@@83442handle I wouldn't be surprised if a good chunk of it came from the barbenheimer meme. Where Warner Brothers decided to release Barbie around the same time as Oppenheimer as a "fuck you" to Nolan, but then it inadvertently ended up creating a ton of free marketing for both from memes. Kind of reminds me of what happened with Animal Crossing and Doom Eternal. I have family up in Pennsylvania so it's definitely not my first time going to the state, but as soon as I saw that King of Prussia was getting a 1570 screening I felt like I had to try to go there because by the time I started going to the theater everything already switched over to digital projection so it's nice to be able to go see a movie protected from film. Plus Maryland got robbed when it comes to IMAX screens, we only have the smaller multiplex style IMAX screens outside of the state science center. And they aren't projecting movies there, usually just IMAX documentaries. So I'm glad I have the opportunity to experience both the giant screen, and the film.
@@83442handle oh I forgot to mention, we're also going for an 11:10 p.m. showing just because that was the only one where I could get decent seats in row D. I ended up scoring D12 and D13.
@@chrisfratz D is the best row. You're a bit over too much but at least you are on the railing so you can get in and out for the bathroom easy. Just crazy how you can't even get decent tickets for this movie 3 weeks from now on a weekday. I remember watching Dark Knight Rises maybe 4 days after it came out at that theater in 70mm in the best seat(like D17) and there was tons of room around me from lack of people. Last time I remember there was insane IMAX demand was the original Dark Knight in 2008 as that movie was really popular.
I live near the IMAX theater they just built in Pooler, Georgia (it’s really really close to the size of this one, 23.2m by 30.7m), and it’s one of two GT auditoriums in our state. They don’t have a film projector (theater itself is a “small” family owned and they probably couldn’t justify the cost of the film projector on top of the dual 4K projectors like in this video with how few films are released on film now). They do an outstanding job of taking care of their facilities though, which unfortunately the other GT IMAX in our state can not say… That one is owned by the Regal Cinemas (theater chain) at the Mall of Georgia and it does have the 70mm IMAX but Regal cheaped out and only put one of the 4K digital projectors in it (apparently that’s something regal has done with most of if not all of their IMAX theaters). That makes it incapable of showing digital only movies in the full imax aspect ratio, on a screen that’s significantly smaller (18.1m by 24.8m), in an auditorium that isn’t in as good of a shape as pooler (and doesn’t have recliners). So would have been pick either one of the biggest screens in the world in a nicer auditorium but it’s digital (still 1.43:1 though) or see it in a worse auditorium but it’s on film (but on a smaller screen)… No clear choice for movies like Oppenheimer, definitely a clear choice for digital only films like Dune though, since Pooler is the only one of the two that can do digital 1.43:1)
Watching Oppenheimer in imax 70mm on release night with a packed audience was a truly amazing experience. Will never watch it again because the experience isn’t repeatable.
There used to be 3 IMAX theatres in Ontario, Canada alongside the Mississauga and Vaughan locations. The Cinesphere, the world’s permanent IMAX theatre, at the Ontario place has been temporarily closed since fall last year due construction around the Ontario Place grounds. Hopefully it reopens late this year as planned.
I STILL fondly remember seeing some of the early 'documentary' IMAX presentations at Cinesphere when I was a kid. It was amazing how the First Person ROLLER COASTER footage actually PHYSICALLY made your stomach feel weird, just like if you were actually on a real Roller Coaster!
I watched Oppenheimer in imax 1570 on Friday July 28, at 11pm. Incredible that the house was still sold out for a movie a week into its run and at such a late showing. True testament to what Nolan has achieved
We actually have a 1570mm IMAX screen here measuring 21x29 metres, so along with the one in Melbourne I believe this is the second one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The theatre called Keong Mas (Golden Snail) is located in a theme park owned by the Government of Indonesia, so the movies on show are documentaries and educational topics for students. Really wish that movies like Oppenheimer can be shown there in the future so us mere mortals can experience true IMAX. Keep up the fantastic content and cheers from your neighbour 🇮🇩
Just seen Oppenheimer at the BFI IMAX in London, one of the 3 in the UK showing a 1570 print. The visual experience is totally overwhelming in the most sublime way imaginable.
