What if sozin expected roku to be totally loyal to his conquest cause of how szeto acted? He might have gotten the impression all fire bender avatars were fire nation centric.
Well there’s also the fact that Kyoshi lived for 200+ years as someone willing to take out anyone- even royalty - who disobeyed the law. So having the new Avatar be his bff, Sozin probably thought he’d get some leeway and maybe sympathy for the royal family’s ambition
@@benwasserman8223 since kyoshi lived for so much time, the popular idea that a fire avatar is loyal to the fire nation must probably be created because the fire avatar prior to szeto lived 600 years ago, and szeto was really infuential
I'm so glad we finally got a name for this guy! For years I'm been curious to know his name and what his story is, since he shows up so much in the Avatar line-up. In my Legend of Korra fan-fiction, I had even given him a name and backstory, which coincidentally was also revealed during a festival in the Fire Nation. The backstory I came up with for him was a little different though. In my story, he was called Avatar Han-Jin, and was a Fire Sage who was known for being a bit of an eccentric.
This is like Japan's history. Before Avatar Szeto, there is war and conflict within the Fire Nation which resembles the feudal Japan (primarily the Azuchi-Momoyama period between 1568-1600) and with Szeto's help, the Fire Nation usher in peace and stability which resembles the Edo period (1600-1868) in Japan. Then everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked which led into the Meiji Era (1868) and continue all the way through the Showa period during WW2.
I just love how diverse the Avatars are and how different their goals and things were. I hope they dive deeper into other past Avatars like "Gimli" and that really cool woman Waterbender Avatar, they could really just do this forever!!
My god, I never realized the amount of detail in the shot from 9:22. Counting Aang as a row, you can still get an insane amount of detail at six rows back!
Zseto is Ying and Yang incarnated, in his actions. He focused on the fire nation because he was needed the most there. He made welfare programs and helped the nation to thrive once again. That is the good part. Yet, the bad unforseen consequences of his actions were that with his stability and focusing on the fire nation he layed the path for Ozai and the Hundred Years War, he basically feed the Fire Nation until they became a jugernaut of conquest later down the line.
Great analysis 👌🏾 This avatar did what was needed at the time. It happened to directly benefit the fire Nation but by doing so it kept chaos from spreading into the other nations.
Wan is Avatar Aladdin all right. His character is just a recurring cunning, banished and lightbearer Lucifer/Satan figure used across media such as Aladdin, Flynn Rider, Maui, Guy from Croods etc.
Love that we’re learning more about the Avatar universe like the different fire clans in the Fire Nation. Hope we learn more about the history of other nations as we get to know more past Avatars

Mhm, I think the royal family already has an Avatar in their bloodline. Iroh mentioned to Zuko that one of his grandfathers was Sozin, the other Avatar Roku. I might be wrong though, it's been a while since I last rewatched Atla.
Point Seven No you are right, I watched avatar so many times and he did tell Zuko that his great grandfather is Avatar Roku on his mom side of the family

Having just read this specific chapter yesterday/last night, I immediately became interested in Avatar Szeto. The backstory he was given was very different to the backstories of the Avatars we know which helped him stand out in my mind. And now I wouldn't mind getting a book or two with Szeto as the main character.
I love learning about the previous Avatars. They all played a role one way or another outside their Avatar status, like the sage/business/prince(ss), noble, government, etc. If that makes sense. Like some just stayed concentrated to their home nation. Also another amusing thing, that music you played at 00:18, I listened to that music most of the time I was reading the Kyoshi books 😂😂 Keep up the awesome work!

