Get Out Of The Rut. Try to photograph something differently.
There's accepted ways to photograph certain events. With car shows, you are expected to capture the beautiful paint jobs, the polished chrome, the detailed engines.... but when you've done that year after year, you want to try something different, or you'll go mad!
So I did... I went the opposite of what is expected. Instead of colourful, sharp and bright, I went monochrome, blurry and grainy.
AND I ENJOYED IT MORE :)

Two Tripods, Neewer and Freewell. How good are they?

Tripods can be the best investment a photographer makes, but what sort do you need? Many photographers end up with two tripods, a strong sturdy one that usually weighs a lot, and a smaller lighter tripod for travel. I have the Freewell Sleek Travel tripod, which is so light I barely notice it strapped to my bag. For studio use, or for very rough conditions, I just bought the Neewer TP27, which ...

The NEW Fujifilm X-M5 vs Panasonic Lumix S9

TTartisan 100mm lens on Fujifilm Medium Format

The TTArtisan 100mm 2.8 lens was made for full frame/APSC/M43 however it also works on the GFX cameras. The news is mostly good - it covers the whole sensor, it's easy to focus, it does produce bubble bokeh as well as sunstars, it's dirt cheap. BUT, TTArtisan don't know how to fix the m42 mount so the lens is the right way up on the camera. Every other m42 lens I have is fine, until it comes to...

What's all the fuss about the Lumix S9 Launch?
Holden Monaros were sold in the USA, I think as Pontic GTOs. That trade stopped when the US motor industry went broke. Toranas were Vauxhauls in UK. I don't know whether it got the full range.
Yes, most of our cars were reworked Brit or US models. We tended to go a bit overboard though. Shoehorning a 5 litre V8 into the Toranas so they could race at Bathurst.
Nice photos, I'm a sucker for a good car show. I also loved the music too!
Some nice old cows, unusual ones you don't get here in Holland! And I saw a nice race horse too!
Oh and I very much enjoyed the music too.
Hi greg, i am considering buying the 17mm 1.4 for my panny S1. Do you know if this lens covers full frame image circle?
@@Someone_Else1 I haven't used it, so can't confirm
Spectacular images! I used to live almost on the top of a hill, with a quarry edge along my north boundary, and Sydney's Darling Harbour about 8km away. Every year I went out, trying to get good fireworks shots and never really pleased with my efforts. One time, as the neighbours' shrubbery had become a bit wild, I managed to set up my tripod on the top of my A-frame ladder to gain some elevation, which solved one problem, but not that of getting pretty malnourished shots. Now I am well out of Sydney; perhaps I should go to the park where fireworks are held about 15 minutes' drive away and see if I can put your suggestions into practice. Useful advice! Thanks, Greg.
All the best
I have the same lens and I would like to do the same mod. Have you done a video on actually doing the mod or can you explain in more detail how you did it. TIA, Simon
Hi Greg, well I have never seen such photos of fireworks. A true testament to your expertise and skill and the shots are absolutely stunning and brilliant. Well done, the colors and perspective are spot on in all respects. Thanks again for all you share with us here on the channel. I must say, every time I watch, I learn.
My pleasure, it's all fun.
What a great creative idea, really nice images 👍
This is a super creative way to shoot fireworks! Very well done & great shots!
I've got a Vanguard tripod and a KentFaith tripod that both have a centre column that can be use horizontally like the Neewer. The Vanguard even can be adjusted at various angles. Both were also quite affordable. Can't put anything on the other end of the stick however, like you demonstrated with the Neewer! The drawback I found, however, is that it seems the whole centre column becomes less stable and more wobbly. Not nice if you're trying to do a very precise setup for a macro shot. 😬
Perhaps you should record into something in your pocket, voice recorder or phone, and match recordings later. For more money and less forgetting to start recording, wireless to a receiver on camera, leave transmitter running.
A windy day. Maybe the levels in the camera were also too high....
