4 months to Double Axel | Progression Video

- Today I landed my Double Axel! I put together this video to show the progression I've gone through to learn this jump. I started 2A in July, but I wasn't very consistent with practicing it. Through July and August, my practice depended on the week. I did lots of traveling, so I wasn't able to skate during some weeks! Once school started, I was able to practice it a lot more (late August through the beginning of September). I then took another break for a few weeks because I was testing in September, and then again my practice was scattered in October because I was getting ready for competition. Finally, once November came around, I was determined to practice it every day. I hit the floor running with this jump and have kept my goal of practicing it every day! Things started to come together, and soon it was getting close to being landed. Last week, my coach and I put it in the harness to try and get the last quarter rotation I was missing (my first time doing 2A in the harness-ever!) Finally, something clicked today and I landed 3 of them! I know it's not perfect yet, but I am determined to get it 100% clean and make it the best I know it can be.
Thank you to my family, my friends at the rink, and my coach for supporting me and cheering me on throughout this whole process! I also want to thank everyone who has doubted me or diminished my progress. I could not have done it without all of you! Hope you all enjoy this video! Let me know which Axel you guys are working on!

watching this I realized how important it actually is to fall in figure skating. I haven't fallen during skating in 2 years and I'm actually scared of falling. that's the reason I'm afraid to put my full energy when I'm practising, and that's why I don't learn..
Nelli Martikainen don’t be afraid to fall! No one can progress without having hard times. The first time I was skating after 4 months made me scared too but I ended up overcoming that fear and it ended up being amazing! You can do it!
Same! What really helped me was getting proper protection (butt pads, crash pants) and then it was much easier to fall and I learned jumps faster
that was one of my problems so then i purposefully fell during easy close to the ground things and it helped so much
Girl don’t worry I do the same thing, I understand🙈
2 years is wild, please do fall that’s how u learn, if u don’t fall that means ur not gonna improve at all
I miss the ice rink so much. I am learning double axel and triples at home on the floor.;(
Awww me too :( it’s so hard not being able to skate! And omg that’s great! Good luck to you!! 🙌❤️
Me too 😭❤⛸
Super inspiring! I loved that each attempt seemed just as energetic as the first no matter how much you fell, congratulations of landing it!!! x
Imone!OnIce Awww thank you so much! You are so kind ❤️ good luck to you in your skating!! 🥰
Very nice progression. A small tip coming from someone who struggled with the Alex jump. Make sure to take off and get some air time before to start to rotate. In your axel jump you are trying to rotate too soon. When you take off, take that time to throw your leg up to get that air time. Once you've got a good height that is were you snap into the rotating position. Give it a shot if you are still working on the double axel. Nice video and thank you for sharing.
You need to step up with the free leg and then pull in fast because you are too close to the ground. You need the height in order to be able to complete the rotation and land. Until you get that you will be under-rotated or keep falling.
Hi, nice determination! I would say (it’s quite obvious or I wouldn’t say it) that you aren’t getting full take off from your jumping leg and that is why you’re not quite making all the way around! It got better throughout the video but definitely try to fully extend that jumping leg on the takeoff and you’ll get that extra bit you need!
tiasephora thank you but I’m not taking tips right now :) my 2A has changed a lot since this video
Quite right. Also the entry is too curvy. The take off should be forward, for that you need not to acelerate so much your right shoulder. Its a waltz jump folowed by a double loop. Its not a forward salchow
Amazing journey, you just have to get that last bit and then it’s clean😊
Haha that last bit of rotation is what keeps me up at night 😂
I just started my double axel today, I fell after I rotated revolutions , I twisted my ankle badly. I am really proud of your braveness and hard work! Keep going!!!!
This is so inspiring. 2 years and still an inconsistent 2S (definitely a mental thing), and watching this reminds me of my greatest fear, not exactly plopping on the ice but the uncontrollable landing on a right inside edge, no matter forwards or backwards....
Your progression makes me want to be more determined and persevering! Thanks for sharing!
