast and manipulates nature in ways unknown to standard bending masters. That kind of talent and creativity doesn’t come around often.
The same almost applies to Toph. She also used her bending to not only fight physically, but with exceptional mental and sensory power, never seen before. And of course metal bending came out of this. People think Bumi is better; but he lived for over 100 years and never thought metal bending possible at all.
I want a balance of people who are in tune with the natural, physical and spiritual worlds so I can be taught them all in equal measure.
This is why I picked both Jinora and Iroh. Both are masters of their bending elements but have unparalleled spiritual connections compared to any other benders, with the exceptions of the Avatars themselves.
Ty Lee is self-explanatory. She is just great 😅 chi-blocking and martial arts/acrobatics, who doesn’t want that?
This combo gives a strong balance of spirituality which is clearly heavily linked to bending, masterful physical bending techniques, unique resourcefulness/creativity in practice, unmatched sensory attunement; and a swathe of advanced bending techiques (metal bending, healing, blood bending, lightning bending and redirection, astral projection and chi-blocking)

Fire - Zuko (I believe that Iroh would be too complex for me to understand and, despite Zuko barely understanding him, I believe everything he has gone through, plus his ability to make sense of what Iroh says makes him an asset that would be great for a firebending instructor.

Water: Katara because I love katara and we would be best friends because I said so. She is wildly talented, gentle but also stern, skilled at healing and she is just a great teacher in general. Even if she probably wouldn't teach me bloodbending which I REALLY want to learn.
Earth: oof this is hard but Kyoshi. Kyoshi is NOT a bloodthirsty crazy person like fanon makes her to be. She is disciplined and powerful but she wouldn't make me go wishy washy and help me make decisive endeavours.
Air: Jinora! She is connected to the spirit world, is pretty talented and has experience of mentioning airbenders. I also just really like her chill vibes.
Earth: King Bumi, a literal mad genius and one of the most powerful earth bender in the franchise
Air: Monk Gyatso, a great fatherly figure and would always instill hope into your heart (a super powerful air bender)

I can see the avatar being manipulated by him and will need the help of his other masters to see the truth. I chose Sozin because he is ambitious as shown when he tried to take over the world, and when that ambition is translated into something positive, he would be a great mentor as he would always believe that I had more growth in fire bending. He also is has a complex understanding of firebending, being proficient enough to harness power from a comet.
Air: Monk Gyatso (The Free-Thinker)
Gyatso would be a great air bending master since he is not only considered one of the best masters of all time (the best around the time he was Aang’s guardian) and he shows prowess in air bending since he could take out a whole room of boosted soldiers without touching them. He would also be a great spiritual guide, and fill the same role as Iroh does with endless wisdom yet still fun loving.
Water: Hama (The Witch)
Although she is insane in the show, given that she doesn’t care about revenge on the fire nation anymore and is serving me as a water bending master, not only does she have strong bending technique, but Hama is the most creative water bender on the show and given that water is the element of change, learning with someone who had the natural ingenuity to pull water from air and plants and manipulate water in living people would allow me to further push the boundaries of what water bending can do. Also, as avatar I would rather know how to blood bend and never use it once then to have to deal with someone like Yacone while powerless unless I’m in the Avatar state. Hama was also very caring toward Katara in the first stages of her training and considering that her sole priority is to teach me, if she were to snap on me it wouldn’t be so severe especially since she is passionate about passing on Southern style water bending
Earth: Ghazan (The Rogue)
I chose Ghazan for earth because as a member of the Red Lotus (former in this circumstance) not only would I be able to deal with the Red Lotus preemptively, I would also most likely learn new or forgotten bending styles. Ghazan is also the most masterful non-avatar lava bender and since the avatar in canon can bend lava, having him teaching me to do it would allow me to become extremely proficient. He is also shown to be down to earth when he is in the back of the vehicle talking to Bolin which would be nice when I can’t handle the stress from Sozin and Hama or the aloof wisdom from Gyatso
A common theme between all of my masters is that they think outside of the box or bend in unique ways (Sozin harnessing the comet, Gyatso’s room vacuum, Hama blood bending, Ghazan lava bending)
Air: Gyatso- Master Airbender who predominantly taught Ang to become a master of airbending at a very young age. Many years of experience and has taught two generations of avatars (Roku and Ang) so he has the most experience with traditional yet creative forms of airbending which is necessary to become a master, very skilled at pysho as well so I would like to see Iroh vs Gyatso in a pysho match, also being an elder monk he must be familiar with the teachings of Guru Laghima and his mastery of airbending
Water: Katara- caring attitude, cool nerves, master healer, master water bender, can manipulate blood, ice, and water, and her arguments with Toph would be funny
Earth: Toph- seismic sense, metal bending, tough teacher for a tough element, and allows me to enjoy myself occasionally and is friendly if you are on her good side. Quoted by King Bumi "You must find a teacher that listens to the Earth" Toph is the master at sensing what is around her before attacking which makes her so versatile
Fire: Iroh- lightning redirection, philosophy, pysho skills, master firebender, teaches the original form of fire bending through passion and not aggression, and makes a mean Jasmine tea