@@GregCarrick I saw you reaching out and stretching the cable. A (minor) accident waiting for a chance to interrupt you. It would also let you wander off into the distance while continuing recording. Ever feel like paddling out into the drink to get the camera in the perfect position?
Wow… that is some serious value for money!
I couldn't go past it :)
I'm still lugging a big old Manfrotto alloy model. I rarely use it or take it out as it's so annoyingly big and heavy. The travel one is a good option. Hmmm
Surui has a similar one, cheaper but with a more basic head: store.sirui.com/products/sirui-super-lighweight-carbon-fiber-tripod-traveler-x
G'day Greg, Thank you for a practical & straight forward review. I bought this lens together with TT Artisan stick on focus tab. I like the built quality and decent image. None of your pictures have vignetting. I experienced vignetting at F2 and F2.8... much less at F5.6 and very little at F8. I suppose I must have got a unit that's not properly calibrated. Overall, I am eased with the lens. Great value, I must say. Cheers
Ouchie! Great vid Greg. Intrigued by the XT series. (PS, My wood splitting tendon injury took eleven months to fully mend itself. Got a splitty now, saving a fortune and my lungs). Mend well, love your work✌️🇦🇺
Thanks. The older I get the longer healing takes. I still have the XT2 (and an XH1), and use it when the weather is bad over my X-E4. I've heard the build quality has taken a hit with the XT4 & 5, so even if they do more, I'm not trading up.
That's a great timelapse at the end!
Those shots look absolutely awesome
Thanks, an unexpected outcome
Would you be able to do a video at some point for nighttime photography/star photography beginners guide. Be great to know some more information about settings.
@@NorthernMigrationTravel OK, I'll start planning one
@ awesome thank you 🙏
I'm not surprised. If you wanted, you could probably edit them out of the video. I have seen headlights and brakelights before. The lights might be better in fog. You could spend the week there honing your light painting skills. Going to the top and making like you're fishing using a handline, and a robust torch would be interesting.
I'm a fan, and appreciate these. The red tower and the lit steps are fantastic. However, it might be time to trim the eyebrows...I only notice my own if I have my readers on while washing up...then I'm surprised...
Thx for your video. Have you ever considered the panasonic s1? Its cheaper then the x-e4 has a nicer screen ( a bit larger, higher res, good viewing angles, flipable for vertical portraits, and has auto brightness adjustment for lcd (havent seen that on other mirrorless), the evf is also way better then the one on the x-e4. Also i like the b&w mode for better visibility of peaking and the you can switch between full screen magnification and part of the scresn (picture in picture) i realy like it for my nikon f and m42 lenses!
If one knew nothing about the brands, anyone doing an honest comparison would probably prefer the Canon P over the Leica M3. That’s not to take away from the Leica of course, but the P really has some superior features that make it better.
Sound quality on the last two videos has been absolutely excellent… Great work Greg
Thanks, both outdoors with a simple lav mic
front button focus! who knew? thank you so much for the tip and my thumb thanks you to ... a grateful Canadian
Fuji obviously focussed the X-M5 towards video. Hopefully they will release a parallel version (like the X-H2 series did) which is photo-centric. That is, by adding IBIS, replacing the flippy-swivel screen with a tilt screen, and removing the fan attachment (which is not possible on a tilt screen anyway). Upping the screen resolution would also be nice, but I understand they are building the X-M5 to a price point. I'm on the fence wrt the film sim' dial, and would have preferred a d-pad to the joystick (the d-pad giving 4 extra function buttons ). For the moment, I'll put up with the limitations of the X-M1 for street photography.
Yes, it's a purpose built camera, and I find the X-E4 suits me better.
@@kennethbehrens8874 if the xm5 was “obviously”focused for video it wouldn’t have a full mechanical shutter. It works for stills.
