cool i'm glad got new on the information on the fire nation Avatar before Roku most avatars always thought of mastering 4 elements and bringing balance to the world, after hearing his story i see that used his head as a weapon and rose to the top in order to save his people.
Having just read this specific chapter yesterday/last night, I immediately became interested in Avatar Szeto. The backstory he was given was very different to the backstories of the Avatars we know which helped him stand out in my mind. And now I wouldn't mind getting a book or two with Szeto as the main character.
Great analysis 👌🏾 This avatar did what was needed at the time. It happened to directly benefit the fire Nation but by doing so it kept chaos from spreading into the other nations.
I just read this book and it actually never said that he didn't travel at all nor he only served the Fire Nation exclusively. It just said he worked as politician in the Fire Nation. And that his achievements within the Fire Nation was due to his political work.
I’m curious, could you look into more into the waterbending female avatar, she has a head piece and looks like a princess. She seems like she has an interesting back story. Great content 👍
We don’t know much about her, but she definitely seems like she loves beaches and seashells. Someone on Instagram made fan art of the last avatars based on their statues and spirits.
ahhh this actually puts forth a bit more context to one of sozins' and roku's conversations in 'the avatar and the firelord'!! i forget in exactly _which_ flashback this was said, but sozin told ruku something along the lines of 'your loyalty is to the fire nation, anything less makes you a traitor.' at the time, i thought that was just sozin being sozin, but now looking back, maybe it was the way the general fire nation population thought too given szeto's approach; it would further explain how/why it was easy for roku's descendants just to blend in as commoners, bc his avatar legacy probably didnt do them any favors.
*HOWEVER* Avatar Szeto isn't always rose and sunshine like Yangchen. He may be the guy praise for creating the Fire Clans into a unified Fire Nation and made the Fire Nation's economy progress so rapidly, but in a way he also the guy who responsible to create the Imperial Fire Nation. He was so Fire Nation centric, that his efficient excellent way of governing is not being shared by other nations that lead to imbalance, and made the Fire Nation so powerful that for the first time in history there's a nation that surpasses the Earth Kingdom(s). And made the Fire Nation arrogant enough to think of "sharing their prosperity to the rest of the world". In short, while the immediate short term of Avatar Szeto's actions and decisions has been very good, that is, appeasing the dark spirits, unified the Fire islands, and made the Fire Nation a developed nation. But his long term consequences for not sharing that with other nations have made the Fire Nation became arrogant and created ambitious power hungry Fire Lord Sozin, and his predecessor, which is Roku and Aang have to pay a very steep price for Szeto's lack of balance focus for other nations. Other nations need the Avatar too, you know! Not just Fire Nation! So, yeah, Avatar Szeto, also a flawed one. Not that all roses and sunshine.
His actions were good, however like all things his gifts to his country were warped beating intention. Stating such as a personal character flaw isn't really accurate.
@@r.r815 No, his character was just fine. I'm not villify Szeto himself, but rather the fans who think his legacy didn't turn up to be corrupted. Like Kyoshi, whose intention is good when she created the Dai Li, so does Szeto's when he enabled the Fire Nation to be the first developed nation. However, just like the Dai Li turns up to be horrible, so does the Fire Nation's prosperity. Edit: Come to think again, Szeto isn't that good of an Avatar, because he didn't have enough balance of sharing equal attentions to all nations. And this very action led to the Fire Nation becoming an Imperial Fire Nation in the future, and put his successors (Roku and Aang) in a very difficult situation, even to the point where the Avatar cycle is almost permanently end. So yes, his character may not be flawed, but his role as the Avatar is flawed and imbalance, preferring to concentrate on 1 nation over the others. In short, I'm not a big fan of Szeto. He indirectly created the Imperial Fire Nation, and indirectly responsible to almost ending the Avatar cycle.
@@SerGio-mw9pc the fir nation before szeto wasn't a good place so he saw to fix it, yes he should have done his duty to the whole world but pinning what happens later isn't fair as it's impossible for him to have the foresight of what would happen once he was gone.
@@r.r815 Well, I don't entirely blame Avatar Szeto for everything that has happened to the Fire Nation during Avatar Roku and Aang's time. Sozin is definitely the most responsible guy for starting the bloody fiery war, but that didn't mean Sozin is the only responsible guy. It appears that Avatar Szeto also play/provide some role on throwing the Fire Nation into an arrogant nation. If only his governing principles being shared equally with the rest of the world, the Fire Lord, hence the Fire Nation as a whole, would never ever even attempt to have the thought of "sharing their prosperity to the rest of the world" by their own way. So yeah, he did guilty for making Roku and especially Aang suffer, although not the primary convict.