I just realized this (me being a history buff), noticed something familiar whilst looking at the illustrations around 2:25 that the Fire Nations peoples clothing and patterns are based on Ainu clothing and patterns, the Ainu being the Indigenous peoples of the Isle of Japan, its amazing once you see these intricately added minuscule details which make the Avatar one of the greatest series of all time.
omg we finally got some info abt avatar szeto!! hopefully we can get some info abt avatar salai as well bcs he was apaprently one of the greatest avatars in history
I wish they would make a series where it tells an avatar's story in one episode, like in ATLA the avatar and the firelord episode, and have some 2 parts for some avatars like they had in Korra with Beginnings.
Why would you want just 2 episodes? They could easily make entire series out of their backstories. Kyoshi might even be 2 season, lol. But one season per Avatar would be way more epic, and would make a lot more sense then one or two episodes.
@@LuckyOwI777 Because this way they can go through EVERY avatar in one series without having a ton of seasons. That way it wouldn't be cancelled before getting through every avatar.
It makes you wonder how many of the past Avatar were leaders, politician, philosophers, warriors, and General of their Nation. In order to get the world the way it is for Szeto all the way to Korra.
ahhh this actually puts forth a bit more context to one of sozins' and roku's conversations in 'the avatar and the firelord'!! i forget in exactly _which_ flashback this was said, but sozin told ruku something along the lines of 'your loyalty is to the fire nation, anything less makes you a traitor.' at the time, i thought that was just sozin being sozin, but now looking back, maybe it was the way the general fire nation population thought too given szeto's approach; it would further explain how/why it was easy for roku's descendants just to blend in as commoners, bc his avatar legacy probably didnt do them any favors.
Me too. I'm honestly really scared I might get pigeon-holed into Avatar. I really need to start incorporating other franchises soon to make it clear I don't do Avatar-only.

We don’t know much about her, but she definitely seems like she loves beaches and seashells. Someone on Instagram made fan art of the last avatars based on their statues and spirits.
Szeto is one of the best underestimated Avatar so far as we don't know about other avatar. I think he can bend all the elements as you don't say he can't. It good we get an avatar that just look after one nation. I hope we get an avatar that has a disability like they deaf or is wheelchair user, or has no arms. Something like that anyway great video on avatar Szeto.
I have watch a few of your videos but this one really caught my eye and I realized I have to subscribe to this channel now, great content and analysis! Sincerely, your newest subscriber!
the avatar must maintain balance, that’s always been their job, as Iroh said the 4 nations are 4 parts of the same whole. Szeto was wise to make sure the fire nation was in balance first
I love that you say “be water my friends” at the end of videos cause I live by that. Everything comes in waves, good or bad, we just gotta ride them out
*HOWEVER* Avatar Szeto isn't always rose and sunshine like Yangchen. He may be the guy praise for creating the Fire Clans into a unified Fire Nation and made the Fire Nation's economy progress so rapidly, but in a way he also the guy who responsible to create the Imperial Fire Nation. He was so Fire Nation centric, that his efficient excellent way of governing is not being shared by other nations that lead to imbalance, and made the Fire Nation so powerful that for the first time in history there's a nation that surpasses the Earth Kingdom(s). And made the Fire Nation arrogant enough to think of "sharing their prosperity to the rest of the world". In short, while the immediate short term of Avatar Szeto's actions and decisions has been very good, that is, appeasing the dark spirits, unified the Fire islands, and made the Fire Nation a developed nation. But his long term consequences for not sharing that with other nations have made the Fire Nation became arrogant and created ambitious power hungry Fire Lord Sozin, and his predecessor, which is Roku and Aang have to pay a very steep price for Szeto's lack of balance focus for other nations. Other nations need the Avatar too, you know! Not just Fire Nation! So, yeah, Avatar Szeto, also a flawed one. Not that all roses and sunshine.
His actions were good, however like all things his gifts to his country were warped beating intention. Stating such as a personal character flaw isn't really accurate.
@@r.r815 No, his character was just fine. I'm not villify Szeto himself, but rather the fans who think his legacy didn't turn up to be corrupted. Like Kyoshi, whose intention is good when she created the Dai Li, so does Szeto's when he enabled the Fire Nation to be the first developed nation. However, just like the Dai Li turns up to be horrible, so does the Fire Nation's prosperity. Edit: Come to think again, Szeto isn't that good of an Avatar, because he didn't have enough balance of sharing equal attentions to all nations. And this very action led to the Fire Nation becoming an Imperial Fire Nation in the future, and put his successors (Roku and Aang) in a very difficult situation, even to the point where the Avatar cycle is almost permanently end. So yes, his character may not be flawed, but his role as the Avatar is flawed and imbalance, preferring to concentrate on 1 nation over the others. In short, I'm not a big fan of Szeto. He indirectly created the Imperial Fire Nation, and indirectly responsible to almost ending the Avatar cycle.
@@SerGio-mw9pc the fir nation before szeto wasn't a good place so he saw to fix it, yes he should have done his duty to the whole world but pinning what happens later isn't fair as it's impossible for him to have the foresight of what would happen once he was gone.
@@r.r815 Well, I don't entirely blame Avatar Szeto for everything that has happened to the Fire Nation during Avatar Roku and Aang's time. Sozin is definitely the most responsible guy for starting the bloody fiery war, but that didn't mean Sozin is the only responsible guy. It appears that Avatar Szeto also play/provide some role on throwing the Fire Nation into an arrogant nation. If only his governing principles being shared equally with the rest of the world, the Fire Lord, hence the Fire Nation as a whole, would never ever even attempt to have the thought of "sharing their prosperity to the rest of the world" by their own way. So yeah, he did guilty for making Roku and especially Aang suffer, although not the primary convict.