Aww thank you so much for the comment! I can totally relate! Mental blocks are super tough, and learning to fall should be its own class! I really hope you are doing well with your 2sal! You’ve got this! 🙌❤️✨
You did so amazing! I am going to start learning the 2A soon and hope to land it! Gooooood job!!💜💜⛸
amazing. I had to stop skating for about a year cause covid. Now I'm back. I came back in mid June. I have a friend one year younger than me and yet she can already land the 2A. Im trying my best to land it and put it in my program. Im about needing 1/4 more rotion to make it clean.
Full respect to you. I underotate jumps because I'm too afraid of falling. You are so brave, awesome job, I could take some notes.👍
Thank you so much! 🙌
Wow. Absolutely incredible!!
Thank you so so much! 😄❤️
Love your idea for this video !! Good job! ☺️
Antonella Marina aw! Thank you so much! 🤪💕🥰
❤️❤️❤️looking good!!
Maria Humen | thank you so much!!
Your determination is inspiring!!
Adultskater thank you so much!! 😁❤️
this is so inspiring!!
I had all my doubles (except double axel) by age 12 so I started working on my double axel, I finally landed a clean on after working on it for THREE YEARS lol
Me too when i was young (now i am jumping triple Axel )
Lol my single Axel took a full year
Omg that’s great! Congrats! 🎉
You got it in 4 months??!?!! Hats awesome, I got my single axel in 2 months
Figure Skating Stan yes! And omg, that’s great! Congrats!! 🎊
Haley West thanks!
Lucky! I've been working on it for like 8 months, and i still barely have it :(
it took me 3 years!! don't worry!
x w don’t worry it took me like 2 years
This is an Inspiration for me to keep going my double axel. I am a young skater at only 10 and it’s hard doing it, I am getting close tho x
Wow your first attempts are a lot better than mine, I just starting working on mine today!
wow very good job👏🏻😍
nice job!!
Im rlly close to landing my axel and double sal. Im also working on double loop and double toe.
Wolf Girl yass
Yay! I recently landed my first double sal, I bet you already have your’s since that was 3 years ago
Post another video, I'm sure you have landed loads now and they are much better. Keep the practice up, you're doing really well.
Steve Herbert thanks and yes I will, currently working on a new video.
@@HaleyWest I am sure you must be there now Haley, keep up the hard work, you'll get there. Post a video when you are ready. Best of luck 😊
Nice job!
Blue Tangerine Media | thank you!
your determination is inspiring ❣️
Weronika Zawadzka thank you so much! That means a lot 🥰💕
Well done! My tip is to get more height!
3A,2A,3Lutz,Loop,Salchow. I think they were the most hard jumps 😞
Nice job
Erin Katelynn thank you!
Not quite a double axel in this video. Are you landing it clean now? Not hating just wondering
And then there I'm trying to jump my single axel for almost 5 years 😭✋🏻 To be fair i have 2-3 hours on ice week (now the rink is closed) and a lot of bad habits from my old trainer 🤷🏻♀️
I actually learned mine using a harness! I thought it was a bit easier
Did u get dizzy when u do this jump? I tried to do it(off ice) and now i get extremely nauseous when i think about figure skating (even when watching and writing this)
Is there a trick to overcome dizziness?
@@renaoriflamme996 you get used to it the more you do it, if you practice lots of backscratch spins it could help getting used to spinning fast in the air position
No not really! I don’t really get too dizzy from it! I guess the more you skate the more you get used to get rotations and not being dizzy lol 😂
Have you practiced jumping on floor or tarpaulin? Less painful than constantly falling on ice.
Allen I have! I find it’s actually harder on my body than on the ice haha!!
You have to jump first, then spin, not the opposite:)
hi! how long have you been ice skating? im 13 and im going to start skating this september. i know the basics, so how long would it take for me to do the double axel? can i still attend big competitions?
Ive been skating since i was 5. I had to stop skating for a year cause covid and now all my doubles not counting my 2A are always clean and I barely fall. Now I just turned 12 yet I'm still trying my best to land my 2A. I'm sooooo close. You might have had a late start but if you try ur best, you may be able to get your jumps and spins well sooner than me. :)
@@annieliu35 thank you so much!