@@DesignedbyKirk BFI IMAX well worth checking out. I lived in London in the 1970s when all cinemas had only one screen except for the Academy 1,2 and 3 in Oxford St which introduced me to arthouse and European movies. I first worked at the Classic Cinema in Piccadilly Circus which had previously been a "Circlorama" cinema in the 1960s. When I worked there (as trainee manager) the auditorium was still in a circular layout and the projection room, (which had previously contained 11 projectors), still surrounded the circular auditorium. Easy Rider had it's British premiere here in 1969 and ran for over 9 months, running continuous sessions over 10 hours every day. I saw a 1570 3D presentation at the BFI IMAX way back in 2000 when my friend was technical manager for BFI. I was lucky to get a private behind the scenes look at the 1570 projection system. I lived in Melbourne 1987-1997 (no IMAX then but my local was the Astor which was always a special treat - and luckily still is today after facing demolition a few years back). I was in Melbourne again in Jan 2020 when I saw 1917 at Museum IMAX. The trailer for Tenet was in 1570 but 1917 was in digital IMAX, which was great but a little disappointing watching the picture shrink down from 1570 to digital IMAX. It's heartening to see Melbourne has kept the 1570 projector and disappointing that our new IMAX in Wellington (Lower Hutt, NZ) is not 1570 capable.
It makes me sad to think that these cinemas and this format appear to slowly be on their way out. I got to experience The Dark Knight in the full on 70mm IMAX format along with a fair few other films and it was absolutely incredible. That cinema has since closed down (Millennium Point in Birmingham UK). My local cinema has an “IMAX” screen but it’s 4K and nowhere near as impressive size-wise. It’s very sad to see these disappear over time.
Millennium point was our go to until it closed down. It was either that or printworks in Manchester. Nowadays the BFI in London is probably the best shout
@@phillipbanes5484 On the contrary, film was shot in 4k or better resolution like 5 decades ago. The vast, vast majority of the world can't stream lossless 4k footage yet. But you are right, the end is very near. I expect another 10 years or so.
There's a 70mm IMAX theater in San Antonio Texas where my parents live, I'm seriously thinking about flying across the United States just to watch this movie.
IMAX destroyed its brand by dumping digital 2K theaters with IMAX name all over the place. Now that I know IMAX doesn't mean IMAX 15 70mm ... what a massive rip off I have been duped. Now I really wonder what a FULL resolution film would look like.
Here in Australia, there is no other IMAX co-branding out there, so it's quite clear that IMAX is a different experience, totally worth it in my opinion
Film makers like Cameron and Nolan, know what it takes to innovate the movie going experience. I saw way of water in imax 3D and was absolutely blown away. 70 mm with a movie from Nolan has me very excited.
Absolutely incredible. What an experience this might have been, the process looks so tough and yet passionate. Really wish if i could attend one Nolan movie in a 1570 IMAX film
Watched Oppenheimer at an IMAX screen (1:90 format) and it was the best immersive experience I have ever had.. I can only imagine what would it feel like to watch it in 15/70mm
I've been to two true-IMAX-sized screens in my lifetime. One was in Ontario, California, near where I lived, which I took for-granted until I moved away. The other was in New York, where I was with my brother for a couple of days, and we watched Avatar in IMAX 3D. Not normally a big fan of 3D, but that was an amazing thing to watch in 3D, let along, with IMAX. Last IMAX experience I had in Cali was The Dark Night--Nolan, of course, back in his early IMAX days. Also amazing!
I recently saw Mission Impossible in double 4K laser at IMAX Melbourne. Although a fantastic image and very clear, the image didn't reach the very top or bottom of the screen. I thought that this might be a limitation of the 4K setup there. I hope that when I get to see Oppenheimer there in 15/70 (if I can ever get tickets) that the picture fills the screen entirely. Are there any comments on this from those in the know that have visited Melbourne? Is the 4K image slightly smaller than the 15/70 or do neither of them fill the screen all the way to the four edges?
I went to a 15/70 Oppenheimer screening in IMAX Melb and can confirm that the relevant scenes do indeed fill up the entire screen. It was legitimately one of the best cinema experiences I’ve ever had in my entire life, anyone who is calling this film a ‘snoozefest’ either saw it in a shitty cinema or were expecting non-stop explosions for three hours lol
@@TheNikolaki8 there is no 70mm IMAX where I live (boo hoo!) So I wasn't able to see unnecessary nudity in the form of Florence's bwuubs (bawl!) But those are now Nolan's cheap gimmicks to get gullible folks go gaga (sob!)
So this is where it gets a little bit confusing and technical with the "IMAX" terminology. Mission impsossible expands to at most 1.9:1 or 16:9, which is the full width of the sensor available filmed digitally. This would take up approximately 70% of the full IMAX Melbourne screen. Movies like Dune, filmed in Opengate on the Alexa 65, are digital films, that also do take up the full 4:3 screen, alongside IMAX film prints 1570MM like Interstellar, Dunkirk, Oppenheimer etc... So what you experienced wasn't necessarily a limitation of the IMAX screen, but more so the camera the movie was shot on. Most movies can only display at 2.39:1, which is less than 16 by 9, the graphic I showed at 3:45 perfectly showcases this!
