Sub bending types you missed: Sand Bending - substyle of earthbending that uses moves reminiscent of air bending. Plant Bending/Swamp Bending - substyle of waterbending used by the swap village. Cloud bending - only used once by Anng and Katara, but would be really useful in other places if they'd thought of it. I theorize that chi blocking is actually a substyle of air bending, and all those who learn it have air monk ancestry.
From the novels there are some more examples such as: Kyoshi using Earhbending to become immortal until she chose to die in her 300s, Yangchen amplifying her voice with air bending, Yun liquefying rock without heating it up, and the truly awful process to unlock combustion bending. Also, sand bending should probably be considered since Toph stated she specifically had to practice it after losing Appa. But other than that great video, a very succinct explanation of the ones you covered.
@jacintacapelety9600 If I remember right they don't get into the mechanics very much, she meets an earth bender who is implied to be like a couple thousand years old, and he teaches her how to do it. I think he says it involves freezing an image of yourself in your mind and using chi to like fix the wear and tear on your body like aging and stuff. It's been a couple years since I read the book though, so take that with a grain of salt
I think the real answer though is just that the creators misjudged the timeline a little so math wise Kyoshi had to live to like 300 something. So, it came up to fix that one issue and it hasn't really been mentioned since.
I think there's a third firebending substyle: Thermal energy bending. As seen in the flashback episode, sozen was able to cool down a volcano by drawing in the heat and releasing it. Implies that firebending is more than just fire, but is only ever used the once from what I can tell.
twice, actually, i had forgotten about this but yeah, as I stated in my comment Zuko uses this in the northern water tribe while hes underwater to melt his way through the ice and warm himself after. Iroh mentions it to him, meaning at least to me, Iroh is aware of it as well
@@theMaDNesS201 This is slightly different than what I would refer to as “heat transfer” that Sozin uses. In your example, Zuko is using his own chi to melt the ice and warm himself. What Sozin does is take heat out of lava and disperse it into the air, and it’s the only time we’ve seen anything like it in Avatar. Theoretically, a firebender proficient enough in this technique might be able to absorb heat and covert it to chi to restore their energy.
@@cloudwatcher608 I get your point, and understand your pov, I guess I was just saying its like two sides of the same coin. either way is as you said "heat transfer" one is just more inside out vs outside in, if that makes any sense? all bending is chi related, or Jin, I think as Boomy called it, why TyLee and her Chi blocking stops bending. also did you see my main comment about Lightning bending?
In answer to your question, yes, Azula did kill Aang. They used euphemisms on the show but he says something to the effect of “I was gone and you brought me back” in S03:E01.
I think she didn't because of the rule: If you die in the Avatar State you break the cycle. Aang didn't die at least not completely. He was dying, yes. But he did not die, maybe he was 10 seconds from dying. But not dead. And the lightning severed his Chi, blocking Aang's access to the Avatar State until he got his column cracked by that rock so the Chi could flow again, but he wasn't all dead.
his heart probably stopped beating from that shock or in an irregular rhythem that would kill him in seconds and she used water bending to revive him. Like we would do with a defibrilator
"There’s a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there’s usually only one thing you can do. Go through his clothes and look for loose change." ~ Miracle Max
A few Airbending techniques that I think could be possible. Amplifying their voice/listening in on conversations. Invisibility and explosions: Not only could they amplify their own voice through manipulating sound waves in the air, but they could probably listen in on conversations from miles away. Ever notice how sound travels really well over a lake? It's because there's no obstruction for the sound waves to bounce off of. Airbenders could probably guide the sound waves directly to them and listen to the conversation as if they were standing next to the people talking. (Storm from the X-men can do this.) They could also theoretically "turn invisible" as well. By manipulating the air around them, they may be able to bend light around them giving the illusion of invisibility. The same way that the atmosphere bends around the curvature of the Earth. Like how you can see a ship in the distance that's technically below the horizon. Or how heat waves on a very hot day distort the air giving that rippling effect to the air. Just like how water refracts light, air does too. By manipulating the atmosphere around them; changing it's temperature, pressure and density; they could theoretically refract the light enough that they could bend the light around themselves giving them the illusion of being invisible. Ie. Seeing the air behind them rather than the air in front of them. Airbender explosion. They create a vacuum and then force the air back in. A shockwave is created by the impact of the air rushing in to fill the void. Heat and light are created by the friction of the air molecules rushing by each other. It would be a lot like combustion bending, but instead of heating up the air in front of you and propelling it forward, you're simply creating a negative pressure area that you then use airbending to fill with compressed air. If you get creative enough, the bending arts could open up a whole new world of possibilities.