the avatar must maintain balance, that’s always been their job, as Iroh said the 4 nations are 4 parts of the same whole. Szeto was wise to make sure the fire nation was in balance first
Sometimes, focusing your talents offers more benefit to others than distributing your talents to a variety of interests. It's entirely possible to spread yourself so thin that your efforts are too shallow to notice.
The fact that he was so loyal in restoring the Fire Nation is actually really cool. Since that gives a reason for Sozin to believe Roku would side with him for his plans for the world, because the last Avatar would have helped the Fire Nation over keeping balance.
I would love to see the Avatar one or two generations later from Korra. By then it would be closer to our world where technology rules and there is certain 'pacts' like our UN has which would never really allow countries to just go to war or use weapons of mass destruction against each other without heavy consequences. Plus the new technology could also mean that the Avatar could be replaced both physically and even spiritually where normal humans can interact with spirits directly. I also said maybe 2 generations afterwards cause I do wanna see another Fire Bending Avatar as the Fire Nation seems to be the most technologically advanced among all and it would be interesting to see this Avatar's upbringing and journey. Plus I love Fire...
Reminds me when Sozin said to Roku that they had one of the most successful empires, and they should expand it and share their plenty with the rest of the world.
Damn this is interesting. My thing id like to contribute is that this is semingly in direct contrast to Avatar Roku, who did not serve "his firelord". We see Sozin clearly upset that Roku is not taking instruction here and that they do not meet regularly in their adult life despite their childhood friendship. Its possible that Sozin is influenced by the closeness of the previous firelord as afterall hed surely look up the last time a fire avatar was around.
@@AntoineBandele Oh absolutely, he almost certainly was not popular elsewhere. I can imagine that when he did discuss matters in other countries though, despite his fire nation dominant background he would be able to provide some ingenious solutions as he has a perspectiv of someone who has worked their way up, as you descrobed before, and perhaps in his later life his influence spread to even the earth kingdoms. I may wish to read the passages myself for clarity though
@ron Just to be extra clear, Korra is not o blame for losing her past lives. Everything else you said in your comment was an action but this is an exception and is kinda a weird way to describe it
Maybe he's the reason Sozin told Roku that his loyalty was to their nation first. Anything less made Roku a traitor. Maybe Sozin was thinking about Szeto when he said these words to Roku, he probably read about him.
In my opinion the fire nation is so advanced thanks to szeto, and I think that firelord sozin knew about szeto and he wanted roku to help the fire nation like szeto did
It is great how he decided to focus on the Fire Nation as it might have been hard for him to do this as it is doing something different to the other Avatars but shows how different Avatars are open to change.
Fun fact! I’m kinda related to him lol. My last name is a version of Szeto and part of my family still spells it that way. Now I can finally determine that I am actually a fire bender.
It’s also interesting how the fire nation avatar before roku might have influenced the show. What if Sozin after saying goodbye to Roku researched the avatar and found the records about this guy who almost exclusively helped the fire nation and served under the fire lord and that he helped his ancestor bring the fire nation back from the brink of collapse. This would explain why Sozin felt like it was Roku’s job as the fire nation avatar to serve him and his territorial ambitions. And it might also be the reason why Sozin hid the history of the fire nation. Because if you’re trying to portray the avatar as state enemy number 1, it’s not ideal that the history books mention that time the fire nation almost collapsed due to poor administration by his family and was saved by the avatar
I feel like because of this Avatar, Sozin felt betrayed when Roku didn't want to help him 'share the wealth of the Fire Nation', of course them being close friends probably helped hurt him too but still.
It’s something of a double edge sword. Great that he focused and did so much for the fire nation, but because of how much he did, he set a precedent that Sozin exploits later, (the success of the nation and when he told Roku that he was a citizen of the fire nation and his loyalties should first be to the nation). But still, an awesome dude.
@RJ you are, of course, entitled to your opinion. Love the discussion. Like I said, still an awesome dude. I just felt that his good deeds (for the fire nation) we later exploited. I never discredited anything he did.
Avatar Szeto decision to stay home and help unify his nation was good and bad. It was good because how could he have travelled the world bringing peace if his own nation was in shambles that would have been a problem. It was bad because his role as the avatar was to bring balance and peace throughout the entire world so i don't think the folks at his time were too happy about that no wonder yangchen dealt with humans only because the were so neglected by the last avatar she had to even go beyond her monk ways in order to bring about peace in the world
As usual, awesome video! I loved how you discussed Szeto's natural progression through Fire Nation society. I hadn't really thought about it before, but as you pointed out, characters in Avatar become advanced in new skills super fast such as Katara with waterbending, so it's nice seeing a character as powerful as the Avatar having to take things at a normal rate. I also finally finished Shadow of Kyoshi last week and I absolutely agree with you that the book does an awesome job expanding on some of the Avatars. It's so fascinating seeing all the unique takes they had to Avatarhood and Szeto's is especially interesting with him staying in politics. I'm now curious to know how his choices, in turn, impacted Yangchen's world. Finally, I love the music you chose for this video. It's so relaxing. 😀
Me too. I'm honestly really scared I might get pigeon-holed into Avatar. I really need to start incorporating other franchises soon to make it clear I don't do Avatar-only.

