- Dropping the motor in! 2015 2.3l EcoBoost with Esslinger kit / T5 manual trans in our '79 Mustang Coupe "EgoBruise" using AJE's K-member and motor mounts. Direct fit? Ehhhh lol

I’m loving this build. In a world where everyone is Coyote swapping you sir thought outside the box….. or Outside The Fox? 👍😂
I see what you did there lol
Cool build.. Seems like a lot work for a 4cyl. I put a 460 in one with stock k member. Brake booster. Starter on homemade motor. Mounts. No welder. No internet. Back in the 1990s
Making my 302 rebuild seem a lot easier! Thanks for the inspiration! Keep up the awesome content!
Underdog for the win!!! The 2.3L Ecoboost in that Fox is gonna be a blast. 310hp stock... will make this thing feel wicked on the Street. Can't wait till the next upload. Love the channel. Merry Christmas!
Thanks man! Merry Christmas!
Awesome video Mike. Love the Egobruise series so far. Keep up the great work !
Appreciate that man
Congrats! Good to see an “ ego boost” conquering the setbacks. Nice progress and motivator. Good to see I’m not alone working on the Foxes during the holidays….balance between obsession and passion LoL. Happy Holidays!
Yessir! Appreciate that. Happy holidays
I made an A-Frame that sits on the fender strut tower frame to hold the motor up while removing the K-frame and swaybar. I then lowered the motor onto a cart. Then I used the engine hoist to lift the front of the car and roll it out. I also had the rear of the car sitting on jackstands on the rear pinch welds in front of the rear tires. Makes the nose of the car very light without the motor and tranny. I put the motor back in this way also, so easy compared to stabbing it in from the top, specially when you're doing it yourself.
Nice idea man! I thought about...but didnt think stabbing this girl in would be so difficult lol
Sweet build, the stock eco boost dont take a lot of beating. They are fun little motors and cars tho! Keep up the work!!
2.3 ecoboost is going to be a fun car. subbed and waiting for updates to the build.
This is a cool and exciting build!
Thanks man!
really glad for you after the " mating " ritual with motor / adaptor / tranny ( etc. ) hybrid . it was enlightening , for ( not just ) myself . Australia , doesn't have the ' fox bod " , but many of us have uses , for the Esslinger components . We would ( either use a "Limey " Ford / Jap.bod ) setup . Your insights are very helpful , it's mid 2023 , we're just in autumn ( your spring ) this is ( my best time of year / enjoy your spring , best wishes c.s.
Love the build, makes me excited after deployment for my gen 3 coyote. I'm glad I tubed the front though. Forget that engine hoist crap
Yeah sucks lol
Just to avoid project stahl, don’t forget you have the proper manual brake pedal.
SN95 bell housing and input shaft will give you another inch.
Offset rack bushings and a few washers between the engine mounts and block may give you the clearance you need for the rack and avoid the need for rack spacers and custom steering shafts and retain your steering geometry.
Great project and info so far👍🏾
Appreciate it. The pedal assembly is for power, came from a power brake mustang. Your are 100% correct to, as others mentioned that an SN95 T5, and or input shaft along with bell would fit. Interesting though about the washers on the block to engine mount plates...I didnt even think if that and how that would actually lift the engine up. I measured and offset bushings alone would not be enough, but with some washers....hmmm. Im thinking now! Appreciate that Alan. I thought about lowering the rack, moving the mounts aft, etc, etc, etc, but never thought about actually raising the motor with washers between the motor mount plates. Appreciate the food for thought.
@@HOUSEOFDULA I’m sorry I short spoke. The original pedal assembly had manual brakes. After you pulled it out and had them side by side on the bench you noticed and commented that you probably could have just pulled the cross shaft and inserted the power brake pedal onto the original hanger (which is true) but you had already cleaned and painted the new assembly. I was noting that you still have the correct geometry manual pedal that you could paint up and just pull the cross shaft and put in. As light as the car is going to be and with the Cadillac calipers it should give a really good pedal feel and give you lots of clearance in the engine bay. I have an 85 GT which has a mix of 79-83 nuances and 84-88 nuances so you get to learn interchangeable things fast as the parts are drying up. Wishing you continued success.
@@alanhill5513 Gotcha Alan! Yeah once the assembly cage and unit is out its easy to see how simple it would be to swap brake pedals. My 86 GT seems more bolt-on ready for 87-2004 stuff, the 79's been odd here and there lol. Manual brakes would very likely work great. My big ol Torino runs manual, and its setup right with the correct size master cylinder. These cadillac brembos are HUGE for such a small light car lol Keeping the manual pedal and adapter off the 79 for this. I really think hydroboost is not necessary, and you might be right, no booster at all would look cleaner. I wonder how the manual pedal and 1" master would work with these brembos?