Now we're thinking with portals. Airbenders, applying techniques of waterbenders, should be able to heat up/cool down seperate streams of air, and make it rain by bringing them back together. In a similar manner they could create tornados which require no further bending input. Taking a page out of metal and blood benders' books, they could rip the oxygen out of someone's blood and create gas embolisms. So, no controlling someone, just near instant necrosis of dependant tissues. They can use this to specifically create heart attacks and strokes.
I love both of these comments! Im not sold on invisibility being and air technique seems to me that would more readily fall under fire bending which would open up the possibilities of them creating illusions or even causing fever dreams. Could you imagine raising your enemies body temperature so high they can't think straight... That's that is a tactic azula would love!
i think lightning bending is a really good example of the statement from the beginning of the video, that any bender of each element can achieve these sub bending techniques (with the exception of lava bending). it feels clear to me at least that lightning bending is actually not particularly difficult, but rather it was something of a closed practice within only the royal family of the fire nation. then when zuko became fire lord, he unsealed the practice making it more accessible
I love this! But how in this understanding do you say that lava bending doesn't fall into that? Bo was able to do it (all be it under extreme circumstances) but isn't that how life goes?! If Toph wasn't trapped in that metal box (extreme circumstance) would she have ever figured out metal bending was possible and been able to pass it on? Just theorising with you.
@@Stankmanerwhen Bolin does lava bending, they said to him "it's a rare ability". The daughter of Toph, one of the greatest masters and teachers, told him that not everyone can achieve it...
@@dariodelvoije they never said that in atla, they said Toph thought she was the best but couldn't do it but they never said SOMEONE could... was more about moking her than about comparing her to someone else... as far as everyone in atla knows, metal bending isn't possible... or, if supposedly someone DID know how to metalbend, that was their secret (which obviously they WOULDN'T reveal, the fire nation using a metal cage with Bumy, the greatest known earthbender, proves metalbending wasn't supposed to exist) but in atlok they have a school... people actually can share their knowledge since there's no war to worry about, people shared the techniques and tried them and still only a few were able to achieve lavabending... knowing exactly how to do it, just like Bolin not being able to metalbend at the school... now, Bolin might be to dumb to understand how to metalbend (we see time and time again he isn't she brightest) but every earthbender in the world being too dumb to lavabend while still learning to metalbend is a stretch... unless you want to assume lavabending is the ultimate earthbending technique, like airbending's flight, and takes a very special and specific state of mind to achieve...
11:36 It was confirmed in the audio commentaries that what Jinora did was that she collected spiritual energy and then used it to awaken Raava within UnaVaatu. Then again, the creators in that same commentary said they don’t understand it fully either.
Haha imo I think they don't understand it either because they were unable to work on Korra as much as they did with ATLA. Due to nickelodeon telling them every season will be the last season. Hence why it feels rushed
Korra's Season 2's spiritual stuff breaks all type of lore. Raava and Vaatu goes against the concept of the Avatar as in the Avatar is not inherently good, but balance. And that everything has good and evil inside them, even the Avatar. That is what Roku taught Aang in 'The Avatar and the Fire Lord'. In the first show spirits were above human morals. They werent good or evil, they just were. Thats why Heibai atracked the people. He wasnt evil, he was just angry his forest got destroyed. Even the scariest spirit, the face stealer, is not evil and he happily answers to the Avatar questions when asked politely. Also the Ying Yang is already explicitly said that is the Ocean and the Moon, not Raava and Vaatu, not to mention that also the origin of bending was completely destroyed, which made the season 1 finale of ATLA make no sense: The moon doesn't matter. Bending comes from lion turtles. Even the explanation that both things are true, and the moon, dragons etc taught people how to use bending, even though it came from lion turtles falls apart when killing the moon literally eliminates waterbending in the whole Earth until a new Moon (Yue) could take her place. I can accept all seasons of Korra but not Season 2.
I love SCB especially your Harry Potter theories, but ATLA was my first love and the SCB videos and quiz questions have always been very surface level to me. I wish you guys did more theories here because avatar is an awesome universe with a lot of lore!
Intresting fact about bloodbending episode. it was originally aired during the week of Halloween! Perfect episode for a story based episode for the spooky season.
5:45 I liken lava bending to the Water bending technique of instantly shifting water to ice and back: it's the same energy-level-phase-change in their respective materials, but the much higher energy requirements for rock to phase change tracks with how few earth benders can do it... and Bolin has LOTS of energy!