@@Raist3db Yes, of course .. it's a camera. It takes stills .... with mechanical and/or electronic shutter. It's actually a very capable stills camera. However, keep in mind: digital image stabilisation (for video only), microphone direction and noise reduction settings (video only), as well as f-log2, LP mode, and short movie mode (all video only). The above, and the flippy screen, the mic and headphone jacks, and vertical mode for vlogging, target it towards video use. If it was targeted more towards stills, it would have retained the tilt screen of the X-M1. Just my opinions though.
@@kennethbehrens8874 I do see your point, I do think the XM5 is also aimed at some photographers looking for a compact travel or street body. Basically Fuji could have skipped entirely on a hot flash socket and mechanical shutter but they didn't. They are also there for a reason.
I just worry about center of balance, when I was just 2 weeks into ownership of a stock Ninebot Max G30p I had an accident. This happened at a very slow speed as I was passing a person with ear buds who had not acknowledged me. The problem was that I was pulling back on the handlebars while in a slight squating position. I then hit just the slightest bump and the front wheel was in the air in an instant while the rear wheel shot underneath me. After trying to then run behind the scooter I had to literally throw the scooter away off the bike path. It was dragging my right foot on the pavement in an outward facing ankle sprain that then forced me into an almost 3 point drop. I was in this squating postion to absorb bumps etc but won't be using this position again, I think I may have also hit the accelerator. In future I shut off the cruise control thinking I may have popped the front wheel at only 8 mph but I wasn't able to instanly shut it off and this may have caused or added to the accident. My ankle was crazy swollen and now 7 weeks later I am just now getting back to normal.
Good-Day...eh!!! From Canada, Love the spirit of your video. I just orderd the Monorim V5 after first installing the Ulip rear suspension with extra large brakelight and signal lights. For some reason the Signal & Brake lights conflicted with the Ninebot but when I then added another Ulip brand set of signal lights, it all worked as needed including the brake light. This was with the new Signal/Mode selector, the selector that came with the suspension would cause all lights to stop working unlessthe headlamp was turned on. Anyway how did this unit work out with an added rear suspension. I had a wipeout (and now keep Cruise Control OFF) and needless to say can now feel every bump/crack in the roads. The rear Ulip suspension has helped but I think the added front Monorim V5 will really smooth things out
Having front suspension helps a lot. I recommend it.
Thank you so much for this! I'm a student in NSW looking for affordable cameras to use for my major art work. This was incredible. Thank you <3
Great photos. I’m seriously considering one. I already got the Sigma 30mm and 56mm f1.4 for my a6400. This one is 25mm (~35mm fullframe) and it’s manual which could be great for zone/range focusing (street photography).
Those black-and-white photo edits look absolutely awesome Greg 👌
Thanks, it's what I feel more at home with.
ridiculous
No.
According to Gary GGough, he always takes the same photo.
you live in a black an white world. I don't
I unsubscribed from Alax because he offended my sense of ethics. Someone whose name I forget conducted a photoshoot of Marylyn Munroe. There were some photos Marylin didn't want used, but the photographer used them anyway. Alex thought that was OK. Andy Gibb is na former International Landscape Photographer of the Year, so he's up there with Christian Fletcher, Luke Austin and Tony Hewitt. Of those, only CF is active on YT, but he's a bit erratic.
Speed of movement depends on the field of view of the lens.
I point my camera at something, and <click>. Often I don't focus. so-called composition is an art, not a technical requirement. I frame what looks good and suits my intent. "rule of thirds" is nonsense, I have trained myself to disregard it. Camera stability is an artistic choice. Sometimes I hold it stable, sometimes I move it wildly. I like zoom lenses, I can zoom them during exposure. I like to spin the lens during exposure. Since I was diagnosed with AML Leukaemia, my usual go out and shoot kit is an OM Systems OM-5 with 12-45 F4. Not a bag unless I need it for other reasons. Some things I don't renege on. Technically correct exposure. I can, and do, play with it later. Unless I want Dutch tilt or vertically-tapering buildings, the camera must be level side to side AND front to back. Decisions must be seen to be deliberate.
