Went from X-H1 to Zf. Was never unhappy with image quality out of crop sensor, even in lower light concerts. I really just switched for the autofocus. It's a lot better, full stop. That said, I still use Fuji, and I've found that its files integrate well into a workflow with the Zf. In other words, it's not like one camera's images are glaringly different in output, most of the time. Although of course the full framer does pull ahead in low light.
Anyway, I'm not selling all my Fuji gear though I am paring down. I think I'll keep Fuji for the long end since I have the 50-140mm f2.8 zoom, and it's good enough for my purposes to not require spending $2600 on the Z mount 70-200mm f2.8. Yes, I'm aware of the light gathering difference, and I don't care.
Both systems can coexist in a guy's bag. Is what I'm saying.

Thanks for a great video. I agree fully with you about the auto ISO and lack of aperture rings on the Nikkor lenses. As I don't use manual focusing I map the focus ring to be an aperture ring, and whilst it doesn't have any click stops I find this a very acceptable solution. I pre-ordered the Zf before it was released here in the UK, so I have had it for more than a year. I began my amateur digital experience with a Nikon D300S which I had for 7 years before it was stolen. I replaced that with a full frame Nikon Df but when mirrorless cameras actually became usable I switched to Olympus and then to Fujifilm. I used the Fujifilm X-T3 and X-T4 bodies for some time but when the Nikon Zfc was released I couldn't resist and it became my camera of choice. But I also wanted a full frame camera for the reasons you covered. The Nikon Zf has become the camera I carry with me almost everywhere I go and I love it. The build quality is exceptional and the picture quality is fantastic. The tactile controls are an utter joy! My first camera back in the early 1980s was a Nikon FE and I wanted to recover that experience. An excellent review and I agree with everything you say both positive and negative (and the comments regarding the price of a Leica). I think the Nikon Zf is the best camera I have ever owned, and I own over 60 combined film and digital cameras.

I believe the comparison between a lower end Fuji camera and the Nikon Zf is somewhat unfair. I have the XT5 and it is a wonderful camera. Paired with Fuji or Viltrox lenses, it has the ability to produce wonderful images. If it is paired with the Viltrox 27mm 1.2, it captures great low light pictures. That said, I also shoot with a Nikon D610 and a Nikon Z50. I will soon be purchasing a Zf so I can continue using my Nikon lenses, and put my D610 to pasture. But I’m definitely not getting rid of the XT5 anytime soon. It is a wonderful camera that provides a great vintage experience, albeit with modern hardware. To me, it’s the best of both worlds. The Zf is finally the camera that got me to jump to mirrorless. I'm a professional photographer and I've been loathe to start that journey because of how much extra work it entails.
Or at least that's what I thought. And sure there are definitely some growing pains associated with learning an entirely new system.
But just over a week in using my Zf now and I've found it's actually more joy than work. Joy at seeing just how incredible this camera is. Nikon put so much *thought* into how it's crafted. It's sensor isn't too much for the internals. The autofocus system is other-worldly, seriously, there isn't a camera at the price point that can keep up with it (I think it would even trade blows with most Sonys favorably). The dials are a blast to use when I'm shooting slow moving things or just having fun and shooting street, it brings the tactile nature of cameras back to front and center. The 24mp sensor might not win the award for highest resolution but it's utterly brilliant, low light performance is astonishing. I don't even feel the need to run any NR passes on ISO 6400-8000 and even at 12,800 I have fully *usable* images. With all of that above said, I would have been happy and totally unsurprised if Nikon had just thrown a standard video kit on it and called it a day. Nope, they went with 10bit recording and some truly stellar video quality. All mashed into a portable camera, which, while not lightweight, is *far* lighter than DSLR bodies. I always thought I'd be compromising with my first mirrorless. I haven't found a single area where I'm wishing for something more -- this camera is nothing short of astonishing. The fact they did this on a retro-styled camera is just wild to me.
Prior to this one of my favorite cameras of all time was the D500, another camera that really has no place in the grander lineup that Nikon is known for. Turns out, I tend to like the dark horse cameras. I know that the Z6IIIs, Z8s, and the more standard bodies from Fuji and Sony are going to get a lot of attention, but IMO the Zf is one of the best cameras ever made when you consider the value it provides. It has breathed new life into my photography and allowed me to express myself artistically in a way I wasn't sure was possible -- it's just so easy for the camera to match the vision I have in my head when I go to snap an image, and the hardware does what I want *every* time. It doesn't miss.
My AF system is set up to standard autofocus with a narrower back button autofocus. This lets me override the AF if I want to zero in on a region of an image. And that punch to zoom is also such a stellar addition and even works on MF lenses. It's just a really, seriously, complete camera that takes stunning images.

If one is so impressed by AF performance and low light capability, why just not going for an Z6 or Z7 series..? For me it is just some itch to scratch after a new gear is released imho. II bought a brand new Z FF body some time ago with some lenses and even if the IQ was nice, there were other so annoying things with the handling that slowed me so much down especially when shutting professionally. I sold everything still in warranty after 1 year of use and got back to Fuji. More than a year since that, I never regretted it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts anyway.

One doesn't have to think this. It is simply an objective truth. Nikon Zf has better IBIS, better AF, better sensor (clean dynamic range), better lenses (minus aperture ring), better build quality, and better manual focus experience. Fujifilm is lighter and has slightly better battery life. Its dial layout makes more sense and its film simulations are useful for JPEG shooters. You can also use Instax printers with Fuji X bodies to print photos (very useful for events and networking with models/clients). The Fuji app is more reliable than Nikon's. But these pros only apply to a specific group of shooters. However, Fujifilm users are on average better photographers than Nikon. If you are a street photographer and likes to go on photo walks with other photographers, the Fuji community is great.

You will soon discover that auto ISO in Nikon is not the same concept as in Fujifilm. Nikon's feature should have been named "ISO assist" or something :). If you feel the need to go back and forth between auto and manual ISO in Nikon then you are probably still thinking like a Fujifilm shooter. There is no "auto" ISO in the Zf. It is always manual even if the so called "auto ISO" is turned on. The only thing that auto ISO does is increase your ISO over your current manual setting and up to the configured maximum if and only if the latter is greater than the former and the shutter speed drops lower than its configured minimum. Now how often do you change your mind about how high the camera is allowed to bring its ISO without asking you? Practically never. Yeah we all agree that a hardware switch for auto ISO would have been nice but think about it for minute and you will find that adding an A position in the ISO dial like Fujifilm does, cannot work simply because auto ISO in Nikon does not mean "not manual". So you still need the ISO dial even when ISO is set to auto. Think about it.

I’m having trouble with this because I was a Fuji shooter. I rarely, if ever, shoot anything auto, but my confusion is coming in when it comes down to setting this up for my use case. I shoot portraits with flash so my settings rarely change, iso never. But when I’m out and about I sometimes will set my x100v to auto shutter or auto iso when I’m with my kids. If I were to set the iso to c in this manner and then switch it back to a set number when shooting portraits, will it continue to work in manual only at the set number and not change? I’m sorry, but the iso has been so hard for me to grasp. 🤦🏽‍♂️