In theory would it be possible for a waterbender to _boil_ water? Since they can freeze water this implies they have the ability to alter its temperature. Now that I think of it... Probably the _only_ reason "ice bending" is so widespread is because both Water Tribes live in the frozen North and South Poles. If they weren't surrounded by ice constantly they likely would not have even attempted the technique.
Seismic sense is not limited to things on the ground as Toph can sense earth that is floating (this detail is only shown in the avatar extras). Also Lava bending is genetic, requiring an earth bender and fire bender to have an earth bender kid but it's not guaranteed they'll be able to lava bend (revealed in the comics).
Initially, they said it was a combination of Fire and Earth Bending so only the Avatar could do it, but in Legends of Korra they introduced Ghazan an Earth Bender who can bend Lava. They then retconned it into just being a very rare Earth Bending ability. Toph even confirms so in Season 4.
@@Lupinemancer87 The only lava benders we see either have parents of unconfirmed bending, Bolin who's parents were an earth and fire bender, and then the kids from that one city in the comics of earth and fire benders, as well as the avatar
I think ice bending is so common because it’s a resource that’s plentiful and has been around as long as bending has. And it’s probably easy to teach because of the generations of knowledge around it, that maybe it’s even as instinctual as water becoming ice. Whereas lava is just not as easily accessible, so less people have the opportunity to even attempt learning it. I also think that air bending has huge potential for destruction, but because of the pacifist culture they historically haven’t explored the potential there.
Aangs words “I was gone, but you brought me back” Book 3 Episode 1 quote but I don’t think he was all the way dead yet, his injury was definitely fatal though.
there’s an ancient earthbender who learned to bend the metal in his body to slow his aging process making him immortal and he’ll never die of old age (he lived for over 3000 years and it makes sense why avatar kyoshi had a lifespan of 240 years as she met him when she was was in her 20s) it’s an illegal form of bending like blood bending
9:25 No other Earthly attachments.. Like his friends, and his life's mission of anarchy and killing the avatar. You know, the one single attachment he's held onto his entire life. By his very own logic, Zaheer should never have been able to learn flight. It's always bothered me.
I think Bonebending could be a thing. It would be an Earthbender ability. Bones are made up of Potassium Phosphate. Which is an earthen mineral that could potentially be bent by Earthbenders the same way Waterbenders bend the water in blood.
Interesting thoughts! Dark yet possible! I like it but I pose this 2 part question... Seeing how bones are ridged and will snap how can one use this style? And what would it's affect be? (like would you be a puppet like under blood bending? Or just be left broken on the floor?)
@@PerovNigma No they couldn't. There is so little iron in your blood that an Earthbender likely wouldn't even be able to detect it in the first place. And on top of that, they wouldn't be bending the iron itself, they'd be bending any raw mineral within the iron which is significantly less still. It would be like Galactus trying to pick up a single grain of sand. It's just not happening. It's WAY too small of an amount for Earthbenders to grab ahold of.
@@StankmanerRocks are ridgid and can snap/break/crumble, but they don't when Earthbenders bend them. I think it would be largely the same. I think you'd still be a puppet like with Waterbending.
Hey Brother! With the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, we finally got a real map although I didn’t think much of it until I saw your review. And now there’s an official map compared to the modern states. My task for you is to use geography and theories and science stuff to calculate once and for all, when the Hunger Games takes place. (And I bet it’s a lot more than 300 years). It may be hard, but the whole fandom is counting on you. And may the odds be ever in your favor!
A few theories : 1. What if the reason nobody outside of the avatar can lava bend before is because its like watery rock. So it acts like water and requires water bending-like techniques to do. The avatar, being able to use all elements know how to do it because they know how to move water. And also, its like the opposite of earth to begin with, being liquid and move around a lot unlike an unmoving rock. 2. This is just a personal theory, but what if the one who gives the lightning bending techniques to the fire nation royal family is the blue dragons. Like maybe it's a tradition for the fire lord to have a blue dragon and the fire nation avatar a red one, so the blue dragon could have used lightning bending and give the technique to them. Just imagine it, a dragon spewing lighting instead of fire.
My personal head canon was always that each element has an affinity for a second. Earth with Fire (breaking/heating/forging) , Fire with Air (explosive/ionizing the air), Air with Water (water flows and ebbs/very connected to the spirits), and Water with Earth(detecting minerals in blood for healing/bloodbending/hardening water).