Bought a premium seat (the last row) for my first ever 1570 imax and now I lowkey regret not choosing the middle zone instead. Still hella excited! Would love to be able to catch inception, interstellar or dunkirk again on 1570 someday here. Cant wait to be there already!
seems like you saw it in "Digital IMAX" - yes the original 70mm IMAX used film (Like Oppenheimer at the Melbourne IMAX) and the screen was bigger. "True IMAX" is called 1570mm IMAX because the film is 70mm wide (as opposed to conventional 35mm film) and it has 15 perforations per frame as opposed to 4 perforations per frame for 35mm film. I had a similar experience as you some years ago. I had seen original 1570 IMAX over 20 years ago and about 10 years ago went to an IMAX cinema again, thinking that digital IMAX would be so much better than 70mm film IMAX. I was so disappointed. And the thing is the exhibitors, while promoting "the all new Digital IMAX" didn't really tell people that the picture on the screen was actually smaller.
Thanks for making this video. I also got to see Oppenheimer in 1570 film and I believe I saw you filming this video (I was the one who asked if you were also a tourist)
I heard about that, bit of a shame, but it can happen, film isn't as simple as clicking a play button unfortunately, and with it becoming rarer and rarer these days, there are less people trained out there to do it all.
Ya I can't imagine what the issue was 40 mins left in the movie. Possible power interruption or brain wrap (when the film wraps around device controlling the platter RPMs) perhaps. I heard it only took about 10mins to rectify so it couldn't have been anything too serious.
But with all due respect, will an average cinemagoer identify between a digital format Vs. Film? They can for sure understand High Frame Rate formats, but 70mm and 1570mm? I don't think so. All they care about is the story and some action & value for money. 🤔
Fair question, it’s one of the main reasons I wanted to make this video in the first place. To show people out there interested, what the difference is. And it’s incredible when you sit down to watch it. To me, the fact that they’ve already sold so many tickets for one month of screenings, (with only one screen in the theatre), demonstrates how many people love the format
The average cinemagoer probably hasn't experienced both. But once one does, you can see where there are differences. Film is warmer, more natural, and higher resolution.
Something that almost anyone will notice is the aspect ratio. In smaller formats, you're literally going to be missing parts of the background details. Obviously, Nolan would be cognizant of people not being able to see the full frame, so the details that are cut out by smaller aspect ratios won't be totally necessary, but they'll still exist.
Man, there used to be five IMAX 15/70 theaters in Mexico, of which, three have already closed down... Two remain, but play only documentaries, whilst one of the two main and largest cinema chains in Mexico, Cinemex, has just opened three IMAX laser theaters in Mexico City. Where I live, Monterrey, a museum called: Papalote Museo del Niño Monterrey, is currently playing Hollywood features, and there's where I saw Oppenheimer, the very first C. Nolan film I see, at least in real IMAX laser. Great video, man. Hope to stay in touch.
I've been told by their team that the opening hundreds of frames are "fillers" to accomodate for handling and threading the film, plus having a visual on the projector to test footage, prior to audiences entering the theatre. Gloves can be seen used in the initial splicing process.
Incredible. I had no idea that the projectionist had to stitch the film together after receiving 🤯. I love being able to see 70mm films but it's a real bummer when you are at the mercy of whoever AMC comes up with to project the picture.
I'm fortunate enough to have one of the 70mm IMAX screens here in Edmonton and just saw Oppenheimer on it on Saturday. What an incredible cinematic experience! Highly recommend anyone to do the same while they can. And honestly, I wish I could see Fantasia 2000 in IMAX 15/70. As a Disney fan, that'd be one hell of an experience.
LOL I live 20 mins from there. I saw Dark Knight..Dunkirk...etc in 70mm over the years. It's great but you guys are nuts driving that far. I saw people saying they were going to get on a plane to watch IMAX. And now know why all the showing are sold out for weeks. I just don't understand why the demand is for this film but all of the other Nolan movies we didnt see this crazy influx of out of staters coming in. IMAX has been out for a long time and I am not sure why people just caught on in 2023.
That sure would be amazing! Absolutely worth every penny for the long drive!
Amazing - Can’t wait to see this movie!
Definitely worth seeing in IMAX for sure!
Watching Oppenheimer in imax 70mm on release night with a packed audience was a truly amazing experience. Will never watch it again because the experience isn’t repeatable.