For me I would choose Toph as an earth bending master not only because she uses earth bending but thinks of earth bending in a different way than most earth benders do. She uses earth bending to see, listen and feel, and thru that I think is why she learned she could metal bend. As far as air bending I think Tenzin would have been the perfect choice because his only leadership of air bending was from his father and that's only a generation. There is a saying,"to be a good leader you have to be a good follower", and I think that is perfect in his case because if you want to change a method of education on anything you have to go thru YOUR method of education in order to figure out what works best or not.

Katara because she is a very powerful waterbender and would teach me to be a skillful and talented waterbender maybe even one of the most powerful and she'd be compassionate and she has had experience with 2 Avatars so she would be really really good at knowing what to do when everything is wrong and she would teach me to be a light to the world. I also think we would connect well and be good friends. She could also teach me healing and it'll be really useful. Moon Spirit because they are the original waterbender.
Gyatso because he is a great aorbender and he will teach me important lessons that will help me with the whole Avatar thing.
Kyoshi because she was a really good earthbending and she could also teach me hand to hand combat with fans and swords and she could lend me wisdom about being the Avatar and it will be insightful. Suyin because she's really good and she would teach me to be a great metalbender and even better earthbender.
Iroh because he's wise and will really be my console and he'd really help me out and I could lean on him when things are bad. He could also teach me lightningbending and lightning redirection which would be cool. Dragons because they are the original masters and they would teach me how to be a really good firebender and what being a firebender means.

*Water - Master Pakku* | I would love someone on my team to be someone strict! So that I would still see the “traditional” aspects of bending! Cause as we see in LoK bending has this “modern” touch! I could stay on my roots
*Air - Jinora* | We all know that air bending is spiritually inclined! And that Jinora is one of the most spiritual character in the franchise! Hence I want her not just to train me in air bending but also spiritually as an Avatar!
*Earth - Lin Beifong* | someone that is though with me! Not like traditionally strict but reckless though! You know what I mean! You might say might as well go with Toph! I already have Master Pakku with me (trains me traditionally) so better to have someone who can train me in “modern/alternative” bending!

I'm going to change the parameters of the game a little and assume, that if I were the next avatar my masters would have to be among characters are who are still alive by the end of korra:
Fire: General Iroh the 2nd - I really liked this character and what we've seen of him, he's a dynamic fighter capable of adapting to different situations (like he fought well against Amon's airplanes despite it being the first time that invention had ever been revealed) + I feel like he would have a lot of distilled knowledge and wisdom from Izumi, Zuko, and Iroh (the 1st)
Air: Jinora - The easiest pick for me. Tenzin is too hard of a teacher while Zaheer is to much of ideologue. Not to mention the element of Air is usually regarded as the most spiritually charged element so Jinora would be a great teacher for that side of the element. Kai as a master would also be a good pick, as I feel like he represents the freedom of the element really well.
Water: Kya - I'm working under the assumption that Katara would have probably passed away by the time of the next avatar after Korra. Most of the avatars have focused on the combat elements of water while neglecting the healing elements and Kya is known to be one of the best healers in the world. Additionally she's capable enough to teach combat as well.
Earth: I really like Suyin (and honestly she's probably the 2nd most impressive earth bender in LoK after Toph herself) but Kya and Jinora are already considered pretty free-spirited so for Earth I would opt for some more rigid to give my team avatar some necessary structure: the backbone of the group. For Earth that would have to be Kuvira. Despite being misguided, Kuvira's intentions weren't evil in my opinion and if she's reformed by the time of the next avatar, she would be a great person to teach the most stubborn of the elements
Earth: Ghazan for lava bending
Water: Yakone for bloodbending
Air: Guru or Zaheer
Fire: Ph'li for combustion bending

I'd have instructors who are intelligent, skilled fighters knowledgeable in advanced bending and non bending combat techniques, savvy and connected political operators, spiritual guides who are compassionate, wise and fun and all my instructors would be of different ages, genders, would come from privileged and non privileged backgrounds alike and would similarly be benders and non benders alike as well so I'd have a very diverse range of views, opinions and experiences to draw from to help me become as balanced and capable an avatar as I feel I could possibly be.

I grew up with a twin brother who had always struggeled with physical tasks (walking,swimming,...) which is the reason I became very creative and quite good at teaching me things myself and in that regard MOnk Gyatso seems like the obvios choice,

My favourite element! There are many great water beanding masters but the reasons I chose katara are the many sub bending styles she knows. Plant bending in particular is something I'd like to master. I grow a lot of my own food, am trying to create knew varieties of vegetables and can identify most of the plants native to my country. Also healing is an immensely underrated skill amongst avatars.