Looks good. Maximum Motorsports makes a nice extending steering shaft
This is going to be bad ass Mike! I actually like the look of the OE air box. Cool build brother 👍👍
Thanks man! I do to. Has that OEM look and feel, which oddly Im after. Even looking for the engine cover that most take off ;)
@@HOUSEOFDULA Nice!!
Looks great man! Ive been following this. Getting close now! Good Luck!
Apprecaite it!
If you decide to run a catch can... I recommend you do it the next time the motor is out. One of the fittings (the crankcase one I believe) is dang near hidden under the intake manifold. I have a video of installing on my wife's eco. This is going to be so baller. Congrats on the milestone.
Thanks. Yeah, good point, I'll have to pull it all anyway for paint anyway. Ive been looking at the radium baffle and external catch can.
Looking good Mike!
This past year I rebuilt and swapped a 1986 2.3L Turbo into my 1989 Notch... I did a fully built axle with 31 spline axles, Torsen T2-R Diff, Cobra Brakes front a rear, weld on fender flares, doing front mount intercooler, with an EMS should make about 380hp when I'm done. The 5 lug conversion lets me run 17X9s in the front, I'm probably going to switch to 19X10s in the rear with the biggest Autocross tires I can fit. I did blow off the PVC valve which sprayed oil over the engine and created a small engine fire at 15psi. So I have to rewire and replace a few things, I'm going to TiG weld an AN fitting on the valve cover and make a custom oil catch can to drain into the sump which should solve my minor fire problem.
Your project was something I had considered so it's interesting to see, even with the old 2.3 Turbo, I had issues with clutch cables, motor mounts, transmission tunnel clearance, I had to notch and reweld the K-member to clear a larger racing oil pan too. It's always cool to see your trouble shooting and solutions makes me feel good about my struggles and progress.
Yeah if you think you can do a unique swap without any struggles thats just not realistic lol. Your project sounds really neat. The 2.3's have a crazy cult following and put down some serious power with the right mods. Luckily circle track and indy guys helped pave the way, and supply folks with nice racing parts for that 2.3l So, respect to you for putting in a turboed 2.3 in your notch. Also interesting about your clutch issue, (what trans) and also curious to where you bought the weld on flares. Thanks for the comment man!
@@HOUSEOFDULA I'm using the stock 2.3 NA T-5 which is it's own unique T-5.
With my current combination, the racing pan made the clutch cable impossible to route normally so I had to make a custom bracket and set the spacing properly to make the clutch work. I got lucky with my first attempt and it bolts to the bellhousing via the cable hole.
My plan for next winter is to use an adapter for the WC T-5 Bell housing, and I'm going to get a TKX trans with the V8 5.0 Bellhousing, and hydraulic clutch. With the adapter I should be able to use the V8 flywheel and Clutch with this combination. I'm sure this is where I'll run into some more problems like you are experiencing.
My flares were from SS Worx
ssworxs.com/shop/ford/mustang-1979-1993-foxbody/ford-mustang-fender-flares-models-79-93/
I haven't finished the body work, but the flares are welded in... I was a bit too aggressive in the rear, the fronts are about perfect but I had the 17X9's when I started the front flares so I was able to better reference... but this works out for my autocross application and the available wheel and tire sizes.
I want to work on my (minor) projects, but I've got about 7" of snow on the ground. I have to wire up some tweeters, then as soon as the roads aren't crap I'm going to a local junkyard and picking up some GT fog lights to slap on my V6. I already have the switch and the relay, just need the assemblies and the bulbs. A few days I put on a new bumper after a minor collision from someone merging into me, that looks great. Primed matte black on a white SN95 doesn't look too terrible.
I can hear it in your voice that your a proud papa lol.. And yes you should be I did a 4 to 8 1988 coupe build and it was a ton of work but came out awesome. Keep posting please.
Appreciate that!
You will hear frustration typically before proud ;)
I find the chings and chimes of tools flying best for hiding choice words from the kids.😉
And you get to use the MGW again. That’s a big plus. Bought one after watching your video and absolutely love mine.
Held on to it for this build. Still by far by favorite shifter.
Do you know a good machine shop here around ft Worth?
Hey bro love the content. I don't know if this but the location of the shifter on a t5 tailshaft housing on a camaro is pushed farther back. I think you should look into it.keep up the good. work
I have had this idea since they came out with the new 2.3L, except I want it in a different fox body (Fairmont Futura Sport Coupe) and would use the new 6 speed
After 30 years of tinkering with Fox bodies I can say--without mentioning any names--that there are very stout k-members that are durable enough for any type of use, and there are lighter duty k-members that are adequate for exclusively drag racing. It all depends on the intended use of the vehicle.