As usual, awesome video! I loved how you discussed Szeto's natural progression through Fire Nation society. I hadn't really thought about it before, but as you pointed out, characters in Avatar become advanced in new skills super fast such as Katara with waterbending, so it's nice seeing a character as powerful as the Avatar having to take things at a normal rate. I also finally finished Shadow of Kyoshi last week and I absolutely agree with you that the book does an awesome job expanding on some of the Avatars. It's so fascinating seeing all the unique takes they had to Avatarhood and Szeto's is especially interesting with him staying in politics. I'm now curious to know how his choices, in turn, impacted Yangchen's world. Finally, I love the music you chose for this video. It's so relaxing. 😀
Do you have a video about the cause and effect of the Avatar's lives? Like how the next avatar has to deal with the previous ones failures and mistakes? How it is a continuing cycle going all the way to Korra.
I’m really enjoying your videos! I’m a huge fan of the Avatar: The Last Airbender series. But I have read very little of the supplemental material. Your videos are giving me so much detail to build out the Avatar universe in my mind.
The thing is szeto still has an advantage when it comes to going thru the ranks cause as the avatar people would not only notice his achivements more but would probably be helped more and rewarded more so yeah the intent in him is great but isnt really that big a deal
I need me a short series about Szeto that’s half regular avatar and half mockumentary like The Office. Like “So Administrator Chun hasn’t paid his taxes despite me asking him multiple times so it’s time to pay him a visit.” *explodes 4 volcanoes*
cool i'm glad got new on the information on the fire nation Avatar before Roku most avatars always thought of mastering 4 elements and bringing balance to the world, after hearing his story i see that used his head as a weapon and rose to the top in order to save his people.
content is amazing! i love what you done with Asian music, it suites the topic you are talking about. it almost gives an avatar feel since avatar the last air bender is overloaded with Asian music
I would love to see the Avatar one or two generations later from Korra. By then it would be closer to our world where technology rules and there is certain 'pacts' like our UN has which would never really allow countries to just go to war or use weapons of mass destruction against each other without heavy consequences. Plus the new technology could also mean that the Avatar could be replaced both physically and even spiritually where normal humans can interact with spirits directly. I also said maybe 2 generations afterwards cause I do wanna see another Fire Bending Avatar as the Fire Nation seems to be the most technologically advanced among all and it would be interesting to see this Avatar's upbringing and journey. Plus I love Fire...

Damn this is interesting. My thing id like to contribute is that this is semingly in direct contrast to Avatar Roku, who did not serve "his firelord". We see Sozin clearly upset that Roku is not taking instruction here and that they do not meet regularly in their adult life despite their childhood friendship. Its possible that Sozin is influenced by the closeness of the previous firelord as afterall hed surely look up the last time a fire avatar was around.
@@AntoineBandele Oh absolutely, he almost certainly was not popular elsewhere. I can imagine that when he did discuss matters in other countries though, despite his fire nation dominant background he would be able to provide some ingenious solutions as he has a perspectiv of someone who has worked their way up, as you descrobed before, and perhaps in his later life his influence spread to even the earth kingdoms. I may wish to read the passages myself for clarity though
@ron Just to be extra clear, Korra is not o blame for losing her past lives. Everything else you said in your comment was an action but this is an exception and is kinda a weird way to describe it
The fact that so many people are still interested in the Avatar universe shows that the creators should make more Avatar content. We need more books and more seasons. I think the creators should come up with a project where they will showcase the Avatars before Yangchen. I would love to see prequel episodes. One Avatar for each season.