I’ve been thinking about the mechanics of how Lightning Generation works and how it can be a sub-section of Fire (Iroh’s explanation didn’t really make em understand how it relates to fire) And I’ve come to a bit of a conclusion: the Four States of Matter Solid (Earth) Liquid (Water) Gas (Air) And Plasma! Fire is a plasma! And so is Lightning! It’s not just Firebending it’s Plasmabending! Which means that in theory (in AVATAR Theory!) a VERY powerful Firebender could create an actual Kame-Hame-Ha laser blast
Plasma really isn't a state of matter it's a flase concept. He also missed 2 fire subclass classes and didn't correctly explain how lightning bending works in korra... because it's not lightning bending
@@SkyPerson Missed 2 fire subclass - heat redirection and spiritual sensing. Also there is no lightning bending in Korra. It's electricity bending. Basically why would the royal family teach people a one hit kill move? So its more of a very precise fireblast. All canon just not in story yet. Also aang never flew, its an avatar state thing because it causes ego death like DMT so you "let go" Finally combustion bending? Not a class. Its just psychic fire bending. All elements can do it and to be frank - is useless if you have arms... Then there's the case of blood bending... earth benders should be able to do it as well unless "bloodbending" is actually bending water not blood because, lol, the body aside from water is basically all carbon - which earth benders can bend..
@SkyPerson basically lightning bending is lethal and requires charging. In korra they do not charge up, so its more like a nerf as the devs explained. Wish I could find the podcast the said it on. They explained that and guns in detail lol - so is it lore or not if they never put it in the story? Up for debate I suppose
Your bones are made of calcium which is an earth element so by that logic earth benders should be able to do something very similar to what blood benders can do.
"It is her mastery of the seismic sense that allows her to metalbend" don't forget that she was trained by the badgermoles, one of the strongest natural earthbenders out there.
i do feel the need to add that per the creators of ATLA, lava bending actually cannot be done by any earthbender. it can only be done by earthbenders that r the children of an earthbender and a firebender. that’s why bolin can lava bend but korra cannot ever lava bend. pretty cool if u ask me
i always head cannoned that energy bending/taking someones bending away (i know that energy bending isnt always taking bending away yeah, yeah, yeah) was a water bending thing that barely anyone can do (like how only a few people can bloodbend anytime and not only on full moons) because of amon and how he was able to take bending away, but was mainly used by the avatar until amon figured out that water benders could to it too TL;DR i head cannon taking someones bending away as water bending because of amon :3
I got a fun question to ask you. What would happen if Korra used energy bending to restore bending to a non bender? She does the same movements but just to someone without bending maybe they unlock it and the avatar is just like the lion turtle giving bending?
I’m 51 and watched this when it came out with my kids. Avatar the Last Airbender is the greatest show ever!!!! I still rewatch all the time. Uncle is my favorite!! 🥰🥰
Solid theory about blood bending. You are able to control other people’s movements. You could force the movements of another bender to make them bend their element. This would be the highest form of blood bending as you would have to study bending styles to properly choreograph the other elements.
Not only is Sand Bending being ignored here, you seem to be forgetting Monk Eatso clearly used a forbidden type of Air Bending when he fought the Fire Nation soldiers when they invaded the Air Temple. I mean, those piles of Fire Nation soldier skeletons weren't caused by the soldiers just suddenly dropping dead, you know
Or maybe Oxygen bending as he was up against fire benders? Maybe he super oxygenated the air immediately around them and deoxygenated it around himself so that when they used fire they exploded into flames themselves?
What about the plant bending that the swamp tribe (water bender tribe) uses and the sand bending that the sand tribe uses (earth bender tribe) and if sand can be bended then couldn't theoretically glass be bent similarly to how metal is bended?
Let's not also forget about (water based) weather bending, smoke bending (though might be a skill than an actual sub bending) and chi bending/blocking (though can be used by non-benders can be classified as a sub class of energy/soul bending and classified as a Neutral energy based bending along non-benders to use it though not as effectively as benders since it has no elemental energy and affiliation though is believed to be taught to the people by wandering air nomads)
How do we know water bending couldn't heal blindness? It is likely her father would have been too embarrassed to ask a water bender for help. And I don't see anytime when toph cared about being blind. I don't think she would have even though or wanted to try healing her vision.
For other sub-bending that was shown, we had sand bending (earth) and plant bending (water). Cloud bending was performed by Kitara and Aang combining water and air bending. Aang and Boomy were able to gemstone bend, but that might be accessible to any earth bender. I would argue that a potential sub-bending for air would be gas bending. That would allow you to bend specific elements within the air to increase or decrease their concentrations.