Whichever one gets votes you can make a couple of videos on it before moving to another by doing another poll. If you want ofcourse..
[Minor spoilers for Shadow of Kyoshi] It seems that Kyoshi really adopted Szeto's idea of ruling, especially in her later life. After Firelord Zoryu became a prominent political figure, he wanted to advance the Fire Nation's control over itself by dispersing the clans. Everything else that we know about Kyoshi after the end of Shadow of Kyoshi pertains to her actions in the Earth Kingdom. Therefore, she allowed Zoryu and his successors to eventually build a dictatorship such as Sozin's. If Kyoshi had not adopted the idea of dealing solely in domestic affairs, then she may have been able to stop Zoryu and his plans. This is one of the problems that Roku inherits. Another problem could be the unrest among the spirits as I didn't feel we had a real conclusion to that.
I need to get me The Shadow of Kiyoshi. Szeto had so little mention and so little information that I was a bit bummed out. He was shown as one of the first Lava Benders in the flashbacks of ATLA. I love how they made every single Avatar was different from another and not just a complete carbon copy of the one before.
Avatar Szeto is the kind of Avatar that characters like Tanya Degurechaff and Souma Kazuya would have loved working with due to a combination of both efficiency and hard work ethic.
At this point, the Fire Nation was clearly in the worst shape, and so he focused most of his efforts there. He did not neglect(maybe to a certain extent, but not straight up abandonment) the other nations, however, and helped whenever it was necessary
Antoine Bandele yeah I’m a sucker for lore like it’s my fav thing in stories and my god reading this book I had to take breaks so I didn’t get to hyped about all the lore it had
I feel like his story makes sence for why he stuck by the fire nation. Every Avaatr is differnt and they all try fix the problems they're faced. He's a likeable Avatar not because he is but the human side of him is a strong character. This is why we need more content on the old Avatars.

I think it's definitely unique. szeto definitely continues the trend of avatars being flawed people with good intentions for the world. It's also definitely interesting that as Szeto fixed the fire nation, his actions probably lead to break down of affairs in the other 3 major nations... ehem... two other nations and what kind of avatar did we get after him? the Universal diplomat.. who caused the corruption of several spirits.. to be cleaned up by the best and most selfless hunter in the world.. who again left the world in shambles too soon to be patched up by probably one of the best avatar ever..I can't keep the trend up anymore but for a time it felt like the avatar spirit knew exactly what the world needs and reincarnates into the person who possesses the qualities needed to maintain world balance.

I'd love to see the next avatar series be an anthology series of various snippets of previous Avatars lives. Imagine the next avatar trying to reconnect with their past lives since the connection was lost in Korra's time and each episode focusing on a different avatar they reconnect with. Kind of similar to how Aang reconnects with Yangchen after his connection was severed in the ATLA comics!
To find out why he made that decision because it has to have something to do with the male earth Avatar what he did in his life that made him chose to stay in the fire nation an help his country out instead of bringing peace to every nation before him

Yet, the bad unforseen consequences of his actions were that with his stability and focusing on the fire nation he layed the path for Ozai and the Hundred Years War, he basically feed the Fire Nation until they became a jugernaut of conquest later down the line.

cool i'm glad got new on the information on the fire nation Avatar before Roku most avatars always thought of mastering 4 elements and bringing balance to the world, after hearing his story i see that used his head as a weapon and rose to the top in order to save his people.
Having just read this specific chapter yesterday/last night, I immediately became interested in Avatar Szeto. The backstory he was given was very different to the backstories of the Avatars we know which helped him stand out in my mind. And now I wouldn't mind getting a book or two with Szeto as the main character.
Great analysis 👌🏾
This avatar did what was needed at the time. It happened to directly benefit the fire Nation but by doing so it kept chaos from spreading into the other nations.

We don’t know much about her, but she definitely seems like she loves beaches and seashells. Someone on Instagram made fan art of the last avatars based on their statues and spirits.
@@deViianceTV wow, can you tell me were I can find that on instagram ? Please
ahhh this actually puts forth a bit more context to one of sozins' and roku's conversations in 'the avatar and the firelord'!! i forget in exactly _which_ flashback this was said, but sozin told ruku something along the lines of 'your loyalty is to the fire nation, anything less makes you a traitor.'
at the time, i thought that was just sozin being sozin, but now looking back, maybe it was the way the general fire nation population thought too given szeto's approach; it would further explain how/why it was easy for roku's descendants just to blend in as commoners, bc his avatar legacy probably didnt do them any favors.
I'm sure Ozai would have tried to destroy the legacy of Avatar Szeto with reinvention of history.
He sounds cool asf! I love Avatar lore so much, the world building and lore is unmatched!
Edit:
Come to think again, Szeto isn't that good of an Avatar, because he didn't have enough balance of sharing equal attentions to all nations.
@@SerGio-mw9pc so what your argument is pointless. It's like saying oh no the guy who invented created the concept of trades routes is responsible for the slave trade.