Is it normal that i just started skating ive done for about 3-4 days and on the second day he taught how to skate on one foot and i couldt do it very i mean i could but hardly is it normal that i still cant skate on one foot i do about 1 hour a day
Solar Studios* Totally! That’s completely normal! I’m a figure skater and it just takes a lot of practice to get those moves! You got this girl!
That’s awesome! And haha yeah that’s pretty normal :)
You should follow through more. You’ll get more height distance and air time so you can rotate more.
Tip- rotate pn the way up. Try to turn over quicker
Good job,… but I think you still need about 1/2 rotation to make it cleab
I forgot how to skate (last time I was on the ice in December)
I can NOT jump axels at all, not even the single one. I jump off-ice double toe and loop (not in the last 2 moths due to strain) and double flip about 6-8 months ago. My axel is so terrible, I have just given up.
She got it in 4 months while it’s been like 9 months and I still don’t have it 😂
Haha that’s okay I’m still working on it 2 years later 😂👍🏻
You are amazing ,but your 2A is underrotated
You were amazing but try to push yourself higher in the air so when you land in becomes clean
You're getting there, but jump higher rather than round into the circle. If you try to jump a bit higher, you'll have more time to pull in and get more rotation.
Steve Herbert um thanks for the unsolicited advice.
@@HaleyWest Your rotating before taking off - cheating the jump. Take off without turning your blade. The double axel is a hard
jump. Yes this is constructive criticism Haley , so please take it that way. If you don't like constructive criticism, then maybe you should not post on RUclips.
@@PanchoMaldonado-hf6rq She's probably still working on it 😗
Nice Job! Could use more height :)
x w Thank you! And after it’s consistent I’ll work on things like that.
Four points should be straight enough for not bend your shoulder (hips and shoulder tight) and a little more elevation to complete the final half rotation forward jumps are more difficult than toe picked jumps by the way i was a Roller Skater
Omar Alfonso please read my pinned comment ☺️
@@HaleyWest I suggest you disable all comments if you don’t want to hear/see any. It’s kind of “understood” that anyone who posts on RUclips should expect commentary. That’s how it works! You post. People comment. You can’t post and then tell people to hush up. That’s bizarre.
@@Person-mh6xq hi there! Thank you for the response! I enjoy seeing comments on my video, that’s why you will find that you were able to comment! Because I chose not to disable comments. I understand that by putting my video on the internet that people feel the need to make comments. But that doesn’t excuse rude comments. I don’t see how asking people to keep rude remarks to themselves is bizzare, but go off ❤️ thanks again for trying to explain, but I understand perfectly well ✨🙌❤️
@@Person-mh6xq maybe you should try to put yourself out there and see what kind of comments you get ❤️
Actually, its clear, how you enter is all about.
You could try to correct your standing position(you are always to much front with the upper body) ,
dont wait your speed go down to jump
Jump higher (the height you had is for single jump) and
What you are doing with the hands ? Think about flying, you have to open them and close them when you start leaving the ground.
Its better someone thinks before trying 100 times and destroy your body.
You need to jump higher and to keep your lags together and it all will work out
wonder hoc she blamed so the light are took bright
ian flanagan what? Lol
You didnt get it earlier because you werent jumping high enough but great progress
little shrimp um okay?? thanks for the unsolicited advice...
Haley West that wasnt even advice i gave you.
You wrote I didn’t get it sooner because I wasn’t jumping high enough. Im sorry if my comment came across as rude, but so did yours. I get lots of unsolicited advice, and your comment read like you were telling me what I did wrong.
Skylar Di Paulo I’m sorry, who are you?
Haley West i know im not a coach but im sorry if thats why
Good progress but there not to backwards
Lilly Williams-Howell read my pinned comment! 😄
I personally think you should have worked to jump higher. then it should've taken faster to get a double. I see that you have speed but the height at the start wasn't quit enough.
The entrance ist much to round
And please JUMP First then rotate!!
U do it opposite!!
Please Close your Arms and legs!!
And i really miss your body strenght!!!
With your less of body strenght U will ever have big trouble with rotations and clean landings!!
Are u sure this isn't a tribute to avicii? ahaha
Paolo oh it definitely is haha 😂
Come around way too much and it stops you from getting any height and distance
Bad technique no offence, it’s too SWINGY