Something interesting for Combustion benders, technically for them genetic predisposition is important. They must be firebenders (of course) and they must be tall and with great lung capacity. In the book of Yangchen, it is revealed how combustion benders are trained: they are literally dropped with weights attached to their feet to the bottom of a water body and forced to fire bender like that. Not ironically the once that survive this training were usually the ones who were larger than average people.
11:48 - I'd say no, because water has always been thought of in-world as the element of change, so waterbenders would have always been aware of how water itself changes its form as it goes from vapor to liquid to ice. Earth, on the other hand, is famously a "stubborn" element, requiring its bender to be more stubborn than rock itself in order to move it. Earthbenders, therefore, are hardwired to not think of earth in any other form than solid. This makes lavabending a sub bending discipline of earth because it requires a different mindset than the one earthbenders have set in stone.
Quick note, Aang did die from Azula's lighting attack and there used to be a flash game on Nick's previous webpage called "escape from the spirit world" which details Aang's journey through it while he was unconscious. At the moment, there are a few videos here which show the animation parts of it. And yes, it is canon.
6:07 😄 My answer for your question taken from the transcript of *Book 3 Fire Chapter 1 The Awakening* : *Aang and Katara back in Aang's room on the ship:* ... *Aang* : I went down! I didn't just get hurt, did I? It was worse than that. *I was gone! But you brought me back.* *Katara* : I just used the spirit water from the North Pole. I don't know what I did exactly. *Aang* : [Turning to look at her.] You saved me. *Katara* : [Placing a hand on the side of his face.] You need to rest. ... Next Scene ...
10:10 You forget that Aang did fly during the final fight with Ozai. It seems to be only accessible to him while in the Avatar State, similar to the scene you mentioned when he gets zapped.
Soundbending definitely exists, or should, as a style of airbending. Sound waves are basically just tiny pulses of wind, so an Airbender should be able to manipulate sound. Although I bet it's very tough. Firebending should also have both cold and light bending! We know firebenders can manipulate heat (in fact, my personality belief is that they can't technically "create" their element, they just use the ambient heat to fuel it), we see Sozin do it to help Roku cool off the volcano. So they should be able to vacate an area of heat, creating cold snaps. And, since fire is energy, light is the most basic form of energy. It's probably very slippery and it would be even tougher than soundbending, but firebenders should be able to warp light or even create illusions.
There is a theory that Airbenders are able to take the air out of a room and that’s why a monk giatso is found with a lot of fire, bender soldiers near him
I thought of "Gravity" bending. It's a subclass of air bending, your not really bending the gravity. Your bending the air pressure around and object, so you could use it to create the illusion that your bending gravity.
I do wonder if a suitably dedicated firebender could effect a form of metal bending if they first superheated the metal. Essentially they would be "heat bending" the metal. In much the same way could a firebender unlock lava bending as well?
I’ve always wondered about what other air sub-bendings could be possible. What if they heated the air like a lavabender heats rock, so that the air would become a plasma? Or what if they warped the air in a way that focussed light, therefore creating lightbending? Or what if they moved the air very precisely in such a way that it creates sound waves? Like imagine going to fight an airbender, and they immediately flashbang you with a wave of light and sound before microwaving you like a roast chicken. That’d be sick.
Before the avatar rpg system came out, I was playing a home-brew game with some friends, and the air bender in the party wanted to learn how to sound bend. I thought that was a really cool sub bending idea.
I read a fanfic that posited each bending can contribute to healing in some way. Like earthbending to heal broken bones or fix chi networks. Firebending to bring back body parts that would otherwise need to be amputated due to frostbite by breathing the life back into the dead part. I'm probably getting the details wrong, but the fic was The Dragon-King's Temple by Kryal on AO3. It sold me on the idea.
Been waiting for this video from you for so long didn't even think you guys would ever cover avatar I didn't know if that was one of the phantoms you were a part of since I don't think you've ever covered it really on this channel before so I am super hyped and excited for all the new avatar content although you're a little bit behind I think sincepeople have already covered so so much of it already, but I am excited to hear your take
I know it's the wrong video by figured it's the most recent comments I'll be noticed but I have a what if for Harry Potter.. what if the dursleys actually loved and cared for Harry Potter telling him the truth and raising him as one of their own
a potential sub type of air bending could be sound bending because sound is just vibrations in the air so a skilled air bender could control the vibrations in a way to disguise their voices or other things that one can do with sound
Thank you for covering why bending styles are more wide spread now! People often try to discredit Toph by using the present as an example that metal bending is easy. And others meme Iroh saying lighting bending is a rear form of bending, then showing the electric plant having lighting benders working. The 100 year war had a huge impact on bending and people seem to ignore it or not bother learning. Thanks again for covering the effects of the hundred year war. I'd also like to point out Tophs talk with Bolin about teaching him Metal bending and how she was impressed he knows lavabending.