The point of the Avatars is that they're supposed to maintain balance. But imbalance can take many forms. Someone like Szeto can be as much a unifier as someone like Aang, because how the Avatar restores balance is not a set plan

Yuuuuup. Nobody can tell me the FN is not basically Japan.
@@AntoineBandele Really, people though the Fire Nation is not Japan equivalent? I thought its kinda obvious (aside from no Samurai and Ninjas)
So Szeto is Nobunaga?
centerofstar ‘No Ninjas’, Blue Spirit Stealthy Zuko would like to have a word with you
That as well as everyone in the Fire Nation looking alot more Samurai like in the pilot episode.
FINALLY A VIDEO ON SZETO I LOVE HIM A LOT AND O FEEL LIKE HE IS KINDA UNDERATED
Yess xD. I'm sure his popularity will grow as time passes and more people discover his character.
Maybe it's because he is just shown only once in legend of korra and doesn't have dialogue 😂
*Antoine says avatar Jafar*

I just love how diverse the Avatars are and how different their goals and things were. I hope they dive deeper into other past Avatars like "Gimli" and that really cool woman Waterbender Avatar, they could really just do this forever!!
Avatar Szeto sounds like a Ravenclaw.
Totally.
Then i think roku is a hufflepuff and kiyoshi is a slytherin, just my opinion.

And a mad max guy with a gas mask
Zseto is Ying and Yang incarnated, in his actions.
He focused on the fire nation because he was needed the most there. He made welfare programs and helped the nation to thrive once again. That is the good part.
Yet, the bad unforseen consequences of his actions were that with his stability and focusing on the fire nation he layed the path for Ozai and the Hundred Years War, he basically feed the Fire Nation until they became a jugernaut of conquest later down the line.
I love your videos! They're so interesting.
thanks for the heart
I wish FC Yee mentioned a little bit about his INSANE lavabending skills
I know!! Dude was bending volcanoes! Volcanoes, plural!!
Another thing I find interesting about Avatar Szeto is that he is one of the only avatars that we know who has good political experience.
Great analysis 👌🏾
This avatar did what was needed at the time. It happened to directly benefit the fire Nation but by doing so it kept chaos from spreading into the other nations.
Szezto is Avatar Jafar, and Wan is Avatar Alladin, change my mind
u are right
Wan is Avatar Aladdin all right. His character is just a recurring cunning, banished and lightbearer Lucifer/Satan figure used across media such as Aladdin, Flynn Rider, Maui, Guy from Croods etc.
Never even heard of all these avatars why weren’t they in atla. Where do u people find these extra characters or other avatars past from?

Point Seven No you are right, I watched avatar so many times and he did tell Zuko that his great grandfather is Avatar Roku on his mom side of the family
@@pointseventhree No, Ursa was Roku's Great Grandaughter, and were unrelated to the royal bloodline until Ursa married Ozai. Roku IS NOT a part of the royal bloodline
So, Szeto is basically the strongest accountant in history.
Having just read this specific chapter yesterday/last night, I immediately became interested in Avatar Szeto. The backstory he was given was very different to the backstories of the Avatars we know which helped him stand out in my mind. And now I wouldn't mind getting a book or two with Szeto as the main character.
"why don't we all just be like air nomads" a question I ask myself every day everything would be so much better
I love learning about the previous Avatars. They all played a role one way or another outside their Avatar status, like the sage/business/prince(ss), noble, government, etc. If that makes sense. Like some just stayed concentrated to their home nation.
Also another amusing thing, that music you played at 00:18, I listened to that music most of the time I was reading the Kyoshi books 😂😂
Keep up the awesome work!
LOL "Avatar Jafar" had me dead

@@LuckyOwI777 also if it was 1 season per avatar that would be over 100 seasons. You'd likely be dead before getting through the series.
So nice to see content on the Kyoshi Novels!