The movie was amazing on a normal screen , I can't imagine how good the movie would look in this screen
Absolutely! Just because it's shot on IMAX film, doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed elsewhere!
I drove from Washington to Langley, BC to see it in 70mm. It was absolutely worth it!
so glad you loved it!

We saw Dune 2 in IMAX 1570 in Melbourne last night and were blown away. It really is the best format for a movie of this sort.
Amazing Video! Thanks for sharing.
you're very welcome!
Still don't understand why people hate Nolan. He's the pioneer of the usage of IMAX for commercial cinema

I watched Oppenheimer in imax 1570 on Friday July 28, at 11pm. Incredible that the house was still sold out for a movie a week into its run and at such a late showing. True testament to what Nolan has achieved
100%! what a show it was!
Don't forget about the one in Auckland New Zealand
Auckland IMAX has digital dual laser projection but not film projection
Just seen Oppenheimer at the BFI IMAX in London, one of the 3 in the UK showing a 1570 print. The visual experience is totally overwhelming in the most sublime way imaginable.
I've heard about that theatre quite a lot recently, got to check it out some time!
The good news is that as digital technology improves, we'll get superior quality. It's just going to take a few decades.
Millennium point was our go to until it closed down. It was either that or printworks in Manchester. Nowadays the BFI in London is probably the best shout

There's a 70mm IMAX theater in San Antonio Texas where my parents live, I'm seriously thinking about flying across the United States just to watch this movie.
It’s all sold out. Unless you want to sit in the edge and front area
I saw it yesterday!! The print looks GREAT!!! It's at Rivercenter so you gotta pay for parking but get a validation for 3 hours free!!
Nice, hope you loved it!
Very grateful to have a 15/70mm IMAX cinema in my home city.
IMAX Digital (2K), bad move IMAX Corporation!
Film makers like Cameron and Nolan, know what it takes to innovate the movie going experience. I saw way of water in imax 3D and was absolutely blown away. 70 mm with a movie from Nolan has me very excited.
Absolutely!
I have my tickets for Oppenheimer 15/70mm IMAX at AMC Universal City in LA.
nice! I'm seeing it on Wednesday, very excited
Correction: there is also a cinema in sydney which also displays true 70mm film called the Ritz cinema at Ranwick
Yes but that’s not IMAX 70MM, I.e 15/70MM film. There are plenty of other theatres in Melbourne that display films including this one in 70mm

Both wonderful experience!
Crazy how many of the screens are in Canada considering the population
Quite a lot of venues indeed!
IMAX is a Canadian company. That's why.
Saw it in 15/70 in Vaughan cinema in Toronto. Amazing experience... a must-see film for those who have access
Save your dough. Poopenheimer is a snoozefest.
@gertrudfischer271 it's hyped up tripe.
Such an amazing video, Kirk!!!! Loved it! So incredible to see the behind the scenes. Congratulations!!!! 👏🏻

Bought a premium seat (the last row) for my first ever 1570 imax and now I lowkey regret not choosing the middle zone instead. Still hella excited! Would love to be able to catch inception, interstellar or dunkirk again on 1570 someday here. Cant wait to be there already!
i went to see this in "IMAX" and was like 'wait, i remember this being at least 2x as big as a kid'
and now i don't know if i've ever seen tru IMAX :(
Might be worth trying to watch it now for sure!
seems like you saw it in "Digital IMAX" - yes the original 70mm IMAX used film (Like Oppenheimer at the Melbourne IMAX) and the screen was bigger.
I got to watch this in film yesterday at this cinema, hands down the best cinematic experience!
And there's sydney still building our IMAX cinema 7 years running. SMH

In my experience film is film and digital cant match film
let's hope the format makes a comeback in theatres around the world!
In Vaughn Ontario, Oppenheimer 70mm IMAX film premiere showing stopped with 40 min left due to some technical difficulty. Complex systems
That’s a shame, and a testament to the ambitious nature of this film. More of a reflection on the theater and their staff but it’s a tall order
believe me when you've seen it you see the difference.
i assume you haven't seen a 1570 film projected directly to the screen. you will be fascinated if you have the opportunity sometime.
Hope to stay in touch.
no gloves? human hands have been destroying prints for generations and i see we haven't learned any lessons. buy some damn gloves FFS
There's no need, because the film he's handling isn't the actual movie. It's blank film added to the beginning and end for the purpose of threading.
I've been told by their team that the opening hundreds of frames are "fillers" to accomodate for handling and threading the film, plus having a visual on the projector to test footage, prior to audiences entering the theatre. Gloves can be seen used in the initial splicing process.