Since you guys seem to be doing a lot of what if’s recently, here’s one: what if Aang never (literally) bumped into Professor Zei at the misty palms oasis? They never would have gone into the desert which means not only would they still have appa but also hey would never learn about the eclipse which changes everything
I'm surprised you pointed out a separation between water bending and ice bending but didn't mention the plant benders of the bayou or the sand benders of the desert. If the arguement is that these are just normal earth bending and water bending because of the environment, I'll point out that ice is only as ubiquitous as it is because the nothern and southern water tribes are polar.
Finally more Avatar content! But isn't sandbending missing? And yes, Bloodbending is extremly dangerous but what Zaheer did to the earthqeen was quite terrifying if you ask me 😅
Zaheer just proved that EVERY bender can kill you if they want... they mostly go to knock you out or make you surrender for some reason (honor probably, or information extraction maybe) but every one CAN just kill you and call it a day... 😅
I always thought of the different earth bending styles as being where earth meets the other elements. Your thought about lava being fire makes sense, but to me it was always more like water, because it's a liquid... Without getting too far into it: Metal, where earth meets fire because of the heat needed for refinement Lava, where water meets earth because of it being a liquid (plus water benders can manipulate the temperature of their element) Sand, naturally was where earth met air because it's so fine and can fly through the air. I don't have these for the other sub styles but I always pictured that for the earth ones
Iroh said that the technique to deflect lightning was created studying water benders, so we can start there... combustion is with air? Ice bending to earth, cloud bending to air, healing to fire since is done by reinforcing the chi? Now the air bending techniques, such as sound bending and flying, I don't know where to put them...
11:46 I would agree on the argument that magma/lava and water are similar to rock and ice. In a planetary geology course I took a few years ago, I learned that icy planets have lithospheres with water as their magma. This was mind-blowing to me when I learned it 🤯 Similarly, we are not inclined to think of ice as a rock either just because water is so prevelant on our planet and the temperature is just right so that the form changes regularly
Aang actually DID achieve flight briefly. Right before Azula struck him down with lightning, Aang managed to "let go of all attachment" and he started to levitate without using air bending to form a sphere around himself, or his glider.
6:32 from what I remember, lighting bending was a very closely held secret by the royal family. It was like a show of their supremacy and right to rule, much like Azula's blue fire.

Kyoshi died at 230. Suppose most people think it was 300 something due to Aang's stasis.
@@Gooiestmanitee using earth bending to push the minerals in your body back into place.
"But, alas. Earwax" Harry Potter can never escape these guys' minds and I am here for it!!
That is a good one! I didn't think of that one!
Wouldn't heating things up (Iroh's tea and bath) also count as this? He isn't making fire to heat things up, he heats things up directly
Sooo, are we always going to treat sand-bending like it doesn’t exist? Why?
Shouldn’t sand bending be part of earth bending already

In answer to your question, yes, Azula did kill Aang. They used euphemisms on the show but he says something to the effect of “I was gone and you brought me back” in S03:E01.
I think she didn't because of the rule: If you die in the Avatar State you break the cycle. Aang didn't die at least not completely. He was dying, yes. But he did not die, maybe he was 10 seconds from dying. But not dead. And the lightning severed his Chi, blocking Aang's access to the Avatar State until he got his column cracked by that rock so the Chi could flow again, but he wasn't all dead.
@@thevikingbear2343also, don't forget the rule if you die, you're dead
his heart probably stopped beating from that shock or in an irregular rhythem that would kill him in seconds and she used water bending to revive him. Like we would do with a defibrilator
"There’s a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there’s usually only one thing you can do. Go through his clothes and look for loose change." ~ Miracle Max

i like the idea of "blood healing" or using blood bending and water healing together to heal someone from the inside
He will forever be known to me as "Sparky Sparky Boom-man"

A few Airbending techniques that I think could be possible. Amplifying their voice/listening in on conversations. Invisibility and explosions:
Not only could they amplify their own voice through manipulating sound waves in the air, but they could probably listen in on conversations from miles away. Ever notice how sound travels really well over a lake? It's because there's no obstruction for the sound waves to bounce off of.