Story:
So I start my life at the air temples living a live simular to aang with the biggest diffrence being that I don't get told I'm the Avatar until my 16th Birthday. Then I start my journey as the avatar, my first destination being the southern water tribe. I spend 2 years there being thought by an elderly Katara (50-60) perfecting my water bending. Whilst I'm there I meet a young Tonraq who has just been banned grom the northern water tribe after destroying the woods around the spirit world portals. We fall in love but need to keep it a secret to the rest of the tribe due to their conservative believes. He doesn't talk much about his past until one day Unalaq shows up and forces me to open the portal and we fight in the spirit world. In LOK Unalaq is a powerfull earthbender but in this version he is less expirienced so he is not a big challange to me. After defeating him me and Tonraq sail to the earth kingdom looking for an earth bending master.

Air: Zaheer- I want to learn to fly. Also Zaheer is all about adaptation. He's someone who'd help me add airbending to my natural fighting style. He's also incredibly spiritual and all about balance.
Water: Amon- I was going to say Paku, but he's too old guard at the end of the day. Amon would keep me honest and probably remind me of the non-benders, even if he had his own motives for his revolution.
Earth: Bumi- Steadfast in his ways, and someone who knows how to find pleasure in boring situations in order to drive home the importance of patience.

Everyone loves Iroh, no explanation needed.
For Unalaq it's the unique control he has, plus his connection to the spirits, though hopefully that radical nature is toned down since he'd see spirits are in the world now. Oh and politics.
For airbending I'd love to learn spirit projection, and well currently she's the only option. Plus I just feel her style would fit me better than any other master airbender.
Lastly Suyin provides support when needed, and is a very free form of earthbending which I feel I'd benefit from. Oh and politics from a different perspective.

water: katara she is kind and has knowledge of most things you need to know she is just a good allround waterbender

On your point of Katara being a prodigy, if you are an empathic person who is open to learn and your around a prodigy like Aang, oddly enough, what happens is that they rub off on you. You also have to take into account that they’re always fighting. That means they’re always applying. A freethinking mind comes up with things on the fly. Katara had no choice but to become a prodigy, unlike Toph. 👦🏾
I agree with your choices except how Aang was surrounded by Prodigies, I think they all progressed through the series and learned the best because they didn’t have traditional teachers. We should chat about it.

Earth is the hardest pick. But I knows the political game and has great strengths, but doesn't do the advanced subdisciplines. And it would feel weird having two old dudes and two young women. Suyin was my first pick, but I'm starting to think maybe Old Toph, for a tough love approach?
I love this concept and I wish I had a page and good editors so I could do one as well I feel you all missed a key point in your choices but history has shown that bad guys think outside of the box with their skill set so the masters I feel would be best are all bad guys 1 because it's a way of thinking that good guys never contemplate and 2 you can always still learn the proper basics and bending techniques from other masters and incorporate all you've learned. Imagine being the avatar and knowing combustion bending or psychic blood bending not because of what they could do but because if you have that much control over the rare techniques imagine how powerful your normal techniques will have to be. Zaheers method of air bending is like no other he even learned to fly. Now having a lava bender teach you and then traveling to learn from Tophs daughter... who's seriously stopping that avatar

I disagree with Laghima as the airbending teacher. His way of thinking directly clashes with what the Avatars way of thinking should be. His way of thinking was ridding yourself of all earthly attachments and distancing yourself from all worldly concerns. However the avatar has to be heavily involved in the worlds concerns, that is the duty of the avatar. Laghimas way of thinking is actually very dangerous if it was taught to the avatar as it could potentially sway the avatar from their duty

Air - Zaheer - An extremely skilled martial artists and airbender embodies the kind hearted rebel in all of us. Though an anarchist in every sense of the word, his philosophies and beliefs are rooted in progress, compassion, love and spirit. I chose not to take any avatars in my team avatar since in this situation i am already the avatar, i can speak with all of them, also since you could use any of them for any element.
Air: Jinora. I don't fully resonate with Tenzin, and Aang is a bit too energized and extrovert for me while Jinora is a good mix between them. She certainly takes wisdom from her dad, plus her somehwat childish (even though she is mature for her age) nature. But this was really between her and Kelsang.
Water: Kirima. This was between Kirima and Katara, but i chose Kirima since overall she is a quick thinker who would challenge the group without being aggressive. She also thinks outside of the box when training Kyoshi.
Earth: Toph. This was between Toph and Jianzhu. On one hand, Jianzhu would be patient and be a good diplomat, but Toph would challenge me while teaching me, besides seismic sense is amazing to have.
Fire: Iroh. No contest. Not a single day i need to stress or worry when i have the world's best councillor and guru with me.
