  • I took the lens off my 100 year old Kodak Vest Pocket Model B camera and put it on my GFX medium format digital.
Can a single element lens one century old still make acceptable images when coupled with modern digital technology?
I limited my GFX camera to shoot the way the old Kodak bellows camera did - I restricted the shutter speed to 1/30 sec, stuck to 200 iso to emulate film, and used the very primitive aperture control built into the old Kodak lens to control exposure. I also shot in monochrome. Photos taken at Maroondah Dam, Healesville, Australia.
My Son-in-law 3D printed a mount that would carry the small pancake Kodak lens on the front of a focussing helicoid. That gave me a focus range of 30cm to infinity.
I ended up quite impressed with the quality of the images I was getting from the old single element lens. The photos in this video are jpg's straight out of camera. No cropping, I've reduced the size to suit RUclips, which means the original images are better than what you see here.
Have you tried an old Kodak lens on your digital camera? Let me know your experiences in the comments.