Airbenders could probably guide the sound waves directly to them and listen to the conversation as if they were standing next to the people talking. (Storm from the X-men can do this.)
They could also theoretically "turn invisible" as well.
@@LeofilmpersonLove it. We need a rated R Avatar series now!

i think lightning bending is a really good example of the statement from the beginning of the video, that any bender of each element can achieve these sub bending techniques (with the exception of lava bending). it feels clear to me at least that lightning bending is actually not particularly difficult, but rather it was something of a closed practice within only the royal family of the fire nation. then when zuko became fire lord, he unsealed the practice making it more accessible
In Korra it is a common skill
@@Stankmanerwhen Bolin does lava bending, they said to him "it's a rare ability". The daughter of Toph, one of the greatest masters and teachers, told him that not everyone can achieve it...
@@spiker.ortmann true, but they said the same about metalbending in atla, but in atlok its common
Korra's just a strange show.
Strange or bad.. @@samurexatlas7373
Haha imo I think they don't understand it either because they were unable to work on Korra as much as they did with ATLA. Due to nickelodeon telling them every season will be the last season. Hence why it feels rushed
@@RaraPremium That cannot help
I love the swamp benders and how creative they are.

@@PyroBST i hope we do not too much sub bending will be confusing
Also Lava bending is genetic, requiring an earth bender and fire bender to have an earth bender kid but it's not guaranteed they'll be able to lava bend (revealed in the comics).
i think that once those conditions r met, any child could lava bend, but it gets into what j said at the beginning bc diminishing returns
They have never confirmed that it is genetic. I’ve read the comics and I’ve watched the show multiple times.
@@dallasgrey4247 for real, it was just speculation regarding the genetic thing, there is no official statement regarding that.
Pretty sure you smell like scrambled eggs
He was mostly dead.
there’s an ancient earthbender who learned to bend the metal in his body to slow his aging process making him immortal and he’ll never die of old age (he lived for over 3000 years and it makes sense why avatar kyoshi had a lifespan of 240 years as she met him when she was was in her 20s) it’s an illegal form of bending like blood bending
YAY! AVATAR! LOVE THIS SERIES😊😊😊❤❤❤❤
I doubt you’ve even seen Avatar. You’re just a kids up
You are missing 3 sub bending styles: sand bending & glass bending (earth) and sound bending (air) (like a banshee)
Hope to see more Avatar videos in the future with the live-action series coming out.
As for possible sub bending I've always thought that a more malicious earth bender would be able to control the minerals in people and bone bend
I'd like to see breath bending, stop your opponent from inhaling or exhaling.
Glassbending is confirmed to be cannon too.
Alternatively, earthbenders could bloodbend using the iron in our blood. Also, firebenders could use the plasma and airbenders could use the oxygen.

Facts! Sand bending is a thing and it was difficult for Toph to bend or see. Also, crystal bending. That was pretty cool.
We can’t forget, crystal bending!
Or the only duel element bending- mud!
Katara and Toph fighting in the mud is epic... 😂
A few theories :
Ihro would be proud of you... You can come to the white lotus cookout!
That explains the avatar cycle's order too, going from element to element through this connection...
I’ve been thinking about the mechanics of how Lightning Generation works and how it can be a sub-section of Fire (Iroh’s explanation didn’t really make em understand how it relates to fire)
And I’ve come to a bit of a conclusion: the Four States of Matter
Solid (Earth)
Liquid (Water)
Gas (Air)
And Plasma!
@@Saaaahdoood what Fire Sub-bendings did they forget? And how is it not Lightning Bending in Korra?
@SkyPerson I'll just repost my comment lol... if it ever posts...
Also aang never flew, its an avatar state thing because it causes ego death like DMT so you "let go"
Finally combustion bending?
Your bones are made of calcium which is an earth element so by that logic earth benders should be able to do something very similar to what blood benders can do.

i do feel the need to add that per the creators of ATLA, lava bending actually cannot be done by any earthbender. it can only be done by earthbenders that r the children of an earthbender and a firebender. that’s why bolin can lava bend but korra cannot ever lava bend. pretty cool if u ask me

i always head cannoned that energy bending/taking someones bending away (i know that energy bending isnt always taking bending away yeah, yeah, yeah) was a water bending thing that barely anyone can do (like how only a few people can bloodbend anytime and not only on full moons) because of amon and how he was able to take bending away, but was mainly used by the avatar until amon figured out that water benders could to it too
TL;DR i head cannon taking someones bending away as water bending because of amon :3
I got a fun question to ask you. What would happen if Korra used energy bending to restore bending to a non bender? She does the same movements but just to someone without bending maybe they unlock it and the avatar is just like the lion turtle giving bending?