I appreciate it. Which does AJE lie in? 1st or 2nd mentioned? would like to know your thoughts.
@@HOUSEOFDULA K-members run the entire spectrum, from USA-made that will handle the loads of road racing, to copycat designs made overseas. I only have first hand experience with Griggs Racing and Maximum Motorsports, both more on the heavy duty side. A lighter piece may be adequate depending on engine weight, suspension loads, etc. but I would occasionally check the welds when you're underneath doing maintenance.
Nice progress! Volvo electric power steering pump for your steering? I’m using the original 4 cylinder brake booster with cobra brakes on all 4 corners on my coupe it has plenty of stopping power I have to be careful not to lock the front up, just imagine stopping with your brembo and V8 booster set up. I think I mentioned that the brake booster would hit the intake at the time of the sell.
Dude you are so lucky to be wearing shorts at Xmas. Cold snow and ice where I’m at
Lucky AND sucks. Way warm for even here. Usually, its cold. I think we hit record over Xmas, was like 85 Christmas day. Sucked, felt like easter or something.
Just picked up a 91 Fox 'vert... catchin up with ya bud!
lol right on!
A load leveler would have helped. A trick I do is jack the rear of the car way up high, then the engine/trans kinda go straight back and in, instead of down and back. It works.
YES, its on my list of more tools I need! Jacking the rear of the car way is is a great idea too
This is a really cool build, at first I wanted a lightning fox , because I had a triton 🔱 sn95 now having an ecoboost it would be really cool to have a eco fox 🦊
Thanks man! I agree, just fun to be different
@@HOUSEOFDULA it would be so cool to see what type of mileage it gets, while still being able to hoon a little. Sounds like the road car it should’ve been back in the days when they first had the 2.3L
You could use a 2003 Cobra Mustang hydro boost brake booster.
I use an engine leveler. Much easier when alone.
I'm gonna try to put a 1.0l ecoboost in my 93 2.3l mustang
You could also use an SN95 T5/bellhousing. That'll move the shifter back an inch!
Man that's a great idea, are the v6 models further back just like the sn95 gt? If so that would be even better as they are everywhere for a v6
@@centraltexasfoxbodies yes they are. You could even use just an SN95 input shaft , they’re like $100. And yes, the V6 and V8 bellhousing are literally identical aside from the 3.8 and 5.0 casting identifiers.
Man I know, and this means I need wither to swap input shafts or swap T5s as well. Everything moves back. An SN95 T5 would fit much better, Im looking for one, but honestly the shifter up 2" is barely noticable from the driver seat, WITH a longer handle. So up in the air still on this one.
@@HOUSEOFDULA the only draw back is modifying the trans tunnel to look right and if you ever wanted to put a factory center console it won't fit. I'd be searching for a later t5 also so it would fit better but that's me.
You had the k out...you could have slid the engine under the car, dragged it up, (I used a 4x4 fence post between the rails and two ratchet straps) then shoved the k in. I've done it from the top and the bottom. Bottom can be easier, with the k out, of course.
Not gonna lie. I'm disappointed it won't have that v8 muscle sound through the pipes but I am stoked to see this build done. May even change my mind and swap my Mercury Capri RS? You never know. 🤷🏻♂️
Weve got 2 other that make the beautiful noises that V8's grace us with ;) This will sound like half of that lol Im going to do my best to give it a nice sound and not sound like a fart can.
Thinking of doing this swap on an 88 Thunderbird turbo coupe. Where did you buy the engine?
OOOH Neat. That would be cool. I got lucky. A viewer that lived pretty close in Texas saw my project and sold it to me. But look at LKQ,www.lkqonline.com/
Hey I was just watching your preview video going through the 2.3 ecoboost engine and it seems you really know where each part are at .I have a 2016 2.3 ecoboost mustang and I was wondering if you can show me / tell me where is the CHTsensor is located at
Yessir I do. Looking at the motor, on the top, to the left of coil plug #2. Send me an email and I can send you a pic or diagram. Prisonplanet88@gmail.com
Hi do u have the motor part number. I got this from aje but they dont bolt up to the 2.3 ecoboost. AJE-80
Sweetj job, looks great! But no more flipflops, you need your toes☺👍👍
Lucky I wasnt barefoot! Been like that since I was a kid. I get it though
Project proposal sir. Ford Ecoboost 2.3 into a 16 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 DoubleCab?
I always install engine and tranny separate so nothing gets messed up..
Great to see aje makes motor mounts now. I have an 84 svo and a 2.3 ecoboost engine that I'm planning on dropping in. The motor mounts would have been a pain to make.