Hello,I found your comment.
Hi
Hi, hope you're doing well too!
I think it's cool to have a focused Avatar, seems like he even maintained a spiritual balance too; solid guy.
1:53 so no one is going to talk about how huge those waterbending avatars are before kuruk😂
They're big guys in general.
Ellie Fuller true
And I’m sure not everyone was happy with Szeto. Bet there was some neglect in Earth Kingdom that people weren’t happy about.
Everything else you said in your comment was an action but this is an exception and is kinda a weird way to describe it
Imagine if there was an avatar who was also Firelord, or an avatar who was Earth king, there’s so much possibilities🤯🤯
I cat stop hearing "Avatar Szeto" as "Avatarcito" which is like tiny avatar, damn

I’m am happy because this is one of the only videos that talks about szeto backstory
I don’t know how I’m just now discovering your channel- subscribed!
Maybe he's the reason Sozin told Roku that his loyalty was to their nation first. Anything less made Roku a traitor. Maybe Sozin was thinking about Szeto when he said these words to Roku, he probably read about him.
In my opinion the fire nation is so advanced thanks to szeto, and I think that firelord sozin knew about szeto and he wanted roku to help the fire nation like szeto did
*im just staring at his shirt potterheads?*
It is great how he decided to focus on the Fire Nation as it might have been hard for him to do this as it is doing something different to the other Avatars but shows how different Avatars are open to change.
I just saw your karuk video and got interested in this one too. Super interesting, keep up the great work!
I’m still going to call him avatar Jafar
He's most known by that name.
And he's antagonist is called Aladin
Fun fact! I’m kinda related to him lol. My last name is a version of Szeto and part of my family still spells it that way. Now I can finally determine that I am actually a fire bender.
Same lmao!
No one is gonna notice the chubby ari nomad avatar in the “avatar pyramid”background
I would love if they gave us the stories of more old avatars and one day they may evem turn it into an animated series.
If he ever needs to bring down a big villain like Ozai or Amon, he should sing _You're Only Second Rate_ while fighting them.

Avatar Szeto decision to stay home and help unify his nation was good and bad. It was good because how could he have travelled the world bringing peace if his own nation was in shambles that would have been a problem. It was bad because his role as the avatar was to bring balance and peace throughout the entire world so i don't think the folks at his time were too happy about that no wonder yangchen dealt with humans only because the were so neglected by the last avatar she had to even go beyond her monk ways in order to bring about peace in the world
I like how u edited the light and contrast or whatever in this video. I think it looks really cool
Yeah, I just started closing the blinds behind me for better separation.
Tbf Yangchen spent most of her years being more of a peaceful negotiator as well
But she always sided with humans so something dark happened in Kuruk's era
This is a really good video, I didn't know much about "Avatar Jafar." 😆
Also I like your shirt pattern. 👍
Had to hit it with the nice Japanese tunes for this one for sure.

[Minor spoilers for Shadow of Kyoshi]
It seems that Kyoshi really adopted Szeto's idea of ruling, especially in her later life.
@Zion Lamar I didn't say Roku wasn't good at foreign affairs, just that he inherited the problem.
I would like to hear about the second avatar and their life experiences and how wan could maybe guide since the avatar was still relatively new
I think that the second Avatar’s name would be Avatar Dua
KoolDudeGamer third one is avatar Tri
Avatar Szeto is the kind of Avatar that characters like Tanya Degurechaff and Souma Kazuya would have loved working with due to a combination of both efficiency and hard work ethic.
I think he shouldve spread out more to the other nations because its still the avatars job to keep the peace everywhere
At this point, the Fire Nation was clearly in the worst shape, and so he focused most of his efforts there. He did not neglect(maybe to a certain extent, but not straight up abandonment) the other nations, however, and helped whenever it was necessary

To find out why he made that decision because it has to have something to do with the male earth Avatar what he did in his life that made him chose to stay in the fire nation an help his country out instead of bringing peace to every nation before him
Has anyone ever wondered why the avatars after the row with Kuruk and Yangchen are not in order? Based on their clothing the avatar behind Kuruk would be of fire nation descent, and the two air nation avatars in that row are only separated by an earth and fire nation avatar.
The cycle is air, water, earth, fire
Yangchen air, Kuruk water, Kyoshi earth, Roku fire, Aang air, Korra water.
Szeto is probably the Avatar who created the Fire Nation that became so successful and delusional