Follow up question - if they can, then taken to its extreme does that mean that the avatar could turn even a non bender into a new avatar?
I could not be more excited. Please more Avatar-Content

I’m 51 and watched this when it came out with my kids. Avatar the Last Airbender is the greatest show ever!!!! I still rewatch all the time. Uncle is my favorite!! 🥰🥰
Uncle Iroh is THE FAVORITE, not just yours... He has every likable trait on a character. 😁
After watching Shadow & Bone, I have to wonder if earth benders can’t blood bend using the trace metals in our bodies....
I mean, those piles of Fire Nation soldier skeletons weren't caused by the soldiers just suddenly dropping dead, you know
Asphyxiation bending?
Or maybe Oxygen bending as he was up against fire benders? Maybe he super oxygenated the air immediately around them and deoxygenated it around himself so that when they used fire they exploded into flames themselves?
What about the plant bending that the swamp tribe (water bender tribe) uses and the sand bending that the sand tribe uses (earth bender tribe) and if sand can be bended then couldn't theoretically glass be bent similarly to how metal is bended?
I also forgot to mention crystal bending
Let's not also forget about (water based) weather bending, smoke bending (though might be a skill than an actual sub bending) and chi bending/blocking (though can be used by non-benders can be classified as a sub class of energy/soul bending and classified as a Neutral energy based bending along non-benders to use it though not as effectively as benders since it has no elemental energy and affiliation though is believed to be taught to the people by wandering air nomads)
Allowing not along *
I asked for a Toph video a very long time ago on twitter, and I feel like this does it for me. You guys are thee best 🥰
“Alas Earwax” I caught that and now I want to see Harry Potter classified into elements
Or avatar characters sorted into houses @SuperCarlinBrothers

10:10 You forget that Aang did fly during the final fight with Ozai. It seems to be only accessible to him while in the Avatar State, similar to the scene you mentioned when he gets zapped.
Bone bending as a sub bending of earth.
There is a theory that Airbenders are able to take the air out of a room and that’s why a monk giatso is found with a lot of fire, bender soldiers near him
I could see it. After all, we know that they can remove the air from a person, if anything a room would probably be easier
I know it hard to continue to make Harry Potter theory’s when there not been any new content but I love them none the less
6:13 “Did he die?” “You know, they were really unclear about that.”
What about Zahir’s airbubble around the head? I know its just simple airbending, but still a deadly technique
It's not an individual bending style. Its just a bending move
Been waiting for this video from you for so long didn't even think you guys would ever cover avatar I didn't know if that was one of the phantoms you were a part of since I don't think you've ever covered it really on this channel before so I am super hyped and excited for all the new avatar content although you're a little bit behind I think sincepeople have already covered so so much of it already, but I am excited to hear your take
I know it's the wrong video by figured it's the most recent comments I'll be noticed but I have a what if for Harry Potter.. what if the dursleys actually loved and cared for Harry Potter telling him the truth and raising him as one of their own
Steam bending. Water sub type.
a potential sub type of air bending could be sound bending because sound is just vibrations in the air so a skilled air bender could control the vibrations in a way to disguise their voices or other things that one can do with sound
Like that one fan made chart online, we could say a variation of Air would be gravity, and that’s what flight is
Since you guys seem to be doing a lot of what if’s recently, here’s one: what if Aang never (literally) bumped into Professor Zei at the misty palms oasis?
Without getting too far into it:
Metal, where earth meets fire because of the heat needed for refinement
Lava, where water meets earth because of it being a liquid (plus water benders can manipulate the temperature of their element)
Sand, naturally was where earth met air because it's so fine and can fly through the air.
Zuko literally *does* bend lighting, he just never generates it himself. If he couldn’t bend it, then redirecting would technically be impossible.
Aang actually DID achieve flight briefly.
Right before Azula struck him down with lightning, Aang managed to "let go of all attachment" and he started to levitate without using air bending to form a sphere around himself, or his glider.
He literally brings this up this exact point. Why are you posting like he didn't?
6:32 from what I remember, lighting bending was a very closely held secret by the royal family. It was like a show of their supremacy and right to rule, much like Azula's blue fire.