I agree, they worked out perfect, minus the steering rack issue, otherwise placement is really spot on.
Did you run over a duck at 6:46? Great video as always man!
Hahaha, sound like it! Thats a grunt though I swear. Appreciate the comment brother
Hey I’m doing the same build but in a SN95 and I didn’t see the rack and pinion problem coming either I was just about to drop it in until I seen this video have you found a fix yet for the power rack ??
AJE has a drop bracket they are making me. this drops its an inch and will move it outward. Offset bushing will help, but in mine it needed to be moved away from the K member 3/4" or so as well. AJE makes thats bracket for this unless you plan to run a manual rack.
@@HOUSEOFDULA I emailed them but haven’t got a response yet but I found 3/4 spacer for a mustang 2 rack and pinion from speedway motors that might work.
@@HOUSEOFDULA I got it to work!!! I got mustang II rack and pinion spacers from speedway motors but the only issue is you have to extend the steering shaft which should be pretty simple 🤞🏼the brake power booster is definitely hitting the intake I tried shaving it down but still hits it I think if I put a small dent in the power boost it will fit you could space the motor forward but I have the AJE k member brace so I don’t have anymore room to move it hope this helps and can’t wait to see the next video 🤙🏼
Is the brake power booster gonna fit??? Looks tight
Yeah...It doesnt fit lol Thinking that a standard booster will, from a GT.
They make an adapter for the t5 that moves the shifter back so it will fit In the factory location. If I can find a link for it I'll post it.
Yeah lemme know. Ive seem one but it actually moves it too far back
Its not letting me post the link. Look up mustang ii t5 shifter. It'll be the first link. Made by modern driveline
Great build, why not a V6 instead of the 2.3?
to keep te 4 banger and 2.3 roots, and the size....its tiny. The 3.5 is wide and tall with the twin turbos.
@@HOUSEOFDULA sounds good, and it should still move pretty good too
Watch out using those steel-toed flip flops!
42 years messing with cars most of them, maybe Im lucky? ;) usually, unless its cold Im barefoot.
You definitely need a load-leveler lol
yes I do. Man I figured I could work it out without it, but nope. The whole time was cursing that I didnt have one.
Would any of the v6 eco boost engines fit under the hood?
Its been done but completely different animal. They are large, and wide! because the turbos on the side. Its been done, but not as frequent due to all the work involved.
might be easier next time to install the engine on the k member and then lift the k member into the car
If I had a lift to get the car high enough, yes it would be.
UNO!!!
What do you plan to run for engine management and harness? We may be interested in working a deal with you.
Bill, for this setup because of all the security backed in a stock ECU and harness from a new mustang for sells a control pack. Its pricy, but comes with a an ECU built for non-emission engine swaps. Comes with literally everything to put an ecoBoost 2.3 in anything. ECU, fly by wire pedal, fuse box, etc...check out my unboxing the ford control pack M-6017-23T
@@HOUSEOFDULA My son and I make standalone swap harnesses for Ecoboost swaps. We are trying to break into the market. The Ford Controls pack is cool, just limits you to using the S550 stuff and a manual. I have 3 Ecoboost swaps currently going on, 2 65 Falcons (2.3/6R and 3.5/10R) and a Focus ZX3 (custom built 2.3 using 2.0 block and Focus RS head/turbo. Fun times, If you have any questions or want to try something other than the Control Pack, let us know. Stay safe, and have fun with the swap.
@@billholder9665 Hi how much are u selling your harness for?? Plus ill like to do this swap with an automatic
@@musclecargarage8882 What trans do you plan to run?
@@billholder9665 im not sure yet but its going to be a automatic one.
I call my 16 boostang boomba.
Offset rack bushings would fix that issue
I measured this., its close but not enough, needs to drop and also be pushed out.
Is there reason that you went t 5 versus t45 3650?
Nope, just because I had it lol and I know of its condition. So many trans choices. Id like a T56 in it, or new TKX. Hell, might even go auto deepending on how it drives when Im done.
@@HOUSEOFDULA damn, i have a spare one i never used and would have given it to you!
@@wastedwagesmercuryman6018 WHAAAT? lol Spare T5?
Why?
Using studs on the bell housing is not a smart idea if you ever have to pull the bell housing of in the car it ain’t gonna happen
No way around it with the Esslinger kit because of the heater hose location from block, you cant get the bell on...reason 102, why using a SBF trans behind a T5 with their kit is a bad idea! lol. But is what it is. no doubt pulling the motor will be headache but not that bad, at least the studs though have allen heads.
Tokyo drift
No…
First here! Nice job Dula!
FIRST!
Cool build!
But,
Sorry....
I just can't handle guys who do engine swaps in baggy shorts, flip flops and a backwards baseball cap.
