  • The last time I went to Melbourne for some street photography, I added an extra ingredient to my camera.
I set my exposure triangle and didn't change it the whole time, BUT I did add something to my camera that I used to control my exposure.
So I created the Exposure Square.
I wasn't using shutter priority, or aperture priority, or ISO priority, I used ND Priority!
Check out the video and see how it worked, and what sort of street photos I got.

Excellent. Rules take the fun out of photography. If you’re not depending on your photos for your paycheque, there’s no point in not taking the pictures you want. I’m much happier since I decided to shoot for myself.

I have been using a VND for that purpose.
I have also used ten stops in bright light to get a 1s exposure in bright sunlight. Interval shooting of passers by, choose and maybe blend later. 1s might be a bit extreme, but I can't go faster than my camera's continuous shooting speed.

I watched a video not so long ago of someone explaining exposure as a pie-chart, instead of triangle or square.
That really made a lot of sense to me, as it also makes it easy to add components without changing the basic structure. You can add for instance your flash-strength, if shooting with a flash.
Or the strength of your variable ND filter, like you did!
    Or both.
And the principles will remain the same: make one segment smaller and you'll make another segment larger (or shrink the pie for a darker exposure. And the other way round.

Wildness! Highly irregular! Some would say, quite mad. Love it so much!

Pretty clever technique to your photos uniquely yours

    Very clever technique there Greg.
The book is great, really like the images.
I was thinking along the lines of spot metering which I use sometimes to control exposure e.g. white bird against dark background

It's use case specific, of course - but I like your "square" thinking behind it when you put it up as a variable "freewheeling" control.

This might be a good approach to me getting something from this recent Minolta 50mm f1.2 lens I got for a smashing deal. I haven't figure out what the heck to shoot at f1.2 .The d.o.f. is so shallow that it hasn't served me at all yet. I already have other Minolta fast 1.4 and 1.7 lenses. (all are adapted to Fuji X)

using an nd filter does the same as adjusting your iso!! no matter what you may think or method u use , there are only 3 settings in exposure. in this scenario the filter is the same as adjusting your iso!! as you wanted certain speed and depth in your photos shutter speed and aperture is left untouched.. its the same with Australian cuisine, prawns, bbq, dodgy beer !! there is no 4th ingredient..😂😂😂😂😂😂

Yeah, nah, not sure that's quite right... ND filters are basically sunglasses, they just provide less light to reach the sensor. ISO changes the sensitivity of the sensor, rather than the amount of light that reaches it. So I'm keeping my iso fixed, and changing the amount of light that gets to the sensor with the ND. I'd say the 4th ingredient to the prawns, bbq and beer is to have it at the beach...