I don’t know how long you have been doing this format but this is awesome and keep it up.
He's smart, a high rank official, and also the Avatar. Szeto has reached the level of Super Mega Asian
It makes you wonder how many of the past Avatar were leaders, politician, philosophers, warriors, and General of their Nation. In order to get the world the way it is for Szeto all the way to Korra.
ahhh this actually puts forth a bit more context to one of sozins' and roku's conversations in 'the avatar and the firelord'!! i forget in exactly _which_ flashback this was said, but sozin told ruku something along the lines of 'your loyalty is to the fire nation, anything less makes you a traitor.'
at the time, i thought that was just sozin being sozin, but now looking back, maybe it was the way the general fire nation population thought too given szeto's approach; it would further explain how/why it was easy for roku's descendants just to blend in as commoners, bc his avatar legacy probably didnt do them any favors.
I love your videos bro. You deserve more subscribers and I hope that you can talk about other series without loosing your viewers! Great work!
Me too. I'm honestly really scared I might get pigeon-holed into Avatar. I really need to start incorporating other franchises soon to make it clear I don't do Avatar-only.

I do have something like that set up now for my channel members.
I just read this book and it actually never said that he didn't travel at all nor he only served the Fire Nation exclusively. It just said he worked as politician in the Fire Nation. And that his achievements within the Fire Nation was due to his political work.

Hi

the avatar must maintain balance, that’s always been their job, as Iroh said the 4 nations are 4 parts of the same whole. Szeto was wise to make sure the fire nation was in balance first
I love that you say “be water my friends” at the end of videos cause I live by that. Everything comes in waves, good or bad, we just gotta ride them out
💧
Edit:
Come to think again, Szeto isn't that good of an Avatar, because he didn't have enough balance of sharing equal attentions to all nations.
@@SerGio-mw9pc so what your argument is pointless. It's like saying oh no the guy who invented created the concept of trades routes is responsible for the slave trade.

I just saw your karuk video and got interested in this one too. Super interesting, keep up the great work!
I'm sure Ozai would have tried to destroy the legacy of Avatar Szeto with reinvention of history.
Had to hit it with the nice Japanese tunes for this one for sure.
I would love if they gave us the stories of more old avatars and one day they may evem turn it into an animated series.
I love how many stories the Avatar universe has yet to tell ♥️
The thing is szeto still has an advantage when it comes to going thru the ranks cause as the avatar people would not only notice his achivements more but would probably be helped more and rewarded more so yeah the intent in him is great but isnt really that big a deal
I need me a short series about Szeto that’s half regular avatar and half mockumentary like The Office. Like “So Administrator Chun hasn’t paid his taxes despite me asking him multiple times so it’s time to pay him a visit.” *explodes 4 volcanoes*
doesn’t that mean Zuko has 2 avatars in his blood Jafar and Ruko?

content is amazing! i love what you done with Asian music, it suites the topic you are talking about. it almost gives an avatar feel since avatar the last air bender is overloaded with Asian music
Sometimes, focusing your talents offers more benefit to others than distributing your talents to a variety of interests. It's entirely possible to spread yourself so thin that your efforts are too shallow to notice.
And I’m sure not everyone was happy with Szeto. Bet there was some neglect in Earth Kingdom that people weren’t happy about.

Ok, we're almost at Gimli
Avatar Szeto working alongside the Royal Family would totally make sense why Firelord Azulon would want a descendant of the Avatar to marry Ozai. It's been explained that it's more of political connections, but taking the success of Avatar Szeto, it affirms that there's more to it. Idk lol
I would like to hear about the second avatar and their life experiences and how wan could maybe guide since the avatar was still relatively new

The point of the Avatars is that they're supposed to maintain balance. But imbalance can take many forms. Someone like Szeto can be as much a unifier as someone like Aang, because how the Avatar restores balance is not a set plan