I have the 18-135 plus a very squeaky prime for my X-T10. I have some Fujinon MF lenses.
It's a crying shame there's no filter thread. There's easily space for it.
Not at all. Who needs filters for toy lens/body cap?
Exciting hunt, isn't it? I recall my first experience (northern hemisphere) with the aurora ... very hazy, more emotional than spectacular. I got to try and work and trust in my camera; it enhances the eye. Btw - I prefer the "taking pictures" videos on your channel. Because I can enjoy and learn more. Thank you for sharing.
Consumerism and "gear acquisition syndrome" seem to rule the RUclips roost. All a bit sad really and maybe one day all those folk will realise the next "must have" with its minimal upgrades won't make them better photographers nor will it make them happier. Poorer, yes, but happier, no. Really enjoying your photography content 👏
Really enjoy your content. This one was very good, thank you!!
I had an XA1 and found that the refresh rate of the screen was pretty bad compared to the X70. How does the XM1 compare?
I was thinking today of getting this for my X-M1, but that body doesn't have the easiest to see focus assist like the high red most of us use on later models. An advantage on the X-M1 one in video, is being manual, it won't hunt for focus like it the camera does in auto. It's not a video camera in auto. Switch to manual focus no matter what in video mode. You think some teflon spray would quiet the lens cap?
I'd instead find a clip on lens cap.
Thanks bro
Thanks for putting your intentions in the first 10 seconds. You saved me some time, so I'll spend a bit of it giving you a comment for your trouble (cuz I don't want to watch a video on the S9, from someone who doesn't have it/won't touch it).
I like to be honest and up front....
For once the laying appears to be beneficial and reversed to expectations: they last much longer than Fuji specifies. Awesome review thanks mate!
S9 makes no sense, small body but you are locked into large lenses or the next to useless pancake lens.
18-40...
@@mostlyfinnishlifeeventsand5112 , its step in the right direction, but over priced for what it is, and not mark on the fuji 15-45, which even maintains focus while zooming in or out.
@@pennysteam "and not mark on the fuji 15-45" - IMHO the focal range is far more useful (starts at real UWA compared to the 23mm of the Fuji) than that of the Fuji
If I saw correctly you mentioned the S9 JPEGS are 12 megapixels, even when the sensor is 24 MP. This is not correct if I understood correctly- the S9 can capture 24 MP shots. That said, I would pick the Fuji for being small and I look at it as a street photography camera (I don't normally do video at all).
Yep, it can capture 24mp, like my X-E4. However, an image will only be 24mp if the image is absolutely full of detail (colour, contrast, subject). The info that is stored in an image is only how much it needs to be, so I should have said, 'images are often around 12mp'.
@@GregCarrick I still don't understand. How is the S9 doing anything different here than any other camera in the market with a color filter array? (i.e. not a Foveon sensor).
@@Raist3db it is no different. But people are so fixed on the MP race in sensors that they don't realise a lot of those large MP sensors don't make for larger files.
@@GregCarrick I still trying to understand why you say it only effectively yields 12MP. I have yet to see how we get there from 24 MP. And when shooting RAW I sure see larger files from higher MP count cameras when shooting uncompressed lossless raws. So still not sure how we get from the 24MP to 12MP.
@@Raist3db Any camera can get from 24MP to 12MP. You misquote me by saying my words were 'it only effectively yields 12MP', when I said 'normal jpgs coming out of them are about 12MP'. Like any camera, it can do more, especially if set to fine rather than normal, but expecting every image to be the full MP count of 24MP is not realistic. You seem to be stuck on this point. Bear in mind that I had just finished talking about it's ability to produce 96MP images. Shooting in RAW is another thing altogether which was never in my review, so bringing that up is irrelevant. I think I've explained this as clearly as I can, so I'll close my responses here.
Great discussion point mate. I've just finished reviewing the XM5 and agree that the low res screen is one of the biggest fails in this design. G
